Carbonara At N49 in Cheshire West and Chester

Wonderful evening in an incredible historic building, eating amazing authentic Italian food, cooked and served to us by a gorgeous father and son. Heaven!

On a weekend trip to Chester, we decided to eat at Carbonara and we weren’t disappointed. The food, service and ambience were all great. We had the mixed platter consisting of chicken breast, fillet steak, salmon fillet, king prawn, scallops, sea bass, calamari, diced potatoes and tomato and onion salad. This was a perfect size for us to share and was extremely tasty. If we’re ever back in Chester, we will certainly return. Be aware that the restaurant is not at street level but up a set of stairs above the street level shops so is a bit hard to spot if you’re not familiar with the area.

Fantastic meal. First time, so chose the signature carbonara as starter, followed by sausage served with sautéed potatoes and broccoli romana - washed down with a very respectable Chianti. Great food, incredibly friendly staff (owner and son). Highly recommend!

Such a disappointment after reading reviews . Resultant lacked any atmosphere and service was very slow. Waited 20 mins for our pre booked table. Table was up against a very hot radiator which was uncomfortable by the end of the meal. Prawn started was just about cooked with the sea bass for the main meal overdone. Cancelled our drinks order after waiting over 30mins. Very poor overall experience

Best Italian dining experience I've had outside of Rome! Personal touch to the service, delicious food, and very relaxed atmosphere. Can't fault it, and highly recommend. Excited to go back.

Absolutely perfect authentic Italian food! Amazing team of people dedicated to the craft, beautiful authentic carbonara, fast, friendly service. The pasta dishes were absolutely life changing and I would recommend this place to anyone! Bellissima!

Yesterday 4 of us went to have lunch, I love Italian food and was really looking forward to try this restaurant and I really not disappointed. The atmosphere was really overwhelming, the staff been really nice with us, and last but not least every course was delicious 😋 highly recommend!

Went there this last weekend with family from out of town. Good reviews meant we were really looking forward to a nice meal. Restaurant was not busy - but some event upstairs may have impacted our service? We did not have a good experience. Starters took 25 minutes. Main courses took another 45 minutes after they were finished. We had two of the daily specials - seafood risotto - and the "risotto" was a bowl of mushy, pappy unpleasant rice. Truly the worst Italian meal I have ever been served in a restaurant. The waiter saw my face when I took a bite and asked how everything was and he acted most offended that I told him it was not good. They did offer to replace the food but having waited an hour - there was no way I was going to risk that. We ate about 1/3 of the meal due to being hungry. The steaks were good though I am sure the fillet was not a full 8 oz. Of the two seabass fillets - one was perfect one was dry. Potatoes too oily. Pasta dish was good. They comp'd us one risotto and 2 glasses of wine - but not in a gracious way. Overall £240 and left feeling cheesed off and annoyed. Per your reply - A couple of things to point out: On the way to the Chistmas markets I came in 45-50 minutes before our reservation to ask if it was possible to add a 6th person to the reservation and you indicated we were already going to be at a 6 person table and no problem. So I left and returned at 7:25pm. I am not sure why this is relevant to a review about bad food. Whether your restaurant was full (it was not) or half empty or completely empty - you seem to be saying customers can expect poor service (45 minutes between courses is poor service) and bad food if you are very busy. Either that or it is used as an excuse. In your overly positive summary telling me how my family felt about the experience - you left off the second bad bowl (so two) of mushy unpleasant risotto - one overcooked/dried seabass - one under sized fillet and oily potatoes on multiple plates. In addition to trying to reinvent the timescale. Lastly - in my review I mentioned you taking off one bowl of mushy risotto from the bill and two complimentary glasses of wine. So I was fair. I also mentioned your attitude - which I am certain any neutral reader will clearly see demonstrated in your reply. I've no problem paying £240 or more for a great dining experience for 6 - the point is it was not great or even good. ciao indeed.

Very close to our hotel, and managed to get a booking within the hour. Food was great, my steak was cooked perfectly and partners pasta was great the only downside which stops it from being 5 stars, the chap who either works there or knew the place kept going in and out everytime the door opened, the cold draft let in - made me feel uncomfortable! Apart from that perfect! - the host made us feel super welcome

I was satisfied with the food, really great, so delicious, I wouldn’t change anything on them. The father and the son are the owner, so kind and friendly people. They said goodbye by shaking our hands and with a nice smile. I recommend this place ☺️

Disappointed with our visit . Long wait for food .Steak and saute pots overcooked . and.the top floor very cold .Will return but not on a Saturday eve .and book for the ground floor .!!

