Central Cafe in Carmarthenshire

Fine cafe and chippy that's handy for cattle mart and football. Large fish cooked fresh so you will wait chips crispy and plenty of. Toilets are small and floor was either greasy or not mopped properly.

Well what can I say apart from terrible food .we used to luv this place for dinner but it was always so busy .but today when I went past it was empty so I thought I'd pop in for gravy and chips and what a mistake that was the chips were so hard and stail even the watery gravy didn't soften them up absolutely disgusting if your down on holiday or even live here avoid this place they now have no pride in the food they serve .

Stopped here for food as passing by, what i wanted wasn't available so I had cottage pie and chips and my wife had sausage in batter and chips. Upside was it has dog friendly tables outside. Downside is very expensive £15 for the above with a coffee. Chips were greasy and far too large portions and cottage pie was reheated and cold in the middle possibly a microwave job. I don't get places like these, I could have bought a cottage pie at the premier and microwaved it. All they have to do is prepare something of decent quality for its customers to enjoy but short cuts and high prices come first. If I wasn't so hungry it would have gone in the bin.

Stopped for lunch, bite to eat before onward travel. Friendly staff, good menu. Chips not great, a mix of textures ranging from crisp to flabby and unpleasant. Found myself picking through the offering to find the edible ones. Sausage was cold and extremely dry- sat potentially on the hot plate for some time. Where I really had my backside spanked was £1.50 for a can of Diet Coke. Diet drinks are meant to be exempt from sugar tax! Didn’t finish meal. On plus side, using paper bags over plastic or polystyrene bumped score up from 2 to 3. Lots of room for improvement.

Absolutely fantastic chippy - huge portions of hand cut chips and cod bites beautifully cooked and piping hot. If you’re in this area then we’ll worth a visit - loads of items on the menu too👍

I just cannot get to grips with this place. Maybe it's the weird ways they have of you ordering and them not moving until you have paid; then you wait and wait. The food isn't bad and the fishcakes are superb but it is just not a place in which you can relax. Strange.

To summarise not a pleasant experience. Not knowing the area and passing by in the car the thought of fish and chips seemed quite inviting. The wait to be served took for ages with a crowd of people waiting for their order to be cooked. Thinking this could be a good sign how wrong could I be! The chips were just about the worst I have ever had served in a fish and chip shop and must have been triple cooked as they were so inedible. The fish was not much better with too much batter and was rather dry. The menu is quite extensive; perhaps they should cut down on the choice and concentrate on serving just a few edible items. Avoid at all costs if possible

Very nice, well catered for the huge amount of customers they had. Will go back on my next visit soon.

Had take-away sausage and chips + curry sauce. Nice clean fish and chip shop with a one way system that works well. Service = Fast and friendly. Good porton of sausage and chips served in a good sized bag. Nice and hot and stayed that way in my insulated carrier until I reached home. Really nice food and the chips , just as they should be, delicious.

We had sausage in batter and chips with curry sauce and it was absolutely delicious. The batter was crispy and the chips were some of the best we had had for a long time. Highly recommended

We stopped in Newcastle Emlyn on our way home from Newquay as we wanted a breakfast. There were lots of little cafes, so we asked some local people which one was the best. They recommended this one, and they weren't wrong. Excellent breakfast- cooked from fresh, served nice and hot, very generous portions. Set us up perfectly for the trip home!

There is only one good asset to this chip shop. And that is the blond thin lady who cooks some days. Her fish and chips are spot on. As for the rest of you avoid at all costs if the lady isn’t cooking. The man is rude and hasn’t got a clue how to cook his fish and chips are far to over cooked. You would need a new set of teeth if you try and eat them. AND the older blond lady in the cafe is disgustingly rude as well she has no customer service skills what’s so ever.

