Previously known as Cellar Gascon. Not sure why they changed its name but c'est la vie. I love this place - been coming for over 20 years. Amazing wine menu - some real treats for the cognoscenti, at very reasonably pricing. Staff are very friendly too.

As the name suggests, from the décor to the menu Le Bar Club Gascon is very French and as fans of French bistros we felt very much at home. While there is some interaction with the restaurant kitchen, food is cooked in a tiny kitchen area behind the bar – we were fascinated by just how efficient the two chefs had to be. The menus, too have a sense of fun: Starters include Piggy Treats' – a very generous plate of saucisson sec, saucisse seche, dry-cured Bayonne ham, pork pate, chorizo, guindillas, Foie Gras & Truffle Burger or Marmite Royale & soldiers. Mains are very French, too, including Traditional Cassoulet Toulousain, Duck Confit and fries or Cuttle Fish Basquaise, Courgette & Sea Aster. It was a great atmosphere and a lovely experience – we ended staying for much longer than anticipated.

Tops for food, service and value. £40 including four courses and four wines. Our set meal consisted of squid, foie gras, lamb casserole and pineapple with ice cream. The set meals change constantly, so next time we, and you, will eat something different. The brown bread (included) was good. We were offered more bread. Good service, very friendly and helpful.Coffee was extra - no chocolate nor sweetmeat with the coffee nor the bill. But the coffee was 'cheaper than Starbucks', said the one who ordered it.Toilets down steep stairs. Washbasin for midgets. No plug. On the plus side, amusing artwork.Any drawbacks? I hate bar stools and I slid off the narrow banquettes. Only the last wine seemed to really complement the food. but four free/included wines - I'm not complaining. No alternative to starter of squid. I managed to eat around it and give my squid to a companion. But great value, unusual dishes, fun. Highly recommended. This is why I save five stars for special food.

Eventually had to ask for the food menu.We all make mistakes- so may be excused for this - but it's an open service area, and to be polishing a glass and to sneeze loudly (and sorry to say, wetly) and THEN keep on cleaning, put the glass back on the rack and still use the same tea cloth, is completely unacceptable. We all sneeze and he may have sneezed sideways - but the waiter needs to understand to put cloth AND glass to one side and not serve again Food very good at the price but not going back

Having found this Smithfield wine bar by accident last year, I paid a second visit for an impromptu lunch with a business partner and found it just as good value as before. The express lunch menu is a plat du jour for £6, which was a really tasty chicken breast in a tomato and vegetable sauce, with optional courses of a starter or cheese for £3 each. The portions are not big but come with a basket of good bread and butter and the quality of the ingredients is comme il faut. The service is friendly and efficient. The wine list has many temptations. Having started with a budget-conscious glass of house wine for £3, I then took a risk and ordered us both a glass of Sauternes to go with our cheese without checking the price . As the Brillat Saverin came with honey, the Sauternes was a good match and I was pleased to discovered that what turned out to be Rieussec was a not too ruinous £7 a glass. The only negative is that the tables are very close together and so it's not somewhere to go for a confidential conversation but at the prices they charge, they can be forgiven for that.

We had an excellent lunch here. I chose several small plates such as the duck burger, and the croque Gascon, (a spring roll affair with a sublime a very generous Foie Gras centre) which were utterly delicious and swiftly dispatched, and my partner ordered the three course daily special which included a delicate but flavourful sea bream main. We shared the cheese selection and one of the three was an amazing Ossau Irate, cut in the form of a flower. This was an truly remarkable taste sensation, as the very fine 'petals of cheese' literally melted on the tongue. We accompanied the lunch with a very decent and pleasingly floral Rose Langlois and a couple of refreshingly hoppy and flavourful craft beers, 3 Weiss Monkeys was one. Our waitress was really charming and very helpful in explaining the rather involved culinary constructions, and all the staff were welcoming yet extremely professional and discreet. The ambience was relaxed but with a frisson of polite formality, as it befits its business lunch clientele. It was also extremely good value for the quality and service we received. Overall - a truly delightful experience which we would be happy to repeat.

Always worth a stop if you're near Covent Garden. Delicious freshly cooked treats and good coffee & hot chocolate. Perfect for a little pick me up.