Food was amazing. Service was amazing. Tried tuna steak for the first time and oh my word I could of ate it again. The general manager was welcoming and so was his son and partner. Would highly recommend this restaurant and I will come back

What a super little restaurant! On a very cold and sleety night in Chester this was a very welcoming venue. The father and son staff who served us are so friendly and courteous. The meal was superb. After hearing another couple raving about their dessert my husband went with the tiramisu and agreed it was the best he’d ever tasted. There were a lot of Italians in there too which is always a good sign. We would definitely go back there again.

Came here on Friday with my partner the food was awful I ordered pollo chicken in garlic and lemon sauce it came in a horrible saturated in a greasy oil all over what was sautéd potatoes they where new potatoes soggy oil cheaply cooked and in an oily inedible sauce my partner couldn’t eat his carbonara because it made him sick what was in my plate I ask server if was in cream sauce they declined in telling me it obviously wasn’t complained to the server of the food brought manager over and he argued with me was very rude to me and a nasty awful attitude I was forced into paying for a meal which was awful do not visit here the manager and family run business do not care about customers or service appalling restaurant which I hope will be closed soon also the waiters where far to over the top trying to be nice at every opportunity ,Sir this Sir that suites you sir 😂 🤦‍♂️ it was all false I will not be returning will be telling people about my experience which ruined my evening I work for a hotel and meal review guide and I can honestly say I’ll give it one star 🌟 at the most also people I’ve spoke to in Chester have also had a very bad experience here it’s overpriced inedible food they have obviously paid people to give good reviews on here 😂 👍

Family restaurant owned and run by Italians, so everything is very authentic. The food is wonderful, don't expect your usual piazzas or pastas, the waiter can tell you the provenance of the ingredients and it isn't Asda! Lots of atmosphere and friendly and knowledgeable staff. As it is in the upper level of the Rows it is rather hidden, but well worth searching out.

This really is a proper Italian family run trattoria in a delightful ancient building with superb ingredients and cookery and impeccable friendly service. If you only visit one restaurant in Chester make it this one.

We stumbled across Carbonara at No 49 by chance, when we visited Chester, and what a hidden gem it turned out to be. We dined there for lunch and ordered from the lunch menu. The service was fantastic, and the food was delicious and authentic. The owner chatted to us about the food, as we were asking a few questions, and even showed us around the upstairs of the restaurant, where you could see all the old beams etc. Great place and one we will be visiting again when we return to Chester.

We visited Carbonara today and had the most delicious lunch despite it being the chef’s first few weeks in the kitchen. The service was second to none and we were treated to a peek at the amazing rooms upstairs . Julius was an excellent host and we will definitely make a return visit. Highly recommended

Visited today, was offered a table but despite waiting for 10 - 15 mins staff were elusive and we didn't fancy playing hide and seek to place a food and drink order, so we left.

A fantastic night at this gem of an Italian restaurant owned by Sam and ran by his son Julius. The food was delicious and the staff are so friendly. Will definitely return.

Loved this place when it first opened and went for lunch several times. Not been in the evening before but decided to try an evening meal with family and friends. The food was very disappointing and over priced. The room was cold. The young waiter was very attentive and brought a small electric heater to our table...sorry Carbonara we will not return shame.....

This is a very special place. We enjoyed being in the historic place in the Rows in Chester. We felt very much looked after by the Padrone who welcomed us with a handshake. We had such a good experience at Carbonara . The service was excellent, the team were friendly and attentive and you could really tell this is a family run restaurant. The food was delicious and freshly cooked. Highly recommend anyone to visit.

It was tasty and the service was good. But it was bit pricey for what it is. I paid 28 pounds for one carbonara and a glass of wine.

Average is an overstatement, food did not feel fresh. Bread and butter was toasted bread with a flat poppadom style thing and drizzled in oil. Bread n Butter means fresh bread n butter. Gamberoni starter was grilled, looked ok, but lacking flavour. No finger bowl until the mains and no courteousy check meant I couldn't ask for salt & pepper to season things up a tad. Main course, Frutti de Marè felt microwaved. Certainly not fresh seafood. I must say it's not good. We both felt the same and we left the mains, paid and off we trot. It was not a good experience.

Simply the Best! Marco is the best host and makes all his guests feel so welcome. Rambo the chef is amazing and his food is superb. The whole team work amazingly well together and you feel that you are dining with the family that you never knew you had. If you visit Chester and do not eat at Carbonara at no 49 then you will have missed out... PS. The plates and serving dishes are of excellent quality, British made, strong and durable! :-)

We are home from this amazing holiday and can't stop thinking about the delicious food at Carbonara. Julius was so kind. He attended to us from the moment we stepped in the door. They are located across from 5 guys & to find this location you have to look up for the sign on the second floor. Great fine dining experience. We hope to visit again.

