We stayed for the weekend and ate there for every meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner. There was a great selection of good, straightforward, well cooked and delicious food efficiently served by friendly helpful folk. There was a delightfully friendly atmosphere throughout the whole of our stay. We will definitely be visiting again, the sooner then better!

Ate one evening recently as a walk up. Had Chicken Tandoori , with rice. Also steak n ale pie. Food way basic, and not great quality. Pie was full of air, curry was mainly sauce, little meat. Took almost an hour to arrive. Will eat elsewhere in future.

Booked in last minute at The Castle and had the lasagne plus a pizza. We arrived Saturday and can honestly say this is the best meal we’ve had to date. Booked again for this Thursday. The others were ‘okay’ (but not from The Castle). The 2 lads serving tonight (11/9/23) were really friendly and helpful.

Stopped for lunch with my husband, both ordered ham, egg and chips only £6.99 so I was expecting a small piece of ham and 1 egg, when it was served the ham alone was home baked, thick and over a whole large slice along with 2 eggs.although a simple meal it was delicious and eggs cooked perfectly. The gentleman behind the bar was very attentive and it was nice to see an elderly gentleman hobbling in and his pint was ready for him on the bar by the time he got there. So pleased we stopped here we will be back.

What a shame that this lovely pub (it even has a library !) in the most quaint village could only serve half a cup of coffee and class it as ‘regular’ size ? I didn’t query the quantity as the bar was busy etc but to charge £2.20 for what we jokingly referred to as a ‘mouthful’ was quite poor, even in a tourist trap location ?

Nice to see that The Castle has reverted back to being The Castle and is no longer called Miller's. We've been coming here for years and it has had a lot of money spent on it in recent years which it desperately needed. Has a good menu with reasonable prices and a good range of beers. Sometimes feels as if you're in a library and there are an abundance of books available to read but a very good pub/restaurant right in the centre of the village.

I didn't eat here but saw plenty of people seemingly enjoying doing so. I spent several happy afternoon and evenings sitting in this pub sampling some of the ciders on tap. During July I watched England win the infamous penalty shoot-out against Colombia here with a predominantly local clientele - all of whom friendly and welcoming. During October I spent some more time here enjoying the relatively unknown courtyard area out the back which is a lovely, peaceful place to enjoy a book and a pint without much interference. I was equally at home sitting in my favourite sofa (which a good view of the TV for some more football action) and an equally good view of the pool table where I witnessed some local action!

We stayed hear for 4nights and was really pleased with our room. Modern, clean and a lovely ensuite with a super shower and good quality towels. The complimentary tea tray was well stocked with tea, coffee and nice biscuits. The staff were very friendly a special mention about Mike who was a joy to meet in the morning and cooked a great breakfast. However our beds were never made and on the 3rd day after we had done a 9 mile walk we returned to find our room had not been touched. We were were soaked from our walk and really wanted a hot drink and a shower but the cups were dirty,no milk and the towels were wet having used them for 3days. We had to go and ask for towels and told that it was the house keepers day off and it was a personal thing that they don’t make beds anyway . Well I have never ever experienced that before and it should be pointed out when booking. Because I make beds and clean at home everyday when I go away I want a total break not self catering. What a shame that we had to deal with that on our short break. So when booking check what day the housekeeper is off and if like me you like your bed made if this service will be provided. If you are staying 1night there won’t be a problem and would recommend.

Family dinner on holiday. Friendly and very efficient staff, child and dog friendly, plenty of space in a lovely old pub which has hundreds of books lining the walls - apparently they were left when the previous business moved out. You can just browse the books or buy them by giving a donation to the charity box! Kept our grandchildren (and adults) occupied for ages! The food was very good, large portions, even from the children's menu. The chicken tikka masala was delicious and at a total bill of £77, for 4 adults and 3 children, including a couple of wines and ciders, a beer, plus soft drinks, it was an absolute bargain. We visited the Castle Hotel for an evening meal, having had drink in here previously, whilst on a weekend trip to Somerset, staying in Porlock. The pub is quite quirky, having once been a wine bar, and has a mix of comfy settles and tables with chairs. There are hundreds, if not thousands of books lining most walls, which are available for customers to read and residents to take to their rooms. There are also a number of games provided for customer use.The bar has a good range or local and national/international drinks, beers were well kept, and the staff were all friendly and cheerful. Is was moderately busy when we visited, and we had reserved a table in the small restaurant area, although meals can be eaten in the bar area. One slight disappointment was that you still had to order at the bar when sitting in the restaurant, but that is not entirely unusual with pubs, and you can open a tab. There is a good range of meals on the menu, and the food was extremely tasty, and nicely hot when served. The desert menu is a little restricted, but was ok.

After an odd experience in the Royal oak (same town) we chose this place to eat as we were by now very hungry. Place was completely empty aside from the beer garden but it may have been post mothers day rush. The castle is decked out with sofas and a library. Whilst comfortable and perhaps purposeful locally, the place struggles to define what it is offering to a visiting stranger. I chose Calamari and a Chili Burger. My friend had a very ordinary chili con carne that was sloppily plated and bland. My burger was of the quality you might expect from a Burger van and not worthy of the more gourmet price attached. Overall a disappointing experience, especially when i informed the owner the burger was not enjoyable. He looked slightly sheepish and mumbled something about "is that ok?" but offered no view or solution. Very disappointing.

