Decent chips , just always seems to be a lot of unhappy youngsters serving which I'm not sure is a good thing but you can see they try their best but could do with being a happier environment a lot of sad faces working there

Told there was no fish available as they were closing in 15 mins. I mean a fish shop with no fish? Made to feel it was my fault for turning up so late

Never open these days, always a note on the door as to the latest reason why they are closed. Usually something like “Closed due to school holidays” or “Closed due to Family commitments” No way to run a business

Used to be nice here now old soggy chips cold and warmed up cheese pie my family threw in bin, wouldn’t return

Enjoyed a couple of chippie teas from Charlies. Chicken breast also takes 5 mins to fry so not waiting too long

Ordered 2 portions on chips and gravy and 2 scallops. Most the chips were like half a small potato and obviously had not seen the fryer long enough because they were pale and still slightly raw inside served with thin tasteless gravy and one scallop had dried up potato encased in batter that was so hard I couldn’t get my teeth through it and the other one was okay but a bit dry and tasteless. Would expect more considering chippy tea is quite expensive these days

Welcoming takeaway chip shop. Quality food. Had a fish which was very nice. Plenty of meal deals. Nice staff. Very close to bus stops. Train station near to.

used to be my favourite chippy. not anymore! charlie sold it to someone else and now its crap. been on more than one occasion and each time I've been very disappointed. dont bother going if you like a good chippy, coz this definitely isnt it anymore. time to look somewhere else!!!

After leaving positive reviews when new management took over to help support their growth I wish I now didn’t.. it’s as though I am made to feel unwelcome every time I order.. even asking for salt and vinegar makes me feel like I’m being rude. No pleases no thank yous and the only time I got a smile was when I was leaving. Thanks but no thanks

Called in at opening time shambolic organisation obviously weren’t ready tasteless gravy like water,barely any curry on the chips and tight with the ketchup too not good maybe someone overslept 😉.

Ordered fish and chips by phone last night. Ready to collect in 10 minutes. Got them home and they were absolutely delicious. Great service, great food, great experience. Highly recommended 👍👍👍👍

Poor quality chips, smallest fish you could imagine. Gone down the plug hole sadly. Good luck to whoever buys Charlie's cos you'll have to put tons of effort to get this shop back on track,

We used to go to Charlie's Chips every week. The food was fresh, tasty and the portions were fantastic. Then it changed hands and everything started to go downhill. The staff who were great and knew our order without being told, all suddenly had gone. The fish, my goodness the fish, it went from being huge and yummy to being slightly bigger than a fish finger (but still at large size prices), the amount of batter used is shocking and it manages to have very little in the way of taste. The chips are a pale imitation of the delicious fingers of delight they used to be. It is now usual to get small bits of fried potato (not going to glorify these by calling them chips) as well as some chips. Again, the portions are smaller, the quality is much worse but the prices have never reduced! Shortly after the new owner took over he decided to have a makeover of the premises (aren't makeovers supposed to improve the premises?) Big mistake. It simply managed to make it look cheap and nasty. Top tip: it's the food your customers are interested in not your lighting. Honestly, if you hadn't been for some time you would have an awful shock. This brings me to the question I'm sure you are asking, namely, 'if it's THAT bad why did she go back? Simple, we had a friend that used to live near u a visiting. She couldn't believe it was as bad as everyone said it was and wanted to get some fish and chips for old times sake. Anyway, off we went, in the shop (no, she didn't like the "improvements" ) bought some fish and chips, she was amazed and hated them. Then we went and bought a pizza. But that is a bother post entirely.

Absolutely rubbish. I went with my husband despite seeing reviews that it had gone downhill. I carefully checked trip advisor and the Facebook page to make sure it would be open, however when we got there two young staff members refused entry saying they were trialing an early close (despite everything online and on the actual shop front stating a 7.30pm closing time). It takes 2 seconds to post an update on Facebook and they hadn't even been bothered to do this. I saw two other families get turned away in the couple of minutes it took for us to decide where else to go. Don't bother going. They clearly don't want the business.

