Charlie's Bistro in Derbyshire Dales

What a wonderful place!!! Met with friends for a late lunch yesterday and had a wonderful meal. The food was fantastic, I had the “Fish of the day” which was stunning. Vegetables were so fresh and tasty. The Sunday roast looked well cooked, tasty and good portion sizes. Puddings were excellent and the service and friendly atmosphere made it a really lovely experience. A true “gem” and somewhere that we will certainly come back to. Thank you to everyone there, we had a lovely afternoon!!

Following my sister’s recommendation, a friend and I met here for a pre-Christmas lunch and we couldn’t fault our visit. We were greeted warmly, served promptly and generally looked after very well. I had cod rarebit salad, which was lovely and light for lunchtime but utterly delicious and filling at the same time. My friend opted for a honey roast ham sandwich on ciabatta which he enjoyed. We had a midday reservation and, although the restaurant was fairly quiet when we arrived, it quickly filled up and was heaving by the time we left. There was a lovely ambience and the log burner, which was directly at the side of our table, provided plenty of heat on a cold Saturday in December. Perfect! There’s only one toilet, which is unisex, but it was clean and well stocked with toilet paper and hand wash so no complaints there! This is a lovely little bistro serving high quality food at a reasonable price. Including several coffees and cold drinks, our meal came to £38.40 which, for super food and excellent service, is great value. I’ll definitely return at some point.

Very friendly staff and interested menu. Food is nicely presented & very tasty. The room itself lacks a bit of atmosphere & is a bit bare but this wouldn’t stop me returning as the food/service is so good.

It's a 2hr round trip for us to dine at Charlies, but there is a reason we don't mind. The food is always first class, as is the service. There's a decent 'standard' menu with plenty of choice, and always plenty of 'specials' options. For the first time today I had the steak and ale pie for my main course, and it was the best I have ever had, the meat was gorgeous.

This was my second visit whilst staying locally. Our first visit had the best steak sandwich ever. As a result we went for lunch; the weather was beautiful and we sat outside with a view of the church. The restaurant which is dog friendly was full inside and had a great atmosphere The menu is varied with options for all dietary requirements We shared a starter of prawn and salmon salad; which was fortunate as it was huge I had salmon and haddock fish cakes with a beautiful light lemon and white wine sauce served with perfectly cooked vegetables My husband had a cod rarebit salad which he devoured The wine list is good and not overpriced A beautiful lunch great service and worth the second visit

Absolutely fantastic, had the Cod Welsh rarebit. What a meal !!! Eat out fairly regularly and now and again we go high end. You can’t beat this.

The Goats Cheese Tart starter and Rack of Lamb main were both very good. The chips part of the Cod and Chips was good but the Cod certainly wasn’t. The batter was thin and soggy and the fish itself was wet and lacked flavour. The solitary waitress coped brilliantly but was very busy so it was not easy to attract her attention to complain. Had I done so I would presumably have been offered a replacement fish which would no doubt have been the same, or perhaps a different meal which would have meant a long wait judging by how long we had waited for our initial order and me eating on my own while my partner would have had to sit watching me, having long finished her meal. I therefore lumped my way through it, I was hungry after all, that's why we where there. When the waitress came to clear the plates I told her of my dissatisfaction with the fish and drew her attention to the pile of soggy batter and fish I had left on the plate. She said she would inform the chef. She brought the bill without comment so I asked her whether she had informed the Chef and asked what his response had been. She said he had said sorry. I said that if he was sorry why was there no adjustment to the bill? She said she would go back and ask him. She returned to inform me that he said that as I had eaten it I had to pay for it. What an attitude, what poor PR. Our first and last visit to Charlies. Note. I couldn't bring myself to tip the waitress under the circumstances which was unfortunate because she was working very hard and unsupported and it wasn't her fault. Perhaps Chef, or Charlie, you would have the decency to dip into your own pocket and give her the £7 she didn't get from me thanks to your poor attitude.

Have to say we were very disappointed. Booked in advance, the restaurant was full all but one table at 7.30pm. Limited menu but already sold out of one of the main courses. We ordered starters, which were good and generously portioned, served hot. Our mains were both very average, fish and chips if my husband says it was ok, it wasn’t great and I ordered fillet of beef, med but it was over cooked and dry. We weren’t asked if everything was ok and the single waitresss was very busy but we did comment as she removed our plates, she said she would inform the chef. That was the last we heard. We paid and left. We are fairly local, ( live in Castleton) but would not recommend or rush back. Bit sad as we do like to support local independent businesses.

