Carib De L'Afrique in Hastings

I came to Hastings for a show at the White Rock and decided to get some here 25/05/2025 . Unfortunately it was so disappointing the beef suya was in such a small container of which half was salad . Suya is supposed to be meat with onions and tomatoes( not with lettuce). The efo riro was tasteless not made with Palm oil not tomatoes stew it was just green mush. I couldn't even eat it was that bad. What a disappointing visit. Definitely won't recommend this place to anyone

How far would you travel for food? I don’t often ask myself this question but Carib de l’Afrique made me ponder it as we waited for our starters. I had already been once to this fine-dining, African- and Caribbean-themed restaurant in Wellington Place, in the heart of Hastings. Last year my companion and I had an hour to spare before catching our train back to London. We decided to try this splash of brightness in the middle of a pretty drab part of Hastings. However, a slow service combined with the clock ticking meant we left the establishment with an empty belly. Not this time, though. My partner and I chose Carib de l’Afrique as the final stop before heading back to the Big Smoke. By then, we had already walked the hilly Stade Trail. We had truly earned our dinner. Also, this time the service was excellent. Carib de l’Afrique is a labour of love. It’s the creation of Islington-born Adebayo Olujobi. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere, and it prides itself on its fresh, flavourful food, and friendly owners. We visited during the May Bank Holiday weekend. It was a Saturday and the crowds were out enjoying Hastings annual Jack in the Green celebration. Garlands hung from buildings, Morris dancers performed in squares, and families paddled in the shallow waters on the coast. In the middle of all this, Carib de l’Afrique stood out like a baobab amongst crab apple trees. The aroma emanating from it contrasted nicely with the fast-food waft coming out of the McDonald’s opposite. The mix of lovers’ rock, reggae, and jazz pumping out of the restaurant’s 15-inch speaker was a balm to the ears. Our starter was spiced honey wings. It was a good choice as the kick wasn’t overpowering allowing the sweetness to seep through. The wings were also texture-perfect and juicy. We even saved some of the gravy for later. The star of the show, however, was the jollof rice. I’ve already said before that the Third World War won’t start in the Middle East or eastern Europe, but in west Africa. And the reason? Ownership over jollof rice. Restaurant owner Adebayo labelled his as “Nigerian jollof rice”. That’s asking for trouble. I’m sure that Ghanaians, Senegalese, Gambians, Malians, et al will have something to say about that. Even languages have been summoned to the debate over the origin of jollof rice. Gambians and Senegalese assert, reasonably in my view, that since they speak Wolof, then, Jollof (see what they did there?) rice belongs to them. Accompanying the jollof rice was goat curry for me whilst my partner went for the vegetarian curry. My goat curry was beautiful, the slow-cooked, off-the-bone meat was tender and the taste hearty. My girlfriend’s vegetarian curry was creamy and thick (we shared our food). She also had rice and peas. However, when jollof rice is on the table, I can’t look at any other rice in the same way. Call it being a faithful lover. Oh, yes, tables. And decor. Carib de l’Afrique is not just a restaurante, but also a learning centre. The table tops have stats on both African and Caribbean countries. By pure chance we were seated at the Nigeria table, but I also had a peek at the Rwanda one. The explosion of colour that greets the visitor outside segues inside settling on walls and cushions. The only disappointment was my choice of drink. I’d never tried Afrimalt and being a bit of a malt connoisseur I wanted to have a taste of this brand. It was a bit too watery for my liking. Nothing, however, should detract the visitor from the fact that Carib de l’Afrique makes reasonably priced good food. The restaurant is fun and attractive, in a friendly “in your face” kind of way. Adebayo strikes that fine balance between businessperson and amiable host, exuding vibes as warm as Tevin Campbell’s voice in his timeless 90s classic “Can We Talk?” These are all perfect reasons to go back. Because when what’s on offer is that good, the mileage is the last thing on my mind.

Sat out in the sun, music playing, chilled vibe and great service but the best bit was the beautiful flavourful food 💛

Food was amazing;authentic Caribbean food served with many spices to my goat curry making it an excellent dish,this was my first visit and i will be returning to try more Carribbean dishes .👍

I was feeling a bit down when I was attracted into Carib De l'Afrique by the music. The wonderful jerk chicken, deliciously caramelized fried plantain and all my favourite songs soon put a smile on my face. 😄 Great vibe and great service!

