CAT AND FIDDLE in East Devon

I enjoyed a lovely generous portion of scampi chips and thatchers haze in front of a warm cozy log burner 7th November 24 The staff are friendly it’s clean and tidy even though they have had an unfortunate event of a leak in the roof with works on going, don’t let this stop you enjoying what they have to offer. Go and give it a go, I was tempted by the carvery as it looked amazing but went for my go to favourite. I would definitely go again if ever passing in the future.

As per the title I hate leaving bad reviews but in this case it’s totally warranted. We booked a table in the restaurant we turned and was told because we had a dog we had to eat in the bar. Strange really as we don’t have a dog! We had to sit and eat our food as the great unwashed filed past checking out our food on their way to get a table. Then I had the unfortunate need to use the toilets I really wish I didn’t. I really should have wore my wellies the floor was swimming in god no what. The toilet cubicle was unusable as it to was flooded. I’m not sure if we will go back again as it’s a shame as we don’t live too far away.

Wow.... waste of fuel pulling into car park 20 mins at bar no sign of staff.... then told to q in front of "food till" All for 3 pints. Short staffed and inexperienced team. Blue ball have nothing to worry about

We popped in here after a family day at Crealy, good location and plenty of parking. Staff were brilliant very quick helpful and polite, carvery was really good plenty of meat and lots of veg options. Only thing that let the place down was the toilets were vile I mean disgusting and the place it's self isn't that clean, really gross carpets and dated.

This has been a place we have been to on multiple occasions, we were going to a concert near by and thought this would be a reliable place to go as we've always has good experiences here. Unfortunately this time wasn't a good experience and left us all feeling disappointed with the service, long waiting time for food and poor quality of food too. We all wanted something quick as easy as we had a local event to go too. We all ordered prawn baguettes with chips and salad. The pub was a little busy but wasn't fully booked as there was tables that were empty. We ended up waiting near an hour for our food 3 baguettes and when we were presented with our food it looked like it just been slapped on the plate no effort what so ever. The prawn were clearly frozen and were cheap tiny ones and just wasn't the kind of quality I would expect espically cos the sandwich were barely full we all were rather disappointed with our meals. The service wasn't great I was asked my the young barman if everything was ok and I mentioned that we weren't happy with our meals. He then was rather rude and said " well we have been rather busy so that's why" in a snappy tone. I said to him that when we wait an hour for a sandwich I expect it to at least be the a decent standard. The prawn and filling should be fresh if people are paying good money then I don't expect it to look the way it did. A half filled baguettes with cheap frozen prawns in. Dry lettuce on the size and cold onion rings. Definitely won't be returning.

Great carvery! Great quality food. Our plates were cleared. The soft play was a great addition also. Made it easier for the adults to eat.

I come here often with my two grandchildren, and as always the staff are warm friendly and efficient ,I went off to order our food and my Grandson gad a melt down ! Because he couldn't find me but lovely Jesse came to the rescue ! She truly is an angel and an asset to you ! As are all the staff , I like that it's clean and the food is good too ,and so nice you now have an outside space for the children ! Well done to you all

We enjoyed a good evening meal here. Only problem was the huge portions. Really huge. Nicely done. Carvery choice as well as ordinary menu. (Lady in front of me had turkey from the carvery AND steak pie. Where did she put it all?) Pleasant and helpful staff. Spacious premises so ideal for big families and groups. (A little bit soulless perhaps, but hey, you can't have it both ways.) Plenty of free car parking. Not expensive. We loved it.

Had the carvery, potatoes and parsnips were overcooked. Some were burnt. Food average at best. People were strange. Slightly on the Chavvy side.

Haven't visited for a few months but, again, a joy. Staff always friendly and the new young lady carving the meat was lovely to us and happy to have some friendly banter. Meat as tender and plentiful as always, loads of choice of fresh veg including crispy potatoes and parsnip but, strangely, the star of the show this time for me was the gravy! What have you done to it? It was so lovely, rich, thick , flavourful and piping hot (in fact steaming in the pan). Thought I heard another visitor say they thought it was gluten free, but whatever you have done, please do not change this recipe, it was absolutely delicious. Another 5 star to C&F!

Excellent pub with carvery, visited with three generations, 6 adults and 2 very small children. (Highchairs available) Carvery had choice of 4 meats, wide selection of freshly cooked vegetables. Pub also has family area with small soft play area and dining area or man dining close to the bar. We visited on a Sunday but pub all open in the week (closed Mon & Tues) and there are some special offers for mid week; 2 course carvery £15 for over 55s.