The food is sensational. My friend Anna treated me. What a lovely restaurant. I can't wait to go back to visit.

Not being familiar with Baslow, I booked after reading the good reviews on Tripadvisor. We weren't disappointed. Firstly, while not being the most expensive place I have eaten, it certainly wasn't the cheapest either and so it was important that I felt like we'd had an evening out. Thankfully, and probably due to the food being freshly prepared, the speed of service was spot on, allowing us to drink, chat and digest between courses. Service was impressive, given there was only one lady covering all front of house duties. She greeted everyone cheerily, was very organised in her management of both indoor and outdoor tables and was attentive but not intrusive. The food was lovely and we believed the quality represented good value. We had the beef fillet and rack of lamb (that were accompanied by plentiful vegetables) both of which were cooked perfectly. Our starters and desserts were delicious too. Overall, we had a wonderful evening and will definitely visit again when we're in the area.

Went to Charlies Bistro in Baslow as an early Fathers day treat last night. I chose it as we hadn't been there for over 10 years and it used to be excellent...but will be more than ten before I go back! On entering a totally disinterested and unfriendly young waitress pointed to our table rather than showed us to it. We then had a long wait for drinks and menus. When the wine arrived it was just plonked on table, no word, tasting or pouring on offer here. Starters were ok, but when the fillet steak I had ordered medium rare turned up. It was the size of a golf ball and totally over cooked. I very, rarely complain but there was no way you can justify £25 for what was essentially poor quality, badly cooked scrag end! I The chips and vegetables on the other hand were nice. Another positive was that they did knock my main off the bill, which as I couldn't eat it wasn't unreasonable. I don't know if the chef was too busy as 2 large parties had turned up or was having an off night, but the poor service and poor quality steak meant that we left the bistro really disappointed!

Not sure what to expect, but pleasantly surprised. Wonderful little restaurant. Good food. Good wine. Great service. Thoroughly recommended.

We booked a table at this restaurant for New Year and I can’t praise them enough. To begin with they never asked for a deposit (for such an important night too), the service was spot on, the food was all of good quality and cooked well, and we never felt under pressure to leave. The chef even came out of the kitchen and was happy to chat. Was this the cheapest restaurant I’ve been to? No. However it did, in my opinion, value for money. The litmus test is would we go again? Yes, yes, yes and we’ve already been recommending this restaurant to more of our friends. Need to know; 1. There is parking across the road near the church (free) 2. Access is really easy (1 step up from the pavement)

Went for lunch today, and the fact that the place didn't have an empty table after we arrived, said a lot. The food was excellent, as was the service. Decent sized portions as well, no space for dessert. We will be back again.

Had a lovely meal at Charlie's last weekend for our Christmas doo.. Food delicious but.. . I have a but! I asked for a white wine, offered verbally a selection, I chose The sauvignon blanc.. Nice but not £10..odd a glass!! I should have asked the price but I think when it gets over £6 the waiting on staff should say that is £10.didnt find this out until the bill came I had 2 glasses so unknowing to me my 2 drinks cost me nearly as much as my meal.. Shocked to say the least. The food was delicious.. And the place is lovely, just watch the drinks!! 😳

We visited as a group of 9, Sammy looked after us really well. Food was excellent piping hot, freshly cooked and tasty. The steak pie was amazing the beef melted in your mouth. A lovely relaxed place, will visit again.

I have been lucky enough to enjoy Charlie's food on many occassion. Whether that be lunch with the girls, more intimate supper dates or most memorably, my daughter's wedding reception. Humble settings, but never disappoints - no tricks, no fanfare; no need - the food...

Great food reasonably priced. Good service in a nice relaxed atmosphere. The a la crate menu offered a good choice of starters, main courses & desserts. Visited Charlie’s whilst staying locally. Booked on-line, not disappointed. Would definitely recommend if you are in the area.

As a regular visitor to the area and with friends living nearby I try to get to Chariies at least 3-4 times a year. The food is always excellent, there is a decent selection of wines and the staff are always friendly and polite.

