Carousel Fish Bar in Canterbury

Food was terrible. Fish tasted old chips greasy. Have eaten before and its been lovely. Wouldn't go back again after yesterday's food.

Carousel Fish Bar, Whitstable, Tankerton, Kent This small outlet has a few tables in front but I guess it mainly caters for takeaway customers. The establishment is very clean and staff are welcoming. Based on my experience the food is cooked to order and fresh with a nice and crispy batter and a tasty fish fillet. The portions are more than adequate and the chips are “chips” as we traditionally know it. If you happen to be in the area and hungry for some tasty food in a fitting seaside experience it’s well worth a visit.

Don't let the humble appearance trick you. Extremely well executed fried fish, lovely chips.

Cod and chips tasted awful like they had been reheated . The batter looked a funny colour . So disappointed, especially because it was a seaside holiday place.. A waste of good money £31 .

Take away fish and chips. Husband questioned later whether it was actually cod. The fish lacked any flavour, hence his query to me.

Absolutely awful service this evening. Food was really bad anyway but the very rude and disrespectful employee made it even worse. Hairs in my friends food put him off a lot. And they then argued with us about the fact that it had hairs in it. EDIT: The following day and the fish has made me VERY poorly. Do not eat here.

9 of us dined here. The owners were really kind and welcoming. The food was lovely and served piping hot. Very clean too. Would recommend this fish & chip shop. Easy to park on road outside too.

RANCID, food was not edible we had scampi which was like small bits of cold fish fingers!! Chips tasted of burnt fat. My partner cut leg on the broken tables and chairs outside, they had nails sticking out and will really hurt a child!!! I mentioned to owner who could see my partners leg bleeding, she was a very rude lady she smirked as if we were being unreasonable. This place is an ABSOLUTE DUMP and to top it off the chef stood in the background he picked his nose and wiped it down his T-shirt!! I’m reporting them to council as tables and benches are dangerous.

Nice fish and chips but incredibly rude owner. We’d visited with friends who go every time they visit Tankerton. We ordered chips and cod bites and sat outside on their tables and ate it. My 5 year old son needed to use the toilet so we went through and used it. When we came out the owner was there waiting for me and tore me off a strip about how the public are not allowed to use the toilet. Fair enough but I explained that I’m a paying customer and was just sat outside. He then said it doesn’t matter the toilet is for restaurant use only and not for take away customers. There were at the time, only two people sitting in the restaurant who both said as I walked past that it was a bit harsh not to allow a paying customer’s child to use the facilities. One of my friends then went back in to speak to the owner who proceeded to argue with him and said it makes the restaurant customers feel uncomfortable and that we should go and ask them! My friend disagreed as that’s just a ridiculous thing to do, to invite other diners to join a disagreement and we left. Surely it’s not good customer service to argue with one’s paying customers? The food was nice but we will never be returning and my friends who are a large family will never return again either. My friend said to me “such a shame that’s happened because we come every time we’re in Tankerton but we’ll never be back.” Bit of a shame to lose return custom and for me to feel so upset by the situation that I’ve put this review on here.

Have used Ossie's before but decided to give Carousel a go. We had a little wait whilst they were freshly cooked then took them to the seafront to eat. Lovely crisp, crunchy batter a decent amount of haddock and plenty of chips.

We always use this chip shop and usually the food is great. Unfortunately the last time we got food, the chips were freshly cooked but tasted as if they were stale. They were tasteless and hard, not the usual standard. My husband wouldn't eat his, even my son commented that they weren't nice. Not sure if they have changed the oil or something but unfortunately the last lot of food has just put me off. Am unwilling to go back which is a shame. Will go elsewhere in future. Not good at all.

Came here as my son wanted battered sausage and chips…. Well never again! You could tell they were old, dry and tasted vile. The batter on the sausage was also disgusting. Next time will drive into town!

Miserable attitude and bad food. I give people the benefit of the doubt but this has been twice now. Chips were hard, the curry sauce was thick and congealed, and to top it off the guy seemed like he was having yet another bad day. I will be staying clear from now on. What a shame.

Good fish and batter, but like every other chippy, the chips are soft. Why don't chips have a bit of crunch any more? Our order was ready quickly, didn't have long you wait. Fish still served in polystyrene trays, not cardboard boxes, which is a shame.

6 out of 6 visits and the quality of the fish and chips have been of the highest standard, thoroughly recommended, and boy do I like fish&chips..

This fish bar has become a new must when visiting Whitstable. Probably the best Haddock I have ever had. You can park outside for a few moments. Prices are what you'd expect for a fish and chips.

Avoid like the a disease. Rude and arrogant staff(when asked when the food will be cooked told abruptly that it will be ready when its cooked). Chips were hard and stale tasting(as if warmed from another time) and the battered jumbo sausage was tough with batter rubbery. Will never go back even after a little time.

