We really liked Chale Green Stores and it's fabulous café - but it's closed! I guess there are just not enough people actually living locally all year to make it viable - but we're really surprised, as it always seemed so lively and so community-focused, as well as great for us visitors. This is a great loss, and I hope it can be revived.

We popped in to get some snacks to take with us to our guest house . Unfortunately it was late in the afternoon , so we were limited to buying biscuits. I don't think they carry a lot of choice as the village is so small , but it is the only one for miles .

After reading the good reviews made a detour from the coastal path to find the cafe is closed. Didn’t fancy a Mars Bar from the shop for lunch so continued on to the White Mouse Inn which was great for beer and late lunch.

Lovely store with helpful & friendly staff. We popped in on the way to our accommodation which we were having Sat-Nav issues finding, the staff did there best to assist us, a local gentleman popped in & they knew him by name & knew he would be able to assist us - which he did. Unfortunately the Cafe & Deli are no longer there, but the shop sells everything we wanted /needed during our stay, including local island fresh produce. They even baked some extra rolls for us & put them aside for me to collect & still supply the locals so nobody went without.I would have no hesitation in using this store again or recommending them to anyone who stays nearby. On different nights of the week a different mobile takeaway service is available be it wood fired pizza or fish & chips + many others. They open around 10-11hrs a day (Sundays are slightly shorter)

We had a poor experience here some time ago but that did not stop us from coming again. Have been coming on my own for coffee and toast (great toast really thick and tasty). This time I brought wifey for lunch, I had Lasagne that was very good, served with saute potatoes which made a nice change and a lovely dressed salad. Wifey is gluten free and had a sandwich, sounds boring but was very good. Was too stuffed to try the tempting cakes.......will have to go back!

Called into Chale Green Stores to pick up some lunch from the Deli & Cafe which is at the back of the Store/Post Office. Greeted by a very friendly and helpful member of staff who explained the price of takeaway food is £2 cheaper than listed on the Cafe menu. There was a good choice of sandwiches or baguettes, quiche, scotch eggs, savoury tarts and sausage rolls. We chose sausage rolls (delicious)which were heated up by the Chef in the kitchen, a scotch egg (huge with runny yoke) and slice of quiche (not heated and a bit lacking in flavour). The latte coffee was delicious. There was also a selection of cakes available. The small cafe overlooks a garden and I noticed a plaque on the wall saying it had been officially opened by Alan Titchmarsh.Well worth a visit. Good parking at front of Store.

We've been promising ourselves a visit to Chale Green Stores for several years and a local walk presented the ideal opportunity. The Eatery has quite a simple menu with most of the specials on display but the food is excellent - freshly prepared and attractively presented. Added to this are friendly, helpful staff and locally bottled ales making a complete package.

It was 3.45 but the staff were very happy to serve us and were efficient and polite. The food,of which there was a huge and varied selection, was beautifully presented, fresh and made to order. Cutlery and crockery were clean and the cafe vibe was cosy. In good weather there is also an option to sit outside. All in all a great experience.

Went back yesterday and there seemed to be almost no cake on offer at ten thirty on a Sunday morning in August? Decided to have the only scone on offer, which was a mistake, it arrived red hot on the out side and doughy in the middle, been shoved tin the microwave I would guess. Had a quiet word with the waitress and got a grudging apology, no refund or replacement offered. Can only assume something has gone wrong in the kitchen? We will try it again some time in the future.

Excellent and efficient customer service, with a friendly chat and a smile, our delicious snack-meal was brought out in record time. As someone who has had difficulty finding good food served on the Isle of Wight, I was overjoyed to have encountered the modestly named Chale Green Stores in a relatively quiet village off the main coast road. I wrote ahead of time to say that about eight of us would be coming from the mainland, and to our great surprise a table had already been set up for us. The lunch platters (e.g. croque monsieur or madame with french fries and salads, various Italian "specials" were delicious; the orange polenta cake and chocolate brownies (both gluten-free) were divine. Everything is home-made, too. The proprietress was the friendliest restaurateur that I have encountered in a very long time; you get the impression that the owners simply love to make their customers feel happy. Lovely garden, too, and Chale Green itself is surrounded by spectacular scenery. We shall definitely return there the next time we are on the island.

