We got here during a walk around the area. Chawton is lovely, as is this little cafe and we both really enjoyed a coffee and cake which was pretty reasonably priced actually. But the service was appallingly slow. We arrived around 4 p.m. so it was quiet, although there were a couple and a single lady ahead of us queuing up for a drink. We all ordered tea/coffee and a cake. It took 20 minutes for us to get our order... So 3 orders served in 20 minutes - sorry, that's too long! There was one person doing the coffees and serving the cakes and three around the back, doing who knows what? Well they did appear to be examining their phones a lot... Half the cake displays were empty so the lady in front of us asked if there was anything left. The person doing all the work looked under the counter, where I guss they keep records of cake sales or something and announced to the bunch at the back that they needed more cakes out front. After a couple of minutes, someone came round with replenishments and disappeared again... Why weren't the cakes sorted out before then and why weren't there two people working out front? I appreciate that people can order hot food at this place so they need staff round the back, but when we got there no one was doing that. We really enjoyed our drinks and cake, but the service was pretty rubbish to be honest. Someone out the back should have helped the poor lady out the front doing ALL the work! Maybe it was below their pay grade? I would still recommend this place - as long as you are not in a hurry - hence the 4 overall...

I so wanted to climb behind the counter and sort this place out when we took a friend there last weekend. Visiting it was such a bad experience, which was such a shame after a lovely visit across the road at the museum. Firstly the service. One has to queue at a very small counter in order to get served and then carry one's tray to a table. The queue was out the door. There was one person at the counter by herself doing everything. ( I could see two more out the back, who never seemed to think that, given the long queue, it might be an idea to hop on some coffee making duties to speed up the process). We spent twenty minutes working our way to the counter. Then the food! We only wanted coffee and scones. There were no scones on the very limited menu, which I found a bit unbelievable, given the setting. It was basically crumpets and tea cakes. Though there were also some slices of cake displayed. What we ordered was overpriced and mediocre. The coffee was good. But the sad thing is that the chaos at the counter and the inability of the management to see that table service might be a good idea, just took the good out of any further experience at the cafe for me. It all left a sour taste sadly. Casandra's really need to have a firm look at themselves.

Handy location if going to Jane Austin's house. Easy parking Ordered what I thought was the Bircher but turned out to be a small amount of Granola with yogurt, a berry compote and quite a few bits of dried banana. Disappointing, maybe I read the menu wrongly. Good coffee.

Stopped here for tea and breakfast before visiting Jane Austen's House. The girl who served me was bright and cheerful- a lovely warm welcome. She was very clear on their processes (telling me she was putting my food order into the kitchen before making the tea so I knew what was happening). Food was lovely (I had the avocado on sourdough with egg, my friend had the ham toastie). If I had to think of something to improve I'd suggest bigger tea pots (or maybe add a pot of hot water) so I can enjoy being there a little longer. Loved the cups hanging from the ceiling. Would definitely visit again .

Usually a daytime tearoom but I went to a special evening event. Last night, 29/02/24, was an Italian night. It was an excellently presented five course meal with matched wines. Only beware of the Peposo, Tuscan beef stew, as the authentic pepper content was a surprise for some. The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. It is a small restaurent, 20 covers, so when you see an event you like book quickly. Note for parking; Chawton has no street lights so a torch in the dark is a good thing to have.

I can honestly say this was probably the worst food I’ve had for a while and how you can mess up a very basic toasted sandwich is still a mystery! I’m not sure how they can justify the prices for food which is just so bad. Maybe it was a bad day for them but we both couldn’t face finishing what we ordered. Also, top tip, please use less salt!! The setting of Cassandra’s Cup is idyllic. A pretty tea shop, looking over the house where Jane Austin’s lived. In a stunning village with thatched cottages galore and next door to a fabulous pub. Being local, we often take visitors to Cassandra’s cup for coffee or an afternoon tea. This is always a pleasant experience, with delicious tea and cakes served in pretty bone china cups and saucers. On this occasion we decided to have spot of lunch. This was a big mistake. I think light lunches maybe a step too far for the staff. For a start we waited well over half an hour for our food. Then when it arrived, the caesar salads were tiny, there were no croutons, no parmesan cheese shavings or anchovies (except in the dressing). The bacon resembled soft ham. The chicken was tasty, but not enough of it. When we asked why there were no croutons we were told that they had just run out, but when we asked for our money back on the three Caesar salads the waitress offered to make some. Why could she not have done that before, to avoid having disgruntled customers? The other member of our party had an egg with cress sandwich. This had two tiny leaves of cress and huge chunks of egg. Not the delicate egg and cress sandwich that you would expect in a stunning Hampshire village. Our complaints to the staff were met with contradictions about what a caesar salad ingredients included and the waitress was clearly disgruntled. Not great customer service. We eventually, sent the salads back, and to be fair, we were given a re-fund when we asked for it. On a positive note, the young lady in the shop who took our orders could not have been more delightful and did apologise for the long wait and the disappointing food. She saved the day.

