Our favourite for a quiet pub with good food and no pressure to eat up and go (we had a round of cards). Mind your head if you go up to the higher dining area.

My wife and I had a meal here on a night away and it massively exceeded our expectations! The food was superb, cooked to perfection and full of flavour whilst the pub had a great selection of beer with a lovely atmosphere and genuinely friendly staff!! I had the Stilton and Broccoli soup, Beef stroganoff and Lemon meringue and my wife had the Scotch egg, Lamb rump special and crumble and we'd recommend every single one! We wouldn't hesitate to come back if we were in the area again but booking is most definitely advised 👍🏼

We tried the Red Lion whilst staying in the village, on a Sunday afternoon. The place was packed, but managed yo get a table in the back. Dogs are welcome and made a fuss of by staff. Service was respectful and efficient. Not the cheapest of prices but heyho it's the only pub in the village. The food looked delicious although we didn't eat. This pub feels cosy and friendly, the sort you could while-away the cold times in.

Friendly welcome. It is a small and compact pub and, given it's dog friendly, quite a tight squeeze depending on the size of your dog. We waited at the bar to be seated and then realised a waitress had been stood next to us the whole time. Menu was labelled for gluten free. Burger bun was good for gluten free, but portions were small considering the price. We had to go to the bar twice to order drinks, so whilst friendly the service wasn't overly attentive. It was a nice enough country pub in a lovely village with good enough food, but we've definitely been in better.

So impressed with our visit to the Red Lion! As a group of 26 staying in a large holiday home nearby for the weekend, we had little hope of finding anywhere that could accommodate us on a Saturday but the team here made it happen with only a couple of days notice. Homemade pork scratchings were devoured upon our arrival. Once sat down, the food came out quickly (which we were desperate for after a big walk), piping hot and exactly correct to our orders. We all had at least 2 courses so I think we tried near enough the whole menu and every single one of us said how delicious the homemade food was. Big pie slices absolutely stuffed with tender meat, perfect proper chips, fresh fish and the sticky toffee pudding was the group's highlight Thank you so much to the team for giving us all a lovely evening out together.

This is an ancient pub set in an attractive village which has managed to keep its shop-cum-post office. After an unfortunate experience with a thieving Labrador many years ago, we somehow never got round to visiting the Red Lion again until the other day - and we were glad we did. Muzak was tolerable, general ambience very pleasant, and the meals excellent. We approved of the unusual approach to something as ordinary as Homity Pie. We shan't leave it so long before our next visit!

Despite the change in ownership, and the minor changes in the menu (to upset the dyed in the wool clientele) this remains, by far, the best pub for miles around. The steak pie, the quality of which cannot be over exaggerated, is superb. Five cask ales to choose from, the Abbeydale Absolution being very moreish, despite my best efforts at moderation. Very friendly principals and staff, nothing being to much trouble. Dog friendly, as opposed to dog tolerant. The archetypal English pub.

I love The Red Lion and usually come a few times a year but today was disappointing. I understand they have a new menu but was very sad to see so many of the dishes we’d previously enjoyed not now featuring. No shepherds pie, none of the traditional home made desserts like bread and butter pud or crumble or lemon meringue, for which this pub used to be so well known. I chose the steak pie which I used to always love but today it was lukewarm. If it had not been available I’d have struggled as the menu felt v short on the previous good quality, home made classics.

Beautiful place, lovely friendly welcome and the food is 100% all fresh and home cooked at a very good price. A party of six of us visited for food and to show international students a traditional english pub with good food. Needless to say we were not disappointed, the girls ate and enjoyed all of their food! (Daube of beef, pork belly, gammon x2, shepherds pie and a burger) not forgetting the puddings too! The chefs are clearly very well established with a great menu "pub food" but restaurant quality. The place has a lovely friendly feel to it and customers are made to feel very welcome. Read if you have young children. I’m sad as was really looking forward to visiting this pub after passing on a bike ride. There is a sign outside welcoming muddy boots and paws. I was disappointed therefore to find a sign on the door proclaiming no children under 6 allowed. We therefore didn’t venture in as we obviously were not welcome with our 4 year old but two things struck me - the business must be booming when they can turn away people with small children - how on earth can dirty dogs be allowed and not people. 🤷♂️

We visited the Red Lion today after a long walk. We didn’t know food wasn’t served in the bar but the lovely lady behind the bar managed to squeeze us into a table in the dining area. When our greyhound took up too much room I decided to bring him back to the bar so he could lay down, fully expecting that I wouldn’t be able to have food. The lovely lady behind the bar instead said I could order food and was extremely understanding, making a point of coming over to give our dog some treats and have a chat with me. I had some chips which were extremely tasty and my friends had a roast, fish and chips and gammon which they all said was lovely.
