Charles Take Away in Cheltenham

the food itself is lovely , when it actually arrives. on two occasions now they have missed items from my order. how can you forget to add the chips to fish and chips. when there's so much competition in cheltenham i would of thought Charles would step up, considering how long they've been in the area. safe to say i won't be ordering from them again.

I used to absolutely love Charlie’s chippy and would go out of my way to drive there even though there are other establishments closer to my house however on my last two visits I’ve been really disappointed. On the first, I ordered a large chips and in the middle of eating them I found a piece of kebab meat. Being a non meat eater this really put me off and quite frankly shouldn’t be happening. On the second visit I arrived to three members of staff sat outside the front of the shop smoking cigarettes and vaping. After they were finished they came straight back in behind the counter with no change of clothes or even a hand wash before returning to work. Not acceptable and not what I would expect from a chip shop I used to hold to such high standards of quality in staff and food.

is this a fish cake? why is it so peppery? is this normal? such a shame as the homemade tartar is nice

I suggested to some friends who have recently moved into town to try Charles. The said they fish was lovely but the batter rubbery. The live almost next door so no trouble with then travelling a distance. I went today lovely chips, lovely pie and a tasty battered sausage - but the batter was certainly not crispy. I’ve had many takeaways from this place and never had soggy batter. That said it was still lovely and I and my friends will definitely be back soon

I'm from up north and the chips and gravy are on point. Also great customer service, look forward to coming back.

Whenever I come back to Cheltenham from the Wars I always have to visit Charles Takeway after 40 years of being a customer. I hope old Charles is still going well and supervising the youngsters. Before I enter the shop after a 5 year break Charles's Cypriot nephew (balding now!) has a giant piece of haddock ready to drop into the fryer without asking. Cooked to perfection as always and I stand at the end of counter pigging out. Great place and everyone works hard to please a diverse group of clients, drunk or sober. Spies from GCHQ and the police use Charles Takeaway. It's a pity that security is required outside the door due to the pondlife who can't hold their liquor and make fools of themselves at weekends. Drooling at the mouth right now a few thousand miles away in Afghanistan in the mountains thinking about fish and chips. The only placd to match Charles Takeaway is the Shanghai Brewery, Shanghai where a chef from Birmingham serves up delicious cod and chips with Filipina waitresses and a micro brewery too.

I have been using Charles Take Away for many years and their food is the best around. Any chance you can open a shop in the Forest Of Dean?

Really tasty fish and chips, very quick service and the food was hot. Recommend the curry sauce! Will visit again soon.

Our family always enjoy our weekend fish and chip dinner from Charlie’s. The food is excellent and good value. Fish and chips is always fresh and the burgers and curry sauce is always a firm favourite too. Service is friendly and good social distancing measures in place. I placed a order through deliveroo had confirmation to say my order had been delivered. No food came, so contacted Charles chippy and explained and they couldn't be more helpful, told me to call deliveroo again and not to be soft with them. So I did the guy on the phone said ok sorry about that we will credit your account and reorder your food so I'm thinking great and was thankful. How short lifted was that. Again had comfir6that food had been delivered which it hadn't so on the phone I go again to deliveroo and all I had was well what do you want us to do. In the end I had to use the credit on my account and get my partner to go and collect the order as it was for my dad who is disabled. I will always and will continue to use charles chippy as they are the best and so nice but I will never use deliveroo again. They will lose this fantastic chippy customers the way are. So please do get your food from the chippy just not through deliveroo.

Just had our first takeaway since the lockdown and my goodness it was good.!Nice fresh cod and chips for myself and my wife's favourite spring roll and chips. Well worth waiting for , welcome back Charles chippy.

What's not to like? Lovely big and clean chippy with a great menu. Chips were particularly good. We arrived just before closing time but the staff were still very friendly. The food arrived very quickly.

OMG I’ve tried Simpsons but Charles was so much better. Classic cod and chips and homemade fish cakes tasted amazing. Food served piping hot and very very tasty.

