Sadly the staff were bordering on rude , especially the lady who appeared to be in charge . There was a tiny space to wait for a table. As I was on my own , the table which had been cleared for me by one of the other staff was not given to me and I was pit at a table next to a door where children were attending a private party. I wanted to order soup but was told it would be ½ hour. Not sure why that would be as it said soup was available from 12 noon and it was simply a case of putting some in a bowl ! This , coupled with a frosty atmosphere was enough to make me leave. There were 3 staff working in thr seating area yet there were uncleaned tables and lots of people who were clearly waiting to order . Sadly , I decided I wasn't particularly welcome and I decided to leave.

Food was nice however it is far more expensive than a regular tea room. Staff were friendly. A sandwich was £10, which is a bit steep when it only comes with a few crisps and a small salad.

Really fussy about where you sit to purchase items, don’t allow to take away breakfast rolls. Disappointing and inconvenient: missing sales due to this. Hardly got a foot through the door before jumping down my throat to say we can’t serve you on those tables.

Mum and I visited Ripley Castle and went to the tea rooms. We were disappointed with the castle as there was fiming there so couldn't walk in certain areas and any photos had all the film equipment in. It was also a very cold day so only spent about 20 mins there so that was a waste of money. We went in the tea room for a hot drink and a snack as there was nothing we fancied on the lunch menu (prices put us off). Mum had a savoury scone which she loved. I tried it too and it was delicious. I had a fruit scone and cut it a bit thinner on one side, but not that thin for it to crumble as soon as I put butter on. I decided to leave the butter off and just spread with cream but it was in pieces/crumbs, which spoiled it. By the time I finished it looked like a toddler had been sitting there. I found the cappunino too luke warm to enjoy. I have a thing about coffee rarely being hot enough to enjoy in cafes. Not being hot enough means I have to drink it straight away or put a saucer on top to stop it going cold quickly. Expensive coffee for not enjoying. I would have asked for another if it wasn't for mum being there and feeling very embarrassed. Hers was the same but she would never take anything back.

So disappointing that a cafe in such a lovely setting should have such poor service. The wait for food was unacceptable and the food equally poor.

Can't comment on the food as we never received it. We were told that there would be a 30 min wait for food. Which was fine as it was Easter Sunday. But I felt that they could have had a note on the door as people were queueing and leaving the door open and then not staying because they didn't want to wait. We we waited 40mins and then checked on our order. We were then told it would be another 20mins. People who arrived after us had been served so it was clear they had lost our order but there was no explanation or apology so we left.

Used to be excellent a few years ago. Still a very pleasant place but today the food was lacking any real flavour, quite expensive and not something I'll be bothering to seek out again. A pity they've let standards slip. Are they running it down prior to closing it? Parking was free but now charged for (ok, not expensive and £1 refunded) by quirky and difficult to use machines which react to everything you do very slowly to the extent that you wonder whether they are functioning or not!!

For a visit to a tearoom that is part of a prestigious estate, we were completely underwhelmed. It felt like the decor and furnishings hadn’t changed since our last visit 20 years ago and the quality of the food was basic, especially given the Harrogate prices. We won’t be returning.

Food was nice though when it came and staff were friendly but just a shame about the food wait- we watched many other people coming in to chase up their food too. Overall would recommend if you have the time to wait.

I don't mind paying a premium for the location and good food but this was pure profiteering. £9 for pate with one slice of toasted bread, £12 for blast furnaced scampi and £8 50 for a ham and picked sandwich between two pieces of sliced bread and some rocket. I cancelled the scone I'd ordered. Go to the local stores across the road. They have tables outside you can sit on and sell pies for £2.50.

Stopped on the way over to the Whitby area for a weekend away. Lovely traditional tea rooms in the grounds of a wonderful Castle. It was full/busy when we arrived. We managed to get a table. The staff are excellent here, so friendly and at the end, the man let us have free entry to the castle grounds and gardens because we purchased a coffee and soft drink (when the actual deal is take-a-way hot drinks) with our lunch. Food was lovely; my Wife ordered a Bacon and Brie Panini and I got a toasted cheese scone with chutney and farmhouse pate served with two huge slices of toasted sourdough and salad.

