Carter & Fitch in Sunderland

We have been eating here for several weeks now whilst working in the area. Always Fantastic visit, food and service was exceptional.

TOOK 4 Friends for Sunday lunch PROS - Food was plentiful and well presented CONS Food was at BEST lukewarm except for battered cauliflower Service was diabolical - no one came to ask if every thing was OK or if we needed any more drinks Sat for a very long time waiting for our table to be cleared, when I complained I was told they were busy ( do they need more staff? as most tables are booked so they should be aware of service needs) We waited so long that we decided not to have desserts (Loss of revenue)

Went in on the 29th October for lunch As I was on course for a job in the hotel. Ordered fish finger butty and chips and coke. The lady brought the food The lettuce was brown all off it not fit to eat I told the waitress she did not about it. Paid £9 for fish finger butty too

Went for Sunday lunch and we were very disappointed. The food was cold and the service very poor. We definitely felt forgotten. The choice of veg was good but sadly as I said earlier, it was cold!

Set within the Mercure George Washington hotel, spa and golf complex. They offer a good selection of starters and main to suit most dietary needs and have a small selection of desserts.

Nice relaxed atmosphere with different people here for different reasons. Food was spot and so was the service with a special shout out to Shan

A don't really know where to start with this one. Service - terrible Food - average Lager - flat and over priced Waiting time - forever. The best part of this visit was leaving the premises. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone (unless i didn'tlike them) nor would we ever return. 100% disappointed

This place was such a let down! We are staying for 3 days in the George Washington Mercure Hotel next door and hoped for a nice meal on our first evening Carter & Fitch at this particular venue is full of men..I would say 98% ...who are either here on business or playing golf Nobody was misbehaving at all but it was nothing more than a glorified pub with some nice food The young waitress who served us..we have to say was lovely..polite and understanding! We won't be eating there again during our stay..we'll be looking for an alternative!! We are disappointed!!

Food was lovely. Nice atmosphere. Ross was very attentive and helpful and manages his team well. He makes a mean strawberry mojito. Superstar!

Went for an evening meal for our children's birthdays! Kids ate from set menu, lovely options to choose from. Adults had nacho sharer with pulled pork then burger and chicken schwarma. All food was cooked to perfection but what really made our evening was the service we received from Ffion. She was absolutely amazing with our kids. She could not do enough. Would highly recommend Carter and Fitch for a special meal. We will be back!

Gen Z staff were so rude they looked at me when I came and ignored me. I seated myself and even had to ask the staff to get me and my friend a menu. After that I had to consistently call them over to order my food etc. Despite the lack of hospitality the goth behind the bar still made the time to continuously stare at the table I was sat on in a very hostile way. If you haven’t guessed I won’t be coming back to this terribly ran restaurant. I’m sure the owner is respectful but the employees who work there are useless.

Two stays and four meals, unfortunately left with a bad taste in the my mouth from one member of staff who was speaking down to her fellow colleagues like they were mud on her boots and she owned the place. Ruined the atmosphere for myself and my fellow guests.

Had to wait far too long for everything. Service was crazy slow despite lots of staff and a quiet restaurant. Food was way to salty and the chef was clearly over enthusiastic with chilli. Quite disappointing.

A beautiful coxy place in the heart of Washington. I was there for a spa package treatment. That included a light meal from the restaurant.

Carter fitch very nice place nice staff but a little expensive

Slow service and not a one off. Consistently have to go to the bar to order further drinks as staff do not come to check on you. On this occasion they brought 2nd drinks and left our first empty glasses, I was missing parts of my starter and main. They delivered our mains to the table and they hadn't even cleared the starter plates. At a previous visit a staff member tried to clear the table while a member of our party were still eating. I spoke to a manager to raise all of the above. He said thanks for raising and didn't query anything else and no apology. When he left he did clear plates but after getting further drinks and dessert spoons brought to our table, empty glasses were still left with us despite raising this as an issue just minutes before. No apology and no good will gesture made on the bill either. Very disappointing and unfortunately not a one off experience on our minimal yearly visit on our anniversary. We will not be returning and neither will other family members.

Nice place, friendly staff. I had a pizza which are handmade to order and it was fantastic! Beer was a little bit expensive but OK.

