Food ok, however all times I have eaten here were at lunch time and never been particularly busy. Problem is food takes so long to arrive every time. At least 30 minute wait all times I have been and never made aware of any wait times when ordering so you assume there isn’t a particularly long wait. I understand there may not have been a wait on food when we ordered but over 30 minutes is a very long time to wait for light bite meals when pub is not busy, so it would be nice if a staff member came and told you there is now a wait etc. Last time I visited it was a 40 minute wait with no acknowledgment of this by any servers.

Terrible food!! The lasagna had chewy cheese and was inedible! The castle burger was dripping in so much fat that the bottom bun was like a fat sponge! Very disappointing as advertised as the oldest pub on the island….well the food was certainly old and from another time warp!! The bar girl was friendly and embarrassed by the food she served which was a positive! Advice is, don’t go!!

Pure quality value for money meal. Alls meals half price, first Monday of the month. One of the oldest pubs on the Island, 16th Century. Family friendly, couples and solo visits. Lovely varied menu or you can just pop in for a drink. Well run, quality professional management and hard working staff in the kitchen and front of house. Nice secluded beer garden. Well worth a regular visit. 😀👍

While visiting the Isle of Wight this week we stopped by the Castle Inn and enjoyed a lovely meal (I would highly recommend the macaroni cheese and the lasagna!!) We went for the light bites which were a really good size and full of flavour! great lay out, spacious, cozy and amazing food and staff! We felt very welcomed and had a great time! Thank you to all the Castle team! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We are back again visiting the island and again enjoyed a lovely meal at the Castle! A bit different this year due to covid but the team are amazing... Everything in place as it should be and again, the food was the best! This time we had the Castle burger and Nachos with Chilli Highly recommended!

Lovely Sunday roast lunch. Very tender, tasty pork and beef with all the trimmings, lots of fresh vegetables AND cauliflower cheese! Very large portions, couldn't fault it, enjoyed it very much. Staff were more than helpful, efficient and friendly, we will definitely be back, thankyou.

We stayed just around the corner from this pub so it became our nightly stop for a few drinks after a long day, and we ate here once as well.The staff are very friendly and make you feel at ease and at home as soon as you walk through the door. There are sufficient covid restrictions in place and there is a call bell system on the table for you to order, or request the bill. On the day we ate, we had a selection of foods. I had the garlic chickens and chorizo tagliatelle, my MIL had the lasagna, my wife had the southern fried chicken burger and my FIL had liver and bacon. The portion sizes were amazing, and the food was so tasty . We all finished our meals and left very satisfied. Excellent value for money as well! When we return to the IOW we will definitely come again and advise anyone staying in Newport to pop in and give this place a try!

We sat in the garden, was a bit skeptical on first impressions but pleasantly surprised. Good pub grub, big portions and friendly staff.

With the next step of lockdown easing approaching with eating in doors again, I though it high time I left our review from our visit between previous lockdowns. I have to say the staff coped really well with the restrictions – table service only, signing in etc. All the staff and the landlord were really friendly and helpful, you could tell they were smiling at you under the masks. The food is excellent – really good honest pub food; large portions. The battered fish and chips are amazing! We'll definitely visit again next time we're on the Island. David and Gillian.

Popped in tonight for a quick drink before getting the bus home. Love this place. Great atmosphere and great choice of drinks. It's all table service now but that seemed to actually make the experience even better. Best pub in Newport. Please visit. You will not be disappointed

Friendly staff and very tasty food. We were seated in the area at the back which is normally for private events. The call button to attract staff attention worked well.

Stayed in Newport in October, I guess out of season and many restaurants open only on weekends.So went for dinner in this pub.Premises are Covid safe, one way system.Staff was friendly. I ordered Martini bianco for aperitif but waitress wasn’t sure if any left, then she brought one but I am not sure if it was Martini, tasted not good.My husband ordered cod, fish was fresh. My Burger was bit burned, dry, but chips were nice, on the whole dinner went alright.

Really great home made chicken and veg pie big helpings really lovely staff one fault they use cheap sausages but this can be forgiven when you get one of their amazing desserts. I would definatly go back and encourage you to try it. Social distanceing has been done really well xxx

We luckily stayed near by and thought we would try it.Excellent choice! Food was lovely and very generous portions given. The owner and all his staff are lovely and adhere to covid rules. Tables are spaced out, hand gel provided and a buzzer on the table to call staff if you need them.Would definatley recommend eating here. Good food, service and surroundings. This pub has a lot of history associated with Carisbrooke castle too.

