Our first visit today and definitely won't be the last... A real gem of a pub. The roast dinners were beautiful - tasty, veg cooked perfectly, huge crispy Yorkshire puds and lots of meat. The service was great - polite, friendly and professional. Bathrooms were clean. Easy to park. Thank you, will definitely be back again!

We stayed for two nights at the pubs campsite and ate in the restaurant on both nights, having stayed here last year. The reception and friendliness of the staff, particularly Josh and Harry could not be faulted, even opening up in the morning so I could get on to the wi-fi and out of the rain to make an important booking. The food was really good and the price of the campsite was very reasonable. The facilities are basic but very clean and more than adequate. We will definitely stay here in future. Handily placed for Ulleskelf and Selby train stations for train trips to York (and beyond).

We arrived at an empty carpark on a Saturday night. That should have told us something! We were greeted at the bar by a nice young man. We were told we couldn't order the curry as they had run out at lunchtime, and there was no teriyaki beef either. Poor start to our evening. We ordered our starter of spring rolls, chicken tenders & garlic mushrooms. We waited longer than I would have expected for an empty pub. The starters were very nice and good-sized portions, too. Unfortunately, our main course took another 30 minutes to arrive. The fish was pathetically thin and small, my steak and ale pie had no ale in it, just very watery gravy although there was plenty of meat and it was tender. My friend had to ask for some bbq sauce for her hunters chicken. The chips were luke warm, and the peas were dried out bullets! We were told we couldn't order a dessert as the chef had had to leave for an emergency! Don't treat your customers like idiots! It was 9.45, and the chef didn't want to work any later! Overall, it was a very disappointing evening food wise. This is the 2nd time we have been to this pub, and we will not be returning. They gave the same excuse regarding the chef. Would not recommend.

Amazing Sunday Roast at the Castle. Booked online, really easy to book. We were not disappointed the restaurant is beautiful set with cosy tables. The food, just outstanding we all had different courses pork belly, roast beef and chicken. One of the best roasts I’ve eaten in some time. We will be making this a regular visit

Ultimately it’s the food. You can forgive a lot but personally I want feeding with warm and yummy food. Whoever’s cooking isn’t eating their food. Not very pleasant. A chef needs to be passionate and care about what they’re sending out. Even a fish finger butty can be incredible. Sadly … not my experience

What a great night we had at the Castle Inn. Absolutely loved the Yorkshire Tapas, every dish came out beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Added bonus was the fabulous singer 'Elvis' Also a big shout out to our lovely waiter, maybe Josh but can't be sure, but he was great. A recently taken over, beautifully refurbed country pub and restaurant in Cawood, south of York, the Castle Inn is an absolute pleasure to visit. The new owner has a fabulous eye for style and detail, even down to the table numbers and table 'reserved' signs! The restaurant exudes a welcoming, warm country-pub vibe, with subtle fabrics and furnishings and the all-important low-lighting to create the perfect dining ambience. Spoilt for choice by the new Yorkshire tapas menu, we opted on our first visit for the Beef & Onion Stew with Dumplings, the Venison Scotch Egg with wholegrain mustard dip (this is surely going to be one of THE best-sellers?!), Half Pint Prawns in a Brandy Yoghurt Marie Rose Sauce with Anchovy Toast and the Fish, Chips & Mushy Peas. Completely stuffed by the end, having shared and eaten every morsel—and not by nature dessert people—we were tempted to try a Seasonal Crumble (on this occasion, winter berries) and Custard and the Yorkshire Pudding with Stewed Rhubarb and Clotted Cream. WOW! The puds almost out-shone the mains! Delicious flavours, beautifully cooked and presented, with the dishes coming as and when ready, meant we could dine in leisurely fashion, enjoy our drinks and each dish as it came, without feeling remotely rushed as you so often do in restaurants where they can't seem to wait to get your table back. This is definitely tapas with a Yorkshire topping! Highly recommended, and so much so, we're booked to return next week and are already arguing over which dishes to choose next!

Decided to head to the Castle for their Burger night this evening and have to say we were extremely disappointed. When we moved to Cawood a few years ago I can remember being so impressed with the quality of the food, in particular the burgers were amazing and the skinny fries were the best chips I had ever had! We haven’t been to the Castle for a while but I was craving the crispy skinny fries that I have had previously so decided to head down to the burger night. After waiting over 45 minutes for the food to arrive I was hugely disappointment to be greeted with what appeared to be a bowl of oven cooked skin on fries accompanying my burger…the chips looked remarkably like the frozen skin on fries I buy from Aldi! My two children had the cheese burger meal and one had the chicken strips. Again I was shocked at what came out compared to what we have had previously. The burger meal came with a sorry looking burger in a tiny bun alongside a glut of ‘oven chips’ no beans/peas to accompany (we were told they have ran out of peas?!) Likewise, the once freshly battered chicken goujons appear to have been replaced with oven cooked chicken strips that looked like they had also come from an oven. My husband went for the wild boar burger, he said it was burnt. He asked for normal chips but what came out was another disappointing bowl of oven cooked chips exactly the same as the ‘skinny fries’ I had ordered, not the triple cooked Chucky chips the Castle used to serve up in its better days. To top it off we asked for a side of Onion rings, again I remember these being beautifully battered , light and crispy today we were greeted with a bowl of burnt onion rings swimming in fat, they were terrible. I am honestly so disappointed at the hugely noticeable change in chef/quality of products that the Castle appear to be serving up. We won’t be going back any time soon, unless you revert back to your previously delicious and well cooked menu!