My experience at this establishment is “ok” at best. Whilst the staff were attentive and friendly, the food cannot be compared to the best fish and chip shops in Whitstable - that honour is bestowed upon VC Jones.

I took my daughters here for a takeaway. The staff were friendly and polite and served us very quickly. We bought family size chips, a veggie burger, buttered roll, sauces and drinks all for a very reasonable price! The food was delicious and I will definitely be going back. Highly recommended!

Visit here daily for a coffee, sometimes food. Friendly service, and very clean place. Prices are reasonable, and food always been tasteful

My husband thoroughly enjoyed his large Cod & Chips, I also enjoyed my Chicken Burger with Mayo and Lettuce all freshly prepared and service with a smile. Will definitely visit again when next in Whitstable.

Rock n chips twice £15.50. waited 25 minutes. Batter was "rock hard" stale! Had been cooked/stored in hot cabinet for long time Fish red hot! Tasteless. Chips stale. "Disgusting food" NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Handy to find this open when we fancied fish n chips on a Sunday lunchtime. Very tasty and the family sized chip portions were good value. Fish on the smaller size but delicious. My daughter loved the veggie nuggets and the chicken ones were real breast meat! Very clean, tidy and professional too. Will come again for sure!

I visited this fish and chip shop for the first time yesterday, the chips were amazing, the best I’ve had in a very long time, the sausage was also good however the saveloy was over cooked and the skin really dry and too crispy, not sure how long it had been sitting there once cooked. I would return due to how amazing the chips were but I don’t think I would get a saveloy from here again.

At a time when the government is trying to encourage people to get out and spend money, my visit here was absolutely awful. Waiting outside for 40 minutes is not an issue in the current climate, but watching people get their food before me, who had ordered after me was slightly annoying. When I politely questioned this I got snapped back at and told that their orders had been different, which I know not to be true as I could here them calling out the orders!!! When mine was eventually served, it was hardly served with a smile, and as I always do I had the figure of what it would cost in my mind. It actually came in £2 more expensive and when I politely questioned it I was then told that the prices on the board were wrong. This is even stranger taking into account that the government has now dropped VAT by 15% so surely prices should drop and not increase??? When we finally sat down to eat the meal, my Large Cod was the smallest piece of fish I think I had seen and the other Small Cod was the same size. Both were dry and over cooked and had obviously been sitting there quite a while, which only infuriated me more based on the fact I was told they were waiting to cook it fresh. The whole experience was terrible and at a time when we are hearing about businesses struggling and needing our custom it is very frustrating. I certainly won’t be going back

Went for fish and chips on Tankerton sea front was heading for Ossies but queue was too long so decided to give Carousel a try...pleasantly surprised good fish and chips and a complimentary spicey small portion of chicken and chips while we waited...nice touch and would thoroughly recommend

Now the secret of double cooking chips has long been out we were disappointing to get the old insipid once cooked offering, heading for soggyness. For those who don't yet know the secret of crispy golden brown chips with min fat absorbed.; 1st cook at normal temp to just 'cook' the potato', then before serving cook for a short time in hotter oil to crisp up. Pretty seemple really! Be aware some top chefs have now gone to THRICE cooking! A bit OTT for me!

Went there for pie n chips on friday..staff miserable n not very friendly..ordered pie n chips twice..got them home to discover my chicken n mushroom pie frozen in the middle and hot on the edges..nearly threw up..chips not great either..waste off money n not very good for my tummy!!..don't they test the middle of pies??..

Just visited with my wife we both had plaice and it was absolutely stupendously brilliant Back for the second time and we had the cod this time and it is fantastic next time it will be the haddock

Guy who was serving not a happy happy. Got my order wrong and short changed me. No Sausages in batter although ordered and paid for . Bill was over £50 Took to beach so too late to return. But will not return!!

Very good service and very polite staff. Me and my children absolutely loved the crinkle chips. Overall I really recommend going to this fish bar. Much better then your standard fish bars.

Under new management now and the place is even better. Fish is as fresh as can be and the chips are delish. Used to get a lot of little hard bits in the chips but now most of them are large and soft. Even the curry sauce is a lot better. I hope they keep up the quality. Oh dear, I did give it five stars but since then have got to report that the chips had gone back to being hard again, I reckon they are keeping them hot for to long and drying them out. Such a shame as they were the best chips I have tasted for years. The fish was as good as before though so three stars overall.

We had a lovely day out in Whitstable yesterday and decided to have fish and chips in the restaurant section of the Carousel Fish Bar in nearby Tankerton. What a lovely surprise! The fish and chips were delicious. Lovely white fish covered in a light batter and the chips were just as good. It was all piping hot, freshly cooked and served on a lovely big fish-shaped white plate. The staff were attentive and friendly and it was very good value. We will definitely go there again when we are next down that way.