They do sell a lovely range of cold meats, cheeses, fresh local fruit/veg and homemade cakes. There is a wide selection of Island produce too like soaps and chutneys, so it's worth a definitely visit if you are passing by. I really liked the layout; it's clean, fresh and welcoming. They also do many reduced items such as fresh chicken and bread if you get there a hour or so before closing. Open from 7am-8pm, so great opening hours 7 days a week. I live not far away so visit quite often. I had an excellent curry and cake on sunday. They NOW have a chef in at weekends but not in the week yet alas. Since my last review the previous owner got rid of the chef and run the shop, deli and café down. The new owners are doing their best to build it up again and expand the range. Hopefully that will explain some of the anomolies in the earlier reviews. They told me that are hoping to have a daily chef and have a larger menu sometime next year, cant wait! Also, although they've had to cut back on the fresh deli for the time being, they now have a lot of local preserves, arts and crafts etc. You are all right about the staff, and the new owners, they are all very nice to deal with.

We made a small detour to eat lunch and see why people were talking about this deli and cafe but were very disappointed. There seemed to be little on the cafe menu at lunchtime and our sandwiches were poor to average at best.. You would be better off with M&S ones at half the price. Nice setting by the way but why they bought outside tables with no umbrellas to shade the sun is beyond me. As a result no one was outside on one of the sunniest days of the year! Coffee was good but why it took 10 minutes and five members of staff to make it is a mystery.Oh yes, the deli is a joke.. a few tired stuffed peppers and olives swimming in large bowls, some shrink wrapped cheese and a few vacuum-packed and over-priced meats. Very disappointing.

I've not yet seen any of the problems that the previous reviewers documented, I suspect they were transitional as the ownership has changed recently. I would suggest coming back and giving it another try. I have noticed that the range has been gradually expanding over time. As well as more specials the fresh orange juice and ciabatta bread that i like have recently been introduced. A pleasant place but could have been cleaner. We ordered "soup of the day" only to discover that it was tinned tomato soup - and tepid at that. The bread served with it was only sliced bread and was dry and old. At £5.95 this was poor value for money and does not reflect well on the new chef.

I went to the cafe last year and was so impressed I took my parents back there this week for lunch. I wish I hadn't. The cafe didn't appear open at first - eventually some staff appeared. They had changed the menu and only had ONE, literally, so as soon as we had decided what we wanted it was whisked away from us to give to some other customers who arrived after us. The staff didn't know what was on the menu and had to read it to find out - I even had to tell them what came with the pate! They weren't sure if they had any and went to the fridge to see...they came back with package but didn't know what it was, so suggested I might like to choose some pate from the shop fridge. When my plate arrived the toast had been burnt and then scraped, with the burnt side of the toast face down, as if I wouldn't be able to tell!! The cutlery was dirty and when we asked for a replacement no apology was made. My parents both chose to have a jacket potato - the menu said to ask for fillings. I asked and the staff didn't know what they could offer, eventually saying "tell us what you would like". Admittedly, the prawn mayo jackets my parents chose tasted good and had plenty of prawns, but the salad that came with both the jacket potatoes and my pate was sadly lacking - a few bits of lettuce, some red onion and a slice of beetroot.... When it came to paying I was overcharged by 5p for my pate - they couldn't even get the charging right. I couldn't be bothered to comment. Sadly I won't be returning.

Don't be put off by the fact that it appears to be a Londis general store from the outside - there's a lovely deli-style cafe at the back with nice views and an outdoor patio eating area (for days when there isn't a gale blowing across the island!).My wife had Asparagus soup which she said was the best she'd ever tasted, while I had a Cheese platter (it would have been called a Ploughman's lunch anywhere else!). Cakes were irresistible too.