Such a disappointing visit as we had been before and looked forward to it whilst spending the day in this lovely village. Most tables were cluttered with used dishes when we arrived (and whilst we sat and waited) even though the cafe was almost empty. When our chicken ceasar salads finally arrived they were hardly that. A very little lettuce, no parmesan, 3 miniscule pieces of chicken and too many very hard croutons (which I feared might break my teeth). Such a shame.

Dropped in for afternoon tea after visiting Jane Austen's house opposite. Had a wonderful afternoon tea each for the great value of £6 - a fresh, warm, homemade scone, with Tiptree jam and Rodda's classic Clotted Cream, and a pot of tea for her and an excellent latte for me. Delightful decor, and friendly service, with china cups supended from the ceiling, and some delectable treats. I visited Cassandra's Cup today on my own, ordering a Bacon, Brie and Cranberry Panini and a coffee (total spend was £11.15), and taking my coffee to my table with me. By the time my panini arrived 20 minutes later, I had finished my coffee. The cafe wasn't busy - 3 other tables were accupied with 2, 3 and another 2 people, and my order was not placed last, but still took 20 minutes to arrive and was 'warm' rather than 'hot'. As I was already short of time by then, I didn't stop to talk to a member of Staff about my expereince. I'm returning to Chawton in two days but, other than the pub, which I believe is linked to Cassandra's Cup, I don't believe there is any other cafe/tea room in Chawton to give Cassandra's Cup any 'competition'.

Would not come back. Disorganised seating, disorganised staff, took ages to figure out that it was not table service indoors even though a staff member gave us a menu but never mentioned it. We ordered one cream tea and another pot of tea with a teacake which took over 20 minutes to turn up. Cold when arrived, only 1 pot of tea turned up. Then to top it all off they started to put out reserved plaques on all tables who were still waiting for their orders to be fulfilled. The tables were reserved for 3.30pm that day. They put them on at 2.30pm. Utter disgrace and chaos and no apology from anyone when we overheard that is was a boys mistake who just put all orders together so no one knew which order to complete first.

Charming venue. But when we went for lunch there, we had a full hour's wait and a bit more on top simply for quiche and salad. Other people were also complaining about the time they had waited and the staff (after our order) took to warning people that there would be, say, 20 mins delay. Since the salads were from bags (seen being brought in) and the quiches barely warm (defrosted?), an hour's delay was incomprehensible. I would say that the kitchen is probably too small for the number of tables; everyone was doing everything (cooking, serving, taking payment). We complained to the waitress and the manageress then told us off for 'shouting' at the waitress, which we hadn't, though we probably did sound angry. The manageress gave us about 50% off at our request. I think the staff here are basically nice and anxious to please and were having a busy day, but the restaurant should be set up to deal with a busy day in mid-July and opposite an international attraction; it needs more staff or fewer tables. I wouldn't go there again. Try the tea room at Chawton House instead.

I have visited this cafe once before for tea and cake and absolutely loved it. So I was really looking forward to breakfast today. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. In a nutshell the staff seemed unable to cope and under extreme pressure. You could only pay by cash which I noticed turned a few visitors away. The cafe was dirty with uncleared tables and even a dead fly on the windowsill next to our table. They had run out of several items including the cakes (which apparently had happened yesterday so why hadn't they been replenished?). How could items required for the breakfast menu have run out within an hour or so of opening? They didn't bring our tea until AFTER we had finished breakfast (after having been reminded about it approx 3 times) - by which time I didn't want it any more as I like to drink tea while I'm eating. Not sure I will be returning.

We revisited these tea rooms this afternoon after a 'lull' of about two years. The location is directly opposite Jane Austen's former home which naturally attracts lots of visitors. We used to visit Casandra's Cup frequently but then moved away from the area. When we arrived today, it was busy at 2.10pm, however there were still a few tables available. There were two young girls serving and operating the till and in all fairness they were working hard, however in the 30 following minutes, they were too busy to even take our order. After what I considered, a more than reasonable wait of about 18 minutes, I approached one of them to make sure it was as we remembered, still table service. I was assured that our order would be taken soon. After a further 12 minutes we got up and left. I cannot criticise the waiting staff, they were working as fast as they could. This establishment, on this occasion at least, was very poorly managed. During our wait several other couples left having been totally ignored. Sadly I am in no position to comment on the standard of the food. 2 years ago, it used to be good but there again so was the service. Something has changed and we will not be returning.

