Been coming here 20+ years with my dad and we have never had a bad meal yet. It's our favourite place to have a catch up. The owner John is lovely and always has time to chat, you can tell he puts his heart and soul into the business and he is a credit to the cafe. Fisherman/greek salads were fab as were the iconic Bakewell puddings with ice cream. Will always choose here over anywhere else in Bakewell.

Been here previously for coffee but we had a light lunch on this occasion as our preferred venue for that day was full. It turned out to be a good choice as the service is pretty quick and wait time for food isn’t long at all. I enjoyed a goats cheese and caramelised onion ciabatta with a salad and it was really very tasty. Love the coleslaw. Both other diners really enjoyed their selections of roast beef and Stilton ciabatta and a homity pie and it seems this was one of the best homity pies had in a cafe. Good hot cup of tea and a nice coffee. A bit out of the way tucked above the ice cream shop but it’s worth looking out for as they offer a comprehensive menu with lots of hot and cold options at reasonable prices.

The cafe was almost empty when we visited with only one other table occupied but in fairness it was late-ish on in the day. We were warmly welcomed by the proprietor and were served promptly and efficiently by friendly staff. I was only in the mood for a coffee but the soup (tomato and red pepper) and a scone were also ordered. The soup in particular was delicious by all accounts! A very comprehensive menu to choose from and perhaps somewhere to return to a bit earlier in the day to try some of the lunchtime offerings. The owner was extremely pleasant and enthusiastic and full of chat and banter which added to the experience. Reasonable value for money too. Overall a good choice for a light lunch / coffee in Bakewell.

Visited Bakewell on a rather wet Wednesday morning. Having had a wonder round the town found some cafes closed but came across the Upstairs Cafe, what a find. It was lovely, quiet, cosy and comfortable with wonderful friendly staff. I had a latte and hubby had one of their real chocolate hot chocolates and we shared a large slice of millionaires shortbread. My husband could not stop raving about his dark hot chocolate, coffee and cake were also delicious. It is obviously popular, it was getting very busy just before we left. Very good value for money.

Discovered this little gem earlier this year and have now visited quite a few times - it's my regular stop after a Peak District walk. Plenty of choice on the menu (from snacks to full meals), the food is always fresh and tasty and the ginger sponge is beyond delicious (even if the portion size is sometimes TOO generous!) Lovely staff too who always make us feel welcome. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a stop in Bakewell. It's not that easy to spot from the street but is very central and well worth seeking out.

What a find. Visited today on beautiful but freezing day. Saw the menu board outside and spotted the penchant to hot chocolate. How could I resist the temptation sit indoors warm with a nice hot chocolate. What a wonderful surprise we had. The cafe has a quite lovely welcoming and calm atmosphere. It was one of those places where a photo doesn’t quite give the “feel”. The staff were lovely too. I Had cream tea with the hot chocolate. Oh my. How wonderful. It was such a great change from the cheap powdered hot chocolate most places serve. It might be a 40 minute drive from home for me but worth the trip. It’s also a independent establishment too. I worry about the hospitality sector especially the independent establishments so would definitely recommend visiting the upstairs cafe. You won’t be disappointed.

Called in here for lunch one day - good selection of jacket potatoes and salads which my gluten-free husband could eat, and toasties, ciabattas and other sandwiches for me.Tables were a reasonable distance apart and we felt COVID safety had been taken into account.Speaking to the owner (?) when paying, it appears that they are unable to find sufficient staff and are seriously concerned about their ability to open fully in future, which is a pity. After walking along the Monsal Trail from Hassop Station, we dropped into the Upstairs Cafe for a late breakfast/early lunch. The cafe was clean, the staff friendly, the service quick, the food tasty and the price reasonable. So, why only a 3 out of 5 rating and the title "Great Food - Some Issues However" ?The owner greeted us as we entered. Technically, he was wearing a mask, but it doesn't really do anything if it leaves your nose and mouth exposed and merely keeps your chin warm! Throughout the entire period we were in there, he continued to walk around the cafe, talking to customers and delivering food to tables but at no time did he wear his mask properly. The picture shows him chatting to some customers (they appeared to be regulars) and you can see that his mask is not on correctly. This was in stark contrast to all of the other staff we saw that were wearing their masks correctly the whole time. This, in the current Covid-19 era, is bad enough. What, in my opinion, is worse is what we observed the owner do at one point when delivering food to a table. As he was walking from the kitchen area to the customer's table, a paper napkin blew off and fell to the floor. He hesitated, looked at the napkin, picked it up and delivered the napkin, cutlery and food to the table.Really? Your profit margins are that slim that you couldn't bin that napkin and get another one??Granted that most of the time people use a napkin on their laps to catch wayward food. However, some people also wipe their mouths after the meal (or their children's faces / mouths) and some use the napkin as a disposable paper hankie.Would you use it to wipe your mouth or childrens' mouths after it had been picked up off the floor??Such a shame as the food was generous, well cooked and good value. The wait staff were very pleasant and speedy. Needless to say, given the above, we won't be going back!I'd love to see if the owner responds and how he explains himself for the above actions.

