Catch 22 in Bristol, City of

5 years ago when I first arrived at Bristol I had my first meal here. It was just different compared to other fish & chips. Boss is definitely a great lad and I hope this restaurant would come back in the future.

We really enjoyed our vegan fish and chips. We were very impressed with the portion size - which included delicious battered vegetables alongside our ‘fish’. Was reasonably priced and we were able to find a bench in the sunshine outside the nearby cathedral to eat them on - perfect! There were some tables and chairs inside though too if you wished to sit in. Would definitely recommend. Thanks!

Great food, brilliant service, hot food and so tasty. Nice choice of drinks with a lovely atmosphere inside the restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed by my wife & daughter for a lunch time treat. Brynsiencyn mussels & sauce! wow! Diolch!

I am guessing that the gent that served me is the owner as he is the only member of staff that I see every time I go in. He is always friendly and serves with a smile and the food is always good and always hot

Very generous portions. The vegan banana blossom 'fish' is great! My go-to when I want 'fish' and chips.

2 portions of fish & chips with some sauces should have been £20.50 (already pretty expensive) but card was charged £25.50. I luckily looked at the receipt & did the maths. The cashier went straight into defensive (a clear sign that somebody's telling porkies), saying that I'd counted wrong: 'it's the sauces' - for £5?! & when I showed him the receipt then said he has 'big fingers' & had accidentally pressed 5 instead of 0. I find that hard to believe, since 5 is two keys away from 0 on card machines. Also, it wasn't even busy so not like they were under pressure where a mistake like that could happen. They have some renovations going on at the moment, and it being end of summer, it wouldn't be a stretch to think they're dealing with some financial challenges, although that's pure speculation on my part. The cashier eventually gave me a £5 from the till, but it marred the whole experience, and I won't be going back there or recommending to anyone. Fish & chips were okay but nothing special; would recommend going somewhere cheaper.

Lovely service, crispy batter, fresh milky cod, a slice of lemon, and the best chips I've had at a chippy. My daughter loved the Vegan fish with Seaweed and Samphire. 10/10

We pre-ordered a collection for 15 people. The food was ready for when we agreed, and everything was accounted for and labelled accordingly. Staff were really friendly and very attentive and most importantly the food was fresh and tasted delicious! Everyone was very happy!

Really grateful for the team at Catch22 for being superstars in pulling together a large order for a 17 person team event. Communications beforehand were brilliant, including a text message to confirm a couple of hours before. They went out of their way to make it a nice smooth process and were happy to add last minute additions! Great delivery of food, super friendly service and delicious, fresh dinner for all! Not normally a fan of vegetarian/vegan fish - but this was the closest thing to fish and chips I have tasted since going vegan.

Fancied a big helping of chips and had seen good reviews about Catch 22. We ordered the large and this is easily a meal for two. The cod was well cooked, with a good crispy crust while being flaky and tender. A large piece is probably 25 cm long and as mentioned, easily fit for two. The chips are a highlight, crispy and full of flavor. The cops could do either bring salt a bit to keep them even nicer.

I had eagerly waited outside on the pavement for over twenty minutes. On all their web sites it states open at twelve noon. But here came the catch the manager said he would not open for a further 30 minutes due to staff shortages. I asked if I could have a seat inside his restaurant but was turned down flat. I leave the reader to decide on the line taken. Perhaps he should have used a different more pragmatic bait.

Lovely, friendly staff and the best vegan fish and chips I have ever tasted. They marinade the banana blossom in seaweed, samphire and lemon juice and just makes it taste amazing! I am obsessed with coming here every time we are in Bristol - would definitely recommend.

Just order a takeaway and this what came, my fish was fried a couple times, nothing was fresh, chips was a little bit and dry and greasy at the same time, I wouldn’t NOT recommend! Waste of money

I'd heard that Catch22 is reputedly the best fish and chip shop in Bristol, but as a long term vegan, I don't eat fish. Nevertheless, I heard through the grapevine that Catch22 has now introduced a vegan fish and chip option using banana blossom, so my wife and I just had to try it.

We were a family of 6 out to eat. 3 of us chose the breaded plaice from the menu but after about 15 minutes, having been told by the waiter that we wouldn't have to wait much longer, he returned again to tell us that they did not have any breaded plaice! We then had to reorder and wait again for our meal. We then asked for the dessert menu - on the main menu it told us to ask a waiter for this - only to be told that they don't do desserts! All in all a very disappointing evening!

This used to be the one and only place to get fish and chips. However, recently the chip portions have dramatically reduced and the prices have gone up. To pay £3.70 for a "large" portion of chips and then receive less than half a bag is a bit of a joke. The only saving grace has been the quality of chips has always been high, but the last few visits the chips have been chewy and anaemic rather than crunchy and well cooked. Really think it's time to change chip shops!

Have used Catch 22 on five occasions in the last year or so. When freshly cooked the food is excellent and perfectly reasonable value. Oddly enough my experience has been to go at the busiest times - around 6-7 in the evening or around 10.pm. If you have to wait, the food is freshly cooked and piping hot, but I've had 2 occasions when I have had takeouts immediately served from the hot storage where the fish is dried out and overcooked and everything is lukewarm.