Charlie's Chippy ha existido durante años, es un negocio familiar, pero incluso a medida que el personal o los propietarios lo cambian, todavía sirve buena comida. It's a shame to say it as i always liked Charlie's chippy but I agree with the previous review the large fish is no bigger than a goldfish. What makes it worse is they charge £1.65 more for it than a smaller one but the fish they served me could only be described as a small. That was two weeks ago and I had been too lazy to write a review but I went in today for chips as I'm a forgiving person and decided to give them another go. I had twelve minutes to my bus and decided for one portion of chips with two people in the line it would be fine. I was served for the chips straight away and paid but then after nearly another ten minutes other orders had been taken and my chips were nowhere to be seen and no-one was nearby for me to ask for my money back so i had to leave chipless and £1.80 down. I want to point out I am not bitter as i love the taste of their food but I won't be returning and all I would ask is they use my £1.80 towards buying a large fish from spmehwere (maybe Kongs) and serve it to a customer who asks for a big fish then at least one person won't be disappointed.

Este es el peor pollo del que he tenido bacalao. Mi esposa no vio la basura dentro de la caja hasta que llegó a casa. Ciertamente no parecía ni sabía a bacalao. Hazte un favor y compra en otro lugar. Las personas que valoran este chippy altamente deben ser parientes o aún sufrir una conmoción por el tamaño del pez.

Charlie's was recommended to us. So after a 25 mile journey we decided to give it a try. We arrived at 715pm (they close at 730) Too be told they had no fish, chips and no steak puddings. Will not be visiting again.

Lamentablemente, acabo de hacer mi última visita. . .Pedí unas papas pequeñas y un pescado mediano (el tamaño más grande que hacen) como comida para llevar. Llegué a casa y me sorprendió la pequeña porción de pescado, que era sabrosa pero, literalmente, solo unos pequeños bocados. . . Las patatas fritas estaban un poco empapadas / promedio. Nunca he visto nada igual (en todo el país). Qué timo para 5. 20. Nunca más. . .

Antes me gusta este lugar. Preferiría esperar más y pagar más y usar el otro en el futuro. La última vez, mis guisantes fueron duros, pero pensé que tendría otra oportunidad. Caminé por la puerta y casi caí sobre el cubo del bateador que estaba justo en el medio del piso en la zona de espera del cliente por alguna razón. Se desarrolló un poco de cola ya que había guisantes y salsa listos para entrar en las cubas; en lugar de eso, se vertieron una jarra de plástico de la nevera y se calentaron en el microondas. ¿Qué? ! Lleno de personal joven que es agradable pero no tiene habilidades de servicio al cliente. Dicho esto, preferiría que me sirvieran antes que a la mujer ruda que cocina el pescado. Todo el lugar parece que necesita una limpieza profunda. No volveremos

I have been vaguely conscious of sharp practice on my last two visits there. The girl who served me tried to palm off a dark brown, long sausage shaped fish (which I was unable to identify) as cod.

When the previous owner had this chippy,it was wonderful. Now,it's all measured out trays and it just puts me off. Sorry,I changed chippy after many years.

Just started work in the area and heard good things from my colleagues also noticed the queues inside the shop when passing and took this as a good sign.

Used to be the best in Urmston, no scrap that, best in the north west. Not anymore. The chips were bloody awful.

Went in for chips. They were terrible, small and greasy. Portion size small and they use too much packaging. There has been a lot of staff changes, the old guard have moved on which is a shame and I think is reflecting in the produce.

I sent my two eldest children their to buy the family some food, they spent just over £12.00 on what we wanted and the food was was disgracefull. The chips where burnt almost black and i asked for a ull fish and i am hearing the man snapped the fish in half and gave it to them. The food was baisically left over's me and the family will never be eating there again as they do not no how to cook and they can not be trusted surving children because they think they can rip them of!!! NEVER AGAIN

Charlie's Chippy was the best by far. A while back the usual staff left and has been replaced by this lot. They are slow, inefficient and very rude. The portion sizes have deteriorated. Due to the excellent previous experience I have had of this place, I have given them time, but I will not use this establishment again.

Starting on a positive note, I previously wrote a review that the chips had become poor at this place, but over recent weeks they seem to have got back to the good and tasty standards they once were.

Went into the Fish & Chip Shop one evening recently. It was not busy but service was extremely slow. A customer ordered 16 Chicken Nuggets and was told it would be 5 minutes. The lad who was serving didn't use his initiative and serve another customer whilst the chicken nuggets were being fried. He just stood around waiting!!! After a few minutes one of the other staff asked him what he was doing and he said "waiting for chicken nuggets". The other staff member said "well serve someone else while you are waiting!!!!" This young lad said, "oh okay". He was totally clueless.

up until a few months ago, Charlie Chips were the best. I'm not sure if they have changed oils, or the fact they now buy-in pre-cut chips, but they have lost their colours, crispiness and are soaked in oil. Hopefully they will change back.