Spent 4 nights in Bakewell at half-term. What a lovely town. Read the review so came here on final morning. WYSISWYG. Plentiful honest food. The service was as good as the review say so we tipped, in cash. The owner, likeable, while forthright (much prefer that to ingratiating) remarked how few people do, in these Covid-times. Therefore (of TripAdvisor lets me say this), may I appeal to you to carry some cash o tip the youngsters who served you, if they did a good job. They are the ones who will suffer most from the economic impact of the virus.

Tucked away above the cheese shop is this lovely little eatery. Ran by a gent who treats each customer like they’re royalty, with passion and pizzazz. Their meal deal for breakfast is a real steal at £4.50 for a large coffee and a sausage roll (amongst other options). Or for those that way inclined, £4.95 for a bakewell pudding/tart and any hot drink. Good selection of 80s tunes in the background as you dine. To paraphrase Yazz - the only way is upstairs cafe!

Despite being extremely busy (as it was Mother’s Day) the staff were phenomenal and our drinks, a black Americano and a salted caramel fudge latte, came out very quickly. As the service and vibe of the cafe was nice my girlfriend decided to grab a bite to eat as well, choosing from the ample menu (even for vegetarians) she settled on a child’s cheese and bean jacket potato. I’d hate to have come across the child that could finish the jacket potato on the playground as it was huge. She struggled to finish but as it was beautifully cooked she fought on and smashed it. Again it came out quickly and the bill at the end was surprisingly cheap. We were also incredibly shocked that it was dog friendly as normally places as nice as this don’t allow them, but she was even offered a drink and biscuits by the staff.

We found this coffee shop when we were visiting the town. We like to support independent, local places so we gave it a try. The chocolate cake and the coffee were pretty much average quality. Their billing system is a bit outdated and confusing, a more straightforward one would be helpful. However, I loved the handmade charity cards that they sell. I bought a couple of them and I think this is the best kind of souvenir I will take from Bakewell. I would encourage the owners to amke a stand for these cards as they are a real gem.

We were a family group of 4 plus a dog and were made to feel very welcome. Food was delicious, we didn’t wait long. All staff were cheerful and I would not hesitate to recommend others to visit.

Came in here as I found online it had vegan options. There is a option, it's beans on toast, otherwise nothing available at all. Disappointing.

Popped in for mid day meal ,just waited a short time for a table, we both had Steak pie, boiled potatoes, vegetables (beans, peas and broccoli) which was very hot. Also a coffee each .It`s surely great value for money. All staff are kind and cheery. Definitely call again

This was my second visit, and I’m delighted to say it was as good as my first. The food was fantastic, the value for money is excellent, and the staff (especially the owner) are extremely welcoming. Next time I’m in the area, a trip to upstairs is first on the list.

We popped into The Upstairs Cafe for the second time, this time just for a cuppa and a fruit scone. My wife, who is quite particular about her tea remarked that it was much to her liking and plentiful. And the scone was fresh and warm and quite large, with none of the soda taste often encountered elsewhere. We also noted that the portions of food served to other customers was very generous and piping hot where appropriate, which sums up the cafe in general. Service was brisk, attentive and friendly even though the cafe was almost full of customers (as usual). We can heartily recommend this cafe and is worth seeking out, the cafe is situated above a fruit and deli shop and adjacent to the Co-op on Market Street and not far from the river.

This little cafe has a small entrance in a row of shops with stairs up to it. It is extremely popular and you may have to wait to be seated, but it is worth it. The meal arrived incredibly fast and it was really hot. We had a steak pie and how they managed to get so many huge chunks of steak into it was a talking point and the crust was just amazing, our knives just went straight through it, definitely no hard crust and no soggy bottoms here either lol. The vegetables were fresh and plentiful. The whole meal was just delicious and the price was good also. The staff were so attentive and tables were cleared in minutes. This is a little gem of a place with a small gift shop attached.

This cafe is a little out of the mainstream having a small entrance on the ground floor next to a row of shops. We saw it featured on TA and thought we would give it a try. Right choice! The food was excellent, the service spot on and the value for money really good in a touristy area. They serve everything from sandwiches, jacket potatoes and so on to full meals so there should be something suitable whatever food you are seeking.

A delightful spot for a morning treat with good value morning specials until11.45, we had coffee and bagel in pleasant and relaxed surroundings. They also offered main meals and sandwiches which looked good but we didn't try. Central location above some shops.

I visited these tearooms with my daughters on Friday 24th May. I have been to other tea shops in Bakewell, but Toscas is by far the best. We had afternoon tea for three of us, we sat outside in the court yard. The afternoon tea arrived and there was lots of lovely cake and sandwiches, beautifully presented, and our host friendly and gave us a warm welcome. We really enjoyed our afternoon tea, very civilised, we will defiantly be visiting again. In fact we will have a day out to bakewell just to visit Toscas .

Fantastic cafe, the icing on the cake (no pun intended) being the birds feeding next to the window. The staff are friendly and efficient and the the food is of a good standard and reasonably priced. I can't understand the few negative reviews, maybe some folk have unfeasibly high standards/expectations?

We only live about 20 minutes and driven passed many times. We stopped on the way back from Buxton. They weren’t officially open however they were more than happy to serve us. It was awful weather outside but they had the log burner going so was gorgeous and warm. Cafe was all clean. Food delicious. Cakes scrumptious. The staff are so friendly. Car park is close and large. Definitely will be going again.