Went to the Castle last night - liked it that the staff had masks on. Met by a lovely member of staff at the door who took a contact number as they should. ( I have to say I have been to other restaurants and no details have been taken!) All food was great nice and hot and just the right size. I can recommend the fish pie! All the staff were most polite, cheery and helpful! Will definitely be returning x

When visiting newport decided to go to the pub for dinner. It was quite loud but sat outside which was okay. The service was good and staff was friendly, the portion size was quite big for the money which was nice Had a good stay

Went on Sunday night after a long ride just before the kitchen closed. Foods were delicious and portions were big. The pub has a relax feeling and very comfy. Service was good too.

Popular local pub with good range of well cooked food. Good service, proper tracking and social distancing. We liked their ales and cider. Dog friendly. Relaxing. Would have gone there every night if we could have but was packed for Rishis Dishes Days.

I went to lunch there with my mother. Service good, food good, clientele terrible. A group of regulars were initially chatting, but the language was extremely offensive and twice the bar staff asked them to quieten down. Such a shame it ruined our lunch

Cannot recommend highly enough. The food is fab and the staff are friendly. They were full but managed to fit us in despite us being a family of 12. Was by far the best meal we had on the IOW and no doubt we will go back the next time we visit even if we don’t stay in Newport.

Nice lunch after a funeral. Track and trace details taken. No shade in outside area so only concern was that it was too hot outside to sit comfortably. Food was good, plentiful and prompt. Staff very attentive.

The staff were very welcoming to us as tourists and had the covid precautions well thought through , good drinks ( stowford cider and a local ale) and good pub food . Really enjoyed the visit so came back next day too.

Wow there done a lot of work when its was shut loving it. And the food was Fabulous well presented and taste great. The guys have worked so hard in this place. The service is fantastic Friendly staff. Can't wait for our next visit

We had a really lovely meal at The Castle Inn. Simon, the Landlord, was very welcoming, even in these strange times, and the food was great. The menu had plenty to choose from - each of us had something different (tagliatelle, hunters chicken, 6oz steak and liver & bacon) and the portions were huge - even managed to stump my husband! The only one negative is that it is too far away to be our local! And the Pink Mermaid gin was great too!

First lunch out in a long time and it didn’t disappoint, the chicken and chorizo tagliatelle was delicious, social distancing and safety measures followed at all times and constant cleaning from the staff - great job!

Came here on the 4th July, first day of opening. Social distancing measures in place, staff work PPE and now table service. Very friendly staff, attentive, food was lovely. Will be returning.

My fiance and i popped in on Saturday evening for dinner. The staff were incredibly helpful and attentive. They made us feel welcomed and nothing was too much bother, which given we are just out of lock down was really nice. The food tasted and looked great, with the portion sizes easily able to feed 2 people let alone one. I would recommend to anybody visiting Newport to include this on their itinerary.

Today is 13/72020. It is Covid 19 season and lockdown is relaxed. We can eat in pubs and stuff, but must respect social distancing. I ate a 10oz rump steak, rare, with chips, peas, tomato and onion rings. I ordered peppercorn sauce washed down with a beautiful Malbec. It was delicious. Absolute compliments to the chef. I cannot recommend The Castle Inn highly enough. In the current situation this pub offers honest grub at honest prices. Thank you so much for a delicious meal.

Today we visited the Castle Inn as our first foray into a pub following the re-opening after lockdown. We had a very warm welcome from the owner/manager, who carefully explained all the measures being taken to promote a safe and pleasant experience for customers and staff. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and sanitised at every possible point of contact, including menus and all tableware. Our food and drinks were served at the table and we enjoyed very reasonably priced and tasty lunches. A very enjoyable experience, and we look forward to returning soon.

We visited here one Sunday during a short winter break to IOW. Staying in Sandown we caught the local bus to Newport for a look round.Low ceilings, old flagstones and a very large open fire give a very welcoming atmosphere. It’s a very old pub with a traditional local feel but also does meals.We didn’t eat but the meals did look wonderful – very large portionsIf this place was local to us, it would be a place we’d go to regularly for drinks and the occasional meal.