We arrived without a booking and thought we’d try our luck. They didn’t have a table ready for us but we were able to sit on the bar tables and have a drink until there was a table, which we were fine with. Food was great and staff were very attentive and friendly. Ffion, Ross and a gentleman behind the bar (so sorry I forgot your name) were all brilliant with us!

Booked for Sunday lunch and we weren’t disappointed. This was our first visit and we’ll definitely be back again. Greeted by professional and friendly staff we seated at our table promptly and drinks order taken. Drinks arrived quickly. We were given adequate time to peruse the food menus, order taken and food arrived in good time. The restaurant was relatively busy but the staff were always attentive, asking if we were ok, if we needed anything, more drinks etc. Food was delicious; the giant Yorkshire pudding is a real show piece! Between us we had a beef dinner, pork dinner, pizza and a veg filled Yorkshire. The portion sizes are gigantic, but we still had room for pudding which was equally good. Lovely atmosphere to the place; we weren’t staying at the hotel but had a good look around and everyone was friendly and welcoming. 10 out of 10, can’t recommend enough.

Food was disgusting, steak wasn’t cooked how I asked and had no taste!! Service was awful, use to like coming in here, never again.

Very nice Sunday roast well worth a visit

My friend and I came here when staying in the hotel. The food was very nice and the drinks were of good quality. The atmosphere was relaxed and all areas were very clean and tidy. Could not fault the staff that were on duty Ross, El and Tia were a credit to this place.

Pizza is poor considering the oven they have. They also close the bar early and everyone in the hotel has nowhere to go.

Absolute rubbish. Overpriced, reheated stodge. The premise of an American diner type food menu sounded great. £4 pint of diet coke and that was the best deal of the night. Avoid at all costs.

The food was just warm, even though it had obviously been under the hold lamp for some time as the sauce had a skin on it. Staff could of been a little more enthusiastic about their job and a poor selection of drinks

not impressed at all. We came here, shared 4 starters which were reasonable, then had chicken & chorizo pizzas. Out of 4 pizzas we didn’t finish one between us. Bone stuck in the gum from the chicken & the cheese tasted off. We brought this issue up & £10 was taken off our bill so overall we paid £94 and ate two starters. Staff were very rude, not helpful & service was lacking.

was not impressed waited 10 minutes at the bar before getting served. got taken to our table staff was very miserable ordered food, starters were okay however mains was disgusting we ordered 4 pizzas and just about ate 1 between us we brought this up with the staff and got offered 2 chocolate cakes to share between us.Also full duration we were there glass outside smashed that wasn’t cleaned up.

The Sunday dinner was beautiful. Extra gravy love the battered cauliflower. We were seated quickly and order taken swiftly. Food arrived fast. Now - Not the restaurants fault but a group of golfers got a bit out of hand. Ended up fighting a table left …. We didn’t leave and this can happen anywhere. The manager came from the back and removed them all. It was dealt with swiftly and appropriately. All the staff were safe and that to us was all that mattered. After our meal the plates were left that long we put them on the gravy splatted table next to us. We weren’t asked if we wanted desserts. We weren’t asked if we would like another drink. We were just left. There was a wedding on and they had to come in to the restaurant for drinks. We waited and waited and no one came back so we queued up to get our bill. The staff were serving at the bar but a few waitresses were dotted about. We managed to catch the young girl to get our bills so we could leave. There seems to be an issue with very slow staff? Not sure if they’re training? Or new? There was one young lad running around trying to juggle food and serving drinks? He seemed rannof his feet ……A few others kept going in the back? But really not sure what the issue was but this isn’t the first time the service has failed to meet my expectation. I can see other reviews say the same? I worry no one is reading the reviews. This place could be so much better? The table next to us was just left dirty the whole time we were there and there was opportunities for the staff to clear it. It was busy but not rammed. If the bar is busy could the management not come and help? We walked out and two were stood chatting. Whilst this is vital for a days work I do think there’s some staffing problems that really do put a dampener on the visit.

We attened today for a mothers day meal with a party of 5. Nice venue but service was horrendous. We sat almost 30 mins before being approached for orders, for arrived within a acceptable time and was presented well. The worst part was the time it took to clear tables after we all had finished eating. Almost 40 mins after we had to ask for bill to pay and leave, we did consider a dessert but the time it took them to even come to clear plates away was best not to ask about desserts. Only half of the plates were removed and veg bowls and condiments were left on our tables as we left. No one approached us to ask if everything was OK with food or was there any other requirements for our meals. The place wasn't that busy but service was practically slower than slow. On average food was 7 out of 10 but service a solid 3 out of 10. Not somewhere I would recommend to go for a family meal, I'd soo er go elsewhere in the future.