Have been there a few times for a takeaway. I don't have a big appetite so am pleased that they do small portions for a reasonable price. The quality is excellent and the chips are mostly on the thick side so full of taste unlikely the crisps-like sticks you end up with some other places.

I was in Urmston this afternoon and fancied a chippie late lunch, so called into Charlie’s. I definitely wasn’t disappointed and will be coming back again. Lovely.

Simplemente tienes que llamar a Charlie's si su jamás en Urmston. El personal es muy amable y la comida siempre es muy bueno y agradable y muy caliente. Siempre hay un lote de patatas frescas saliendo tan agradable y fresco. El pescado es muy agradable. Me encanta este pequeño "fish and chips"

Used to get regular teas from here but last few times it was awful....why oh why do the staff put fish and chips together then wrap them so tight it all sticks together...chips just taste of fat and repeat on you constantly

Habiendo trabajado allí muchas lunas hace un lugar suave para Charlies "fish and chips". Durante el año pasado he visitado varias veces y en cada ocasión la comida ha sido genial, pero el personal es grosero. Se destacan por tener conversaciones con los demás, hablando con la gente fuera de la ventana y a otras personas en la cola. Personal tenemos que recordar la importancia de foco en el cliente, en lugar de tener un buen gossip!

Me encanta este "fish and chips" que hacen diferentes tipos de curry, ambos están muy bien, las porciones son de muy buen tamaño, el personal es agradable, qué más puedes pedir visitante frecuente, buena relación calidad-precio

We decided to have a 'chippy tea' on Tuesday for a treat. We picked Charlies because we had always had good reports from friends and family. My husband went to collect the order. What an appalling visit it was. The counter where the meals are wrapped was covered in fat and there was a pice of dirty kitchen role with chips on as if it had been picked up from the floor. He ordered fish and chips and sausage and chips. The chips being served looked burnt and refried. My husband commented on this and the lady serving him said they were always busy on a Tuesday so there was nothing she could do. He was not very happy and told her so, On reflection he wishes he had walked out at this point but he carried on and brought the order home. The chips were horrible, some were burnt and the others were soggy and full of fat. The fish was chewy and only about 3 or 4mm thick, The batter was difficult to describe, dark brown and crispy. The sausage was undercooked and greasy. Not a good experience. Almost all of it went in the bin. What a shame after more than 25 years of having an excellent reputation,obviously gained by great food and customer service, to be let down by what is happening in the establishment at the moment.

I've been going to Charlie's since I was a young lad and it has always been top quality. It's what I usually go and eat if I've had a particularly rough week!

Quite often i get my Friday Fish from the supermarket, however last Friday we did not visit my local supermarket to get my fresh Fish, however i made the decision to visit Charlies Chippy to get our Friday Tea and it was the right decision. The staff were very efficient and courteous and the food was very good and i will visit again. Keep up the good work and the next time you visit Charlies Chippy tell them that Gerry sent you! It will not get you a discount though!

You can expect lovely food lots of choice always tastes really fresh and big portions, takeaway service only.

Food quality is average. Staff unhelpful. I had a simple request and was told by the manager he was too busy to help me. I won't be going back.

The fish was barely warm, over cooked, thin and chewy. The batter was soggy and chewy too. I can only think it had been sitting in the warmer for ages. This isn't the only time the fish has been appalling, I've had similar in the past. I've learned my lesson at last and won't be returning.

Great fish supper here...cooked to order but worth the wee wait. Now open on a Sunday which is a huge plus. Grab some chips n pop down to Sale waterpark to eat them, perfect.

Very busy fish and chips shop, so all the food is freshly done. Some difficulty in parking, have to go to the main car park near Sainsburys.

Usually a queue but for a reason, excellent quality at a reasonable price. Small but conveniently located near sainsburys of eden square Urmston. Good deal on smaller fish and chips which was fresh tasting.

Pretty awful too be honest, cardboard boxes make the chips taste horrible and they absorb all the vinegar so you can't actually taste it. Gone really down hill recently, new owners are not the best. Used to be great a few years ago.