We had had a lovely tour of the castle and decided to get some lunch from the tea room. On entering, almost every table had dirty plates stacked up on them. I went to try and order at the till, to be told it was table service. We entered the tea room just after 2pm, our order wasn’t taken until 14:37. The food then took over 30 minutes to arrive. We only ordered 2 sandwiches, chips and a kids meal. Whilst being there for over 2 hours, there were still tables with dirty plates stacked up on tables next to us. The food was ok, nothing to write home about. but At a cost of over £37 for 2 adults and a child for lunch in a tea room, I didn’t find it to be good value for money, bearing in mind the long wait and the untidy state of the tables around us.

I am a relatively 'regular' customer in that I probably visit about 10-12 times a year to meet friends for coffee or have lunch there after a walk with my family members and dogs - and have done this for many years. I had arranged to meet a friend at 11 today, not realising the Christmas Fair was on. However we still met and the café was about half full. We only had coffee and my friend had a scone. TWO TIMES whilst my friend still was drinking her coffee 2 separate staff asked if they could clear our cups! We said no both times as we were not finished. The third time they asked if we had finished and we had so they cleared our cups and plate. We had been there a little over an hour, we were still chatting when we were approached by a man and told he had a long line of people waiting to come in and more or less we had to leave. He said thank you for our understanding but we didn't really have a choice! at that time there a couple of empty tables being cleared and as we paid and left there were only 3 couples waiting - all inside the café so most certainly not a long line. I appreciate it was a busy day but we felt harassed and rushed, certainly not valued customers which I feel we are!

We have been often and generally it is pretty good. We were horrified yesterday, however, to see that on every outside table there was a wasp-trap filled with writhing wasps in the process of drowning to death. Our grandchildren, whom we try to influence to be considerate to other species, were horrified and we had to leave the place. We know that some people can't cope with wasps but this is a cruel way to deal with them which sends a bad message about animal welfare, especially to children. There are other, effective and kinder, ways to deter wasps such as hanging up artificial wasp nests.

We had a pleasant meal but when I was getting up to go I put my hand down to the seat and got a splinter right down my nail into the 'quick'. When I looked I was sat near a rotting part of the seat, and one or two others were in the same condition. I did tell staff inside including the assistant manager but I was simply told 'yes the seating does need maintaining'. There was absolutely no interest and no apology at all. I've since spent a painful half hour at home trying unsuccessfully to get the spell out. Not the ideal way to spend a lovely Sunday afternoon, and I'm feeling decidedly 'miffed'. I am local and have visited here many times when out walking but each time I am left disappointed and it is such a shame. It’s a great spot but I feel like the focus on service just isn’t there and it’s only getting worse. They must rely on one off tourist visits rather than repeat custom. Yesterday I visited with my family and my 4 year old nephew really wanted a tuna cheese melt panini (as in desperate for one, had been talking about it for an hour before we got there!). I appreciate this isn’t on the menu, but as the menu features a tuna sandwich and also a cheese and ham panini, we asked if it was possible to make one, ie swap the ham for tuna before you toast it. We were told no, “the chef doesn’t like us to make requests”. Not even willing to go and ask. The sun came out which was fab but I was worried about my baby getting sun burnt so asked if we could put one of the umbrellas up from an empty table, again told no “we’re not allowed to move them”, so we had to relocate the family to the table with the parasol. At a previous visit recently I had asked for a crumpet or piece of toast for my baby and I was told no they weren’t doing toast, just meals at that time (makes no sense to me, you’re making a massive profit with minimal effort putting a slice of bread in the toaster). Granted these things are not massive, but this attitude of not being willing to do anything I’ve ever asked them to do really puts me off going again, particularly when these are pretty standard requests I could do myself.