When arrived we were told no Sunday lunches left but we could order from the evening menu. When we went to order we were then told we should not help ourselves to menus and could only order Sunday lunches. We then explained we had been told the opposite and asked if we could order from menu anyway and they said yes. No apology for being spoke to rudely or the confusion. After ordering we were then told we wouldn’t get food until after the menu as available. But then food arrived. No communication obviously going on. Eventually we ordered desert. 25mins later I had to ask, “oh yes il sort it” again no communication. One member of staff made us feel as though it was our fault for things being wrong. Others were lovely particularly a young lady. Food was lovely. Such a shame that the service is slow and have no idea what is going on between each other. Need more leadership.

Food is lush , service isnt great

Very disappointed visit to one of our favourite places. My husband booked the hotel next door for our valentines weekend last week, he knows how much I love this restaurant, been 4 times now, and never faulted it. Until now, the food, as always was amazing, main course that was, as we dare ask for dessert so left without. Service was shocking and the couple sat near us said exactly the same, Although it was a Saturday night it wasn’t busy enough to warrant the service we received. We stood a good couple of minutes upon arrival waiting for our booked table, no staff being busy, just none around, then once we finally got seated, we were asked what drinks we wanted before we even had our coats off an saw a menu, weird, however we ordered, then the waitress came back 5 minutes later to re check my husbands drink!! Finally got those but then waited 15 minutes and had to go and find a staff member to ask if she could take our order, she was just setting up tables. Food arrived quick enough and again delicious, but then we sat and we sat and no further drinks no table cleared , almost half hour had past, then the couple next to us said don’t bother asking for a dessert, you’ll wait forever!! So we then caught the attention of another waitress and asked for the bill, 20 seconds it took for her to come back with that! Amazing eh?

The best Sunday lunch experience in a long time

Seemed lovely so we stopped by this place place was empty at 12.00pm but was told fully booked sorry. No offers would you to stay and try a drink or coffee or anything so we left. Will probably come back and try and book and won’t be a Sunday again.

Lovely bar with friendly staff and good food. Also has good pricing for items on the drinks and food menu.

Very poor service, only three tables being used- 6 people in total. Waited at bar for 30 minutes when arrived, then 30 minutes longer after sitting to take our order. Food was satisfactory but bar staff were too busy serving guests coming in from the function room. Waited on drinks coming over after asking then returned to the bar to remind bartenders. Good job it wasn’t busy, we now know why!

Top class service … on a business event and 5 star service all food served was to the highest standard was top notch and 3 key employees … Alex ,Ross and Hope all were on point servicing all requirements and being profressional in given roles . Highly recommend.Will definatley be back booking again .!

We went for sundsy lunch... waited a good 5 minutes before someone to take drinks order even though there were 3 staff doing nothing..we both ordered the beef and have to say it was delicious...just service was a little slow .

We were visiting family in the area and came to Carter & Fitch for dinner and drinks three times. The food was very good. The cheese board is excellent and perfect for a couple enjoying a bottle of wine and the handmade pizza is also excellent. They have a nice selection of wines. All of the staff were very friendly and we especially appreciated Matthew on the evenings we were there. The ambiance is pleasant.

Had a great evening with family from down south. Really friendly staff. Particularly Owen, Ross and Ellie. Great service. Would definitely come back again.

Not impressed, to be honest. There was very little atmosphere to the place. Food was mediocre. Limp salad covered in peppercorn sauce. A chipped enamel mug holding the chips. Steak was ok. Drinks pricey. Sorry,but I won't be back. Not my cup of tea.

Reduced menu, bloody suppliers! So back to the usual, BBQ brisket. Although my wife had a Cajun chicken burger which apparently was very nice

Food was average.. gave vibes more like pub chain standard than an independent local. Restaurant was empty so lacking in atmosphere although the decor is lovely. Has potential to be a good local. Service was bad however. Inattentive staff..had to ask for menus, table was left uncleared for 20 mins… lots of time spent doing odd jobs behind the bar and not interacting with customers. In the end we left dishes on the table to go to the bar and pay the bill to leave.