The staff here were ever so kind and attentive to us all night , making our last family meal so special as we’re moving abroad soon, they made this meal above and beyond. We would highly recommend anyone looking for a friendly atmosphere and amazing food, this is the place to be. (My dad is also highly critical and he really loved it, big statement 😊)

I am really sorry to write this, as we went with my eldest daughter (who recommended the restaurant as she has had some lovely meals here previously) as a leaving meal for her sister on Friday night. Service was very slow and we had to consistently try and catch a waiter to ask to order, one waiter said they had no Peroni left due to them having been busy as Chester races were on, and the other waiter later said they had Peroni and it wasn't a problem. Both tuna dishes came very overcooked and then they only had one piece left which they split in half and then added a couple of large prawns to (and fair enough didnt charge for). The owner/manager did apologise and also brought an extra bottle of wine free but then only 1 person was really drinking wine as 2 were driving, but even though I tried to stop him, he wouldn't take no for an answer. My husband ate most of his small carbonara even though it was extremely peppery (as he felt he couldn't complain anymore) and my younger daughters pasta meal was extremely bland. Two of us ordered the same desert but one was in a ramekin and the other wasn't and then they brought out 5 shots of limoncello, which again is nice of them but 2 of us were driving! We still paid £177 which I feel was the biggest waste of money ever, and although I know they did try and improve things along the way, we still all felt the night was completely ruined as we hadn't experienced the type of meal out we had expected or wanted. My eldest daughter was very embarrassed at having recommended it and I am sorry but I wouldn't go back

Yesterday 11 of us rocked up here without pre booking following a funeral. The team here were AMAZING! They pulled a table together for us and looked after us all night! Glasses were never empty, they cheered our loved one with us, even the chef Rambo! The food was amazing! I can’t recommend this family run restaurant enough! Thank you so much! You made a very sad day a lot more bearable!

A beautiful place with lovely staff. After me and my wife came here we decided to bring my sister and her husband to try. It's a great place with fantastic food. It stands out not just because of its beautiful food, but everything is done in a traditional way, not just the typical English way, which keeps it unique. Staff are really friendly and look after you, even giving you a little history as your seated. Highly recommend.

What a stunning hidden gem! I'm a big lover of Italian cuisine, having experienced most Italian establishments in Chester, I have to say this place is my now new favourite!! I don't know how I've not found this place before now but I'm so glad I have. A special thanks to Sam, what an energetic host you are! So full of life and passion. It's a rare quality to have these days. Food was excellent. We had no idea of the races being on, so a particularly manic Saturday but even so. Sam was a fantastic host. My partner and I look forward to our next visit very soon.

We ended up booking here last night as our usual Italian was fully booked. We’d found it online and didn’t have any opinions to go off, but we couldn’t have been more impressed! Everything was impeccable, the food, tbe service, the staff. Great little family run Italian in a fab location. Stunning seating area outside and the Italian man who owns it is amazing! Made us laugh the whole time we were there and made us feel very comfortable. His young son who worked there was also great, his customer services skills for his age was second to none! It was also very busy and we were never waiting long for food or drinks, we’ll definitely be spreading the word to our friends and family about this place! 100% recommend 😁

I have been very impressed by this place and the quality of the food, you can feel the passion that Samuel and his team put in every dish they prepare. If you are looking for an authentic Italian restaurant, especially if you love Rome typical food, this is a must place to go!

Quite simply the best Italian restaurant we have experienced in the UK. The food is superb and the service excellent. Don't waste your time (and money) going anywhere else for authentic and delicious Italian food.

We only popped in for a Sunday lunch and so glad we did will be back and another ten. So worth going to you won't be disappointed. Food is rustic proper Italian, carbonara was incredible but starters and desserts and cocktails all incredible. If you don't like it then you don't like real Italian 🤷‍♀️ we were checked on constantly, service was the best we have had in a while lucky to get such attentive service don't feel like it exists anymore but these guys were on it. Perhaps a fortuitous stop on a rainy evening but what a wonderful experience. Food and service excellent, possibly best meal we have enjoyed all year, if not longer. Pollo Limone sooo tasty, my wife’s fillet steak equally good. Definitely worth a visit if in Chester. Just overnighting ourselves on would be back for seconds.

Wow! Where do I start! Well, the food was outstanding. I had the fish risotto which was excellent. My wife had their signature dish, carbonara which I also tried and was very tasty. Then the hosts. A family run business and front of house staff know their dishes and how they were prepared. Attention to detail was second to none. We’ll be back very soon and would certainly recommend this restaurant.