There is nowhere better to purchase a deep fried, artery-threatening tea than Charlie's Chippy.The chips are deep fried to perfection and the fish arrives battered (and dead).The only thing that bothers me is the choice of three different curry sauces. What if I pick the wrong one? What's the difference? Why are there three? What's going on?I have had sleepless nights over the curry and most of the time panic and change it to gravy (although I really really want chip shop curry).I would give 5 stars but the curry situation really bothers me.

This is best chippy around! It really is the best, food is great & reasonably priced if anything cheaper than it should be!

No cafe, no coffees, no fine dining. This is just a chippy, but is consistently very good- one of the best chippys for miles.They have only one serious competition in the area (yes I AM a chippy officianado) but I would be doing Carlies a dis-servive in mentioning another here.When shopping in Urmston, look them up, you will not be disappointed.

When ever we visit our friends in Urmston, we always have a chippy tea and it's always from Charlies.The food is always freshly cooked and really tasty. Considering how good it is, and how big the portions are, the price is excellent too.An indication of how good it is, is that the queue is ALWAYS out the door!!!The choices available are great. How many different curry sauces can one place offer? Strongly recommended...........

Always go here for our bi-weekly "treat" great sizes portions always spot on . Never had a bad expierence, hence the repeat visit. All good value.The question are getting longer however, that can only be down to the quality.Extra staff have been taken on to resolve.

Can't fault it , I've been to a few chippys in my time , and Charley's is the standard bearer what I compare other chippys with . It has got to be one of the best in the whole country , not just Manchester , proper chips for sure

Often have a chippy here once a week , don't look the best but the food always tasty and the curry sauce the spicy one is delicious.

small premesis so sometimes get stuck in a queue but better to be in a queue here to get nice chips than get seved the yukky bland tasting chips at whittakers charlies is the best chippy in urmston

It's the best chip shop in urmston. Although whittakers was voted the best and we have our nemo s there every week charlie still makes the best chips. Just a pity they don't have a sit in area.

Just got back andeaten fish and chips , the batter was rock hard, really tough you couldn't hardly cut through it , like my daighter said it was like it was refried and the fish inside wasn't too good either and the chips were really greasy, been a couple of times recently and have been disappointed but do keep returning as it has been so nice for so many years but I am now having second thoughts about this, this was supposed to be a real treat as we don't eat fish and chips that often do go into Charlie's because of the convenient location but not again :(

Chips are delicious without that old oil taste. Good portion size, wrapped well. Well salted, could have done with a bit more vinegar

Great food and reasonably priced. The quality us consistent and it is always busy, the whole year round... the only downside being their early evening closing time.

If you want chips this is the place to go. Yes there's sometimes a queue but it's soon dealt with. I like the choice of the curries fruity one is my preference! Not terribly expensive given it is a take away chippy of course.

The queues were too long and they couldn't cater to what all my family needed. They charged me too much and when i told them they did not believe me, i decided to be the better person and just leave them to it. The little chips we had were okay though. Would not recommend or go back.

Somehow, Charlie's Chippy survived the total rebuild of Urmston Precinct which was a bombsite for years..Today, Urmston town centre is once again flourishing and thank goodness, the fish and chips at Charlie's Chippy remain the same...Lovely battered large fish, generous portions of deliciously cooked chips, and a choice of three different curry sauces...Have a portion of fish and chips with a can of the Manchester-brewed soft drink, Vimto..wow, what a combination!Best chippy for miles around, they have been there for at least 25 years and I am sure will be around for at least another 25..Great staff too, the guy who does the frying has been there for 26 years, not sure if he is Charlie though...

I don't eat fish and chips on a very regular basis, but - when we do, this is the only place to go.. It's been there for years, used to go lots as a teenager - I am now in my forties and still this is a corner of Urmston that I hope will never change! Oh and my children go there now!

Nothing bad to say about Charlie's chippy, what you expect from a chip shop - great chips, pies etc always clean and staff always friendly - although I do wonder when he's going to stop employing just the 'pretty' girls...dont think I've ever seen an ugly girl in there!!

Dry crisp batter, good quality fish, well cooked chips, some items cooked to order. A delight. Friendly staff and quick service.

Chippy excellent food - choice of 3 curry sauces. Always well staffed and busy. Fresh fish - cooked to order - lightly battered fish is an alternative, just ask.