Please in the future put some effort in to making a good black coffee there isn't anywhere for you to hide with milk. If you use good beans it comes down to the care of the person making it. Black coffee should come with a creme on the top which holds the flavour without this you might as well serve powdered coffee. Didn't try any food so can't comment.

This little cafe is perfectly placed to pick up the trade from visitors to Jane Austen’s house in Chawton. As it was a sunny day and people were happy to sit outside there was plenty of space but this might not be the case if the weather was more inclement. The menu tempted our taste buds with everything from savoury light snacks to delicious cakes. We chose the baked potato with chilli and the brie, bacon and cranberry sauce panini. The food was delicious and served very promptly by excellent staff. The only criticisms would be the visual appeal of the food was not as great as it tasted (especially the baked potato) and the staff seemed run off their feet with no one actually manning the till, which was a shame as they were all very young girls whose professionalism was second to none. The carpet also needed a good clean. Minor points but attention to detail is everything even if you do have a captive clientele in Chawton.

Stopped in here during a midweek walk and enjoyed a very good coffee and Eggs Benedict. Friendly service and doing a good trade as was full of literary tourists visiting the local attraction.

We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea here after visiting Jane Austen’s house across the road. Definitely a place to visit to while away a few hours.

We were visiting the Jane Austen house museum on a very wet Sunday. Cassandra’s cup is just opposite. My daughter had booked afternoon tea which was fortunate as many people were turned away. The cafe is tiny with tables closely packed together. The waitress was very helpful. I chose Apple and cinnamon tea and my daughter chose chocolate tea from an extensive tea menu. There was a small sandwich menu from which we chose egg with cress and salmon with cream cheese. The afternoon tea consisted of sandwiches, large scones with thick cream and jam and a selection of cake. All was delicious and filling. We had extra pots of tea and glasses of water and felt able to relax. Above our heads was an extraordinary array of tea cups attached to the ceiling. Definitely recommended for all visitors to the Jane Austen house though booking advisable.

A nice place for people visiting Chawton and Jane Austen's house - although the place closes at 4:30. So if you're planning to go after Jane Austen's house closes (which closes at 4pm), then this may not work - which is what happened to us the first time we found ourselves in the area. So we booked in advance the next time we were there and reached much in time. But we needn't have booked as the place was quite empty. The tea/coffee was nice and so were the cakes although the chocolate cake was cloyingly sweet. Also don't know if the cakes are made locally or sourced from a wholesaler. But the overall ambience was nice and they had a good menu!

Came here for a quick drink and cake. The atmosphere is very chilled and absolutely lovely. However the price made me question if it was really worth it ... £6.25 for a cake and a small can off Diet Coke seemed a bit extreme. But never the less a lovely place

We are a group of 6 ladies and treat each other when big birthdays happen so booked the Jane Austen museum and booked afternoon tea at Cassandra's for the six of us ...they were accommodating of our needs (two vegetarians, a large age appropriate helium balloon ,. A pot of Redbush, a pot of earl grey, a pot of water, and another pot of another type of tea) and were nicely caring of us....when we left ( long after closing time ) they came outside and we took photos and they were chatty and smiling, talked about their Tiffin..we felt we were most welcome and were being blessed by the perfect end to a wonderful day

A useful little place particularly if your visiting Chawton Cottage. The cakes looked inviting though we didn't partake instead we had coffee with cream. UHT cream which congealed on the surface of the coffee, still it was ok. Stick to tea.

We stopped here for a cuppa and scone, there is an outside area as well as inside seating with waitress service. The scone was a little dry but some of the food being served to others looked good.

Sipping our tea (or coffee) aver visiting the Jane Austen Museum, we couldn't help but think of those charming village coffee houses featured in the older segments of the "Midsomer Murders" drama series.

Visited for Sunday brunch after a family wedding as we were staying in the village. Sadly the quaint veneer rubbed off quite quickly. We were told that as a group of 8 we had only one choice of egg with the full breakfasts. We ordered several full breakfasts, a couple of veggie breakfasts and pancakes. The pancakes were not home made but clearly packet scotch pancakes that were served barely warm. We had to chase several times for the toast and orange juice accompaniments for the full breakfasts and were made to feel as though we had inconvenienced staff on each occasion. Subsequently toast arrived after breakfasts had been eaten. Ingredients seemed poor quality and the portion sizes were small for the price. The only selling point was nice coffee.