When I asked for another cup I was brought one but the original was left on the table and I had to ask for this to be taken away. I have been to the Castle Tea Room on numerous occasions, but this time, with a larger group - and for lunch instead of just the usual light refreshment. It was chilly outside and the restaurant was in full lunch time swing. But we were quickly accommodated inside at a comfortable table for 6. The menu is varied, with easy choices for everyone in our hard-to-please group. One of us enjoyed the pate platter; soup of the day (vegan) was superb; many choices for vegetarians; cakes are homemade and fresh (lots to choose from so save room -or do as one of us did, and have a piece as your lunch), All of us highly recommend this comfortable, casual place as a detour if you're in the area, or as a respite after walking the castle grounds and deer park.

We sat down and after a long time the girl came and asked if we were ready to order we asked what cakes were available she replied in the cabinet go and have a look I will come back when you have all made up your mind. In the meantime the lady on the other table was served a scone which she complained about as it was dry and broke into about eight pieces the waitress said to her what do you want me to do about it? She was so rude and unhelpful. She definitely needed a customer service course. After another 20 minutes of waiting the waitress never returned to us so we all left. As mentioned earlier there was SEVEN of us which would have given the cafe a very decent sale but this didn’t seem to bother the waitress. Shame about this one.. we must have come on a bad day. Visited at 3.45pm (close at 5pm). Waited our turn in doorway in the hope to be seated. To be fair it seemed to be busy inside. Decided to take a seat outside but waited until our turn to ask if it was table service or if we order at counter. After an awkward pause we were told they will come to us. The waitress arrived after a few minutes but we were greeted straight away by being told they don't serve food after 4pm. Not a problem, but a "hello" first would have been nice. Even though we had time, we decided not to eat due to the abruptness of the instruction. After deciding not to leave, we ordered drinks and waited about 10mins. Nice coffee and hot chocolate but can't recommend unfortunately simply down to attitude. It was just a shame but just didn't like being made to feel like we were imposing. Appreciate it was obviously busy inside and we aren't precious but there is no need to be rude. Although I can't recommend this place I can highly recommend the ice cream shop across the road....got food and a smile! :) I guess we all have bad days, but it's nice to be nice!

The cafe was busy anyway so this made it extra hard for them but they handled it in their stride. I will defiantly be going back again, they also made our dogs very welcome and even gave him a dog biscuit. Dogs are allowed only in one section so as not to bother people who don’t have dogs. Well done all of you, I will be back!

This is a bustling cafe serving a delightful menu from breakfast to lunch and afternoon tea. All home baked produce, well presented, hot and reasonable priced. Well worth a visit followed by ice cream at the ripley ice cream shop, a walk around the beautiful grounds and a visit to the Castle is a must.

First visit since it was extended, very pleasant surroundings and lovely coffee. Rather expensive is the downside, but the cake was good!

Called in for coffee today after a lovely walk around Ripley Castle grounds. My friends and I found a table by the window, which had not been cleared after the previous customers. That was not a problem, we chose the table ourselves even though there were others that were clear. We waited 20 minutes for someone to come to our table to clear it and take our order. The staff were aware we were waiting. We spoke to a female member of staff and asked if she could take our order and she said she would do that "when she had time", she was quite offhand and sounded put out that we had asked. The table next to us became vacant and so we moved the dirty dishes from our table onto it to make our wait a little more pleasant. Quite a few other people came in after us and were served by the female staff member who had said she would take our order "when she had time". Eventually a very personable young man served us with courtesy and care, while the female staff member continued her duties with a grumpy demeanour.