It wasn't very nice at all, this place has really let itself go over the years. King rib burger...... Literally a king rib slapped in a bun, everything over done, me the Mrs and my 3 year old all have bad stomachs and are stuck to the toilet an hour after eating here 💩

Came in for take away batterd rib and chips x2 on the 7/12/2019 The worst chips I have ever had over cooked awful. The rib was very greasy. Chippy lol think you really should consider employing staff that can cook properly. Avoid this chippy

We went there today as we fancied some chips we've been to early every chip shop in the area over the years but this is got to be the worst chips we have ever had, reheated and dried up, the only decent thing was the roll and butter we had with it

We called in at about 6.30pm. There is a Cafe at the back of the shop which wasn't open but we were able to use a couple of tables at the front. Our two adults and two children all declared the chips the best we had ever tasted. The staff were lovely and friendly - happy smiles behind the counter and we observed lots of other happy customers as we munched.

i recently reviewed the central , which i had found very disappointing, i decided to try again and i was pleasantly surprised by how it had improved. a lovely meal , chips were good and i love Wyns mushy peas . also impressed with the recyclable packaging . will be returning .

My wife normally checks on review sites any place that we are wishing to visit for food before we go and eat, this time she decided not to bother as “How hard can it be to cook chips??” Well, I am sure that this place will tell you that it is close to rocket science or even complex brain surgery.

Can't believe I have wasted money on these chips. Obviously reheated, and inedible. Very disappointed!! Never again

decided to have a takeaway meal here.1 fish and chips and 1 bag of chips around £10 the chips were hard and brown and the fish although cooked fresh was not crisp but soggy. edible but not very good...

Live local and have used central on the odd occasion as they usual are consistently good. I dont know if change of staff or change owner, but the staff were, not the usual i became used to seeing. Brought chicken pie and chips take away, price has increased since last time now £5.10 bit steep, never mind.

I decided to take my wife and two young children for a meal in this cafe. We had purchased a meal and paid over £20 for the food. My young children needed the toilets after the their meal, and we were not allowed to use them due to “cleaning” . I asked the young man if we could use them and he went to ask the older lady with short hair. He came and told us that they had be cleaned and they were closed! In my opinion this is absolutely unnecessary as the cafe states that it’s open meaning the toilets should be as well. Considering the time was around 5-6 O’clock in the evening. This was very inconvenient for my family and I therefore I thought it was necessary to complain. I will not return ever again after this!

Whilst staying locally with family we treated them all to fish and chips. They recommended this place and we were not disappointed.

worked late and decided to get a fish and chip supper ,, when i got it home it was still hot . but the fish was old and dry and the chips were not nice at all , in fact i couldnt eat it , the mushy peas were pale and bland . never again

we arrived in Emlyn on a cold blustery day in late september, and after a look around the antiques centre we needed a warm up. The sign in the window was advertising home made cawl and a breadbun for under two pounds, a bargain in anyone's eyes surely ? we were not disappointed in any way, lovely thick broth, soft vegetables with plenty of pearl barley ( my fave ) and a lovely smile from the fantastic staff, my wife said it should be called Oasis broth as you got a roll with it ! Nan struggled somewhat with her bread as she had brought the wrong teeth, she had put in her nice smile ones instead of her chewing ones, so entirely her own fault. we overcame the problem by dunking her roll in the cawl to soften it first so all was good in the end. highly recommended for a taste of the Wales in a cup.

I find the staff here rude. The oil needs changing as the chips have off oil taste and small portions. I won’t be going back

Being vegan my choices here are somewhat limited but their chips are heavenly! My son who does eat fish assures me it is the best in this part of Wales.

Had beautiful lunch no complaints at all service and food great . The staff went out of their way to be accomadating. Fish and chips was very tasty not greasy at all the same can be said for battered sausages, will definitely go again.

Been here a few times last visit very dissapointing with chips that were well past their sell by date and indeible so threw them away and had to knock up a jacket potatoe when i got in and sausages that were very poor even the dog was not fussed; will not use again.

Not great. Fish small, chips old & tired. It's ok for lunch but I'd rather pay a little bit more & go to Bunch or Paschas or Winnies.