This place is trying to find its identity - Its almost there. The staff are very freindly and helpful but the menu is basic. Great if thats what you are after. I had a jacket potato which tasted a bit...reheated, but it was hot and flavoursome and plenty of melted cheese. My husband had scampi and chips which he rated as very good quality. The surroundings are a bit tired and tatty, but after a busy season, that can be forgiven. its an eclectic mix of sofas and formal tables and chairs - sometimes this can work, but its a trend that has exhausted itself - It needs to be more individual and perhaps have some specials. Staff were very attentive and chatty and made you feel welcome. We will happily return mainly down to that welcome.

Visited today for a late lunch and first impressions were very good, the decor is lovely and the eclectic range of books on the bookshelves all around were an interesting addition. The chap behind the bar was pleasant and two of our five meals were excellent (gammon eggs and chips). Unfortunately that is as far as the positive comments can go, two of us had the chicken tikka masala which was the worst we have ever had. There were only three pieces of chicken on one plate and five on the other and all of the pieces were about one centimetre square so it was mostly sauce and no substance (although the sauce was okay), not worth the money. In our opinion this place should not be called a restaurant, we wanted drinks while we were looking at the menu and had to order and pay for them immediately rather than open a tab and pay for the drinks and food at the same time after our meal. Then we had to go back to the bar and order our food and pay for it (I've never been to a restaurant and had to do this) maybe this is to ensure they get their money as they have other dissatisfied customers! At no time were we asked if we were enjoying our meals, and when we'd finished we sat for a while but were not asked if we'd like coffee and dessert and the plates were not cleared away, presumably again they expect you to just go back to the bar. By the way, there was nobody else eating at the time we were there and only a few having drinks.Considering this is called a hotel the impression we had was that it is more like a pub with rooms. We only went there because The Ship which had better reviews here on TA wasn't doing food Until 7pm and they told us a The Castle would be. If we're in the area again we won't be going back.

When I complied, and later went back to the bar for one more drink (card in hand!) Stopped off here after a good afternoons walk. Lovely building and the bar/restaurant was well presented. Good selection of real ales and ciders. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The down side was the food we ordered. My wife ordered a chicken Caesar Salad which came in a bowl and looked like a messy tossed salad without any individuality at all. My wife merely picked at the salad. Our friends teenage daughter also ordered this dish and was totally unimpressed with as well. I had the Rump steak with an au poivre sauce. The steak was only ok and the au poivre sauce was peppery but just looked like a clear sauce. Overall we were all very disappointed with the food that was presented. It was also rather expensive.

Lovely pub with a great welcome from the staff. Didn't have a great choice of food at the time of our visit. We will try there again when we return later in the year.

Decided to eat at the Castle whilst staying in Porlock recently. We have eaten here some years ago and even stayed at the hotel but not since the new ownership. The food and service were both disappointing. The beef chilli was a dish of lukewarm liquid with the odd clump of mince and chick peas and a couple of red kidney beans, very tasteless. The curry wasn't much better. The bar staff seemed totally indifferent. Perhaps we just happened to go on an 'off day' as many reviews say the food is good.

Our food arrived at our table quite soon after ordering, but my husband's side salad was limp and brown, his choice of sandwich the cheese had not been melted properly. Not much effort made with the food and my fish finger sandwich tasted of a cheap version of fish fingers. On the plus side the chips were very good but overall a poor meal. A good priced lunch but now we know why.

We stopped here for a meal one evening this week and it was lovely. The staff were mostly quite young and they were so polite and provided excellent service. My mother ended up talking to one very kind man behind the bar about her childhood holidays to Dunster Beach and he listened and was really polite to her many stories!!The food was lovely, my only fault is that you can taste the quality of the meat and it could be better - especially with a butchers in the village! Locally sourced meat with a bit of promotion would go down a storm! The inside of the restaurant is beautiful and could not be faulted. It looks very high quality. Overall a very positive experience and I would definitely recommend! The prices are shockingly good for what you get! I almost smiled when I saw the bill!

The place looks very very decent and the staff was very friendly. Yet, the food was just disappointing. During our stay in England/Wales, we ate in 8 different pubs, so I feel we have good comparison to be able to judge, and this just wasn't good. The steak I had was not cheap, yet it was dry and the vegetables were unimpressive and just too simple. For a meal in Porlock, I advice The Ship Inn.

Castle bar and lounge area provided a good choice of cold drinks at reasonable prices. Quick service from friendly staff. Food also on offer and looked good but we didn't sample this.

More local than tourist but not bad for a reasonably priced meal although the menu is not extensive. Both meals I had when I visited were good size and well cooked.

Quirky pub with big, comfy sofas and walls lined with books. A great place to sit, have a drink and relax.

4 of us sat in the bar area & ordered drinks & food, the bar was busy but our food arrived with not too long a wait, the food was all very good, good portion sizes & all hot & obviously freshly cooked. We had 4 mains & 4 sweet courses very happy with all food & the costs were acceptable also. We would certainly eat here again.

Pleasant dining area, with 'library' ambience. Although the menu was not extensive, the food was tasty and ably served. The very economicbill was a pleasant surprise. Excellent value for money.

This is now called Exmoor fish and chips. Very clean and well run, girls wearing hairnets. Very quick service. The Boss had small cod, cooked fresh which she pronounced excellent. I had pie also very good. Shed load of really good chips. All in all a good chippie. I recommend them.