A very busy country inn with a large conservatory restaurant and quirky bar. We booked dinner with friends. Although the restaurant was very busy as was the bar the food was served fairly promptly and was piping hot for both starter and main courses. Felt that more vegetables were needed but other than that the food was tasty on all courses. Would certainly revisit when next in area as menu was quite extensive

Went for family birthday 3 couples and 5 year old. We have been to The Castle lots but probably won't be going back. It took over 10 minutes before we were asked about drinks. Ordered starters and mains which took over 2 hours to cook and serve. Never once were we asked if food was ok between order and delivery. Frankly the speed of delivery of 7 dishes was really slow almost painful to watch. We asked fornthe glasses to be cleared, the lad cleared maybe 5 glasses then went to another table. We ended up moving the glasses that remained onto the window sill and the glasses left I moved to another table myself to give us room. We are not big drinkers, we had 2 rounds of drinks so these were wine glasses, water glasses and empty drink glasses just left on the table. For mains they forgot the onion rings and had to go and cook them which arrived almost 3/4 through the meal. Luckily a new waitress arrived at 3pm and she was organised and did everything in half the time otherwise we would have simply given up and had pudding at home. I had asked for a bloody Mary but apparently under new management they do not make those or pineapple juice and lemonade. Forget new management, start again, train staff.

Have been to castle inn on numerous occasions but today was very disappointing we came for Sunday lunch, only one of us wanted Sunday lunch and my partner preffered something else . We were informed that they had ran out of the sausage and mash, had ran out of the classic burger, so he had to pick fish and chips which we were informed was the last one as they had run out of that . When it arrived the chips were very crispy and stale , my Sunday lunch was disappointing I chose castle trio for the price of 18.00 pound it consisted of 3 thin slices of pork loin, beef, gammon 2 stale roast potatoes, pickled red cabbage one small portion of broccoli, one small portion of carrot/swede mash, courgette, leek, frozen pea mix, and a very crispy Yorkshire pudding with no flavour. We came here last year and the food was excellent traditional Sunday lunch with fresh seasonal vegetables but not this time. The price for yesterdays disappointing visit of £58 for two people 2 drinks two lunches and 2 puddings we won’t be eating here again .

Tripadvisor Dear lozWoof, Thank you for letting us know you want to edit your review of The Castle Inn Restaurant & Country Pub. Your review has been removed. To make it easier for you to resubmit the review, we included a copy of your original text below. Thanks for being part of the Tripadvisor community! Best Regards, Tripadvisor Support Team Just not quite up to its usual standard. Been coming here for years. Stayed in the camping field which is great. Called in the pub for a drink Friday and both had coors. Was flat and not nice at all so only stayed for one. Was a little better Saturday. We Ate in the restaurant Saturday night. Service was ok but not brilliant and again not as good as usual although all staff very friendly. Just lacking finesse and basics and having someone being in charge which there doesn't seem to be. Ie empty glasses left on our table for the duration of our meal. Side plates from our starters not removed so our table for two was very cramped. No salt in the salt pot so had to fetch one from another table. The Starters were both excellent. We Had garlic mushrooms and crayfish cocktail. Mains just average. My steak was lovely although the grilled tomatoes and mushrooms consisted of 2 tiny cherry tomatoes and half a mushroom. Husbands gammon was very thin and poor quality. Was over cooked making it dry. The grills are advertised as having tossed side salad. Not sure if it was because we had the 2 steaks and bottle of wine deal but the salad was just a tiny bit of watercress. Just not up to it's usual excellent standards sadly.

Went out to dinner on a Friday night. Tried booking online but only managed to book an outdoor (non-heated area) seat because of their booking system. However, less than 3 minutes after booking online a lovely women rang and said she'd moved the booking indoors as outside has no heating. Which was a fantastic start. Everything got better after that. The pub is very dog friendly in the bar area, and a number of well behaved dogs came and went during the meal. All the staff were lovely. The waiter and waitress (I missed their names) were fantastic. They kept going above and beyond to make all the customers happy. They were also super friendly without it feeling forced, and able to laugh and joke with customers too. The food was incredible. It all looked home made and portion sizes were good for the price. The Yorkshire pudding and Swale dale sausage was delicious, with the Yorkshire pudding having a soft bottom and sides and a crispy edge/top without being burnt or undercooked anywhere. The desserts were even better than the main cause. The lemon meringue pie was lovely, a good contrast between the sweet meringue and tart curd. However, the sticky toffee pudding was absolutely faultless. The texture was perfect, it melted in your mouth with the toffee sauce a great addition. This place should definitely by on your list to visit if you're near Selby, you won't be disappointed.

Visited for dinner during our stay in a near by village. The food was delicious and so fresh. Locally sourced produce which is always a winner. More than ample portions also. Service was excellent with friendly and accommodating staff. Would thoroughly recommend a visit

The food was lovely- we shared starters, had mains and shared deserts! Tempura prawns, Gammon and sticky toffee were all stand out options in my opinion. I left an answer phone message to request a highchair which was picked up- thank you! But what really...

We took a bit of a detour from our journey South to visit The Hidden Tearoom, and what a great choice it was! So many delicious homemade goodies and a very warm welcome from Edi. The Scone-wiches (cheese scone with bacon, onion marmalade, cream cheese and salad) were fabulous and there were too many lovely cakes and puddings to choose from. Highly recommended.

A regular stop off whenever we’re in Selby. The food is fantastic whether it’s a quick snack, full on Sunday lunch or special occasion. Mat, Gemma, Di, Chaba & all the staff are polite, respectful and… efficient. An enjoyable experience. Can’t recommend highly enough.

We have eaten here with friends 4 times over the last 2 years, but it has never really impressed us. The food is OK, but not really worth the cost. The chips were hard and dry, which I don't understand as they are supposed to be home made! Also, the drinks have always been expensive, but £4.55 for 1 pint and one half pint of lime and soda is ridiculous. The most we have ever paid in the past is £3, but often less than that!!
