Cay Tre in Hackney

No smiles from the staff with poor quality food. My beef was fatty and the dish was very oily. The Pho was tasteless. The delivery drivers outside were impatient waiting for their orders which was distracting. All in all a very poor dining experience.

I loved this restaurant! My Bun Cha tasted exactly like in Hanoi and a lot of my Vietnamese friends recommended me the same. The staff was super nice - definitely going to come back!

This restaurant exceeded all expectations with its incredible Bún Chả Hà Nội. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. Especially, Yen, our server, was friendly and made me feel truly welcome.

Great Vietnamese food! They have more options than your average Vietnamese eatery. It's a bit fancier than most "home cooking" style places you'll find as well. Walked in for the decor and I did not regret this. ✨️ The manager Kin was very welcoming 🙏🏻

This was the first time I’d ever been here and everyone at the table said they would come back again. Food was amazing but the service surpassed anything we could have expected. Kin made every customer feel special and provided amazing food suggestions that were spot on. Everything tasted phenomenal (even the soft drinks). I’m already planning when I can go again and have already started telling my friends that work nearby about it. I can’t believe I didn’t eat here sooner.

It can be a bit noisy, but the food is fantastic. The Soho branch is great, too, but I prefer this location. I always choose to come here with friends when I want Vietnamese food. The atmosphere is lively, especially at dinner time, so if you enjoy that kind of vibe, you'll appreciate the unique experience of dining in Shoreditch. However, the manager does seem a bit on edge and tends to watch customers closely, but overall, it’s a great spot.

We literally stumbled along this restaurant, we asked a Uber driver where he would recommend to eat and her pointed out this gem. Very accommodating staff and amazing food.

Where do I start? It's all going downhill. Food prices have gone up to insane levels, while food quality has markedly gone down and is insanely salty and flavourless. We were given a menu with cheaper prices which apparently was a mistake. They were then swapped for a menu with more expensive prices. I asked for only 2 ice cubes in my drink to avoid a tasteless watered down drink but of course my request was completely ignored just so they could fill my glass with ice cubes of frozen tap water and charge a premium for that. What a scam. Tap water is also charged now. This used to be a nice place, but it's now a money scam. We paid over £80 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 drinks. The bill should have been no more than £45 for the low quality of the food, drinks and service. Avoid.

Nice place! The food was great and the prices are reasonable. We got our order quickly and enjoyed our time there.

The crab rolls were tasty. Fried chicken main however was a bit too greasy and dry unfortunately - I do feel we chose the wrong dishes for mains :(

Banh Xeo, Pho, Roll, etc. are all top quality. This Vietnamese restaurant is one of the places I definitely want to visit again. The meat is really good and the broth is really good.

Summer rolls were refreshing with a yummy sauce. The aubergine starter was a bit bland but it was good with the soy bean sauce available on the table. Coconut chicken curry was creamy and spicy. Pho wok noodles with beef was filling but could have had a bit more flavour. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and lively.

One of the worst place to order online as they giving really poor concern about delivery orders. Drivers have to wait long time to get order to their hands. If u r hungry I don’t recommend this for order online.

Great food, friendly servers and nice atmosphere! We had summer rolls, anchovied chicken wings and bun bo hue, and they were all great but chicken wings stole the show! They were so good I came back the following week to have them again along with papaya salad and they were 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 Will definitely be back again!

Chicken wings must ordered! Tasted good. Overall had a great meal as we enjoyed everything we ordered. Recommend to have one soup (pho) and one dry dish (Vermicelli spring bowl) to enjoy different flavours.

Came here as a walk in, hadn’t heard of it before. The vegan options were excellent, the service was quick. I recommend the aubergine and okra curry and the ramen noodles (both vegan). Start with the summer rolls! Delicious.

Came here for my birthday and my oh my what a delight. The food was amazinggggg so fresh and made with care and love . The service was great that I was more than happy for the service charge to be kept on. The manager Kin was fantastic and really attentive. Came here for dinner and we ordered the prawn summer rolls, beef wrapped in betel leaf, lemon grass pork bun cha and seafood pho. The flavours were good and the portions were generous. Definitely come back if I'm in the area again.

Very tasty vietnamese food! We went for a Saturday dinner without an earlier booking and we were quickly served. The mix seafood Cay Tre platter was great as a starter for 2 people. The fresh and nicely fried salt and pepper squid and pork imperial spring rolls were full of flavour. We ordered the Saigon pho and the special large combo pho. Both were great , the broth was super tasty and the meat nicely cooked. The large pho was actually quite large, mind you you might end up with some left overs. To note here we added another starter while waiting for the pho, as it took a little bit more time to arrive. We went for the beter leaf dumplings which were equally delicious and packed with minced meat and other delicacies. Will definitely visit again and try more of their dishes!