We ate fish and chips from here about 12 months ago and they were possibly the worst we had ever eaten. We heard that they had improved so we gave it another try. What a transformation! Pleasantly surprised by the quality. Well done.

Decided to visit with wife and two small children 4 and 2 yr old ! ordered the 8 chicken nuggets, waited a while considering we were the only ones in the restaraunt . When food turned up only 6 chicken nuggets so I asked where's the other 2 (as 8 advertised on menu for £4.90) the waitress replied I will get the manager ! who stormed over and said in front on my 2 young children , we have changed to menu to 6 , that is an old menu ( not my problem you haven't updated your sticky old menus.) he said we have changed our range of nuggets to a better quality the others were "f***ing s**t" so you get less. We were horrified with the language in front of our young children ! so we ate out food and left , to be honest the food wasn't that bad just that attitude of the manager and his staff!

Very disappointed with the food from this cafe. The fish was greasy, the chips looked over cooked and had a burnt taste to them, and the sausages were bland. Perhaps we caught a bad day but we won’t be visiting again to find out. Definitely wouldn’t recommend.

This place is under new management and I must say the food has been majorly improved! Chips and rissoles are lovely! Food looks and tastes more appealing!

Once again this establishment is under new management but finally someone has vastly improved the service and food! Now served in boxes the fish & chips stay fresh and don't become a soggy sweaty mess wrapped in polystyrene trays. Well done. Will be back for more.

Horario limitado y bastante horrible personal que apenas se molestó en servir, de hecho, aparecen lobotomised. Supone que estará abierto hasta las 7 pm pero cierra las puertas por 6. 45:00 a pesar de tener un montón de armario climatizado comida que puedes ver. Las patatas fritas crujientes, pero solía ser bastante pesado, y ahora pálido enganchado. Lovely food, I also think that the prices are reasonable too, had a few crispy bits in the with the chips which I also like. This place is always busy and I've always had to wait for my food which doesn't bother me as it's cooked fresh to order and it's well worth the wait, never found the food to be greasy either.

Due to working in Newcastle Emlyn, my treat is a chippy lunch from here on a Friday. It is always busy, plenty to choose from a d good food. Can become a tad pricey if buying for a family, but the food is worth it after all.

We had a grand get together of close family and friends, and as no one take away could be decided some of the meal was an Indian, some was Chinese and some poor people decided to get fish and chips, and this is where we got them. Oh dear. Dim dingy interior, a couple of characters straight out of "Deliverance" leaning on the counter. Staff very friendly and helpful, but the fish was excessively oily and the chips were frankly horrible. Tasted re-heated, were over cooked and mostly stuck together. Don't think we'll give this one a go again.

Newcastle Emlyn town, the market town, but farming locally has, I guess changed over the years. We used to come here for family holidays 35/40 years ago, renting a cottage locally, visiting the livestock market and especially joining the queues of people trying to get lunch at this amazing fish and chip shop, now cafe too.A shadow of it's past sadly but the beautiful countryside doesn't seem to change, nor the happy helpful people.Anyway, the fish and chips here too haven't changed, still excellent ( takeaway but a cafe too ) and great value for money.Go there if you can

Yet again the chips were soggy tasted sweet warmed up mush I have been regular but not any more given the benefit of the dought to many times .Staff are great but the quality of food is dreadful Try cooking fresh chips around the 5ish mark and not warming up lunch times

Had sausage and chips to take away and I have never had such disgusting chips in my life! half of them were like mash, and discoloured, greyish in colour. will never go there again.

Whilst stayind nearby, I went for fish, chips and mushy peas for the four of us. The fish was the kind you get from the frozen cabinet in a supermarket, the chips were tasty but all about an inch long. Mushy peas, oh yes, very mushy, pea soup more like. Sorry, but it was the worst fish and chips I've had in a long time. I haven't revisited, so hopefully (by the look of other reviews) they have sorted themselves out.

Very nice chips. My partner and I between us had veggie burger and chips, and chicken curry and chips. Both meals were very tasty, and we sat at one of the provided tables indoors.