Service was quick, but kinda rude. The food wasn't too bad overall but some of the chips were literally dripping in grease and it was very off-putting.

Charles Takeaway has a long history of producing the best fish and chips in Cheltenham and continues to do so. When I visited Cheltenham last week this was once more confirmed to me. They were delicious. Highly recommended

We got 10 portions of fish and chips and a large battered sausage earlier in the month and everything was perfect. We have gone here many times before and everything has always been as expected. It is easy to get to. The staff are friendly. Excellent.

Charlie's Chips is a Cheltenham institution, known for its great quality fish, consistently good chips but also do not over look their fried chicken and more importantly their chicken donor.

Quite simple. The best chippy I've ever been to. You can travel the world, eat in Michelin starred restaurants but after a night out in Cheltenham this knocks spots off anything. Really great chips, pies, kebabs and great service in a clean shop. Fabulous.

A safe bet for a good fish and chips. The haddock is usually a five minute wait, but cooked fresh and well worth it.

Forget soggy fish and tired old chips. My cod & chips was freshly cooked, piping hot and tasted very good indeed. A large portion. Good value for money at only £5.90. Located in the centre of Cheltenham. I'd recommend.

Ordered cod and chips twice early on a Saturday evening. The service was very quick and attentive by two members of staff! The cod was lovely and tender and the batter was just right (and fresh). There were loads of chips and they were excellent too. Their prices were very reasonable too. Definitely the best I've tasted!

I came in with a friend to pick up some dinner after work recently after not visiting for a while, and we weren't disappointed. I had a cheese burger and chips and she had cod and chips. The food was hot and fresh, portions were big and most importantly it tasted great. Highly recommended and I will definitely be coming in more often.

Every time that I visit Cheltenham, I have to have fish and chips, mushy peas, and gravy. No other place serves this better than Charles'! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in or near Cheltenham. Fantastic!!!

After reading the good reviews I thought I would pick up my Fish and Chips here this evening. The fish was of very good quality, it was wonderfully flaky and tasted delicious. Unfortunately the batter wasn't as crispy as I would have liked, but this can be forgiven as the fish was so good. The chips were pretty good and a decent size. I just about managed to finish off a small chips and large cod. I always get a pot of curry sauce with my fish supper but I was disappointed with the offering here; it wasn't like the curry sauce you get from most other chippys. Having said that, it's clear from plenty of other reviews that their curry sauce is loved by many so don't let me put you off trying it!We are spoilt for choice with great chippys in Cheltenham (Simpson's and Big Fish especially) but I'm pretty sure I'll return to Charlie's soon.

Never easy frying chips during the summer months what with the new potatoes, so the ones I had were quite good - as was the beef and onion pie. The fish cake was odd, it tasted of mushy peas and was quite unpleasant. The fish looked good and the place is spotless, so worth a try.

I ate countless takeaways here growing up in Cheltenham and loved the cheese burger. I recently returned to see whether it was as good as I remember and can honestly say that it is still the best takeaway burger that I have had in this country. The serving is large, the beef is beautifully flame grilled with that burnt taste so often missing, the salad is ample and fresh, and the burger relish is delicious.

My favorite take away in Cheltenham. A huge choice of food, massive portions, rarely a wait for anything, and at two in the morning a fun place just to watch the hustle and bustle!

I walked past the recently re-opened shop and turned to my Canadian guest and asked whether she has tried this very traditional dish. When she replied in the negative we went in and in the course of conversation mentioned to the man serving that this was going to be a first for her. He kindly wrapped the fish and chips in paper and we walked to the Promenade and there on a park bench consumed this delicious meal. I was surprised because I hadn't expected such fabulous cod and the chips weren't bad either!!