Met my brother and his wife here for lunch on a recent trip to the area. Not seen them for a while, COVID restrictions etc, so lovely to get together for lunch. Nice setting and welcoming staff. I had carrot and coriander soup which was very tasty and the pie and chips, which was again very tasty. Couldn’t eat it all though as the portions were large. Quite busy for a mid week lunch time but still remained quite quiet, noise wise, so we were able to chat. Lovely lunchtime experience

What a beautiful little place! I’ve driven past Charlie’s so many times but never had the opportunity to eat there before. My husband & I nipped in for lunch and we were not disappointed. Varied menu with great choice of dishes. Everything was full of flavour, some really unusual salads that were exceptional. I had the Greek salad with Piri piri chicken and mint mayonnaise. Friendly efficient service, although it was a busy night they took the time to check regularly. Well worth a visit

Only three other tables were being served, but our waiter brought my partner the wrong meal and took it back. I was then served roast beef, which I ordered to be well done - no pink at all. It arrived raw. It too, was taken back and I waited; my partner started his meal. My meal came back and I soon realised the gravy was missing and went to the counter. By the time I restarted my meal only the gravy was hot. There was no apology given only an excuse that the chef did not read the order. My partner reported that they had run out of toilet roll! From past reviews, he expected fresh chips not the frozen variety, and our first meal out together for over a year was spoilt by bad service. Staff training is needed.

Went expecting something mediocre, was VERY pleasantly surprised. Excellent food, really efficient and friendly staff, and very good value. Considering we were still eating 'outside', the atmosphere was good. Wouldn't hesitate to go back - thoroughly recommended.

I would of given a 5 if it was warmer. Unfortunately that was beyond the restaurant control as we still have to sit outside. The pop up outdoor area was welcoming & pleasant. Although just 1 lady server she did an excellent job of looking after everyone. No waiting efficant & friendly service.The menu was good also for lunch, we both had fish rarebit salad & it was lovely. I had a side order of hot tasty chips.Glass of very decent wine & a coffee.Price reflected the quality of food. We did not feel it was expensive but correct for what we had. We will eat there again 100%

Just top notch home gastro pub cooking in a lovely environment. Reasonable prices, charming host - wonderful. We’re here for a week and have booked in again! Wife has pan fried smoked haddock starter as a main with a side salad and I had the home made steak and ale pie with a gravy pot, perfectly cooked mixed veg and very awesome triple fried chips. Highly recommended. Really exception.

Amazing little spot! Perfect outdoor seating which is well covered. The pancakes are the best I have ever tasted!!! Dog friendly too which is always a bonus. Charlie is a very friendly host who makes you feel welcome as soon as you sit down.

We have been going to Chatsworth for quite a few years and never tried Charlies before. So we tried it last year and found a little gem. It’s very near the M/Home campsite, in fact we cycle there every time we go. The Steak pie homemade of course is divine and superb well cooked chips.Can’t wait to back. Excellent food with excellent service.

Visited Charlie's today after a long 6 months of COVID-19 lockdown. We are so happy this bistro has reopened, it is the best place to eat not only in Baslow but of anywhere we have visited. Never a bed meal, food excellent and value for money. Can't wait to visit again.The Harrisons

We visited twice during our week's holiday in the Peak District. On both occasions the food was excellent, the service was friendly and helpful and we had a lovely table outside in the sunshine, with our 7 month old black Labrador. Ingredients were fresh and tasty and the food arrived piping hot.We ate there on the Friday we arrived and decided we had to come back, which we did on Tuesday, only to discover they are closed on Monday and Tuesday.We managed to get back on Thursday before we left, and it was every bit as good as our previous visit.

Second time we've had the pies and they're fantastic. I had steak & ale pie with mash, veg and gravy. Great portions and extremely tasty. My wife had the fish pie - for the second time - with chips and veg and didn't want it to end. Last time I had the vegetable wellington with chips and mushy peas, again excellent. Looking forward to next Thursday. Well done Charlie & Becky.

Four of us decided to try the Thursday pie night takeaway. We all tried something different Beef Wellington, Steak and Ale, Fish and Spicy Vegetable pie. All were absolutely delicious. All came piping hot with plenty of vegetables and gravy. Highly recommended and we cannot wait to try a different pie next Thursday night.

Always met with a warm smile and buzzing atmosphere. The menu changes regularly and has never disappointed us. I am just really sad that I have left til now to leave a review. Charlie, please open again soon!

We walked in on a Sunday and was met by a young girl who was so unfriendly towards us and telling us where to sit, even though the place was deserted, in a very discourteous tone. We immediately left and went to the Prince of Wales which was excellent. So in a way she did us a favour. I don’t leave many negative reviews but I certainly won’t be back.

Booked a table for Saturday afternoon, arrived early for our reservation. Was sat down at our table with our 8 week old baby and the pushchair, another family arrived so was asked to move to a much smaller table which was blocking the way to the toilets. We couldn’t put our baby in the pushchair as there was no where to put it that was near to us. They ended up moving us all and the table plus the chairs and the pushchair, this was all going on in front of a very full restaurant. This was quite embarrassing for us but we got seated with the pushchair at the side of us.The food was excellent and service was good, my only criticism was that they never offered any free drinks or any money off our food for the inconvenience, or really apologised for the mix up.