As the title says our experience was pretty awful. The chips and fish tasted fatty almost like they had been left cold and recooked. The mushy peas were barely warm and had strange white bits in them. Not a good experience I am afraid.

my mum went into central cafe yesterday 9/4/16 to get chips for one of the old ladies she looks after and the chips were delicious cooked perfectly and tasted lovely

tonight 11/3/16 the chips were terrible you pick up one chip and ten bits are stuck to it the after taste of the fat left a really bad after taste in your mouth, obviously they had been kept warm since lunch time (it was 17.25) not good will go elsewhere lost a long term customer. This has been ongoing for quite a long time now

Used to go here often about 15 years ago, was passing today and decided to give it a go (takeaway), wish I had driven straight passed to keep my memories of the place as they were. Chips were limp and dark, chicken was hard around the edges, what was edible was dry. Service was slow and staff were confused which food was for who. If they talked less amongst each other it would help. I don't like giving low scores so very lucky to get 3/5. Will not be calling here any time soon, my memories have been shattered.

I have stopped going to this cafe over two years ago. Yesterday evening my son who has not long returned from abroad said on going through Newcastle Emlyn he would like a jacket potato. I stopped at the above cafe for him to get one I never mentioned to him that I did not go there. After he received his food and came back to the car. He said I am actually sorry that I waited for this food. The staff in there are awful no one said good evening or hello they were talking amongst themselves ignoring the customers ( not only him). Their whole attitude is rude. The food was ok nothing to make you want to go back for anything more from there and for a chip shop heavily priced and not great. I work in the public sector on retail and in offices and if my attitude was as theirs I would not expect continued support from my locals. I appreciate that it costs to run a business but it would help if you had tidy staff.

We ate here last night, the chips were lovely, but I was eating in with my three year old daughter who needed to use the toilet half way through the meal. There was a sign saying that the toilets were closed, and when I asked about it I was told that we could not use the toilet because they had only just mopped it. I was forced to carry my daughter first to the market toilets to find them closed, and in the end we had to use the toilet in the pub next door. It was very nearly an embarrassing accident, and you would have thought that the staff would have been more understanding of the situation. Very disappointed.

Our intention was to grab a quick lunch, which turned out to be a very good decision. Our rissole, sausage and exellent chips were stuffed down in record time. Understandably, if we had chosen the fish, there would have been a wait as these items are cooked to order. If only other establishments could cook their chips as good as the Central!

this is a good old fashioned chip shop. Good quality food and really good chips. Easy to park in main car park and walk over..... Eat in or out

We used the Central Café as we weren't hungry enough for a full restaurant type meal. You can have anything from a portion of chips to a proper meal so it suited our not very hungry frame of mind.

We found this café two years ago. This year we actually went out of our way to visit for breakfast after leaving our holiday cottage on our way home. The breakfast was super and one of the best we've had anywhere. The value of the food was incredible ( tw0 eggs, two sausages, two slices of locally produced thick bacon, tomato. beans. choice of hash browns or saute potatoes toast and tea/coffee for only £4.79) I liked the fact that this is the only place I've seen with glass coasters set into a wooden table top. The chairs had a matching design. A definite must if you've spent time packing the car and cleaning up and leaving by 10 a.m. and feeling very hungry. We both feel this café deserves recognition for the helpful staff and excellent breakfast. A super way to finish a holiday.

Had not been here since my last review, but had heard that it had changed owners and that the food was good. Went for a take-away just after 11a.m on a Saturday morning. Early I know, but they were open, so called in on my way home. Ordered three portions of chips, a sausage, rissole and fish. The accompaniments were fine, but the chips, inedible. Dry and tasteless. Had I not been in a rush to go somewhere, then I would have driven all the way back to complain. Should I have been in later then maybe the chips would have been fresher. I just hope that what I was served was not the night before's reheated leftovers. I don't like to be negative about a local business, but have to be honest. I shall not be returning.