So glad these guys are back open as its our regular. We visited a few fish and chip shops in town whilst they were closed and nothing compares to Charlie's. In our eyes they come up tops for quality, price, choice and service. We came and brought dinner for all the family. Beautiful and tasty fish and chips. The burgers are delicious too. So good this place has reopened after the fire. Would always come here for my patented late night post-show chippy after a night at the Town Hall for example. They never lost it, never mind still having it. A piece of Cheltenham is restored. Welcome back!

What's to say? Quick to serve, with hot chips, and just the right amount of salt and vinegar. Absolutely the bedrock of my lunch break - the place you go to when you want to treat yourself, but don't have time for a full on sit-down meal. Will be here quite a lot once it reopens (a fire has temporarily closed the venue), as need to make up for lost time.

I've been to 'Charlies chippy' hundreds of times, the staff are always very nice and chatty. The Flame grilled burgers are epic! Was such a shame when the fire happened. Cant wait till you're back.

Having lived in Cheltenham for many a year now this is the only chip shop to go to. Can't wait for them to reopen! Life is wrong without being able to pop here for a cheeky chip supper. If you're ever in Cheltenham please make sure you choose this chip shop. You won't be disappointed.

I came into Charlie's yesterday to buy some food for dinner for the first time as I've heard good things...it was delicious. The fish batter was lovely and crispy, probably one of the best portions of fish and chips I've had. My partner loved his burger and the chips were cooked to perfection. The service was also polite and efficient. I can't recommend this takeaway enough, there's obviously a reason why it's been running for over 40 years!

My father went last night as a bit of a treat. The fish was grey, tasted and looked awful. The pie was sloppy and the chips were pale, soft and full of grease. Only live 5 mins up the road but was too much faff to go back. Awful. Really disappointed.

Charles take away is gem hidden among the streets of Cheltenham, the staff never fail to tend to the people of this town - from the the weary night clubbers to the tired taxi drivers and everyone in between. I frequently buy food from Charlie's and whether it's a lunch order, dinner or after a night out, I'm never disappointed! Went to Charles takeaway after a night out with the lads and have to say that although there was a little wait, it was expected as the queues were huge! To be honest, I can't blame them for the queues because the food is always tasty, fresh and the staff are always friendly. Will be revisiting again when we go out, I definitely recommend this chippy to anybody.

Charlie's is a chip shop. But its a great chip shop. Its open until the early hours, doormen keep those who've had a few drinks in check and the staff are friendly and very patient with the early hours customers slurring their words and being indecisive! Food its good chip shop food, kebabs are great, chips not too greasy. You might have to queue as its so popular but its worth the wait.

Charles (we call is Charlies as it's easier to say than Charles-s-s) staff are always really friendly.The chips are great, not over-greasy and a portion is a really good size. Good value. The service is quick, and they're open until very late (or early, depending on your perspective!) Also located by a taxi rank, so super handy if you wish to grab some chips before heading home in a taxi.

One of the best if not the best fish and chip shop in Cheltenham!Because they are often busy the food always seems fresh. Good chips, great fish that isn't in soggy batter.Have often gone to Charlies after a night out or in the day then sit on a bench in town people watching enjoying the fish and chips. Nice mushy peas too! And staff are efficient and polite.

Been going to Charlie's for over 20 years and only had great service and great fish and chips!They catered my wedding in May (120 people) and did the most amazing job, can't recommend them more!

When back in Cheltenham, i always go to 2 chippys, Simpsons and Charles. Simpsons is always better but last year Charles was a lot better than it was this time round. I love fish and chips in paper, its the way it should be but this time they were just way too greasy and soggy and not in the prime condition we were hoping for with our 2min drive back to our hotel. Also i think the ketchup costs are high. 20p for a small sachet is a little pricey. Will still be back next year to see how it is then

Following a heavy day at the races I was enjoying a nice bit of hand carved serano ham in the pub next door served with olives and different breads. My mate arrived with a battered sausage from Charles. We dropped the fancy stuff and The whole of our group were in there for one within minutes. Great takeaway