The system for take away drinks is awful. The young staff are great and the guy at the til but the woman server at least over 40 had an attitude towards other staff and customers. Next time we come to castle we’re avoiding this place and grab drinks on the way here. Plus it’s alright if your over 40

I visited ripley Castle today to take part in a Segway experience which was excellent. However I visited the cafe before and after and was less than impressed. I went to the counter to order two take away drinks and was looked at by the server as though I’d just insulted him. I was told I will have to wait a while, which I said that’s fine. I was moved by rude servers at least 4 times whilst awaiting my drinks and felt very uncomfortable being moved about. It’s not geared up very well to take drinks away, but more towards eating/drinking inside. I won’t be visiting this cafe again

I live locally and have often been to this cafe . The last 3 occasions have been disappointing and all for the same reason . Food and service was good . When it comes to paying at the counter the staff have been very rude . I know people can be stressed and have a bad day but you need to be polite.

We called after a bike ride and ordered drinks, two toasted teacakes and a scone. After having been brought the drinks, I popped back in to see where the food was and was told they'd be out in a few minutes. After 30 mins since ordering I went in to pay and said can we cancel the food as we've waited too long. I was told 'we'd came at the wrong time.' I said, 'what time should we have come?' and was responded to with a shrug. We can't recommend the food, but the service wasn't great.

We are here after a bike ride having been here several times before with no problem. However our order was taken quite a simple one! Only got on Latte when we ordered two and then the panini My husband ordered was cheese and ham came as bacon cranberry and Brie??? No we ordered a toasted sandwich, goats cheese panini and a ham and cheese! It was taken back with our server saying no you definitely ordered bacon. No we did not and it was written down wrong... needless to say after repeating our order three times offered the wrong panin twice we conceed and took it!! Then when I asked where our coffee was they brought two out! Really poor service but actually nice food!! Charged for an extra latte to add insult to injury.... poor!

Overall, our experience here was middling. The venue and furnishings are tired looking. The staff seemed pretty tired on our visit too, but not for lack of trying - they were simply very busy and doing their best. The menu and prices are all very fair. It's a good spot to recharge after a walk around the grounds, but I suspect better in summer when the outdoor seating and romantic setting can be better enjoyed.

Smelled awful when we walked in, only 10% full but had to wait to be seated? I Think food and drinks are very overpriced for what they are, £3 for a small tray bake and £3 for a coffee is fair enough if there really well done, there’s however are not. My drink was disgusting I complained but received no refund nor offer of a replacement. Really need to step up there game especially in this day and age when there’s so many other great places to go. Spoiled a rare few hours out with the wife! Shame

My wife and I visited the Castle Tea Room Yesterday (25/10/18) for lunch. We are regular visitors, but will think again before returning. We were shown to a table and given menus. There was steak and ale pie on the board and I was looking forward to it, but after half an hour we still hadn't had our order taken, so we got up and went elsewhere. There are far two many tables for the meagre staff and kitchen facilities, for them to deal with a full house. Pity; I would have liked the pie.

Called in today for lunch. A lady met us where you wait to to seated...she said table 10, we were not shown to our table. just pointed. Could not fault the food and drink, the food came quickly with the hot drinks. After finishing our drinks and meals we waited over 1/2 an hour for our table to be cleared, we then started to pile to plates up on the end of table. Not once were tabled checked. One of our group got up to ask about ordering additional cups of tea and some deserts.

Called in whilst walking along the Nidderdale way. Plenty of staff and very friendly! Wasn’t the nicest coffee I have ever had but my wife enjoyed her hot chocolate and caramel slice. We were also able to feed our daughter so this place ticked all the boxes. It was a touch pricey but to be expected here.

Visited the Cafe but not the Case.We had stopped for a cuppa on our way to Harrogate and were pleasantly surprised! It was a busy, clean and inviting venue and the tea was hot and refreshing. We decided to try the scones , jam and cream. We were not disappointed! I had a no gluten scone which tasted lovely although it was a little crumbly! Was surprised to find a cafe like this, in a small village ,which caters for all diets! The staff, although very busy were all very pleasant.. The food that we saw all looked very nice and generous in portion size and the prices here were not over the top! The grounds looked attractive and the shops interesting. Well worth a stop for refreshments!