Had been ordered takeaways from this place last year and decided to visit the shop during Easter weekend. The broth and the beef in the Sagon Pho tasted much better than delivery. The dripped coffee was rich and had a good balance of sweet and bitter. The papaya salad with prawns had texture and flavor, however, I would prefer a bit spicy and salty rather than sweet chili which wasn't spicy enough. I also had the pork stew to take away. All in all, food is amazing if the spicy level can be a notch up and the tidyness of the toilet can be improved.

Came here because I was craving pho. Upon first sip, I was shocked at how sweet the soup was. There was hardly any aroma to it that would usually come with the pho. I understand that south of Vietnam like it sweet but this was way too much. I am giving 3 stars because I am basing my review only on the pho and can’t comment on the other dishes. Not sure if I’ll be back but if I do I am definitely ordering something else. On the other hand their other business “kêu” on the opposite side of the road that does Vietnamese baguette are amazing.

We have eaten one of the best and most authentic Vietnamese foods in London tonight. Congratulations.

I absolutely LOVE this place!! Brought the boyfriend here for date night and he really loved it too. Food tastes so authentic, still how I remember it from the last time I came a couple years ago. Delicious flavours, food cooked so we'll and prices are reasonable for the portions. Staff are also friendly and attentive. Service was also very quick even though it was quite full when we arrived! We were after a later-night dining experience and Kin took care of us straight away. Warm, cozy atmosphere, really generous serving sizes, quick service and although we didn’t have time to try the cocktails looked amazing. Definitely will be back x

The pho has tasty broth with layers of spices and flavors. Beef is mostly tender. The bowls look tasty too. Love the chili sauce. The spring rolls are plump and generously filled, but I would prefer a thinner and more savory/umami dipping sauce than the thick sweet paste. Service was prompt, although as a large group there was some confusion and missing plates of bean sprouts.

I love Cay Tre and this location is so cute and cosy! Meal is quick, delicious and very friendly staff. I took a client here for a work lunch and it was fantastic. My second time and will definitely be returning!

In spite of paying a service charge (which legally we can refuse), the restaurant manager decided that there was 2p missing after splitting the bill and he came to charge us the 2p difference. He hovered around making sure we wouldn’t leave without paying it. It made us feel like criminals. Of course we payed although we could refuse the service charge after what had happened. It was completely without any class or good taste whatsoever. Horrible, humiliating and embarrassing experience. More to them than us obviously. We are definitely anti-recommending the place.

Don’t order from here, I got the original beef pho, beef tasted old, dry/rubbery and was full of fat. My friends Wonton noodle soup had one shrimp in it and bunch of gristle and fat. Don’t charge that much and give such poor quality food, absolute joke!!!

Updated review. Last year I gave 5 start to food, service and atmosphere but I have to adjust after going tonight. The starters were very good but I had a chicken curry which tasted of nothing just very watery and the special rice will was swimming in oil. I was just too polite to say anything so tried to eat as much as possible but I was so disappointed and those two dishes alone were over £30 and I feel it was wasted. Shame really as last time I came it was amazing. Also £55 for two starters a curry and rice is just far too expensive for 1 person.

Great Vietnamese with nice seating. The menu is varied but not long as a dictionary as all bad Asian restaurants. Very nice Pho and fresh veg. I will return for a midweek diner or lunch.

Pretty cosy. Only Christmas songs playing in mid November which was random but not too loud. Enjoyed my food but the noodles in the Pho were very spaghetti like and too soft

I was hungry and cold, and nearly walked oast but took a chance and ate the best Vietnamese I have ever eaten - the sort of food that makes you glad to be alive - this is an amazing restaurant.

Very busy when we arrived as a "walk-in", but we did not have to wait too long We preferred a table away from those closest to the fierce, cold draught whenever the slow-closing entrance/exit door was opened. Service was pleasant despite being very overworked. Starters of summer rolls were excellent as was the lemon-cured beef salad. A seafood pho was a disappointment but the chilli and lemongrass chicken was excellent, though there were many bones to be avoided. Overall, Very Good

If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. This restaurant is a scam. I paid 38 pounds for 2 dishes of canned food and 2 rice (which cost 8 pounds). I am 99% sure that the food was canned because I am familiar with the taste and texture of canned food. You would think that a restaurant of this calibre would minimally serve fresh food. The price of the rice was also not in the menu/not obviously stated.

Not one to typically leave a review, but here to warn potential patrons. White Jasmine rice here cost £4 each, I think that in itself tells a lot.

