A good, clean honest family run business in Tain. Heather your hostess is great. Bed comfortable, linen clean and fresh, rooms basic but very clean, shower excellent. Food well cooked and a good selection. Breakfast very good to excellent. Value for money 100%! Walls a bit thin, so much so I disturbed my neighbour Becky with my snoring. Sorry Becky! Hope I didn't upset you too much.

Absolutely fantastic. Had the mushroom and garlic bread starter. And half chicken dinner absolutely amazing. Was extremely surprised though because it was away from the town it would be ok but it was absolutely fantastic. And the host heather who checked us in and made herself available at all times was a delight 💯 recommended to anyone staying

Looking for somewhere for lunch today. The website looked promising and we phoned to check to see if we needed to reserve. Phone just rang out but we thought that perhaps they were just busy and went anyway. The place was however deserted and we assume it is now closed.

Service was fantastic, but the food was very disappointing. The Christmas menu was priced at higher rates than good restaurants with set Christmas menus in big cities, which is fine if the food is good, but it was awful. The menu itself was odd with tinned fruit mixed in with prawn cocktail or fruit with a sweet syrup etc. The main course was the biggest disappointment! The turkey was not sliced off a roasted bird, but two thin preformed pieces of turkey type ham with cold thick gravy made from a powder mix, (definitely not homemade). This gloopy stuff covered everything. The carrots were good, but sprouts were woefully over cooked! They are my favourite veg, but must be cooked right! Steamed for a minute or two or sautéed with butter, pancetta, chestnuts. I’d have loved to meet the chef and ask or watch how everything is cooked. The strawberry merengue was a dry almost certainly pre bough sweet merengue with over whipped cream and two little strawberries. We have another Xmas night here with a work do and I’m seriously dreading the food, (and I LOVE food and love cooking). Would it be rude to bring a packed lunch? Yes...it was that bad!!

Arrived after a long drive to be greeted by a pleasant young lady who quickly checked me in. Room was a short walk from reception/bar. Room was big with a double bed, well two singles zipped together. It was spotless and comfortable for me. Mattress very firm. Television worked fine with a variety of free view channels. I had fish and chips for dinner but no tarter sauce ! I was hungry so duly ate it without it. It was delicious. Didn’t have any alcohol but there was a decent choice of beers and spirits. Slept well despite next doors tele loudly coming through the wall. Breakfast was delicious and cooked to order with anything you want from the menu being brought to your table. Recommended.

Koselig restaurant i idylliske omgivelser.

Small hotels sometimes don't pay a lot of attention to eating (apart from Breakfasts) as often guests want to explore the area and that can cover food too. In my brief stay I discovered a menu which would have sat well in larger and more expensive places and clearly the product of a chef with skill, experience and enthusiasm. All tastes are catered for and service is efficient and helpful. Some of the flavour combinations may challenge some palates but the quality is absolute.

The dinning room is light and spacious, looking over farmlands and water and mountains beyond. There were older couples as well as young families there when we came, and the wait service accommodated all the different size and flavor tweaks. I had the chocolate cake for dessert, and learned it was made by the chef. It was fabulous. I left with a warm friendly feeling.

We visited here last weekend whilst staying in Tain. We came along for dinner and we're totally disappointed. My mushroom starter was pretty tasteless, my partners sea food platter was the strangest platter I've seen, pile of tiny prawns, some salmon and something else I can't remember as it wasn't with remembering.. The mains.. my pie was hotter then the sun, I literally couldn't start eating it for about 15 minutes, it must have been in the microwave, there is no way an oven would have made it as hot as it was, it was nuclear! The veg was bland, I imagine pre cooked and left in wam water from the Sunday roast lunchtime.. my OH's dish was swamped in sauce. Literally swimming, halfway up the pie was sauce.. and it wasn't good sauce either. The meal wasn't finished. To be fair the meals were 2 courses for £12.50. We didn't know this when we booked but now it makes sense... A warning sign it was going to be awful should have been the size of the menu.. it's huge! I always remember watching a Gordon Ramsey Programme where he said if a restaurant had a massive list of dishes - Beware! Well, on this occasion Gordon was right.. I wouldn't eat here again and I do no recommend it.