Very poor standard of food. Chips were soggy and white. Fish was stale. Order incorrect after confirming with server. Very disappointed as the fish and chip shop used to be so good. Maybe this was the reason the shop was empty of customers. There used to always a queue and food was cooked fresh. Suggest people walk around to SaltnMalt at Whapping Wharf where The standard of cuisine is very good.

Stopped here for lunch with friends having read the good reviews. Because it’s quite pricey we had the lunch lite bite. At £7.95 it includes fish (COD or haddock etc) and either curry sauce, mushy peas etc.

Just had a lovely fish supper at catch 22.The fish was lovely and fresh beautiful white flesh. We both had a standard size myself a cod and my husband a haddock unfortunately we were unable to finish it because it was rather large. I would recommend this chippy for supper any time. Just make sure your hungry.

We were surprised to find a quality Fish and Chip shop in amongst the Cathedral area and were not disappointed! We ordered just the standard Haddock and Chips and were flabbergasted by the portion sizes. They were freshly cooked to order and were delicious.

Catch 22 is a very good chippy with a range of freshly cooked seafood dishes. Service is quick and friendly and the atmosphere is good.

Across the road from the Cathedral, this is an excellent fish and chip restaurant. I had the Plaice & Chips and was rewarded with a good-sized portion of both. The fish was very tasty and they had real ale too! Loved the witty and themed decor which just added to the experience.

For a few days I have to be on a fibre free diet which is not only anathema to my eating habits but limits where to eat. Walking down Park St in Bristol there’s noodle bar after poodle parlour of various exotic eateries presenting more fibre than a coir carpet. So happen I did upon Catch 22 which does fish n chips. Perfect, no fibre. At 6pm it wasn’t too busy. A very pleasant and efficient waiter brought my order. Excellent cod n chips, though i doubt if that fish swam up the Avon gorge that morning. A large glass of white and a bottle of sparkling water and bill coming in under £20 meant for satisfaction all round. Just right and thank you Catch 22. I know where to come another time even when my diet is back to normal.

I was disappointed given the extremely high ratings from everyone else. A number of options were off the menu - just crossed out with a marker pen - but there was no clue about this on the website. Portions were generous, service pleasant enough, surroundings lively but not too noisy - but it was all badly let down by the food. Just not the exquisite treat previous reviewers reported. Chips pale; fish dry and coated in a tough overcooked batter; tartar sauce portions were tiny; mushy peas excellent though. Clean toilets. That's it.

It’s a bit of a cliché, but you really can’t get a better meal than proper fish and chips and Catch22 delivers. We all plumped for various versions of f’n’c and they were all just fabulous; freshly cooked, crispy chips, juicy fish and all very tasty. The restaurant itself is friendly and warm and the tables are simple and clean, with a varied menu - good prices. What not to like?

Ate here last month and it was superb, probably top 5 fish and chips I've ever had in my life. Went last night and not so good, gravy tasted a bit off and fish over cooked. They were understaffed though, and the chef did apologise for this and couldn't have been more polite. Maybe it was just an off day- the first time I went really was excellent. Really enjoyable experience. The fish and chips we had were excellent. The team were very welcoming on arrival, the menu is extensive, and not expensive. The fish was lovely, the gluten free batter was light and the chips were amazing.

This place is opposite the Royal Marriott hotel where we were staying so we just crossed the road and went straight in as my hubby really fancied fish and chips! There is a varied menu but I was a little bit disappointed as I like just grilled fish. As we ordered the waitress explained that the grill was off. So I ended up with fish and chips, mushy peas the same as my hubby. Got to say im not a lover of battered fish and chips but these were boiling hot and gorgeous! We had soft drinks but there were beers and wine on sale as well. The decor is quirky, the actual resturant is bit cold but the front is a chippy so the door is open quite a lot. Our waitress was pleasant and chatty and it turned out she was welsh like us!! We think it was a reasonable price for the portions, fish was large with ample amount of chips too! Ketchup and mayo was on the table which I love, I hate all those sachets which take ages to open and you have to pay for as well! Overall we enjoyed.

Veggie hotdog- charred to death on the outside and barely cooked on the inside, and certainly not "Frankfurter Style" as advertised. It was also absolutely smothered in jalapenos, ie, way more jalapeno than actual hot dog and in was ignored when asking for them to remove some and told "that's how it comes" (clearly, I scraped them off, but not the point). Staff member was borderline rude.

This is the place to go out for fish and chips in Bristol. We were checking TripAdvisor and asking random people. Everyone were pointing at this amazing place. And they were right! It was a perfect meal!

A place recommended by my son who is quite a fussy eater so I expected a good experience - I was not disappointed!! Good choice on the menu with plenty of options to suit all. Crispy batter, lovely chips and a tasty pot of mushy peas!! Interesting fishy ‘B-movie’ styled decor adds to the experience. Will certainly be visiting again soon.
