Charles Street Bar in Brighton and Hove

Absolutely appalled in the way myself and my partner were treated here. Fake accusations and asking us to leave is completely out of order and the embarrassment caused! Was waiting to meet my son and his boyfriend for the first time, and fake accusations leading us to be asked to leave. Raised concerns apparently with the staff according to HR. But please be aware of this place. If you liked to be accused of taking drugs than it's the place to go! Maybe they should look closer at themselves!

Came here for a bottomless brunch for my friend's birthday, and it was absolutely lovely. The staff were SO friendly, and really added to the casual atmosphere. The drinks were great and so was the food, and it was all pretty cheap for how much we had. Absolutely would come again.

Me and my partner have been here plenty of times. And last night she chose to meet her son and his boyfriend for the first time here. We had just been for a meal down the road and had only just sat down for drinks. I went to the toilet, came back up for 5 mins and said I have to pop back down to blow my nose as it might help a slight headache I had. When I came back up I was instructed by security to come outside for a chat. They then informed me that ‘the manager’ had seen me doing drugs in the toilet supposedly. This was a total lie and my partner came over to tell them it’s rubbish. I offered a full body search, every pocket etc which they refused. I also said if this manager had seen me do that, as a manager surely they’d tell me to leave themselves straight away and not go back upstairs to tell security to get me to leave. They didn’t have no answer to anything and wouldn’t let me speak to this ‘manager’. They also said I’m allowed to finish my drink and then I’d have to leave. But that just added to the confusion as surely if I’d been doing drugs I’d be asked to leave immediately. But no, finish your drinks then go. We was so shocked and offended we decided to leave our drinks we’d just brought and changed any plans we had to the evening. My partner has emailed the bar to ask for an explaination but this hasn’t been replied to as of yet. What was worse is I could see plenty of people around the bar which looked much worse for where then me but they didn’t get targeted for some reason.

Gray was amazing with my allergies. They made sure to go through everyone of my allergies with the meals to make sure I was able to eat a safe option. Thankyou so much, a lot of waiters don't care as much :)

Probably the best bar in Brighton. Been going since I was 19, now 42. Friendly and rather yummy staff 😋 who always greet you with a smile. Food is delicious and always hits the spot! A place to feel welcomed and relaxed. What more could you ask for.

Gray single handedly saved my life Before the outstanding bbq chicken pizza and the service by Gray I was dragging myself through life. Since this bottomless brunch and the pivotal experience we had with Gray I have a renewed lease on life I haven’t felt so free and fulfilled since childhood Would absolutely recommend Charles street tap to anyone who needs a reason to go on.

Food was great, but we was left without drinks for a while and we felt ignored when it came to drinks. There was 2 of us and a few big tables that seem to be more prioritised over us. We also asked for the nachos to share (we had the bottomless brunch) and then we chose pizza and burger for our main. They explained that I had to pay extra for the nachos which was fine but when it came to paying we was charged for the pizza as an extra rather then the nachos. We also didn’t like the fact that empty glasses were just left on tables. We had to ask twice just for some water, and there was no toilet roll in the 2 of the female toilets. I’m unsure whether we would come back.

Had a wonderful time here tonight, was a quiet one but we did go on a Wednesday, the food was amazing along side how quickly it was brought to our table after ordering, a fantastic selection of drinks and great all around feel to the location, plus the two staff members who served us were beyond lovely people! Will definitely be back asap!

Came here to have a drink and stayed for food, and me and my friends couldn’t stop passing it around so we could share as we couldn’t agree who had the better dinner. The staff are amazing. Grey and Vicki were amazing and asking all the questions we had. Thanks again it was amazing

Good for cheap food and drink. Visited again recently, food price is climbing but the quality is not. They now do cocktails but charge the same price as premium cocktail bars in Brighton, having a laugh. Update 03/01/2024 Haven't been here for months, the menus have changed. I enjoyed the food I had, I like the relaxed atmosphere, garden area and seating. Will be visiting again. The team that work there are lovely.

Lively, well staffed, excellent drinks and smoking area. Update: Went in there for 'Craft Thursday'. A fiver for a pint of any kind of craft loveliness you want, and the selection of IPAs is magnificent! And it's still brilliant, and the kiddie behind the bar was a class act.

Such a lovely pub with great architecture and atmosphere. We had some small bites and everything was cooked really well. The staff were friendly and the music was pretty good too!

Sam y Josh hicieron nuestra experiencia de almuerzo sin fondo la mejor de la historia. Muy atento y considerado. Mantuvo las bebidas fluyendo sin que tuviéramos que llamar su atención. ¡Estaban en él como un capó de coche! Este bar es el mejor, siempre se ha debido al personal como Josh y Sam. La comida era genial, así que las mejores calificaciones para el chef.

Came for bottomless brunch with my mum, had the most amazing server, Sam. He made our visit so personal and memorable. The drinks were constantly flowing. The team were amazing.. and so were the cocktails!! We will be returning

Me and my friends went for a bottomless brunch and Brad was our server. He was so lovely and and was very attentive and accommodating. He knew the right rules of bottomless brunch which we appreciated. Brad is the best!

There was 7 of us commemorating my youngest brother today, we was only having a couple of drinks, arrived around 2pm I got home at 10.45 pm.. fab staff, hilarious drag acts...felt at home..

Great place to meet friends and they also have great food too! Plenty of choice of food at a reasonable price. Super friendly staff and when it’s not a weekend it’s lovely, cozy and quiet. It’s a lovely environment with plenty of options on drinks and evening entertainment too. Perfect location and easily accessible.

