Service was friendly and attentive but my score is down to the food. Paying £5.50 for a sandwich that looked like something you'd get in a meal deal from a supermarket. Two pieces of shop bought thin bread, a small amount of grated cheese and a teaspoon of chutney. Felt really poor value for money.

Decided to treat ourselves to coffee and cake. Rang bell, man came to door of cottage and looked at us as if he didn't why we were there. There was no smile, hello or welcome!! We ordered, paid by card and he said it didn't work as bad reception, he took card reader into cottage and tried again. Still didn't work!! We paid by cash, luckily (or unluckily) we had some as don't usually carry any. My sister checked her bank a few days later to find payment was made!! We paid £24 for 2 coffees and 2 pieces of cake!! Absolutely disgusted that we were conned!! Cake (carrot - absolutely delicious) and coffee arrived in cardboard which wasn't a problem, except wooden spoon to stir coffee shorter than cup and a wooden knife to eat cake, fork would have been appreciated!! After we left, we looked at reviews!! Shame we didn't do this 1st!! We would have afforded!! As many others before us have said "DON'T GO!!"

Really lovely setting, and the scones were delicious. We didn't drink our tea though as it was weak, watery and milky, really not to our taste. We would prefer to have a tea bag left in and be able to put our own milk in. It worked out a little pricey because you have to order the teas separately, and at £2.25 per tea, I would expect not to have to pour it away.

Loved the stop here in the middle of a long walk. The owners had their patrons best interests at heart by luring all the wasps to a little "feeding station" with jam or some other sweet treats, so they mostly stayed away from the outdoor tables. We had only a tea and a coffee, so can't comment in the food. It looked like a great tea menu with cream tea and loads of other tummy cakes, including gluten free and vegan. A delightful little outdoor space for tired legs. There is only 1 single toilet outside the main building, so could find a small queue.

Having read the Trip Advisor reviews of The Chantry only after our visit, it's clear the management don't read their reviews, or worse, don't care. This review could almost be a summary of all the other 1-3 star reviews as our group nearly achieved Bad Chantry Bingo. 1) The attitudeoif the female owner is terrible. A customer facing role is clearly not for her. 2) Portion sizes are poor when compared to competitors in the area. Two in our party asked for more cream with their scones and were told "That would cost extra". The original portion sizes were miserly at best. 3) Mrs. Chantry struggles with negative customer feedback. "Everyone gets the same portion size (not quite enough) .... no one has complained before (she's clearly unaware of Trip Advisor). After this exchange, one of our party suggested that 'never coming back' was an option. This was a red rag to her, and she came back for a (verbal) fight. Luckiky, this was diffused by some of the more diplomatic members of our party. 4) Comments about packaging are fair. Paper cups and cardboard boxes should be for takeaway only. Some nice crockery would improve the experience... or prices should be reduced to reflect this. Positives: Mr Chantry was obviously having a good day (maybe he hadn't spoken to his wife. He was clearly busy). The other staff were pleasant. The location is lovely. Summary: Unfortunately, The Chantry seems to be a profit maximisation operation, rather than being customer service based. We spoke to some other friends who have visited the area for generations, and they all have had bad experiences there (generally involving the owner's attitudes) and haven't returned. My experience is that I ordered and ice cream, it's difficult to go wrong with Styles, but when it arrived (when I was away from the table) it came with a warning. 'The cone needs to be held in a particular way, or it might break'. This advice wasn't passed onto me, and I was very impressed with the catch I made as the ice cream headed to the floor. My dog appreciated helping clean my ice cream covered hand (if not the dog ice cream I bought her). The fact that the cone came with a warning about its poor quality, rather than The Chantry fixing the problem by shopping elsewhere for better supplies sums this place up. Mrs Chantry has to be seen to be believed, but you won't come back.

The setting is beautiful, but having been on holiday and sampling many cream teas locally, I was disappointed with the quality after visiting with family. It was a busy, sunny day and we waiting over 30 mins to receive our cream tea and sandwiches. As many reviewers have already mentioned, these come in cardboard boxes/ cups. The scone was very dry and crumbly but was served with a huge quantity of clotted cream and good quality jam. Unfortunately, due to the nearby bins, there were a considerable amount of wasps hanging around too which didn’t help with our enjoyment of the experience. The sandwiches were tasty but pricey since the they did not come with any garnish/ salad etc (£1 extra for a bag of crisps). The hot drinks just didn’t taste as good in cardboard cups- they were incredibly hot to touch too. Lovely setting, but let down by the “takeaway” feel.

I have been visiting The Chantry for 25 years and the appeal of home baking in an alfresco setting has always been an absolute joy. However, I am old school in liking linen on a restaurant table and full crockery in a cafe. Covid understandably forced a shift to disposable items but I take the opposite view to Michael T, as I feel that the permanent use of packaging diminishes the experience. Having recycling bins, that were previously unnecessary, is just virtue signalling and a cop out from washing up.