Well it has to be said from the moment we walked in the door we received a warm, friendly and more importantly genuine welcome from all the staff (who were all smiling and continued to do so all night). I can't stress enough how effortlessly the Management and Staff made the whole service look. Nothing was too much of a problem! This experience was only made better by receiving a meal that was scrumptious, and cooked to perfection. The dishes were all presented in nice crockery and appealing to the eye. The Whisky Cream Sauce is by far the nicest I have ever tasted. I can't stress enough how friendly, accommodating, and professional everyone involved with making my Grandmothers 90th Birthday an even more joyous occasion. In my opinion there are a lot of restaurants and hotels out there that could learn a lot from the Team at the Carnegie Lodge. Hospitable Hospitality at its best. Thank you all very much.

Acting on a recommendation from a friend we dropped into the Hotel for lunch. From the minute we entered the foyer we were warmly greeted then shown to the bar for a drink (by choice) in order to select our choice from an extensive menu. After a short period of time we were shown to the dining room and served with good wholesome home cooked food. My wife had seafood medley as a starter and the roast chicken and trimmings as her main. I opted for the home made soup (tasty tasty) and the roast lamb and trimmings. Service was spot on and portions more than ample. If there was any disappointment it was we had no room for any sweets from the tempting list available. Diners can opt for the two or three course lunches which are very reasonably priced given the portions served and service from staff. My advice is if you are in the area drop in you will not be disappointed at the quality of food or service available.

The staff were extremely pleasant and not at all pushy. I could not believe the selection on the menu for Sunday lunch and it is not the place for people watching their waistlines. First off, I have to say that for the price of the meals here it is very good value. Under a tenner for a man course, £12.80 for two course or £15 for three courses. I thought the choice of starters was very good, and the portion sizes very large. Main courses weren't quite up to scratch - the Sunday roast was what you would expect somewhere catering on a large scale - pre-cut slices of meat, and unfortunately over greasy roasties and Yorkshire puddings. However, for the price and portion size it is good value - but somewhere to go with your grandparents or extended family, not an intimate or impressive meal.

Lunchtime visit -- three adults, once child and a baby. The Carnegie Lodge is in an unusual location, on the southern side of the A9 bypass which skirts the ancient town of Tain. Very well signposted from the A9, it adjoins a 70s housing estate. However, being right at the edge of the conurbation it has spectacular and uninterrupted views across the Dornoch Firth to Golspie. It's a modern building, but at least in this instance the patio on the side with the views has been constructed with a measure of good taste.Car parking is very adequate and the building was very pleasantly warm and comfortable.Clientele was mainly local on this occasion, with a sprinkling of patrons from origins clearly distant from the area.As for the meal, the soup was outstanding -- one of those rare occasions where no further seasoning was needed or desirable. My main course was acceptable. The member of the party who had roast beef declared it to be the best she's had in any hotel or restaurant. The fruit salad was impressive and delicious.Service was first-class.Bill for three adults and a child came to £49, and we couldn't have eaten more, supposing we tried.Make sure you get a seat facing the view to the North.

Carnegie Lodge Hotel is well known locally as a restaurant where quality comes first, and our umpteenth visit to this restaurant attests to that reputation. Starters and main courses are always exceptionally well thought out and cooked to perfection, as was again the case this time. The ONLY criticism is the dessert menu which is pedestrian and shows a lack of a top-class pastry chef in the kitchen; also, a cheese board option on the dessert menu would be a nice touch and take away the criticism of the dessert menu altogether.

Went here with a friend for dinner as past experiences have had me recommend the Carnegie as the best restaurant in town. Upon arrival we received a slightly cold reception from an older lady which contrasted greatly to the fantastic reception we received in December from two younger men. We sat in the rather cosy bar first for a couple of drinks which, be warned, are on the expensive side (£5.50 for large glass of wine) but there are plenty to choose from. 10 minutes later we were shown to our table through in the restaurant area which is very well presented with lovely carpets, a brilliant view and high quality napkins. I also appreciated the fact that water jugs were already on the tables which I don't see in many restaurants anymore. For starters we had haggis filos which were nicely presented but lacked any real punch and were a tad dry. We were then given sorbet in between our starters and mains which was a nice touch and had us excited for our main courses. The menu is heavily cream driven and lacks the variety of some other local restaurants but it was our preferred style of food anyway(mainly Scottish dishes). We both ordered the Chicken Highlander which I had had before at this restaurant. Unfortunately it was a bit too creamy this time around which we felt impaired the flavours of the dish. Plenty of side dishes came with the meal though and the portion was plentiful. The desserts menu was limited but we enjoyed the cheesecake nonetheless. Prices are fair and for the portion sizes you get, the Carnegie is well worth the value. The manager is very friendly and welcoming which made up for the slightly disinterested manner of the other two workers that dealt with us. Despite some of the minor flaws we experienced this time, I would still recommend the Carnegie to anyone looking for a high quality, Scottish infused restaurant in the Highlands. Will be returning.

