DONT BOTHER THEY LIED Booked a party in the back room for 74 people. Phoned to make booking and wasnt even in the diary, luckily i went down physically to check. This could have been the first disaster as 74 people were invited. Then i was told it was FREE as using the bar. NO it cost me £80. So i was lied to & very upset as i already booked a DJ and food costing £600!!!! I would have picked another venue. During the party random people came in from the public. One women even started my buffet!!!! . I verbally chucked out five very drunk people throughout the evening.. Toilets were a mess. The room is clean & decorated but not for your taste if you don’t like shrovetide. Really not happy, the only saving grace was Annabelle who was very accommodating.. Finally ive been there twice for my party and my friends made it amazing not the venue. NEVER AGAIN i will not be lied to.

Cocktails not available although widely advertised. A few small children and a buggy,right opposite the bar at the bottom of stairs, in the thorough fair! After 9.30pm on a Saturday. Not sure that's allowed? Very odd mix of underage people. A private function in the back room that seemed to have spilled into the main bar area,perhaps? trange atmosphere.

Cheap drinks and a friendly welcome

Just called in to refuel and warm up. Great coffe and welcoming bar staff.

Very friendly place . We had walked our dogs around town one early evening and was cold and nowhere for a coffee and natter on a winter Tuesday evening. We went in here with our dogs and had a cheery welcome and dogs had biscuits and water from friendly bar lady . 2 lovely cups of tea /coffee . Great 👍

Came here on thursday to the races day. A lot of effort had been made to make the place look nice. It was a very enjoyable day you couldn't fault it. My friends & I all enjoyed it. Very well done to everyone 👏👏👏👏

Came to play pool match and was told that nobody keeps Dave mellor informed that foreigners are coming to play on his table, I am no foreigner, If my money isn't good enough to be spent in this bar then I'm sure that I can find elsewhere that would welcome myself and would appreciate my custom. I will be emailing committee members about this patron and would like a non biased reply

As a darts player in the Hartington league. I look forward to coming here to play, the staff always make us feel very welcome. There is an excellent choice of ales and a good buffet is always put out. A nice place overall

So nice to see the Poppy Restaurant open. Mum had booked meal for us a week previously and it was a delight. The carvery is fantastic with perfect crackling The staff all very attentive and the loveliest touch, and I admit I was choked, was the gift of a primula. These little touches make this a 5*plus.

Support needed for Ex Service Men. Enjoyed a short visit here. Nice to see somewhere for all ages to get together especially the older generation.

We booked for a family Xmas party, 40 adults and 4 toddlers. We had a 2 meat carvery, choice of various desserts & cheese and biscuits. It was absolutely fantastic! Everyone commented on how lovely the food was and the price was amazing! Ryan is a fab host, made the room xmassy for us and made sure we were looked after. Cannot fault it and recommend anyone to book for parties/gatherings etc!

Always pop in here for a couple of drinks with friends , when in Ashbourne there’s always a varied mix of customers and dogs are welcome,, there’s a pool table too and a good selection of beers , friendly atmosphere

Was a sad occasion, attended here for a wake. The bar, seating and cafe area were all clean, a bit worn out looking, but comfy and relaxing. The toilets were rather grim, very old and could do with updating. An ok place to go, guess it is more about the event and the atmosphere than the total look of the place. Nightmare to find somewhere to park if coming by car in the daytime.

Private bookable room to rear. Correct temeprature beers served at discounted rates to club members. Snooker tables available upstairs. Nice atmosphere.

The bar staff and manager were great ... but the place looks and feels tired and a bit grubby..... if I was a member or an ex service person, I’d be asking where all the money goes ... the carpet, chairs and toilets must be at least 30 years old ..... a revamp is well overdue!! I think our exservice personnel deserve it! A rugby club came in during my visit .... not good,..... quite a lot of inappropriate language pointed at, and about, women and ethic minorities. Made me feel uncomfortable so I left. This could be a great venue!

I will start by saying the Sunday Carvery is one of the best I’ve had in a very long time, There’s a choice of three meats, mash and roasts, stuffing and yorkshires and 8 different vegetable accompanied by gravy and condiments, Along with the food being superb the service and staff are also faultless, friendly, welcoming and happy in there job which shows, Overall a lovely family meal which we will not doubt be re-visiting!

Listening to probably the best rock tribute band it's been my pleasure to listen to at the Ex service mens club or anywhere else for that matter, Metal Fatigue! !!

While visiting Ashbourne me and my party of four went into the Ex servicemen's club on the market place, we noticed that they did food so we decided to have something to eat the food was very nice,the staff where also very helpful and friendly. Great place to visit and the new restaurant area is fantastic place not to be missed.. deffinatley be going back...

Went for a carvery. Was a last minute decision. Proved to be a good decision. Excellent. I had turkey and pork. Was carved quite thick, unlike some places who carve it paper thin. Veg were perfectly cooked. Superb. Thoroughly recommend it!

Went for Sunday Carvery with mother. On booking she had been told there would be turkey available. Even though there wasn't the young man went and cooked chicken breast for my husband who can't eat red meat. Thank you very much.

This was an interesting dining experience that I would not like to repeat.We were a party of eight and I was the only veggie in the group.I was offered a garlic mushroom dish for a starter which was I think a thick cream sauce with sliced mushrooms buried in the sauce,there was no finesse in the way the food was presented by the gum chewing waitress it was simply plonked in front of me.It was very strange offering I've never had garlic mushrooms served like this.My main course was I think leak and potato pie,which was a ceramic bowl full of the mixture with a puff pastry lid,again it was served with no finesse or care and I went up to the carvery to choose my veg.The pie was ok and the veg were as expected definite carvery fare.My dessert was a lemon tart which was a served partly frozen and resembled a cheese cake with a crunchy topping.Now all this came to £16 plus drinks,which was the major positive,if you want to eat cheap then this is the place for you.The food was all edible and we were to busy enjoying ourselves to worry about the quality of food served.If you were a meat eater then I guess the carvery was ok.But I think if this establishment is serious about becoming a decent restaurant it needs to present the food with a bit of care,eating out should be enjoyable,an occasion not something to be tolerated.You should treat alternative food requirements such as veggies with respect and serve food that has been given some thought.It really felt like I had time travelled back to the seventies the way the food was presented.So would I go back again,no it was not the kind of dining experience I would want to repeat.

Great bar for a swift half or two before and/or after dinner. Friendly staff and locals. Decent pint of beer. They've recently opened a restaurant too but we did not get round to eating here this time. We will certainly pop in again next time we're in Ashbourne