Service was slow and servers didn't seem to communicate well as we were asked about our drinks order 3 times by 3 different servers. Food was expensive and not worth the price as it was just average.

Food terrible, ask for a certain wine, got another, waited and waited for drinks and toilets unhealthy and should be shut down…. Wires hanging out of walls, water and pads on floor!!! Stay away!!!!!!!

Good food, slight mistake with one of the meals but that was rectified efficiently and without fuss, so no lost marks for that. My main issue was the lack of service. We had a table booked, but were actively ignored for 5 or 6 minutes by 4 of the team working the floor, fair enough bar man was busy, but couple of them nattering. Sat for ages after finishing the meal with dirty plates on the table, so I had to clear them myself, get my own menu and order dessert at the bar, i don't mind doing this and if that is the preferred method then fine, but tell people they need to be ordering at the bar. I travel this route monthly and it's a real shame because the hotel next door id decent, but this certainly makes me review my options again.

Expensive, £17 for a pizza and over £7 for a glass of wine. Food is average, the vegan cheese is weird and tastes like feet. Not sure if it is meant to be a blue cheese blend?! It wasn't bad just heavily overpriced.

Amazing food served up by brilliant staff, so friendly and so attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant which is also spacious and comfortable.

We went here for lunch, both had a salad, the Caesar with chicken and the roast beetroot with a king prawn skewer. Both were absolutely delicious, fresh and crisp salad and chicken and prawns cooked perfectly. Staff were very helpful and pleasant to talk to. Hopefully won’t be long and we will be back.

Scandalous bar prices £6.50 for a pint of fizz. Not one local ale on draught or bottle. Cancelled our dinner reservation when I realised the price for drinks. Didn't even pay as much as that in London.

Attending a wedding and I believe they did the catering, the staff had Carter & Fitch uniforms. Excellent food and service.

Nice on site restaurant to the hotel. Very busy with a couple of large groups when we were there, so got a bit overlooked tbh by staff, ended t eating very late & bot at a proper table as couldn't fit us in (despite one of our group booking for us?) That said when you did get their attention, staff were very good & food was excellent.

Booked for family of 16 for 70th birthday meal. Everybody enjoyed their food, only one slip-up which was handled considerately and quickly. Hung birthday decorations for us that we dropped off earlier. Delighted with entire experience and the staff were friendly, polite and nothing was too much trouble for them. Thank you!

We use it after golf for a drink. It does get busy on Sunday afternoons for Sunday dinner, so booking early is a good idea. They do a huge Yorkshire pudding, and I'm yet to see anyone finish one.

First time here and the food was absolutely amazing, we booked as a table if six. We ordered a mixture of pizzas, burgers, panini's and fish and chips. Chips were to die for and the desserts was amazing stunning. Unfortunately the service left us a bit dissapointed. They didn't fully clear or wipe down our table between the main course and dessert so we were left with sticky utensils and left over condements whilst, and we could see a group of them standing around, despite us trying to get their attention. The server informed us that he was sick that day which may have been the reason. We had to ask for cutlery for the desserts, then the coffees came out half an hour later, and then we had to go up and ask for card machine for the bill because they were all stood around again. It is a shame as we did thoroughly enjoy the food so it really just was the service that let it down.

Lovely pints but fairly expensive at £5.75 for a pint of Heineken or £6.40 a pint of moretti. The pub itself is nice aswell

- food was lovely - customer service was appalling! Booked our meal for 13:15, only got out at 3pm, spent most of the time waiting for someone to come to our table, whilst watching them stand around talking. When we asked for the bill we waited just under 10 minutes whilst watching the staff stand and talk before getting up to go to the till and ask to pay so we could finally leave. Genuinely nearly wanted to fall asleep waiting for the whole experience to be over. Feels like a complete waste of time and money unfortunately. Such a shame as beautiful setting and the food was lovely

Really pleasant and nice looking place to eat.

Short staffed in the kitchen but delay wasn't too bad. The waiters coped well under the circumstances. The food was reasonable and not over priced.

Absolutely delightful afternoon tea. The macrons were fabulous and the carrot cake was so light it almost floated into my mouth......can't wait for a return visit.

Went during the day whilst quiet but unfortunately only one member of staff was working, so service was extremely slow. Took 30 minutes to just get a menu and then much longer again for food to arrive. Shame though, because food was nice, but the wait was totally avoidable and unacceptable.