Delicious food at great value, and excellent service - big shout out to Kin for looking after us so well. If you like Viet food - definitely visit Cay Tre rather than the Kingsland Road. The food is far more authentic than any of the spots i've tried on Kingsland Road, and far more flavour! Come in a big group so you can get lots and share. Kin guided us through the menu and ensured we had a great mix of dishes from each section of the menu. Our dish highlights include: - Mango salad - Betel Leaf Dumplings - Chicken wings (a must) - Salt and pepper squid (a must) - Smoky aubergine (they also had a piggy aubergine dish with minced pork which sounded lovely!) - Shaking beef - Saigon hawker rice Surprisingly the cocktails were amazing too - i wouldn't have known it was a spot for delish cocktails as well as food. The Lychee Martini was particularly refreshing and delicious. Now i just need to come back to try the Pho........

We first visited in 2005 , which was our introduction to Vietnamese cuisine. The food is just as good now as it was then and the staff are lovely!

Delicious Pho, summer rolls and salad!

Their pho is so delicious! I always get the Saigon Pho and it never disappoints. It has different beef cuts in it that are tender and flavorful. Their Hanoi garlicky beef pho is also good, but has a strong taste and heavy garlic flavor (as expected!). Would also suggest the stir-fried morning glory and the mango prawn salad - both are super yummy. We are also fans of their sticky chicken wings. Too many good dishes to choose... Definitely one of our favorite pho restaurants in London and would highly recommend visiting. Reservations are easy to come by, so worth checking out.

What a shame. I order from this place regularly and received what should be identical dishes only one looks great and the other one was served with literal duck fat and skin and tiny pieces of pork belly. Incomparable plates. So disappointed.

Delicious pancake and Claypot catfish

Huge thanks to the manager - Kin for always delivering excellent service. Highly recommend this place for great, fresh food that seems pretty authentic. Recommend the pancake, iced coffee and banana fritters!

The food is incredibly good. Flavors just pop from the first to the last bite. Some of the dishes can be quite spicy but most aren't. Good balance of the spices. You will find the standard pho and bahn mi on the menu but I recommend trying something new! There are also vegetarian options.

previously visited the soho branch, the atmosphere and food here are also pretty similar. staff are very friendly and attentive. i ordered a mango salad but after eating about 3/4 of it i realised there was no mango in the salad, i brought this up to the waiter who was very apologetic and explained i had been given a papaya salad by mistake. they automatically removed the salad from the bill. staff were very professional and dealt with this issue promptly. the papaya salad was still delicious though - given i ate most of it before realising the mistake. the broth of the pho as usual is delicious, as well as the summer rolls and salt and pepper squid

I had just come back from Vietnam and was missing the food a lot, this place was excellent for that, had a pork noodle thing, which I'd recommend. Normal london restaurant prices, not too too painful on that front and nice vietnamese beer

We found this restaurant on Eater and are so glad we tried it! Clearly a neighborhood favorite, it was pretty busy on a Saturday night. Great service and cute decor, and the food was phenomenal. We tried the original Pho and the Bun Bo Hue with chicken. The latter was nice and spicy with a wonderful lemongrass-flavored broth. I wish we were in town longer so we could try everything on the menu! From what I saw at the other tables, everything they serve is outstanding.

Nice Vietnamese restaurant in Shoreditch. The interior decoration is nice and comfortable with good lighting. The menu is great with Pho and Bun Cha and many other delicious dishes. A great place to eat with friends.

Food tastes good but I found the piggy aubergine a bit too sweet.

This is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant which provided excellent food for our lunch. It is also very good value, but don't go for the décor. I love Vietnamese beef (marinated in oyster sauce) and this one did not disappoint. My wife had the mackerel dish, which did not look much but was also very tasty. We also recommend the egg and garlic rice and the mango salad with prawns. The staff were very friendly and we were even offered a free drink when they found out it was my birthday. We will definitely be going back.

Very decent Vietnamese food, coming from a picky Vietnamese myself. However, the food is not 5-star wow and some dishes are a bit salty. Still recommended for a decent Vietnamese fix in London!

We’re regulars at the cay tre soho and viet grill but today we visited the branch in shoreditch. Overall great dining experience. The service we received from Kin, Alison and Eric were great and attentive. Kin had a great sense of humour and gave us some recommendations from the menu which we will definitely try next time! The food was excellent, couldn’t fault what we ordered. One down side was I wish my bun bo hue had a little bit more noodles in it but other than that Ild come back here again and again.

We were a group of 3 tonight and had a lovely meal at Cay Tre. Food was very tasty and the staff were very helpful when we were undecided on what to order. Kin, Eric and Allison were the staff serving us tonight and they all deserve a special mention on how attentive they were. 5/5