Stopped here on a return journey from a weekend away. Wanted something warm and quick so popped in here and so glad we did. Chips were like the old days! Crispy outside fluffy inside...and the homemade rissoles were delicious, nothing like the processed salty rissoles you get in other chip shops - looked much healthier and tasted much better.really friendly staff too. Children enjoyed too.

They make the best rissoles I've ever tasted...I've recommended them to all my friends and they are all hooked...!Will be there again in April 2015.

Love the chips here, the fish is always tasty and the batter light. Good value for money and a great selection of items on the menue.

The chips from this cafe are the best I have ever had! I visit whenever im passing as I just cant resist them.. I live aproximately 30 miles from Newcastle Emlyn and on many occasions, my partner and I have made a special trip here because the chips are just amazing! They are always golden, crisp on the outside and fluffy and delicious on the inside. I dont know what their secret is but theyve definitely got it right. Ive never been disappointed yet :) oh and the staff are happy and friendly too Awesome :)

We bought (takeaway) two standard cod, one large and small chips including a curry sauce. The cost was over £12. The Fish was poorly cooked dripping with oil and the chips were soggy. When we collected our order, I was shocked to discover that our food was stacked next to the till (counter) not warmed!! Extremely disappointing and worrying as a result we binned our takeaway!!

Called for a takeaway. The staff were very friendly. Great home made savoury rissoles - a must if you are in the area.

Called in for something to eat over lunchtime when traveling in the Cardigan area with the family,and remembered my workmates telling me of the best chippy in the Cardigan location.I can understand why many people travel some distance for the best rissoles and chips,with friendly staff to serve with a smile to brighten up a wet windy day.

I reviewed this place in March 2011 and was impressed by the quality of the fish.We have eaten regularly here since then and the quality of the fish has recently gone down, to the point where I will no longer eat here.

We visit this café whenever we are in the area, which is quite often between March and October. We have visited with family and friends and can say we have NEVER been disappointed. The quality of food and service is first class. The 'girls' are always extremely helpful and friendly. We eat at several restaurants but if you want a true British café meal look no further for quality and value for money. What more can we say but thoroughly recommended.

We placed our order for a large portion of chips, only to find we had been given a portion smaller than you would get had I ordered a cone....... Extremely disappointing And certainly terribly NOT Value for money what's so ever ......

I first reviewed Central Cafe in January 2012, and gave it a glowing report. Unfortunatly, my opinion has changed since then. I don't know if ownership has changed, but something certainly has, and not for the better. I used to rate the fish as the best for miles, but now it is full of bones and has turned me off eating fish completely. I enjoy their rissole, but that alone is not enough to keep my custom. I now travel a 30 mile round journey for decent fish and chips at Pendre Cafe in Cardigan.

Very nice food and friendly service.They even made a small piece of fish especially for our daughter.

One of the best Fish and Chip Cafes in the area. Comes a very close second to The Cardigan Arms, College Row, Cardigan.

This is a very well run fish and chip shop! The chips are good and the burger is also good, but the burger is a bit dry and not enough cheese in a cheeseburger. The staff were good and were very polite. I will recommend this cafe to my friends and family, and I will return very soon.

I have not had a sit down meal here but have had chips to take out on numerous occassions. I am fussy when it comes to fish and very dubious about ordering it elsewhere, but the fish you get from Central is first class. The batter is crispy but not greasy and you will find no trace of a bone or skin. The chips are also lovely-no hard bits! There is a chip shop closer to us but we never hesitate to drive past and travel the extra mileage to Central. Never had a bad take-away from here-no matter what we've ordered.

Having driven for 3 hours, the wife and I stopped for a portion of chipsa and curry sauce at the Central Cafe, both were gorgeous and deserve 10/10 rating.

Tried an eat-in meal with friends one Friday lunchtime.Had battered cod, chips, peas, tea, bread and butter.This was good, but worth a special mention was the fish: solid, white , tasty fresh fish of a standard rare nowadays.The fish certainly knocks spots off the beer-battered cod you get served in the town's hotel, which I have also tried.Don't know how consistent this cafe is - but I will be returning.They also do a pensioners deal.
