Disregard any negative comments about this pub - Lorraine & Mick have really done a great job with the place! We’ve visited on numerous occasions and been met with friendly bar staff, a good selection of drinks (including my favourite flavoured gins) and basket meals - perfect if you’re peckish and to feed hungry kids! They put on great events including live music, bingo and quiz night to name a few. I’m looking forward to their upcoming karaoke night! Visit The Old Railway (previously The Cat and Canary) - you won’t be disappointed!

I moved to the area 6 years ago , wouldn’t drink here before the current landlady took this bar on .The improvements made are immense ! The ales are fresh and tasty , the lagers are clean and crisp and the atmosphere is very much focussed on being family orientated . Great garden for the kids to play in and just a great vibe throughout. I recommended this bar to a friend for a birthday bash and what a day was had by all - music , laughter and a great day for all . This pub is now part of our community and such a welcome addition to Henfield ! Great location right on the South Downs link . Pop in and try - it’s highly recommended !

Service poor. Waited ages for food and no one else around Waited and waited to be served in the bar. The last time we came we waited for food for a long time (even though no one else waiting for food). So don’t think we will revisit. Shame. Nice outside space though

So I haven’t been to this pub for a long time and we decided to visit on an off chance just for a drink.we parked on the road no double lines and not blocking any vehicles, delivery or other wise. When we went into the establishment we were immediately bark at by the lady behind the bar saying you can’t park there. Not a nice welcome. So we went back to our car and left. I can firmly say we won’t be returning.

New owners are welcoming & friendly & have done a great job of cleaning & tidying the place up. Although they’ve only been there a few months they have already had some great bands & other events on & have started revamping the garden for the summer. Ale is well kept & they always have Harveys Best plus a changing second ale. Perfect place to pop in for a pint if you are using the Downslink.

Ignore the 2 negative reviews - the first one relates to the previous owners and the 2nd is definitely not our experience as regular customers. The new owners have already made loads of improvements. The pub is cleaner, friendlier and much more welcoming in every way. A good proper local with plenty of plans for next year.

Bad experience at pub with new Landlords. Miserable landlady in clown's trousers! Husband just lurking at back of bar awaiting his next instructions. Go at your peril! Very good singer but couldnt be enjoyed fully due to dull Landlady.

Unfriendly rude staff, shouted at us from outside before we got near the door. No food, despite sign outside saying lunch available.

We confess to not eating there but we observed that the food was freshly prepared to order, was well presented and looked appetising. Our visit was at lunch time mid week and in the middle of a country walk. Having just had a picnic we dropped in for a drink. We received a warm welcome from the locals and the land lady who gave every impression of caring about the service that she offers. We look forward to visiting again and on a rainy day would not hesitate to eat there.

Popped in here for a drink and some food on a Sunday and was met with a rather icy and unfriendly reception. Only food available was a BBQ, quote "If you don't want it suggest you go elsewhere" which I did. Not a great welcome and one which I'll not receive again as I won't go back. Fortunately there's a lot of other more friendly establishments not more than 10 minutes walk away.

Great pizza, beer, sport on TV and a pool table! What more could you want?! Food also available to take away with a good sized children's play area in the garden.

As I'm sure many others do, we stopped off whilst on the South Downs Cycle. It's perfectly located and service was good. Food 'slightly' dissapointing - I had fish and chips (which given the proximity to the coast could have been better), one friend had a burger (reported to be good) and another had a pizza (it looked like a cheesy mess but apparently was great!). Only a couple of beers - had hoped for a few more options, but what they had was OK. Certainly worth a drink stop off, either as a reward for the leg north from Bramber, or as a loosener prior to going south!

We parked in the car park next to the pub to ride part of the downs link. We cycled to Shoreham and back and stopped here for some food. Friendly staff and a lovely meal of ham egg and chips in the garden.

We popped in here for lunch after a midweek walk along the river and Downslink old railway line. It was hot and sunny so we sat in the garden under a parasol. We chose from the simple lunchtime menu. Service was friendly, my pint of Harveys was in good condition, our food was served quickly and was very good - especially the Club sandwich.

Since the kitchen has been taken over by Woods Kitchen, I have eaten in the Cat and Canary on many occasion and the food is excellent. The Eggs Benedict is fantastic. The children's menu is excellent and very good value for money. I really visited the Beer Festival at the Cat and Canary, they had a good selection of beers and ciders, live music and bbq with homemade burgers and much more more, all of which were reasonably priced.

Well done Cat and Canary for your beer and cider festival this weekend. Good beers and cidars, BBQ food and music. Good beer selection. This is a local pub pub that is down to earth and friendly. Locals are crucial to to the pub all year round. Found them very friendly when I moved into area and went there to watch footie in the winter.

Restaurant now run by a Punjabi chef who produces are both British and Indian dishes. We have sampled his Indian cooking which is excellent, different to most of the Indian restaurants in this area. The food is freshly prepared and very tasty. We wish him every success. We recommend his Masala Dosa as an alternative as a lunchtime snack!

In answer to Karen's comments below, the Cat & Canary has not closed down, it closed temporarily for a couple of weeks whilst undergoing a major refurbishment to the bar area. It now boasts a lovely new bar, new & very comfortable furniture and new flooring. The restaurant now offers a Sunday carvery & Indian specials in the week in addition to the very extensive normal menu available daily. You can always be assured of a warm welcome from Landlady, Jackie. This pub offers something for everyone & is well worth a visit!

Probably the best kept secret of Henfield. Unpretentious, solid courtesy, very clean and well kept bar!Their steak nights, fish and chip nights and curry nights are to be envied by (the so called) 'good and the great' and so reasonable (meat from Hutchins!!!).Landlady Jackie is so very good and welcoming. If you haven't visited or are fed up with the usual boring others....this is for you.

This is a proper regulars pub, with darts and a pool table. Sells ok pub grub at a reasonable price. Beer is normally well kept. Has a decent garden in a nice quiet spot right next to the Downslink so a great place to stop if you are walking/cycling on this. Have even seen horses tethered in the garden whilst the riders have a drink! A bit old fashioned inside and can get very crowded at weekends as they often have karaoke, bands etc.

We had a very enjoyable meal here. The Cat and Canary serves good quality traditional pub food. Well served, helpings were generous in all 3 courses. The pub has a good selection of beers. In the summer you can sit in one of their 2 gardens. We will definitely visit again.

Usually I have been very happy with the cakes and coffee here, always fresh and tasty but Saturday we purchased some doughnuts and it was obvious on first bite that they were stale, at least from the previous day. Little jam also. Disappointed

Scruffy interior - not clean. We ordered lunch and sat outside. Was given a box of cutlery condiments with various sauces to carry to our table outside. , the dispenser lid of the mustard was black with ancient sticky dried on mustard and dirt. i told the one member of staff who apologised, took it away, threw it in the bin behind the bar, but did not replace . No salt or pepper. Waited nearly an hour to be served.. food was dumped on our table with no apology. My sea bass was served swimming in oil. No waiting on tables ourside so not easy to complain after such a long wait. Moved inside as we were cold and asked for a coffee - the same one member of staff who was behind the bar as well as serving food, looked shocked and seemed nervous of such a request but agreed to try to make us one coffee and one tea but then came to our table o say she couldn't work the machine - so no hot drinks!! We left and will not be returning.i regretted paying up front for such a poorly cooked and presented and delayed lunch.