During the week it's a nice place to come and relax not too busy and you can do what you want and what great service and the staff know their stuff and know their regs that come in.... Deffo recommend for the night life at the weekends etc 10/10

Visitamos este fantástico bar mientras asistíamos a mediados del fin de semana. El equipo allí era muy acogedor. Mi hijo tenía la masa de galletas y dijo que es el mejor postre que ha probado. Le gustó tanto que volvimos otro par de veces. También tuvimos los nachos que eran muy buenos. El bar era precioso y limpio, la comida era fantástica y el equipo era tan cálido y acogedor. Sin duda recomendaría.

This is a lovely pub near bus stops and just a walk across the road is Sealife Centre and Brighton beach! We love going in here as we know the food is good as well as the service! They usually serve quite a few different real ales,but unfortunately they had run out and waiting for new order! We find it's quieter at lunch time too when we go there!

Excellent pub. Caters very well for the LGBTQ+ community. Visited during the day so didn't get the full evening or weekend experience. Ate fish finger sub with some nice skinny fries, sub good if slightly dry. Served by Spencer who was so helpful, friendly ... kind of like me transplanted from my local Stonegate pub into here ! (Please note this review is unbiased as a customer not an employee of Stonegate in a pub 60 miles away - I usually refrain from reviewing Stonegate pubs in London area due to conflict of interests). Recommended as start of a Kemptown pub crawl 🍺 depending which end of Kemptown you start from of course. Thank you staff ❤

I really like this bar but shots at £5.50 each......OUCH!!! I bought a round of shots for 5 people. It was £27.50 😬

Korean Chicken burger was awesome as well as the beer on tap. It’s a LBGTQ+ friendly restaurant with a performance stage and small casino.

Don’t usually leave reviews.. came in for lunch, it was pretty much empty, us (table of 3) , one table of maybe 7 people and 2 other people at a table. Ordered food, payed, and then the server came over and told us the wait for our food would actually be 45mins because they had a big table.. god knows what service is like when the place is busy, there was only 2 tables eating. So we waited 45 mins, food came, and the chips were burnt and pure grease, and to be honest it was all burnt. Didn’t really eat much of it .. Disappointing for the price of it all..

Been to this place twice now and both times I’ve had such a very very good night. The music has been brilliant, the beers are amazing and the prices aren’t horrific. The staff have been fun both times and even helpful and patient when I’ve needed it. But seriously, the bathrooms were like a battle ground of fluids, solids and loo roll everywhere. The person sitting by the bottom of the stairs was useless and didn’t seem to care about the mess or wanted to help. That being said if you are careful and go with someone you’ll be fine. I found the atmosphere of the whole place incredible and even the people who have been there have been fun. Just please sort the loos out

Better than average pub grub, not much beer selection on tap; I enjoyed an Amsdel. Congenial gay atmosphere. Decent place in great location on the waterfront.

Visited this pub a few times while visiting Brighton and everything was great can't fault it.

It's changed a bit inside since I last went there but it does have a stage which means it has performers, the drinks are a reasonable price and the tables are laid out so you can watch the act or have a little private booth to yourself.

I was extremely disappointed with my recent visit to your establishment on my way to a meeting with an associate. As someone who enjoys a cold beverage, I was looking forward to grabbing a drink at your establishment. However, my experience was far from satisfactory.

 Upon arriving, I requested a specific drink, only to be met with the response, 'We don't sell that.' Nevertheless, I decided to give your establishment another chance and requested a different draft lager. To my dismay, I was informed that both the second and third options were out of stock. I couldn't believe it - how could a business not have their advertised drinks in stock?

Feeling frustrated at this point, I was ready to give up and just grab a drink from the nearby supermarket. But since I was short on time, I settled for a soft drink from your menu.

In hindsight, I regret not just grabbing a can of Pepsi from the supermarket and enjoying it on the beautiful seafront. Not only would it have been cheaper, but it also would have saved me the disappointment and frustration of my experience at your establishment.

I understand that these things happen and that sometimes certain items may be out of stock. However, as a paying customer, I expect to be informed beforehand and not be met with a lack of knowledge and poor service. I hope that in the future, your establishment can improve in terms of stocking and customer service.

Overall, my visit was a complete letdown and I left feeling disappointed and dissatisfied. I hope that you will take this review into consideration and make the necessary changes to improve the experience for your customers. Thank you.

The best place to see Cabaret on a Sunday, amazing roast dinner and always lovely service! Love the photography around the pub too! Very dog friendly and really nice smoking area.

Since the club “Above” doesn’t have its own Google Maps location, I have to review Charles St instead. I have been to Above a few times over 6 years. My first time was Polyglamorous and my most recent was Apocalypse yesterday. Every single time I go, the queue for drinks is outrageous. They are always understaffed and it takes 25 minutes to get a drink. I was going to let this be, but my visit yesterday was just shocking. If it’s 25 minutes for a drink, and you get 3 drinks across the night, you will queue for 75 minutes. If you’re there 12-3am, that’s ONE THIRD of your night wasted. I have been to raves and club nights in equally (and sometimes more) busy venues in London and Brighton, and they are always so much quicker. This completely ruins the venue, which is otherwise serviceable. Half my friend group left after queuing for 15 minutes. And who can blame them? I’m sad I have to 1 star Charles Street as a whole for this, as the bar downstairs is fantastic. And I’m sure I’ll get some response about times being tough and that’s why staffing is low. But it was like this in 2018 as well. There’s no excuse anymore. How are you so unaware of what your busiest nights are?

Wasn't the busiest of nights but the atmosphere was buzzing and the music was amazing. Service at the bar was quick and efficient.