The setting is nice and the restaurant is clean and spacious. The portions are large, however we didn't enjoy the quality of the food.Soup very salty and the half roast chicken had an aftertaste which usually comes from being frozen for a long time. The Skirlie wasn't particularly pleasant and the veg tasteless.Rather expensive for what you get really. If you like lots of food and quality is not the most important factor, then you should perhaps try it out.

Visiting family in Dornoch, and we wanted somewhere to go for Sunday lunch so we booked a table for four at the Carnegie Lodge a few miles away. We had seen the sign for this hotel many times but had never visited before. The hotel is in a lovely situation, slightly elevated with beautiful views over the Dornoch Firth. We were very pleasantly surprised - the dining room was quite large and nicely decorated and furnished with loads of staff on hand. It is obviously a popular venue with the locals, as the restaurant was full. The menu was large and quite varied, with an excellent choice of starters and main courses. We all ate different combinations, and the food was very good, with very generous portions. The roast dinners that were being served also looked excellent, and the wine list was quite good too.We finished off with desserts and cheese and biscuits and went home for a much needed walk on the beach! It was a great lunch and I would certainly recommend the Carnegie to anyone staying in the area.

We took my Mum for her 90th birthday Dinner and could not have chosen a better place. the staff were great, the quality and quantity of food perfect. Had a great time with great customer service as usual.Staff are amazing.Food was a mixed bag to be honest and I don't want to say it as I love coming here.My starter was lovely mussel and smoked haddock chowder so was my sisters haggis filosRest were mediocre at best.Mains were mainly a let down specials board of sweet chilli beef at 14.95 at tops were only worth 8-9.99 we'll overpriced Hungarian goulash same price was awful again only worth 8.99 The gammon was beautiful I was told your roast beef dinners are best but beef is a little hard.Your sweets are your biggest let downs I'm afraid you need to vastly improve on these.I won't stop coming here but will be selective on what I eat and hope you listen and change these areas.

Heather and Derek extended a warm, friendly welcome to us,as did their staff.Food was excellent and plentiful throughout the weekend, the wedding meal itself was beautiful. My nephew and his wife could not have wished for a better venue for their wedding.Nothing was too much trouble, even to lending my husband a much needed pair of braces.Special mention to Robert, who showed highland hospitality at its best.Rooms well stocked with tea, biscuits, fresh fruit and chocolates,we left with big smiles and full tummies.Thank you all

Have eaten here a number of times over the years and it is a nice place to go for a relaxing meal. Service is always good and the quality of the mains is good, although portion sizes can vary. Quality of chips and vegetables has declined and the coffee was dreadful - cold, tasted stewed and half a cup with no refill. Biggest issue is the place seems to be resting on its laurels a bit and the menu hasn't been changed in ages. A menu refresh please - it's too predictable. Will go to The Birch Tree as a better local alternative now.

Being a local resident in the Black isle myself and my wife decided to take advantage of the good weather and take a tour up North we decided to call in to the Carnegie for lunch we have eaten there before. When we arrived we were met and made welcome by the staff and they asked us if we would like to sit at our table right away but we decided to have a soft drink before we eat.We had the choice of two menu's lite-bite or the lunch menu.We decided on the lunch menu which had a great selection which also catered for vegetarian tastes .We had a first class two course lunch which was well cooked and the presentation was superb for £12 .50p per head.Well done Carnegie Lodge as usual thank you Great Staff

Not been here for a while as we had not been very impressed on previous visits The four walls in this restaurant/hotel are not the most interesting, it is a very dull boring place to be and not much imagination used for the design of the building or the decor. Therefore no ambianceThe menu goes on forever which means frozen food in my mind. The so called butterfly prawns were certainly straight out of the freezer, but were no more a butterfly prawn than me The gammon steak was very poor quality. Any salad was drowned in dressing. Prawn cocktail had everything bar the kitchen sink thrown in itThe most worrying thing is that you will find it hard to pick something from the menu that is not covered in some sort of sauceThe owners should get out more and please try Luigi's or the Royal Dornoch Hotel to find out how a restaurant is meant to be run

