Chapter Edgbaston in Birmingham

Good food with a few nice twists good service with staff on hand but not overbearing restaurant was quiet but our sitting was 2pm Friday afternoon so that might explain why I thought the cost of food was very reasonable - wines started at about £35 which again I don’t have an issue with Will go again and would recommend

This sadly was not what we’d hoped our evening would be. Having recently dined at Chapter on their Prix Fix dinner, this occasion the food we were presented with was by far not comparable to our previous visit. I say this with conviction as the starters ordered were exactly the same- well not quite! The Pastrami starter was half the size of the previous visit and this time comprised of a deep edge of soft fat. I’m annoyed I didn’t take a photo of it but asked for these dishes to be replaced without the fat and perhaps a comparable portion size to the one I showed our waitress a picture of which we ate three weeks prior. I might add she very professional and apologetic in her approach . However things turned sour when the chef walked towards our table, arms folded and tried his best to intimidate us which I certainly was not prepared to accept on any level. His manner was not receptive and when I said this dish was predominantly fat I was told “it is where the flavour is…it is full of flavour” Really!.. soft fat is something to be relished? After he stood over us for a good five minutes, arms folded throughout, he clearly was not prepared to acknowledge that we were not happy with his reasoning. The body language of folded arms is not what you expect from anyone and certainly not from an establishment of this stature. This behaviour is not something that should ever be presented to a guest. This treatment left such a foul taste in all our mouths that we left our table and restaurant. I will add that the restaurant was empty when we arrived and there were only 2 diners when we left. Not too stressful on the kitchen! Such a shame as we did enjoy our previous visit but can categorically say we won’t be returning any time soon. There are so many other places to visit.

Mid-week dinner with friends. The food is good and interesting, though portion size is small. Pig cheek starter was nice and others enjoyed various dishes. Wine very expensive (actually, the whole thing was very expensive). Downside was the service which wasn’t great. Long waits for food (and they weren’t busy). Had to ask several times for the bill and (after it had eventually appeared) had to go to the bar to pay since all the waiting staff were avoiding contact.

After a stessful start due to parking, we quickly eased into a very enjoyable and relaxing evening at Chapter. We wanted to try the prix fix deal of 2 courses and a glass of house wine for &30 pp and we were not disappointed. Sometimes these offers can be sub standard to the main menu but this certainly wasn’t the case. Our food was exceptional, with the additional sides generous for the three of us to share. The wines on offer with this menu very good and even the cocktails we enjoyed before ordering were very good too. Definitely going be one of our to go to restaurants that delivers elevated food at a realistic price.

We went to chapters for the first time a couple of weeks ago for breakfast when we visited the Edgbaston market. We saw that they were doing lobster as a special until the beginning of September, as we are shellfish lovers we booked & went this evening, Saturday 26th Aug. The host that greets you when you arrive is very welcoming & friendly but the reason why we have only given four stars is because of the restaurant staff. They are emotionless & made us feel rushed. When we were first seated we were asked what we wanted to drink when we didn’t even have a drinks menu & on two occasions we had tell two different waitresses that we wanted a bit of time after bread & olives before ordering our meal, it would make more sense to have one Waitrose allocated to your table so they didn’t repeat themselves. That aside we had a lovely evening & throughly enjoy the lobster, it tasted fresh & sweet, there was lots of garlic to dip fries into. It was a very good price & would highly recommend, although get quick as it’s only on the menu until next week.

What a hidden gem!! Came here for our wedding anniversary and was not disappointed. The food was amazing and we have eaten at some Michelin star places. It was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection! Our waiter was friendly, helpful and joined in with our banter. The bartender and the Maitre d also helped to make our night as enjoyable as possible. It really was a lovely evening.

Went during “Birmingham food festival” with a group of friends who are all old enough to remember what proper service should be like. Our meal was chaotic - waitresses who had no idea of customer service, forgotten orders, wrong items brought, long, long wait for our main courses (my husband, who has Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes, had to take glucose tablets while waiting, to avert a low blood sugar event). The restaurant was busy on a Friday evening, but the gaggle of young waitresses stood chatting instead of watching and attending to their customers. When asked about the long wait for a glass of wine, we were told that the bar staff were “busy mixing cocktails”. Our wild mushroom risotto contained very few mushrooms, and was like sloppy rice pudding in texture (i.e. no “bite”). Friends who had cod with a sort of buttery sauce said it was tasteless. The only redeeming feature was a young black guy who without being asked very kindly took my coat and made sure l was OK on a set of steps. He seemed the only staff member who was observant and properly trained (sorry l didn’t ask his name).

Wasn’t impressed with the interior. Was sat next to waiters and they were stood over us the whole time. We’re not friendly and one waitress was very emotionless. Food was not great. (Quite literally was given tomatoes and cheese dip for my starter). Do not recommend. Would not go again.

Not brilliant. Overpopulated by late teenage staff with little or no experience who from time to time stopped working and started chatting to each other in the corner of the room. We noticed one older guy who we spoke to who was thoroughly professional (I think his name was Tom) but unfortunately he wasn't serving our table. The food was quite good but we were being served by 4 different people who were not communicating between them. The one member of staff had little knowledge of the evenings dishes. The menus were on folded pieces of paper with some marks on by previous usage. I'm not going to list all the petty things but wanted to highlight the above. The venue is excellent but the staff need to slow down a peg or two and get trained a lot more. It's not a cafe where we can giggle and have fun, it's a £100+ a head fine dining restaurant which requires professional waiting staff.

A really lovely neighbourhood restaurant. The dining room was busy without feeling crowded or noisy. Food was excellent with incredibly efficient service. Highly recommend the scallops and pork belly. Definitely worth a visit.

What a fabulous Sunday lunch absolutely delicious. My partner had beef which he said was cooked perfectly. I as a vegetarian was delighted with my blue cheese and broccoli pie with all the Sunday veg and trimmings including my own vegetarian gravy. Such a treat as i normally get palmed off with a pasta option. The very cheesey cauliflower cheese is also worth a mention. Our second visit and definitely not out last. Best Sunday lunch we have had. Great staff and service too.

I’ve been to chapter a few times, then I looked on TripAdvisor to see the ratings and they don’t have too many reviews, they deserve to. This place is a gem. We’re spoilt in brum with the likes of simpsons, prunells, lasan etc, and with Chapter being slightly outside of the centre, these guys aren’t getting the credit they deserve. I’m a foodie, so I LOVE the open kitchen you can see from the bar, where you watch the chefs take pride in their work and you can tell the produce is top notch. Kitchen is always spotless, I’d happily eat my dinner off the floor in there. Bar area is good, range of cocktails, friendly staff. Dining area is lovely. Good selection of wine etc, everything you need. The food is what’s best about this place. They nail every element of every course, every time. I went for a business lunch once to a private event. Had a chicken dish which they served to every guest simultaneously, so you expect it to be awful. It was probably the best chicken dish I’ve ever eaten. A la carte is exactly the same. I’d describe this as a cooks restaurant. If you’re into good food done well, you’ll love it here. The skill of the chefs is as good as anywhere I’ve ever eaten and I’ve been lucky to eat as some nice places. Not everything needs to be served on dry ice on a bed of hermoginised tiger fur to be impressive. A plate of good quality food done well, with skilful chefs who care will win every time. Finally there’s value for money. It’s not cheap, but in terms of getting what you pay for, I’d rank it number one in Brum. Well done Chapter, keep doing what you do.