I ordered 3 jacket potatoes for myself and my 2 children. 3 (tiny) child portions arrived, I was expecting one adult and 2 child portions. As soon as I pointed out this easy to make error, politely I might add, the waitress snapped at me straight away saying it was my fault I had clearly said 3 child portions.....I was so horrified, in front of visiting family, I just ate the child's portion as didn't want to make a big fuss. It was so small and pathetic, even my 4 year old immediately asked for something else to eat as he was still hungry. It's not the cheapest cafe, in fact I would say it's expensive, so it's bad value for money. I approached the waitress afterwards and said that I thought she had been very rude to me, and she was again rude, saying again I had been in the wrong. (I really don't think I intended to eat a child's portion for myself!). I can highly recommend the castle and grounds, they are great and peaceful, and the staff there are extremely lovely and friendly - take a flask of coffee and a picnic and avoid the terrible cafe! Or go to the pub!

We have visited the tea rooms a couple of times in the week due to visiting the archery classes at the castle. The food is tasty and good value. The service was friendly and attentive. I would recommend the tea rooms to anyone visiting Ripley, especially with children were they made them very welcome.

We called for lunch today, were shown to a table, that had not been cleaned, dirty cloth and covered in crumbs. We turned that table down and moved to another. There were tables around us that had not been cleared of dirty pots, those that had been cleared had not been wiped, one couple next to us was actually brushing the crumbs on to the floor with a menu because it had not been wiped. Chairs were haphazard around the tables, not straightened up when people left. This was not due to lack of staff, we noticed all the staff glancing at the uncleared tables, but obviously hoping someone else would do the work. The staff were in our opinion a bit lazy, doing the minimum. The food was average. On departing my husband told a member of staff the cafe was disgraceful, her answer was we have been busy, in fact staff were standing about and lacked supervision. We met one couple outside who told us they had walked out after seeing the state the tables were in. We are local to the area, regularly drive past, but I am afraid this place will be off our dining list in future.

My husband and I have gone very frequently to the Castle Tea Rooms over the last few years and we cannot understand the poor reviews in Trip Advisor about customer service as we have ALWAYS received excellent service. We are always met at the door and taken straight to a table and our our order has been taken and served promptly. The waiters are friendly without being gushing. The beverages and food are also excellent.

Stopped for lunch with our Jack Russell. Sat inside, as it was too hot for the dog, at a table near the door, and were given a menu immediately. Tea rooms were very busy, but staff warned everyone it was a half hour wait at least for food - nice to be informed, not many places do.

Popped in for a bite before work and noticed that it was filled with dirty tables which made me want to take away as i went to get my tuna sandwich i noticed a pair of scissors just lying there as i gave it to the guy working he looked completely clueless, once my food was cooked they picked it up with their hands!! and just shoved it in the packaging so when it came to eating it, most of the tuna and cheese was stuck to the top and it was not enjoyable. I wish I went back to complain and get my money back but I just didn't have time by then

Not open 24 hours anymore since COVID, but open from 6am until 12am except Sun. The ATMs outside are available 24/7, and the store is huge, everything you could possibly want

Popped in as I honestly was desperate for the toilet. I noticed they had a cafe so was very happy to purchase something or even grab a cute little gift on my way out. I was immediately bellowed at across the room by a scary looking woman who said ‘we don’t have public toilets, that is what you’re looking for isn’t it?’ I said that I was but I was happy to purchase something too (I totally understand business owners view on this however it is a ladies time of the month, I was desperate and I verbalised that I was willing to purchase something too). She told me that I was a liar and I wouldn’t buy anything and clearly wasn’t going to tell me where the toilet was so I used the disabled quickly (no one else was around). I said that it was disgusting to deny another person the human right to use the bathroom. SHE TOLD ME THAT I WAS DISGUSTING!!! Wow. I used the bathroom and calmly came out saying that I had full intentions of buying something and as I’m from a small historic town myself, I’m more than happy to support local businesses. She proceeded to aggressively tell Me that I wasn’t going to buy anything so feeling intimidated I left. To which she followed me to the door, then started taking photos of our car through the window. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! VILE