As a result of a recommendation from friends we booked a table here for four on Saturday evening. When we arrived we were shown to a table in the bar and ordered some drinks before perusing the menu. We were all equally impressed with the extensive menu which catered for all tastes. On top of the menu there were a couple of specials and numerous roasts of the day!We had to wait over 20 minuted for someone to take our order as it seemed we were forgotten about. However, the waitress who took our order was very friendly, which was the case with all members of staff which we came into contact with.3 of us ordered the butterfly king prawns for starters which were a bit of a let down as they were of the bought in frozen variety, though the salad accompanying the prawns was lovely and fresh. The main courses were a bit of a mixed bag depending on your selection. Between the 4 of us we had ordered breaded haddock, gammon steak hawaian, roast lamb (1 of the roasts of the day) and chicken ecosse (special). The lamb was perfect in both quantity and quality terms, the haddock was extremely fresh and is recommended, unfortunately the portion of chips which were requested to accompany the fish were under-cooked and tasteless, but being honest they weren't needed given the generous portion of fish and salad garnish. The chicken ecosse was served as an absolutely titanic portion which was off putting as there was no way more than half of it could be eaten by any standard sized adult. Also, there was no accompanying vegetables, or potatoes which would have been appreciated. Finally, the gammon which was perfectly well cooked but unfortunately covered by a huge gloop of 'gravy' and far too much melted cheese which completely overpowered the gammon.Due to the enormous size of the main courses only 1 of our group piped for a sweet, which was awful. The strawberry meringue was inedible due to how hard it was coupled with strawberries which have seen better days, and hard cream due to the pudding have been refrigerated for far too long. One of the reasons for giving this an average review was the confusion with paying the bill. We sat and waited for about 10 minuted trying to catch the attention of the waiting staff, however after being unsuccessful we went to the 'bar' at the end of the dining room hoping for success. Numerous members of staff continued to walk past without acknowledging us, and eventually we were tended to. The general feeling from our party was that once you had been served your meal the staff were no longer interested. To conclude I would say that the Carnegie Lodge is in a handy location with great parking, but the portion sizes were generally far too much for us which lead to a lot of waste at our table (something we are not a fans of) and the dining room itself lacked any atmosphere and was a tad sparse. Unfortunately we will not be returning.

We have had 2 similar experiences here - luke warm food. The first time we were referred to the owner when we complained. He was rude and more or less accused us of leaving the food on the plates for too long! We went back a second time and overheard the owner in an altercation with another couple. He should learn how to speak to his customers - as I was always told the customer is always right. We probably won't go back.

We booked for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Fabulous vibe, and the restaurant was really busy. There was a slight delay in being served, but the food we had was excellent. We ordered cauliflower pakora for starter to share with a bottle of water and bottle of sauvignon blanc. We ordered the winter salad with chicken and one without with a side of fries. All was delicious and will definitely go back. Including 10% tip total cost was £83.95.

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

I recently had the pleasure of spending a delightful day at Dores Inn, and I still find myself reminiscing about the experience six months later. Nestled along the shores of the iconic Loch Ness, this charming inn offers a perfect blend of stunning views, a warm atmosphere, and exceptional service. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely ambiance that sets the tone for a relaxing visit. The inn has ample seating, both indoors and outdoors, making it easy to find a cozy spot to enjoy the picturesque scenery. We opted for an outside table, and it turned out to be the best decision of the day. The views of the loch were absolutely breathtaking, providing a serene backdrop for our meal. Speaking of the meal, I must rave about the food—simply sublime! I usually find coleslaw unappealing, but Dores Inn's homemade version was a game changer. It was fresh, flavorful, and complemented our dishes beautifully. Every bite was a testament to the culinary care that goes into their offerings. After our satisfying meal, we joined a Rib-Boat journey on the loch, which was an exhilarating way to experience the surroundings. The thrill of speeding across the water, combined with the breathtaking views of the loch and its mythical charm, made for an unforgettable adventure. As a memento of our day, I couldn't resist purchasing one of their handmade crochet teddies of Nessie. It's now a cherished keepsake that brings back fond memories of our visit. To wrap up our day, we took a leisurely walk along the shoreline. The tranquility of the loch, coupled with the stunning natural beauty surrounding us, was the perfect ending to a fantastic day. Overall, Dores Inn exceeded my expectations in every way. From the lovely atmosphere and great views to the delectable food and friendly service, it’s a place I highly recommend. If you're looking for an exceptional day out near Loch Ness, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this gem. I still think about that wonderful day, and I can’t wait to return!