What can i say...... service great food is just unbelievable.... will certainly be reccomending the steak and the peppercorn sauce and you will be certainly seeing me again with the family.... big thumbs up from me

We stopped in here for drinks on our walk between Carisbrooke Castle and Newport. Quite a large pub. Nice toilets. Reasonable selection of beers.

Ordered Sunday roast dinner, and salmon and prawn linquine in garlic cream and herb sauce. Both superb and really hot. Full up but couldn't resist lemon cheesecake, and cookie dough stack filled with ice cream. The homemade deserts were fantastic. Wish I had taken pictures. They tasted as good as they looked.. Excellent service. Thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

Had Valentines dinner here on night of 15th February. Good atmosphere, Excellent food and attentive friendly staff. If you haven't yet been here would recommend you try it out....you wont be disappointed.!!

held a party at the castle in on friday night and was so so anxious! the staff put me at ease continuously, made sure everything was taken care of and my needs catered for. all my guests were complimenting the food and hospitality of the staff. would highly recommend this venue!

Great night spent at the Castle Inn for our Work's Christmas Party. We reserved the stable bar at the back of the pub which was perfect for a group of our size (35). We got served drinks very quickly and the service throughout the evening was very good. Baring in mind how busy the pub was on this evening due to being over the festive period, the food was of a good standard. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and if you will have us we will definitely come back next year!

i have been very remiss in not writing earlier and for this I apologise. We live on the island, close to Newport and we have visited the Castle a number of times in the last 3 months. We have experienced Sunday roasts, pub lunches and excellent real ales.We also visited during the Beer and Bus weekend where, despite the large crowd, we were served in quick time by cheerful staff AND the ales were superb. In all, if you want a good meal and you like real ales and a pleasant surrounding, the Castle is the one for you. The reason for writing today is that we want to take a friend out for a meal were looking for somewhere to go. While the Isle of Wight is truly endowed with lovely pubs, we find ourselves coming back the Castle again and again, so this is where will will take our friend for a meal.

By far the most beautiful pub I have ever been too, the staff are wonderfully friendly and very knowledgeable about the history of the building, the food is next to none. Would highly recommend this little hidden gem!

Me and my friend went to the castle having eaten there before and we were extremely happy with our food! Yeh we had to wait a long time for our food but we definitely believe it was definitely worth the wait! The food was hot and it stayed hot as it was on a hot plate! We will definitely be eating here a lot more! The atmosphere was calm and wasn’t too loud or busy, the waiter asked if our food was ok and we said it was amazing. It was amazing and we also had a couple of beers with our dinner and the beers were as cold as they should be and the lady behind the bar was very friendly! Couldn’t rate this pub any better even if I tried!

Me and a few friends from work managed to get a table together. The girls behind the bar were really pleasant. Happy, smiley faces. Beer was good and clean, with a good range of products.

This pub was just behind the Travelodge, where I stayed 3 nights, so it was where I nipped for my dinner the night I arrived. Liked it so much I had dinner there the next 2 nights as well. I drank in several pubs in Newport, but, along with the Waverley at Carisbrooke, this remained my favourite. Frankly, they know what they're doing.

Have eaten here several times over the past few months and again the food, service and atmosphere was as good as ever. If you tried it before the new owners took over and didn’t like it then try it again you won’t be disappointed.

We have visited a few times now in large numbers. Each time the service and atmosphere have been excellent. The food is delicious and very good value with many homemade dishes on the menu and it’s also served hot. The £6.75 steak or gammon Friday night deal is a must !! I would definitely recommend.

The Castle Inn is by far the best pub on the Isle of Wight to eat at. The food and service is amazing. The food is always out in a quick amount of time with nothing to fault and portion sizes are really good. The staff always go out of their way to ensure everything is the way that you want it. Can’t fault the place. Would definitely recommend to anyone who are both visiting the island or who live here!

I visited with a group of 26 people on 28 September. We booked the Stable Bar for a private dinner event. The service was faultless and the food very good. Everyone in the group had a thoroughly good time and would all recommend the Castle Inn. Thank you to Simon, Liam and the team for a great evening.

The Castle has been my local pub for many years. The new management has turned it into a home from home. Always a friendly welcome. The food has really been taken up a few notches. Their specials are always worth a try. Beautifully presented, tasty and generous portions. Service is spot on too. Often where I stop after work for dinner and a G&t.; Highly recommended!