Popped in for a paper and stayed for Sunday Lunch. A £25 deal of 2 x Roast Dinners + 2 x Desserts plus A BOTTLE of wine. That equals £2 for the wine! Only a mug would say no!The roast lamb was superb being local IOW meat, six wonderfully cooked local veg plus 2 types of potatoes. Seriously good mint sauce and WOW it was wonderful. Now the business of desserts - stand by to blow your socks off! They were top top quality of chocolate mousse with fresh cream and strawberries dipped in chocolate. My guest said "best I have had" and believe me that is a serious complement. Washed down with Pinot Grigio. Service was very prompt and with big smiles, the chef in the background waved a few times and the locals chatted to everyone. So the grub was tops but then so is the stunning views from the restaurant. Now if it were hot we would have dined outside on the patio where it looked welcoming but as this was mid June it wa raining!!Look this is better than any pub, super quality and bang on price. Off you go and feed yourself they have a big selection of super food at a really good price.Toilets are new too and wonderfully clean. We could not fault The Chale Cafe & Deli at that level.

What looked like a normal village shop was indeed a very friendly shop with a fabulous restaurant and Deli at the back. Their own homemade rolls and sandwiches were absolutely delicious and very good value

Visited Chale Green Stores and Deli with my mother. The Deli and Cafe are at the back of the village stores, which stocks an impressive array of foods and wines, including many locally sourced products.- including IW cheeses. The cafe is bright and modern, with an outside patio garden. There are fantastic countryside views through the huge patio doors. Food consists of a simple Mediterranean inspired menu and a specials board ( Todays was local Sausage and mash). We shared the bread dips, Lemon olive, oil, garlic olive oil and balsamic vinegar served with tasty rustic bread. Then my mother had Broccoli and Stilton soup with a very freshly baked roll, I had the gourmet burger, both were tasty, filling and beautifully presented. For desserts we had Sticky Toffee pudding and Pavlova, again the presentation was as good as any top restaurant.... and they both tasted heavenly !!I'm sure they get very busy in the summer season, so it might be advisable to book.

This place is famous for its views across the Solent, but only in the summer. In the winter the windows are always steamed up giving you near to no visibility outside. We didn’t eat but the menu looks good and average prices for the area. Drinks were more expensive than the Seaview Hotel just around the corner. +£1 per drink on gin & tonic. It was November on a Friday evening and all tables were reserved. We did sit at one of their best tables for our drink ‘Captain Ted’s Table’ and it was wobbly as hell. Felt like it was going to give way at any time. Come on this is an easy fix.

Nice busy cafe, lots going on with a lot of choice to make your own baguette. Popular with the locals for lunch who fancy an upgrade from a morrisons meal deal.

We have been here many times over the years and looked forward to our visit again this year. What a disappointment. We had a cream tea which consisted of a pot of tea, 2 scones, butter, cream and jam. The jam and cream pots were half the size they used to be and the butter was barely there, adequate enough for one scone but certainly not two. The jug of milk supplied did not have enough milk for one cup of tea and we had to ask for extra. I do not drink tea and asked for my tea to be substituted with coffee, big mistake, it was undrinkable. Went we went to pay we were told 'cash only' and I was lucky to find some cash in the bottom of my bag. This should be made clear when you enter and before you order as a lot of people do not carry cash. Our experience was so different to every other visit we wondered if there were 'new owners' but overheard the owner telling other visitors that she had been there 17 years. Sadly will not be returning.

Remember coming to this pub with my family when I was ten so had to come back 40 odd years later. Disappointed the coffin by the door was gone 😂 but it was a real highlight of our trip. Our dogs were welcomed and fussed over and the food at lunch was amazing, so tasty. Really friendly staff and all the facilities were spotless. Fantastic views over the garden too. A lovely trip down memory lane
