Castle Lodge Buttery seems to strike a balance between efficiency and charm. While it may not have the quaintness of a small café, its bustling atmosphere reflects its popularity among patrons. The emphasis on cleanliness and friendly service contributes to a positive dining experience, even if the food doesn't clinch culinary awards. It's the kind of place where the practicalities of good service and fresh food take precedence, ensuring a reliable spot for a satisfying meal.

Stopped for lunch at Ludlow on way back from holiday. This place was recommended for lunch. It was busy but managed to get a table. Plenty to choose from on the menu for lunch. I had jacket potato with cheese and beans. A bit of wait but I didn't mind because it was worth the wait. Especially because it was oven baked and not microwaved. Plus hot. I didn't have a cake but they were very sizeable tasty looking ones.

Lots of lovely places in Ludlow, this one is not in the top 10. It’s a bit more of a canteen than a quaint cafe. The foods OK but not generous. We couldn’t get in anywhere else as they all required pre booking. The staff were helpful.

A group of us had afternoon tea at the Buttery as a surprise birthday treat for a couple of our friends. Our table was laid with delicate chinaware and pretty flowery napkins. We were presented with a three tier cake stand with a selection of sandwiches on the top plates, quiche and sausage rolls on the middle and slices of Victoria sponge, coffee cake and brownies on the bottom. There was also a separate plate with scones, butter, jam and clotted cream. Everything was delicious and plentiful, all served with pots of tea in china teapots. At £14.99 a head, I would certainly return if I was in the area.

Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely view of the castle walls if you get a seat by the window. Not much choice if you are vegan, but you can have a bowl of salad. We went there because I'd read in the reviews that it did a roast dinner on Sundays, which would have been ideal for my friend. Actually they have now stopped doing that. They did though have a beef or vegetable lasagne option, so there was an opportunity for a main meal for him rather than just a sandwich.

We popped in here for something quick to eat. I only ordered the soup and my companion the special of the day - fish goujons. We should have known what was going to happen when we paid before being served. They took 25 minutes to serve us and when the food came my soup was cold. We did not receive an apology for the late service.two families came in after us but we reserved before us. When we complained about the soup again no apology instead I was told off for not letting them take it away. I concluded it was not worth the risk. They took 25 mins to heat some soup and they did not even do that I could not risk being made to wait longer for them to have another go. No apologies in this case the customer was always wrong. Avoid this place unless you have loads of time to kill.

My partner and I visited today around 15.40 this afternoon (Sunday 11th February 2024) we where ignored by the girl behind the counter when we entered, until we spoke to her and asked if they where still serving drinks. she asked someone out the back and they eventually said they where. She didn't look to happy with the kitchens answer. We said we would have takeaway tea if that was easier, her tune changed then and she was more polite and made us drinks, however, we left feeling as welcome as a fart in a lift. We appreciate it was almost closing time but there was still customers sat at two of the tables eating. The couple that came in after us appeared unhappy with the service they received as they wanted to sit in, they were told they could only have takeout ... Maybe you should advertise this and stipulate that customers can only have take out after a certain time. If you wanted to be closed up by 4 then you should have the "we are closed " sign displayed. I'm sure in other circumstances this is a lovely cafe however the managers should maybe have a chat with the staff about customers service!!!

We called in for a hot drink and snack Mid morning. Very well organised and friendly staff. While we waited at the door to be seated we could see the staff wiping the tables and chairs clean. The only table free seated 6 and we were only two but not a problem. I had a latte and a toasted tea cake and my husband had a pot of tea. (Got 3 cups worth) and a bacon sandwich. As we were eating a family of 6 came in so we volunteered to move to a table for 2 that had become vacant. I thought the service was excellent and it was quite busy but everyone was served quickly. As we got up to leave I put a tip in the box on the counter and told them they were doing a great job. A lady said thank you it was nice to hear. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to say thank you when a lot of people are quick to say negative things. We are planning to pop back before our holiday ends.

The Castle Ludge Buttery is in Castle Square near the entrance to Ludlow Castle. On the morning we visited it was uite busy with most tables occupied. We ordered Lattes , which were good, but not exceptional. The problem was the noise level made worse by several excited young children. Although sitting fairly close to each other we were scarcely able to have a conversation because of the background noise which is not helped by the fairly low ceiling. When I commented as we left, I was told that they planned a makeover to try and reduce the noise in the cafe.

Possibly a variation on the theme of afternoon tea. Only this includes cooked food portions such as pasta dish & a burger plus fries. Followed by cake, biscuit, trifle & milk shake. Served on a large wooden bench with two shelves and set out for two to share. I understand its only served at certain times (Friday I think, but check with the premises) & the menu will change with the seasons, including a special for Christmas which I think will be the 3 fridays in December. That is certainly on my calendar. Not licensed but you can take your own booze. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It's different, give it a try.

Popped in for lunch. I had breakfast, and for £8.20 I’d expect and outstanding one. It wasn’t. Very small. Paid extra for a local sausage. Not up to much. Daughters cheese and tomato toastie tasted of nothing. Tasteless cheese. £25 for a tea, a juice, 2 toastier, breakfast and a latte!! London prices. Waitress brought drinks over and just left the drinks in the tray. Didn’t take off tray and serve properly. Basic errors. Shall not return.

After a wedding on Thursday at the castle we enjoyed a bacon, Brie and cranberry panini. Expected just a small panini. Happily served a large one! Two extremely happy people who were very hungry at the time! :)

We called here for a ‘coffee & cake’ stop before walking back. It is a handy location (next to Castle Entrance/Exit), and that certainly catches the trade. However nothing out of the ordinary, coffee was below average, the cake was offered with cream, I declined but wished I hadn’t as it was really quite dry.

Had bacon, brie and cranberry panini-side salad and coleslaw-for light lunch-super. Returned later for coffee+ take away sausage roll to eat on the way home. Enjoyed.

This is unfortunately typical of an establishment close to a major tourist feature which relies on its location to extract the tourist dollar for very little in return and is sadly not typical of the excellent catering in Ludlow in general. Pot of tea for two with one tea bag. Weak and watery. The extra person is therefore charged for water!! Chicken sandwich with stuffing and cranberry: processed ultra thin slice of ‘chicken’ whose volume was so insignificant that this should have been titled a “cranberry and stuffing” sandwich. Person on the next table also aghast as the one tea bag treatment. While not unfriendly, the girl behind the counter was formal and unhelpful. Lesson learned!!

Visited this lovely country pub following recommendations from neighbours. The menu is small but full of home made dishes. As a group of 4 we enjoyed chicken and Stilton pie and vegetables, gammon, sweetcorn, chips and pineapple, chilli con carne and a really meaty pork chop, chips and peas. Really good home cooked food so much better than the normal pub grub. It also means the menu changes regularly. Sensibly priced making eating out a pleasure. Desserts just had to be tried. The whisky bread and butter pudding was suitably named and the apple crumble with custard was a winner too. The Sunday roast advertised at £9.30 will have to be tried another weekend. Delicious home cooked food is always so much better than bought in dishes. We praised the chef and June for a lovely warm welcome and a great meal.

The cafe is efficiently run and we enjoyed the rooftop seating in the sun today. Unfortunately the scone was stale. Quite a shocker for me! What a shame :(

Sort of stumbled across this lovely pub, last Saturday, whilst looking for somewhere dog-friendly to eat. We were welcomed in, and the food was excellent.

I must echo the views of others. A really lovely restaurant spoiled by sparrows landing on the the table where cakes are being cut and on uncleared tables. Very unhygienic - there must be a way to stop them coming into the tearooms. Never encountered it anywhere else. Health and safety would have a field day!