We were staying on the Island for a few days in Newport, & went out on the Saturday for a look around. It was a Hot Day & we fancied a Drink, when we come across The Castle Inn. What a find ! Looks ok from the Outside, but inside, Wow ! There is a Glass Panel where an Old Staircase would have gone upstairs & the Old Brickwork of when King Charles 1st was on the Throne. Black Beams with Twinkling Fairy Lights, a Nice Bar, Friendly Staff & a Sun Trap of a Rear Garden. With lovely Sandwiches & a Good Ale, this is 1 place to to Visit, Cheers !

Good courteous service, dog friendly, simple pub grub, olde worlde pub. Slap bang in town centre, you can park right outside on the High St itself (if spaces - we went on Sunday evening so all shops shut but otherwise I expect hard to park right outside, but there's plenty public car parks nearby n.b. parking right outside is pay and display). Good burger meals, fine for simple eating pub grub. Polite staff.

Pop in for sunday lunch and it was fantastic cook perfect and taste delicious and had the Belgium waffles with ice cream and chocolate sauce which was delicious and beautifully presented. The place is full of Character and the service was brilliant lovely Garden.

My daughter and I ate in the Castle last night, after seeing so many people raving about the food. We were not disappointed; if I’m honest we are quite harsh critics when it comes to food - so I’m gobsmacked we can’t find anything to say other than how bloody amazing it was.

I had always wondered what the Castle Inn, Newport was like. With a public house standing on that site since 1550, it looked to have history as well as charm going for it.

Service was just right... timely but not invasive or pushy. Food was delicious though the jacket potatoes could have been hotter. Seating very cozy and well spaced. Would definitely return.

Thanks to team at the Castle Inn, super food and drink but even better hospitality. Family run pub, that became our second home. Live music and breakfast in the morning... what more could you want. Great job guys.

We visited the castle for a birthday meal with am small group. On arrival Simon was very attentive and ensured we were happy with our table and the layout, he explained there was a limited menu due to the kitchen refit. The food arrived well presented with very generous portions. All the group commented on how lovely the food was and how well the place has changed for the better.

Went for lunch with my partner and it was delicious. We had the scampi and it tasted really fresh, and even tho my fussy partner wanted too change a few things on his meal they did so with no trouble at all..love the new garden area very welcoming. Staff very friendly and helpful would definitly recommend

Dropped in late tonight for 1st time on the off chance they were still serving and Simon welcomed us in & gave us both a hearty well cooked fresh meal.

One of the best pubs on the island, very family friendly and the owners welcome you as ther have known you for years!!!! It’s a great place to enjoy a night out with friends or family, they always cater to your needs and they are always happy to help with anything, I really do recommend this place, you will not regret it!!!

A room out the back which has own bar. Good size. Great food even making me a special glutten free cottage pie which was delicious. Chips r yummy. Our order for 8 meals came quickly and piping hot. Reasonably priced. Friendly helpful staff. Main bar has good atmosphere and character. 'well impressed'

I have been to the Castle Inn several times over the past twenty years and I have never been disappointed. The service is outstanding and friendly, accompanied with a genuine smile. The food is probably the best I have ever had on the Island. If your visiting? Definitely go for lunch or dinner, you will be pleased you did.

Just had the pie of the day absolutely amazing couldn’t fault it well cooked had to wait a little while but so worth it barmaid couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly

Low ceilings great local beer. Helpful staff and good food. Best bit no WiFi ! A sign says act like its 1990 and have a chat. We had lasagne, sausage and mash and hunters chicken. All of these are pretty staple BUT they did it really well. The chip were double cooked, the gravy had red wine added to give an extra kick. The lasagne was a lighter smaller portion , you had a choice, which was great (they had this for several items) the salad had basaltic drizzle over it. All great little touches that make this so much better than “pub grub” price wasn’t too bad either. If your visiting you can’t go wrong here.

We were there for a family birthday and I was presently surprised how busy it was. The lovely young ladies that served us were very pleasant helpfully hard-working and a credit to themselves. There was 16 of us and the food was all served up together as for me and the people around me it was all good. I intend to go back again this week and hope the steak pie is on.

We went for drinksonly, live music going on, fab band. Friendly locals and staff, will definitely go back.

Absolutely amazing, from the friendlyness of both owners to the food itself was a great evening. Liam the head chef an owner introduced himself after are meal and personally asked us how everything was and took Criticism well from other customers around us. Simon the other owner personally checked up on us and sat us to the table. The food was amazing just have to check their Facebook page to see the taster menu they put on. Which gave me and my girlfriend a wonderful night. A great venue with traditional feels. The castle is on the up since these new owners have come in. Will be returning very soon.