What an amazing find this place is. Amazing authentic food and the service is out of this world. The owners daughter had in fact just been to Rome and come back with some inspiration. We had the pistachio inspired Roma dessert made just that day. Would certainly recommend this place to all.

Wow! What an amazing find. 5 star service, atmosphere and food!! Love that it is a family run business too. We sat outside and ordered two pasta dishes along with garlic bread. The quality was amazing and everything was so fresh! If you want real Italian food THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE! Highly recommend and definitely give it a go next time you are in Chester.

After a recommendation from a friend, I brought my partner here for an evening meal for her birthday. The ambience and customer service we received were both fantastic, the staff couldn't do enough for us and the food was out of this world. We'll definitely be returning here in the not too distant future

My old PA and her husband were visiting Chester on a three day break. We worked together for 5 years and have kept in contact on FB. I wanted to introduce Mary and Michael to Shirley and Evie and recalling their preference on Italian we arranged to meet at this beautiful restaurant As ever the service and attendance where friendly personnel and polite and we received a warm welcome We all opted for main courses and desserts myself and Michael the obligatory Carbonara and Evie grilled Sea Bass and Mary Fruit de Mare spaghetti Washed down with an excellent Gavi do Gavi and Tiramisu a wonderful evening was had Highly recommended if you want a family feeling for your meal

delicious food and the family are wonderfully kind, we feel like one of the family for sure! they were beautifully kind to my nana and they found my mums bracelet which was from my late grandma! will be taking every family member here when they visit. period.

I cannot recommend this place enough. Went in with a family of 4, two young kids. At no point did we feel out of place, on the contrary in fact we were made to feel like family in their home. The two guys running front of house, owner and his son I think, were so lovely and genuine. The carbonara was on another level. So good. My son has multiple allergies and they happily accommodated him and his meal was fantastic. The cocktails were good, but if you enjoy quality food you need to visit this place. Even the chef came out at the end of the evening and was just as lovely as the FOH guys. We honestly can’t wait to go back.

One of the best restaurants in Chester full stop. Great quality food and the family are just wonderful. My mum left a bracelet from a late relative there by accident and they phoned us up to tell us from my number on the reservation. They are a kind hard working family who are incredibly good at what they do. The most delicious food, drink and desserts 🤤

A cozy Italian on Chester’s historic Rows. We had a lovely meal as a party of 6 here, the staff could not have been more attentive to us, we were made such a fuss over and even shown some of the buildings interesting history. Food was very well prepared, menu had a good selection of classic dishes but also many specials offered. Freshly home cooked with new recipes being added. Once the place got busy it was a little loud, so if you prefer a quieter dining experience maybe go early like we did (6-6:30pm). From a price point the food options for mains are around £15 and up, and as with most places the drink options is were your bill total will increase. I will absolutely visit again.

Finally, we got round to trying Carbonara. The experience kicked off a tad late but, we were asked, ‘Do you like Olives?’ And a ‘free’ bowl of Olives arrived; much welcomed. When booking we had asked for a table upstairs & assured of such. But, it was lovely to be by the front door : it being a warm night. My Arancinj was superb: best I’d eaten in the U.K. & matched such eaten many times in Italy. Carbonara is one of those dishes : every Italian housewife does it better! This was certainly authentic, but wouldn’t get five stars… Couldn’t resist trying the Tiramisu; again another measuring stick & once again like the starter, it held its own. The wine; we had the Montepulciano (we checked it was D’Abruzzo) one we didn’t know! But, hailed from Tollo, not far from where we have our Italian place. There are much better wines, but at point of retail in a U.K. restaurant @ £35? Probably, a tad more than one might wish to pay when eating out in the U.K. It was a very pleasant evening, staff were totally engaging.

Date night here 27th April 24. Authentic family run Italian and arguably the best Italian restaurant in Chester. Friendly service, ( we got a tour of upstairs which dates back 1650) great food , full of home flavour , relaxed atmosphere. So full we couldn’t fit in dessert , but hey it’s an extra excuse to come back !

Little hidden gem in the city. Lovely family run restaurant. Great service and authentic Italian food. We had the lemon pasta to start (off the specials), I had the rib eye steak, that was cooked to perfection and my partner had the tuna, again cooked perfectly. He had the apple cake and strawberries and I had the peaches. Really refreshing and a lovely way to end the meal. We was even treated with a glass of lemonchello. We will definitely be back

We ate here today and I must say it is one of the best eateries around food excellent, a warm welcome and great and relaxing atmosphere would recommend this lovely restaurant and if you are in Chester visiting give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

Went a couple of time and the food is really good. Only one small note: the service could improve because we were a group of 6 and some of us got their pasta cold probably because they were waiting to have all the plates ready.