Our friends were excited to take us to this restaurant when we visited for the weekend. They had gone and checked it out for Sunday lunch and were telling us how great it was We however went for Sunday dinner Outside it was still advertising four meats but in reality they had sold out and only two meats available - Turkey which looked very dry and beef that looked similar. Three of us still opted for the roast but it was very disappointing as the meat was dry and vegetables Luke warm. By the end of our meal we at 8pm we were the only people in there My poor friend was devastated as she had been telling how great it was The waitress told us how busy they had been so sorry sold out of meats apart from end of beef and Turkey Therefore the moral of the story is go for Sunday lunch when it will be busy and you will have to wait but don’t go for Sunday dinner when little food and what is available is not hot The glasses of wine we ordered were also warm !

I went in with my family for a family lunch out and we all decided to get a carvery. Went up to the counter and was helped by a lovely young lad forgot his name unfortunately but he was amazing at helping my nan with her selection of veg and helped her plate it up for her and told us to enjoy our meal which was lovely. Was lovely service throughout our stay and we would totally come again!

Booked a Sunday roast for Our family , shown to our table a was nice a clean a young waitress very polite . Then …. Out serving waitress arrived for orders and I’m passing she was having a bad day !! I believe she was called Vanessa ! Short slightly older lady that was very blunt and boardline rude with not the twitch of a smile ! We’re outgoing and tried to make light of things but she turned a left with out a whisker of manners !! Shame as the food was lovely and the carver was a very friendly chap . Most part staff were very nice but this is a weak link in your chain ! Otherwise keep up the good work

Had a carvery. Meat and potatoes were lovely. Vegetables were dried out and nearly cold. Pricey carvery and nowhere near worth the money.

Lovely service! I came on quite a busy day with my wife for a lovely family meal.I noticed a change of person on the carvery I can't remember his name but he was a young lad very respectful and kind for his age. All staff seemed friendly even though it was busy. I used to work in hospitality so I know how hard it can be so well done to all stagf! I Will 100% come again.

Although this pub is looking a bit shabby on the outside it's reputation for good food is well deserved. They don't offer anything fancy - just good old fashioned pub grub. My husband and I (with dog) had the mid-week carvery. Staff made a big fuss of dog offering water, treats & cuddles. The carvery was excellent - meat melted in mouths & a huge selection of veg & condiments. Being of a 'certain' age we could have had a sweet for an extra 50p (they do a 2 course meal for over 55's at £15.00), but we were too stuffed to be able to manage it. Lovely friendly, welcoming staff & roaring log fire we will make a visit here a regular treat.

Visited after a day at Crealy. Would highly recommend best carvery/roast have even had out in a restaurant. Lovely staff, quick service, little soft play for the children. So glad to have found this place will definitely be back for sure. Thank you ☺️

Unfortunately after hearing great things. I left never wanting to return. I booked a table for 4pm for 16 people 2 weeks in advance. On arrival I was told ' we are really busy so you have two options, there is two tables on the play area or you can wait 30 minutes. To which I inform the bar lady this was booked saying we would sit anywhere but the play area. Unfortunately this member of staff went to the other side of the bar to other member of staff who was obviously unaware she was serving my father in law and said, well she can take it or leave it while laughing. Outside greeted by a bloke weeing on a car, the toilets by the play room were in need of a good clean, no soap and every where was sticky. Maybe that answers to why some one was using the car park. Now If I knew I could of taken 16 people out somewhere else at that time I would of left. I couldn't wait to eat and leave. As someone that works in the industry its totally unacceptable an apology would not of gone a miss, but obviously i had to take it or leave it. Will not recommend and will not visit again.

We arrived for our booked table, to be told that are table wasn’t ready. We were given two options no 1 wait for half an hour for our table or option two to be in the children’s play area! We chose our original option! But when queuing to buy our drinks we over heard the blond waitress saying to the dark haired waitress that we (our table) could take it or leave it! We have never been to such a place before. If we weren’t so hungry we would have left it! And how we wished we did…. The food was warm and the service was dreadful.

Wow, what an awesome Carvery, we've been trying all the local places to find which ones best and this one was so good!! And our server Vanessa was polite, attentive and a giggle, fantastic atmosphere and all round fantastic experience.

Amazing! We have visited several local establishments trialing carvery meals but we could have saved ourselves the time and expense if we had found you sooner. An exceptional meal with a fabulous selection of vegetables and choice of meats. Vanessa our server was cheerful, chatty and made a point of asking about over 55s in our party who didn’t want carvery. The icing on the cake was being able to get Old Mout to drink. We can’t recommend this highly enough and will be sure to return.

Popped in for one of the best carvery’s I’ve had. Great range of options. Welcoming environment and lovely staff. The whole experience was a really good one and would definitely visit again. They also had some great deals for over 55’s and a loads of other options to suit those who are hungry from baguettes to full meals.

First Cat and Fiddle visit this year. Staff as friendly as ever and food as delicious as always but....... no Alan...... they say he has moved on. What a shame he was such a lovely man. That said, another great meal. We will be back again very soon. Thank you.