Lovely place, amazing food, awesome owner and really nice music and atmosphere. We had some home-made patties, the fish one was our favorite. We had as well the rice&beans and the jerk chicken. Ops! And the Rum Punch that was just too nice to be alcoholic! Owner was very friendly. It seemed busy With locals and take aways, normal With such a nice home-made food and for a good price. Definately going back Next time in Hastings We loved It

We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance, and what a fantastic surprise it turned out to be! The owner greeted us so warmly and made sure our food was prepared quickly for takeout. The jerk chicken was absolutely perfect – flavorful, juicy, and with just the right amount of heat. You can really taste the passion behind the cooking. And the rum punch? Incredible. Fruity, strong, and perfectly balanced. A place with a big heart and even bigger flavors – highly recommended! Greetings from Germany!

Where do I begin! The staff are lovely, the atmosphere is amazing, I would of took pictures of the food but I blinked and it was already in my belly😋 I got brown stew chicken and my family got the curry goat, it was delicious!!! We also got a patty and it was cooked to perfection☺️ I must recommend their home made hot sauce!!!!!!!!! Very spicy but delicious it gives your food a perfect kick🥵🥵 if I lived around here I’d be here 24/7 I won’t lie😋. The only thing I’d say is it’s a bit pricey but worth every penny!🥰

Myself and my husband, had a delicious meal here. The food was very tasty…. Lots of layered flavours, without excessive heat. The owner was very knowledgable and obviously passionate about food. A particular highlight was the Jollof Rice, and Beef with Spinach Stew.

A Hidden Gem of African Caribbean Flavours!!! I can confidently say it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by warm, friendly staff who made us feel right at home. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, setting the perfect tone for what turned out to be an exceptional meal. I ordered a spinach and beef was rich, flavourful, and oh so tender, It had just the right balance of spice. Paired this with smokey jollof rice which was perfectly seasoned and carried a delicious, subtle charred aroma, the meal was nothing short of mouthwatering. To top it off my the cocktails were on point! Fresh and fruity! Both alcoholic and non alcoholic were great! If you’re looking for bold flavours, genuine hospitality, and a true taste of African/Caribbean food this spot is a must! I’ll definitely be coming back for more!!!! 🫶🏼

You have to experience it yourself. This being one of the first I’ve been to in the area, it’s truly amazing how many people don’t know about it. Seriously, if you’re in Hastings and want some Afro-Carribean, come here. Even if you don’t want some, try it at least! This place does it best

The food was reheated from the freezer, with a very hard meat. Portion are very small even for children. The staff refuse to give extra sauce. I advice people to Avoid that place. It’s a rip off. It’s a scam.

Wanted to grab some lunch in Hastings and this caught my eye. Fast service from a friendly waitress who described the dishes well. They came quite quickly and were delicious. Well spiced, although for me not enough and asked for and got a small dish of extra-hot and very delicious chilli sauce. Would make a beeline there if I were in Hastings for lunch again. Had goat curry and Jallop rice.

I have often brought my friends and family to this venue on their visits - and we are never disappointed. The food is fantastic and includes one of our favourites - the legendary goat curry! The host is cheery and friendly and the atmosphere is always relaxed and friendly. Over my many visits the quality has never waned - and I am sure we will continue to visit this great establishment!

Lovely host and setting, but overall the food lacked any punch and the portions were on the small side. Obviously, establishments have their own recipes, but for us the Jerk chicken was very different to other Jamaican Jerk. No taste of Scotch Bonnet or allspice and a very thin, soy sauce type, sauce. It comes as two small pieces of chicken on the bone, so portion size didn't feel like good value. The plantain was tasty but came as tiny pieces (quartered slices) in a small ramekin, so again didn't feel like good value. Goat curry was tasty, and a better portion size, but didn't pack the real spicy punch which I'd hoped for. Enjoyed the Jollof rice, which overall was probably the most tasty dish.

This is a true gem of an establishment. Authentic African and Caribbean food which is perfectly cooked. I had the vegetarian bean stew with rice and peas. The home made chili sauce is amazing. The owner was very friendly and he definitely knows what he is doing when it comes to the menu.

Thank you to Bayo and his stuff for making my mums birthday soo special. Such great food that can be tailored to everyone’s palates. I love my food spicy and he accommodated for that. Whilst my niece hates spice. We explained that to the staff and were so surprised by how much we loved the food and how quickly they tailored it to us . If you are in the area craving Caribbean or African food please give this a try. Or if you’d like to try Caribbean/ African food for the first time it is a great place to start. The service is amazing and the vibes are high. If we are in the area we will definitely be back !!!