We rang Charlies on the off chance and were lucky they had just had a cancellation. What good fortune! From the moment we stepped in we felt welcomed and this continued through the evening. We enjoyed the warm and cosy atmosphere and the food - the food was to die for! It's many years since I tasted such good restaurant food. And the wine wasn't bad either. It was a valentines night to remember. Amazing!

Visited for Breakfast a few times now, I find it as great options and very well cooked and provides great options for all dietary preferences. The Poached eggs today were excellent

Regularly visit this place with wife and / or family for breakfast or brunch. Very popular with all the family. Kids love the pancakes and I love the healthy English breakfast. Very good service

What a lovely place with lots of character and delicious food. I found this via a search for places to eat during a visit to the area for Chatsworth Christmas. The parking was very tight however the food was very tasty and service good. A menu that I could have eaten just about everything so tempting. I settled on the scallops which were served beautifully cooked. Strongly recommended.

Everything was perfect, nothing too much trouble and the food was just outstanding. The menu is very varied to say that the quality is that high- super place you deserve your ongoing success. We booked the restaurant on a recent visit to see the Christmas markets at Chatsworth. We arrived shortly before 7.30pm and were immediately seated. The restaurant is a small intimate bistro with about 30ish covers. Our greeting was very good and we even had the chef come out and say hello. The menu covered a number of different types of food whilst not being massive. We plumped for scallops, breaded goats cheese as starters and lamb and chicken for mains. Complimentary bread and olives arrived promptly and our drinks order was taken. By this time the place was quite busy and we were prepared for a wait, however our starters arrived quickly and were lovely, breaded goats cheese with beetroot and pesto and scallops with risotto. The portions were generous. We finished starters and after a very reasonable space of time the mains arrived both which again were delicious along with a generous serving of potatoes and a mixture of veg that included a really nice spiced red cabbage. My wife washed it down with a nice Sauvignon blanc and I, unfortunately had the sparkling water as the designated driver. Too full for desserts, I had coffee. The whole meal was under £90 and was worth every penny. One thing that does need to be mentioned is the service. The young lady who served us was attentive and pleasant and made the evening a pleasure. Thank to all at Charlies.

A nice little restaurant with a good atmosphere. Service was excellent - very friendly and efficient. All three of us had excellent meals - all three courses were tasty and well cooked. Price was very reasonable for the quality of food. Would definitely recommend.

Never heard of this place before and I live locally. Partner took me with some friends after the Chatsworth show yesterday. What a surprise, a real hidden gem ! Very small but fantastic food...limited menu but I like that as makes choices a lot easier. Started with scallops and had beef Wellington for mains. Great value when you compare quality of food against what you get elsewhere. Certainly be back again.

Fabulous breakfasts with goose eggs, flexible service and very personable. Thoroughly recommend. Satisfied two very hungry teenagers but also pleased two very tired adults! The Buck’s Fizz helped

We visited as a family with young children for a spot of lunch before visiting Chatsworth having driven past so many times & adding it to our list of places to visit. So glad we came. I took the five choices from the breakfast list, my wife had smoked salmon and scrambled egg. Undoubtedly the best breakfast we’ve had for some time. We will definitely go back and it’s also ok to take dogs inside or outside

4 of us out for a cycle, looking for a bit of lunch and came across Charlie's, opposite the church. Fantastic sandwiches- more of a meal. Great friendly service. Sat outside in the sunshine watching the world go by. Definitely would cone back if around the area again.

Booked a table for 6 of us on a Saturday night and was really impressed by the quality of food and service. Lovely little place which was clearly popular and I could see why; lovely depth of flavours, range of locally sourced ingredients, generous portions, good quantity of vegetables served alongside main course, hot food on hot plates, attentive service throughout the night, lovely wine and coffee and not over priced at all. Smiley and helpful staff who put up with a noisy group like ourselves. Looking forward to going again!

We were out and about with friends and just popped in for coffee and cake. Lovely welcome and lovely atmosphere for a Saturday morning. Coffee was excellent and the Bakewell and flapjack were delicious. Would love to go back to sample the food soon

We called in on the off chance of a spare table & were pleasantly greeted and seated in the window. The restaurant was busy but the staff were courteous & prompt. We ordered starters of soup of the day & pate which were delightfully presented and tasty.