Popped in for a bite after walking the dog. Dogs are welcome and we were both greeted by happy friendly bar staff. Food was really good and i will certainly be back with friends!

Popped in on the off chance, greeted and given a choice of tables. Great olde world pub, low ceilings and open fire. Food arrived in good time, wifes light bite of sausage and mash was very good, my lamb curry was nice but more a stew than curry, that being said it was enjoyable. After eating we moved to couch next to open fire, great atmosphere. Left when 3 piece band arrived, bit loud for our liking in a small pub more suited to an acoustic guitar duo.

Disappointed with the size of the portions curry served in a tiny bowl with just a small amount of rice not enough for a child partner had the cottage pie once again served in a tiny dish very poor value for money desert was £4.95 for again a tiny crumble with just a jug of custard apart from food a nice old fashioned pub

After reading lots of great reviews about the Castle we went in one evening. Stunning lovely warm log fires. Nice choice on the menu and appropriate prices. We couldn't see where it said what the soup or pie was anywhere so had steak. Great quality and presentation however overcooked for us both. Perfect sized meal for us. I was overcharged and the lady behind the bar wasn't intrested in the mistake, she refunded me the overcharge. The young girls waiting were very friendly and helpful, lady behind bar - not so much. We enjoyed the visit overall and would recommend.

We had the Valentines 7 course taster menu. Couldn't have been better for our first meal here. All dishes were well thought out and beautifully presented and most importantly, were all delicious. Congratulations to the chef and all the staff.

Ate at the castle and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere, their new menu has plenty of choice and is really good quality, so nice to warm by the log fire whilst waiting for our food, was not disappointed, will be back

Me and my dad came to the Castle Inn to initially have a Steak. But we decided to have a burger instead! One if the nicest chicken burgers I’ve ever had to date! Will definitely be coming back again! The only downside was the price of the food at the CastleInn! If the price was lower then me and my dad would definitely come again!

I found this little gem on my first night..... A lovely, olde worldwide pub. I saw at least 4 fire places... From a full-on walk in one, to a genuine ancient one, with space either side for kettles. Low beams.. a truly olde pub, dating back centuries. Simon, the current landlord is a very experienced landlord... And a decent bloke. A few regulars and on the island, everyone is friendly. I really loved the ambiance... Real wood fires, low beams, friendly landlord and locals and all round decent place

New owner told us he was a trained chef and that the evening roast dinner would be fresh, ie not left over from lunchtime. Beef could have been used to sole my shoes and vegetables under cooked. won't go there again

The Castle Inn is one of the oldest if not the oldest on the Isle of Wight. The New team which have just taken over have breathed a new lease of life into the Inn. Great choice of ales ,lagers ,wines and Spirits aaahhhh ( did i not mention its the most haunted )we had our xmas get together x18 ,x 3 course meal .and were treated as one if the family .the food was superb .lashings and lashings .off ginger aIe not ...would like to say a massive thank you too Simon (Landlord ) Liam (Head Chef)and there team for the new memories. Ps ..THE LAMB WAS AMAZING grt menu choice.

We stopped here for lunch and never expected the quality of service and food we received, my family and I discussed the new menu offerings that the new professional managers had to offer which were great, their efforts did no go unnoticed, I even had a hand carved swan into the Apple on my ploughmans lunch (very impressive) anyway aside from that it was a total thumbs up from me and my family to which we plan to revisit before the new year for their evening delights.

Have been visiting the Castle Inn through many iterations over many years. It now seems closer to its old self. The menu is good with half portions available - not inexpensive but good quality and value. The atmosphere has improved with the second fireplace now operating. Warm throughout on a cold day. Need a website to offer details and menu.

Booked in for Christmas party what a night the food was brilliant 10 times better than last year very tasty bar service excellent the band made our nights will definitely book again next year thank you guys

Came here last year for works Xmas party and the food was excellent so rebooked for the same this year. Quite disappointed!! Food was nowhere near as good including choice. Last year I had beef which was beautiful, thickly cut and three large slices. This year no beef only lamb steak ( for Xmas???) and the turkey was two very thin pieces!! Last years homemade pate was fantastic this not even an option!!