Found it closed and could not see any opening times displayed on the door or window. Therefore had no idea if it was closed all that day, not open yet, opening later etc. Why not even the courtesy to display opening times for visitors?

Fantastic little cafe that's decorated beautifully and really gives you that holiday feeling as soon as you step in. Full of great touches like jars of sweets for the kids to buy, jams, walking guides etc. We had the cooked breakfast and pancakes and both were perfect - filling us up for the long walk ahead that day!

On a trip to the Jane Austen House Museum we stopped in at Casandra's Cup for breakfast. Between us we had a Casandra's breakfast and the smashed avocado. Both were delicious. Everything was prepared fresh and the service was very good. Had we not still been so full after our visit to the museum we would have been tempted to pop in for lunch.

This was a second visit to this charming cafe-cum-restaurant sited opposite the house where the famous Jane Austen wrote most of her books; the cafe is presumably named after her sister Cassandra. It is a very lively place embracing a small but charming interior, with lots of interesting artefacts, and seating outside for those who enjoy the summer weather. Our visit on this occasion was at the height of the season and this was reflected in the much-increased prices. Our sandwiches were freshly made and the tea very welcome and delicious. However, we had to wait nearly 30 minutes for these, since although the cafe was well served with helpful waitresses, the kitchen was short of one of its chefs. Apologies for the delay were nicely offered and accepted, but, we will wait for the off-season prices to take effect before visiting again.

This is a lovely little place, with very friendly staff. Nice to visit after you've been to Jane Austen's House Museum or Chawton House. We had cakes and coffee, which was all very lovely but I don't understand why everything is supersized. We shared two cakes between three adults and couldn't finish it, and the coffee cup was big enough to go for a swim in.

Chawton is a lovely village and Cassandras cup is located immediately opposite the Jane Austin museum. There was seating outside so we were able to sit in partial sun. The service was prompt and the menu had a good choice of food and drink. I had a tuna sandwich which came with a little bit of salad and some crisps. the bread was a little dry, but it was all very tasty. A cappucino after went down very well.

Been to quite a few Harvesters, you know what you're generally in for. The exception here - fantastic service. On a late Sunday evening, with a bunch of starving and cranky kids, service is so important. Emily C. made such an effort to engage with the kids, ensuring speedy service and communication throughout. Getting great service anywhere is exceptional in and of itself, but getting it when you're with you're family is a diamond in a hay stack - and this was exactly that. Emily and the team's service was so fantastic, the rest of what you might like/dislike about a Harvester doesn't matter one bit.

Tried to have lunch here today. It was lunchtime and with the relatively small choice of meals and snacks available, (breakfast stops at 11:30am) it would have been reasonable to assume that demand could be met. Wrong! With only three quarters of tables occupied, my first choice of meal was unavailable due to a lack of potatoes. So, having had to choose another dish, twenty minutes passed before being informed that an ingredient for that was missing. I found this unacceptable and left having been refunded for the inconvenience of having to put up with such shoddy service. I was not the only complainant and something needs doing to improve service in this establishment.

Booked a table online, taking a chance on a place to eat we had not eaten before. My wife and I were with another couple and had the following from the menu: Starters; 2x Ham Hock & Cheddar Croquette, Mustard Mayo. 1x Cajun Tiger Prawns, Asian Sauce, Mixed Leaves. 1x Nachos – Sour Cream, Guacamole, Salsa. Mains; 2x Slow Cooked Rack of Ribs, House Made Barbeque Sauce, Fries, Coleslaw (1x half & 1x full) 1x Quesadilla, Toasted Tortilla Wrap with Melted Cheddar, Onion and Peppers, with added Cajun Chicken 1x Cooked Venison Haunch Steak, Chive Mash, Seasonal Vegetables, Port Reduction, Berry Jus. The food was outstanding, all of our food pierced at the table hot and freshly cooked, flavour of all the dishes was fantastic. I had the venison dish and it was exquisite. Staff were very friendly and helpful, with table service and a good knowledge of the menu. We would all definitely return to this pub/restaurant. Food and drinks were reasonably priced.

We visited today and will definitely be returning, took advantage of the Priceiswight deal and had 2 courses for 2 people 25.00 pounds.... Was the best Sunday Roast dinner we've had in a long time, plates were warmed, food excellent and service was very good, plenty of parking and noticed they have quite a few offers on during the week at lunchtimes. Lovely location too for a countryside walk before or after.