After a gruelling long shift I was in desperate need of a good meal before heading back for the second half of my shift. I decided to pop into Carib De L'Afrique in Hastings, and it turned out to be just what I needed. From the moment I stepped in, the warm and vibrant atmosphere immediately lifted my spirits. The decor, with its rich African influence, was inviting and colourful, setting the perfect backdrop for what promised to be an enjoyable dining experience. The menu offered a delightful array of traditional Caribbean and African dishes, and I was spoilt for choice. I finally settled on the goat curry, which was cooked off the bone to suit the preference of European customers. I must say, it was nothing short of delicious. The curry was rich and aromatic, with tender pieces of goat that practically melted in the mouth. The rice and peas that accompanied it were flavourful and well-cooked, making for a thoroughly satisfying meal. The portions were generous, which was much appreciated given the long hours ahead. The service was equally commendable. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure that everything was to my liking without being overbearing. It’s clear they take pride in what they do, and it shows in both the quality of the food and the overall experience. In all, Carib De L'Afrique provided me with a much-needed break and a taste of home-cooked comfort in the midst of a hectic day. Whether you're a fan of Caribbean cuisine or just looking for a hearty, satisfying meal in Hastings, I’d highly recommend giving this place a try.

We were looking forward to eating here and certainly not disappointed- the food is delicious, authentic and tasty, the restaurant has a lovely vibe and the staff are so friendly and helpful. I only wish this place was in my doorstep!

Really disappointed with our recent order.For £42 and only 4 dishes we expected a high quality meal and good portion sizes.The beef stew was flavourless and tiny almost pea sized bits of meat throughout the stew.The jerk chicken we ordered 2 portions of as we knew from past experience you are only given 2 pieces of chicken per £8 dish!When we last tried it it was worth the price at a push.But this was again flavourless and the chicken skin was flabby.The curry goat again had such a small amount of meat in it would not have been sufficient for one person let alone 2!And we aren't a greedy or over eating couple.I had to make cous cous at home to go along side the food (I never ordered rice as I expected it to be too much with the dishes we ordered.Even with chinese & indian takeaways we don't order rice as its too filling) and I added nandos sauce and beef stock to this meal so basically cooked for myself and it tasted awful & cost £42.Not acceptable!Won't order from here again.

The food was incredible & had plenty of options for vegans! Would defo recommend to anyone who wants to try something exotic. Was a little disappointed they didn’t sell jackfruit anymore but got to try new dish’s that pleasantly surprised my tastebuds! Partner and I visited while on holiday in Hastings and wow. Beautiful lay out, great music, very chilled vibe, lovely helpful service from the lady who knew her stuff for sure and most of all incredible food. Hands down one of my fav places I’ve eaten in years. Also to add my partner is vegan and was very well catered for.

Shocking!! This place is not value for money & the food is terrible! I went yesterday to have lunch. They do a deal for £10. I added an extra piece of chicken for £4 as they said the normal portion isn’t that big. When I got my meal it wasn’t even edible, and it got chucked straight in the bin. The rice was cooked wiv an inch of its life. It was like mush! They obviously freeze the meals & re-heat them. The chicken was seriously burnt, the sauce was oily water, tasteless. I was given no salad which was meant to be included. And also paid extra for more chicken which I didn’t get. £15 for that meal is not value for money. 3 tiny pieces of chicken & very poor rice. If been to the Caribbean many times & eaten in a lot of the same places & it’s been the worst ever! I also complained & was asked to bring the meal back if I want a refund. After sending the pictures over & then I get blocked by them. Terrible

Friendly staff nice restaurant. Food was cooked okay but tiny portions and had no spice ! Flavour was nice but incredibly mild wouldn't call it jerk chicken. My toddler could eat it no problem which says it all 😅

Absolutely delicious goat curry with rice and peas, best I have tasted in a long time. Not too spicy but full of flavour. Great portion size and perfect flavours. I have picked up a take away menu and am looking forward to trying other dishes.

The atmosphere and food here is amazing! Me and my friend kept seeing this place and loved its vibe so we finally decided to go in and it did not disappoint! Absolutely wild find in Hastings. Superb and authentic Jamaican and Nigerian cuisine. And I mean superb!!!!!! Caramelised Plantains are so good they ought to be illegal. The home made chilli sauce is hot, balanced and the kind you wish you could buy bottled to take home with you. For a culinary treat, pop in sometime. You'll be hooked.

Amazing! I came in to this restaurant to try it out because I loved the decor, I was then thrilled with an amazing meal and un-beatable service, we were instantly made to feel at home. The food was bursting with flavour and I would 100% recommend everyone to try. Fantastic all round :)