Called in here after a longish walk in need of refreshment. Had a toasted teacake and a latte. Both excellent. Staff very pleasant and efficient. Sat outside as had the dog and it was nice and quiet overlooking the church opposite. Can recommend.

Been here several times. It’s always been a good experience with the exception of the awful, intrusive music. I often find that when music is at a level that overrides your own conversation, it is because the staff like it rather than the customers. I really wish they wouldn’t impose it on us.

We had brunch at Charlie's Bistro on 6th April on our way to an appointment in Chesterfield. We chose the venue based on the positive comments and these were very much aligned with our experience. The food was freshly cooked, well-presented and delicious. We will definitely return and would highly recommend.

This is the second visit to the restaurant and both have been excellent experiences. The service, food and wine were all very good. There were five of us and we had various items on the menu.

Four of us enjoyed a wonderful meal , the staff & attention to detail were faultless. Only criticism is they have only got plain gin in stock. Hopefully this will change when they reopen in Feb Looking forward to our next meal

Lovely, cosy little eatery in the heart of Baslow. Good service and food selection. I’d come back, but with a smaller group as bistro is quite small.

Just called on chance this morning to discover a very comprehensive breakfast menu.

Not that impressed. Very slow service. Poor menu choice- very little for children and had even run out of tuna for a sandwich. Chips looked too thick and not crispy. Limoncello trifle disappointingly sweet. Children enjoyed brownie and ice cream. Sunday lunch and not a yorkshire pudding in sight. A massive bill for two adults and three children. Only two courses each and a fruit drink for four and a medium wine for one. Came to over a hundred pound. Must be because it’s Baslow? Don’t think children got any reductions but I was informed they got half portions when I booked which presumably should have been cheaper. Would not go back.

Lovely little restaurant. Wonderful food, excellent service but not cheap! Pleasant ambience and a good mix of traditional and innovative dishes.

I came here for my 21st birthday meal and it was one of the most delicious meals i have ever had. I had scallops with pea and Panchetta risotto to start and the beef wellington for main, the scallops were perfectly cooked and the wellington was as well. Both full of flavour and seasoned to perfection. The service was fantastic as well and the wine was one of the best i have ever tasted, unfortunately I cannot find it for sale anywhere! Would 100% recommend this place, well worth the money!

I actually booked at this restaurant by accident due to a misunderstanding but am so glad I did. Had a great evening meal with old friends. We all enjoyed it enormously. A friendly atmosphere, not too big, attentive waiters and meals cooked to order. Definitely a place to return to.

This is one of my favourite restaurants and yet another great meal. I had the beef burger with homemade chips which was gorgeous and my husband, the roast beef sandwich which just melted in your mouth. All products are locally sourced. We will be back soon

Drawback for me was not much choice in the way of gluten free options. Nice food though, and delicious lemon posset.

Only open Friday and Saturday night in winter. Reservation essential. Small family run establishment. Excellent food and service,..recommended

We visited on Saturday Evening for my Mums Birthday, our first evening visit but most certainly not the last. The food and the service was absolutely outstanding, each mouthful was delicious! I had the scallops and risotto to start followed by beef Wellington, others had the duck salad and lamb which were equally delicious. I didn't have a pudding myself but my Mum and brother enjoyed the rhubarb and shortbread and also the Bakewell pudding. Best meal we have had out in long time, can't wait to come back!

Booking required for dinner. Beautifully cooked and locally sourced food, we have always enjoyed a good ‘dinner’. My favourite starter is the Monkfish in Batter or the Lobster Ravioli, and the crumble dessert is the best crumble I have ever tasted.

One of the best little places we have been to. Staff friendly and attentive, and the food is wonderful. I had the special of Cod topped with rarebit and a poached egg, delicious. Will defiantly be back.

My husband and I have just enjoyed the most brilliant food at this super little venue. Fillet steak and turbot. Both beautifully cooked, generous servings and charming service. I wish we were staying in the area longer so we could go again. Highly recommended

We had Sunday lunch at this restaurant to meet some friends.

Small restaurant with great fresh food! Ordered drinks, arrived immediately! Dinner order placed and delicious piping hot food arrived just at the right time between courses! Had to share a pud, but so glad we had one! Immediately booked for Sunday lunch! Highly recommend staff and amazing food- we are very critical foodies, so this is up there for us!

We went as a family for breakfast, lovely food and good service. Only problem we arrived before the fish order for the day was delivered, so no smoked haddock. No problems lots of other lovely food to choose from.