We were a group of senior women on a walk around Kilve. We were warned by group leader that this place was ‘ not up to much’ but when I saw the setting I was entranced by the informal garden set around the ancient walls ( albeit held together by almost as ancient scaffolding) with birds flittering back and forth to the feeders. However although my coffee at the beginning of our walk was in a paper takeaway cup, it was good coffee. At the end of the walk we all sat at a large garden table and placed our orders. All the food was excellent ! However the lack of cutlery, napkins and crockery along with, again, paper cups was so disappointing, and diminished the quality of the food. I see from previous reviews that the lack of crockery and cutlery was introduced during the covid period. I am very sorry to see that this practice has continued, and would urge the owners - pleasant and accommodating as they were- to seek to reintroduce these elements of visiting and eating in such a lovely setting.

This used to be the best place in the area for a cream tea but it has sadly gone downhill. They now use disposable cups and plates for everything, which takes a lot of the charm away (and generates a lot of waste). The scone was dry and crumbly. I had seen signs locally indicating a tearoom that offered cream teas by Kilve beach. On arrival we were surprised to find it was just a house serving drinks and food in their back garden. Although pretty, in a old cottage style garden style, it was looking tatty and rundown. There was a couple of tables in a small outhouse if it was rainy. You have to queue at the back door to have your order taken. The chap taking orders was also running around the garden like an athlete. I ordered 2 cream teas and a apple juice with a brownie. The cream tea arrived with no tea..... At no point we were told the cream tea didn't exist. It was scones with cream and jam, tea not included!! The man who took my order told me he should have let me know the cream tea didn't come with tea. Apparently not many people want cream teas, they just want scones! Tea was available. At an extra cost. Everything is served on paper plates and in paper cups. Which is understandable, as it was very busy and washing up on top of serving everyone would be impossible for a couple of people. The scones and brownie were absolutely delicious. Light fluffy and very tasty. There is a toilet for customers and free parking too.

We stopped in after visiting Kilve beach, lots of choice on the menu and a lovely setting, tumbledown church undergoing renovations. Lots of flowers and birds and seating under umbrellas ( it was super hot!) Icecream was delicious my only negative was tea served in...

Delightful, selection of sandwiches including gf bread and alternative milks, friendly service set in the grounds of a ruined Chantry. Slightly odd is everything is served in cardboard boxes and paper cups, there are recycling bins for everything though

On entering we were ignored by the owner who was chatting to other customers. Lovely natural gardens, tasty food. Disappointingly served in cardboard boxes and paper cups. Not what I would expect from a cream tea experience. Very overpriced and to top it all they expect you to tidy away after you. Such a shame!!

Driving along on the main road we see a sign for cream tea, how lovely, visions of teapots and China plates. We walk into what seems like a private garden with seats and tables and we order at a table which looks to be at the back door of a house. The menu did not say cream tea it was a "build your own" where you order the scones and then your drink. I look at other customers and they had paper cups so went to ask for mine in a teapot and a China cup please. The answer I got from the man was "not nowadays" I pointed out to him that we were not longer in covid and he shrugged his shoulders. Out comes a young lady with 2 takeaway brown cups and a brown cardboard box with 2 scones, cream and jam inside with a thin wooden knife. My friend and I were having a scone each so I asked fir plates, the girl said they have paper plates but not China, she came back with one so I had to ask for another there was also only one teaspoon, by this time it felt hard work. I got up and went to the ordering point again, out came an older lady and I relayed my frustration at the lack of China and even a plate in the first instance. She came back at me saying she had smashed her arm, holding it up to show me which appeared to look OK, but followed that she could not carry the trays, I reminded her that a young lady was doing this. She told me that when she changed to "cardboard ware" that customers said they preferred this but judging by other reviews on here, they too were disappointed. We had all the takeaway stuff in covid, it doesn't need to continue, it's wasteful and just lazy. I saw another lady go up to order quiche and asked the older man if it came with salad, his reply "not nowadays" I think this is his standard reply which actually means "we can't be bothered to make the effort" This is basically a takeaway service that allows you to sit in their garden. Disappointing.

Had a yummy afternoon tea of tea, scones, jam and clotted cream. Small family run concern. Friendly staff and quaint garden location in the ruins of a chantry.

A sad decline in a once near-perfect afternoon tea experience. Gone are the teapots and china plates. Instead the owners seem to have reinvented themselves as a motorway services type experience complete with cardboard cups and boxes for the scones. We were not convinced that the thinner than usual cream was clotted rather than whipped double. The scones were still nice - hence two stars. But all in all a big disappointment and we were not surprised that the gardens had many empty tables. Until the Chantry rediscovers its soul, we will not be back. :(

Very disappointing. Used to love this place but cannot understand why they are continuing to use cardboard cups and a cardboard box for your scones post Covid. It’s just not the same experience. Won’t be going back.