Fantastic meal and service at this family run restaurant. Everyone loved their dishes and portion sizings were VERY generous. My carbonara tasted just like I’d had in Italy - with no cream! The tiramisu was also the best I’ve had EVER. Sam, the owner, and his daughter were so friendly- it felt like we’d been invited into their home as friends.

Absolutely great food and amazing service.

Underwhelming experience. So wanted to like this place, but was sadly disappointed. Chicken was dry and hard to eat. Sautéed potatoes were very soggy and the rest of the plate was salad dripping in oil. No table check until we had finished as the young waiter was absorbed with his phone and sharing a Chinese with his friend. DO THE JOB FOR WHICH YOU ARE BEING PAID!! Will not return or recommend.

Came here with my girlfriend for our anniversary meal and wasn’t disappointed.It has a really good feel to the place.We was given a warm welcome and made to feel at home.The food was delicious and the wine was great.We really enjoyed our evening and the service was very good,Julius who served us was very polite and really enjoyable to talk to.I guess that’s one of the reasons why it feels so homely.We will definitely be going back to enjoy another meal together.

I love this place, it is perfect for a romantic night out, the music is amazing and the food is the BEST I've had in years, the prices are also pretty cheap for what it offers. The place also has amazing customer service, especially from Sam!

Visited as a couple pre-New Year for Dinner. Small restaurant at 1st floor level on Bridge street inside the Chester city walls. Staff, including the owner were fantastic start to finish, attentive, but not overbearing and genuinely very friendly and welcoming. The menu offers many things to choose from all with a traditional Roman twist that makes them a little different for the better from most Italian restaurants. Everything we ate from start to finish tasted fantastic, with the owner taking time to explain the subtle differences between their Roman dishes and other italian cooking - for example thy don’t use parmesan, which just makes things like their pestos even more amazing to taste! Prices were also very reasonable! We thoroughly enjoyed eating here, will be back again and would highly recommend.

Absolutely loved this place. Food was excellent. The staff were brilliant and so attentive. Loved the experience. Will be going back.

Our first trip to Carbonara on New Year’s Eve was fantastic! Our host Sam (Gary) was fun, friendly and courteous. The food was excellent prepared by an amazing crazy Italian 🇮🇹 Most definitely our go-to Chester Italian for 2024.

You could not ask for a more authentic, rustic, and atmospheric Italian restaurant! The food is perfect! The pasta, the fish, the meat, the appetisers, all prepared superbly! Sam the owner makes you feel so welcome when you walk into the restaurant and his son and daughter are just as polite and welcoming! A truly amazing family run business! We've tried nearly every item on the menu and each one is delicious! Why is 5 the maximum number of stars I can choose? I wish I could give more!!!

This has been probably one of the best Carbonara I have ever had. The service was also so quick and the atmosphere was very high level but keeping at the same time the simplicity that comes from the Italian hospitality. Probabilmente una delle migliori carbonare che io abbia mai mangiato. Il servizio è stato davvero veloce e l’atmosfera molto curata mantenendo al contempo la semplicità che contraddistingue l’ospitalità italiana. Touché!

Walked in in the off chance....Managed to get a table for 2 yesterday evening... Sam, Julius and Sophie, were brilliant. Cracking little family run business, Superb food and service. Will be returning next time I'm in Chester... Thank you..... Will(West Ham)

Terrific meal and service. Only downside was a draught coming from the upstairs, which is well worth a look - ask the staff about the old ship's beams

Wow!! I am speechless!!! From hospitality, to wine, beer and fresh authentic Italian food especially for gluten free was faultless!! Seriously the best meal my husband and I have eaten which was great value for money. Awesome family ran restaurant with endless options than we will continue to come bavk to! Me and my family have been to carbonara a few times now and the first couple of times were great but somehow the quality has started to lack and so have the portion sizes, especially the puddings. I had a tiramisu and my brother had a cheese board. The tiramisu was extremely extremely small, and my brothers cheese board only consisted of a cheddar cheese and some grapes which wasn’t the best. I hope this place gets up to its usual standards as we love to visit.

Per il cibo ci vorrebbero 6 stelle eh! Qualità eccelsa, il nome del ristorante è una garanzia, la vera carbonara, quella autentica, quella che quando la mangi nessuno fiata, la trovate qui. Samuel è un oste che vi farà sentire a vostro agio dal primo all'ultimo minuto della vostra permanenza. Ormai per me è un punto di riferimento. Consigliato (ma cosa ve lo dico a fare)!!!
