Read if you have young children. I’m sad as was really looking forward to visiting this pub after passing on a bike ride. There is a sign outside welcoming muddy boots and paws. I was disappointed therefore to find a sign on the door proclaiming no children under 6 allowed. We therefore didn’t venture in as we obviously were not welcome with our 4 year old but two things struck me - the business must be booming when they can turn away people with small children - how on earth can dirty dogs be allowed and not people. 🤷‍♂️

We visited the Red Lion today after a long walk. We didn’t know food wasn’t served in the bar but the lovely lady behind the bar managed to squeeze us into a table in the dining area. When our greyhound took up too much room I decided to bring him back to the bar so he could lay down, fully expecting that I wouldn’t be able to have food. The lovely lady behind the bar instead said I could order food and was extremely understanding, making a point of coming over to give our dog some treats and have a chat with me. I had some chips which were extremely tasty and my friends had a roast, fish and chips and gammon which they all said was lovely. The pub had a great atmosphere with lots of different dogs and people were friendly and chatty. Would definitely visit again if in the area - thank you so much for your understanding!

Called in for lunch although busy we were seated quickly. The food arrived quickly and was well presented and hot. I had steak pie and while the meat was tender and the pastry was nice it was totally without any taste. My partner had a roast which was average. The main thing was how cold it was where we were seated and although I didn't venture to the loo's the ladies on the next table said it was absolutely baltic in there. Would have liked to have a desert but decided against it in favour of getting in the car and warming up.

I would rate this place zero, but unfortunately don't have the option to do so. In summary, the portions are meagre. The Sunday lunch has overdone, dry Yorkshire puddings. Really don't like the woman who runs this place, she's got no customer skills whatsoever and looks miserable. I've been put off coming back because if they don't have what you order, they substitute items on the plate without asking you. What level of stupid is that?!

A beautiful old pub, with many books and crannies situated in a delightful village. There's some outdoor seating on the green in front. We had a meal of steak and ale pie with veg, which was extremely tasty and the steak was very tender. If I'm being ultra critical I would have liked a bit more veg, but I certainly didn't leave hungry. The sticky toffee pudding was also excellent. Probably most importantly the Ale was top notch and the pub has won Camra awards for the beer.

Homity pie with salad and sweet potato fries falsely advertised, when I asked where the fries were they said they hadn't been on for months( despite the menu saying it did!). I expected a refund , they asked how much I wanted, I asked for £4 ( ordinary fries were £3.50) .Later, at the end of my meal they changed their tune, they said I had been given extra salad and a tiny bit of chutney and that was the replacement so it was going to be full price. NB I wasn't asked what ' replacement' I wanted ,plus the 'extra' salad seemed not believable to me as the original amount would have had to have been tiny, more like a garnish, if the bit I ended up was a supposed an extra portion. Anyway who wants yet more salad when you are expecting fancy fries? I paid full price of £14 for a potato pie with chopped up lettuce and a few tiny bits of tomatoes in the end. I could, and would have , chosen a different meal, I could have had a veggie roast for approximately that price if the menu had correctly told me what I was getting for the money. Terrible customer service. No apology, no part refund for their mis advertised and mis sold product

site_logo

MORE AT TripAdvisor

My homity pie order was meant to come with salad and sweet potato fries, written down on the menu as such. The fries were missing, I was told that they hadn't been available for months. Note the menu has not been amended to reflect this. I was mis sold something with no apology . I expected to get a price reduction for the missing food and at first was asked how much I wanted. I said four pounds ( ordinary chips were £3.50 so I thought this reasonable , otherwise I was paying £14 for potato pie and lettuce and tomato,). They then changed their tune and somebody else I said I had just been given extra salad and two teaspoonfuls some onion chutney thing instead of the fries. I said that it was not ok. I never requested a replacement, never wanted the chutney ( which was tiny), never given any choice. Also I questioned that the salad was actually bigger, it came in some standard size container - if it was meant to be a smaller container originally it would have been no bigger than a salad garnish so therefore I find it hard to believe the salad was really bigger- and anyway I paid for, and was expecting , the special fries. They didn't even offer ordinary chips.Unfortunately we had already paid, otherwise they would never have got a full price payment from me for a meal missing a substantial part of what was advertised. Terrible customer service for falsely advertising a meal and no apology or part time refund. A busy pub can get away with this kind of behaviour.

I visited with my husband and children for dinner and from the moment we arrived the whole family were welcomed. We ordered drinks, a good selection of quality alcoholic and none alcoholic and were shown to a lovely cosy table. The menu is simple but lots of pub classics. I had the ham, egg and chips which was delicious, home made chips and proper sliced ham. My husband had the pie which was full of meat and came with a lovely side of veg. We had been in Derbyshire for the day with the dog and stumbled across The Red Lion when looking for somewhere to eat. What a brilliant find! So lovely and cosy inside and lots of different little rooms. A proper village pub. I had one of the day's specials, lamb shank served with garlic mash, green beans and lamb jus. I can honestly say it is one of the most delicious things I have tasted and piping hot! My husband had the 10oz steak with all the trimmings and also said it is one of the best he's had. My son asked for the steak and ale pie with chips and veg but unfortunately this had run out. So instead he had homity pie, which was a kind of cheesy mash with leek inside a pie case. He said the pie was very tasty, but it came with sweet potato wedges (so potato in the pie and more potato) and a small dish of chopped up salad which contained onion - he doesn't like onion so only picked a few bits out. Maybe as the pie already contained potato it would be good to serve with two different veg on the side instead of potato wedges? But he did enjoy what he had. The staff were very efficient and friendly and there was a good menu, also a variety of sandwiches and nibbles if you didn't want a full meal. Thoroughly recommended.

Very friendly principals and staff who go out of their way to make you welcome and indulge in friendly banter; the waitress remembered the last conversation we’d had almost three months ago! Had a lovely dinner at the Red Lion, steak and ale pie was huge and delicious! Pub itself was great, felt genuinely old and historic. We did have an issue with ordering for coeliac: the honey roast ham was marked as gluten free on the menu, but then the waitress noted that the mustard they use in it contains wheat after they had already cooked it (but before it was served). This meant we had to order a different GF dish (there are a few options so not an issue) and wait for longer. The staff did well to catch this in time, but worth being careful ordering here if you need gluten free!
