Captains Fish and Chips in Brighton and Hove

I traveled from Colorado, USA to the London for work and I had the opportunity to bring along my father with me. He was born in the UK and as we were planning various things to do, he had reminisced about going down to the coast as a child to play in the arcades and eating the best fish and chips. As he was telling me about his childhood, I knew immediately I wanted to relive it with him. We were able to catch a quick train to Brighton from London and on the trip down I started to do my research on finding a great place to eat our lunch and landed on Captain’s. A great place right on the water by the pier. After my dad and I played in the arcade on the pier and bought Brighton Rock candy to enjoy on the trip back to London we headed over to Captain’s. As we walked in, we were happily greeted and brought to our table. We both ordered the Fish and Chip’s and I got an extra side of fried scampi. To drink, my dad got a coke and I went for the Brixton Brewery West Coast IPA. Our drinks came right away, and I have to say the Brixton IPA was great! This is coming from a guy living in Colorado beer country. After some chatting between my dad and I our cooked to order meal came out. The batter used at Captain’s is from a 35-year-old secret recipe and only the highest quality fish and locally sourced potatoes are used. I knew I was in for something good. As we took our first bites it was evident we found the right place. The fish was perfectly fried. The outside was crisp, not crunchy and the fish was tender, moist and delicious on the inside. The chips were cut the exact right length, fried golden brown with excellent crisp on the outside and the precise balance of fluffy on the inside. I was super happy about ordered the scampi too as that was a nice extra treat. We even got an extra basket of chips on the house to top us off! The wait staff and Pam were superb! All took the time to speak with us and really made this a great experience for me and my dad reliving his youth. I can understand why it was so memorable for him and now thanks to Captain’s and their crew it has become an everlasting memory for me too! I will be back with my children soon and highly recommend this great establishment. Cheers!

Absolutely loved the fish and chips from here. The fish was so beautifully cooked and chips very good too. Nice atmosphere and price point. Staff friendly and attentive. It was a chilly day so ate inside the restaurant which was clean and comfortable. Would recommend. 😄

Not gonna lie, I've had better fish and chips before, but this doesn't necessarily mean that Captain Fish and Chips were bad. The fish tasted nice but was a bit oily, just as the chips. The chips were okay but not freshly cut, probably frozen. When they brought us the fish and chips, I was shocked at how little chips were there, but they immediately told us that we could refill it anytime for free. I think this is great because I refilled mine three times, and every chippy should do this to reduce food waste. The fish and chips were reasonably priced at 15 pounds for somewhere catered towards tourists, but keep in mind that it does not come with mushy peas or curry sauce. Additionally, the staff were very kind. I think they asked three times if everything was okay and also asked us to refill our chips when it was finished. They also have outdoor seating if you want to be even closer to the ocean. Overall, Captain's Fish and Chips is a decent option for a quick, casual meal by the sea.

Wow I had the codbites and chips and it was to die for. Billy gave me his home made tartar sauce and it was heavenly. I highly recommend coming here

Everything about this place was spot on, staff lovely, perfect fish and chips, decent price, proper mug of tea and if you can manage it free top up of chips ! Loved it

Okay but over priced and not very large portions, we had fish chips and peas £16.00 , eating area outside could do with a tidy up

Great fish & chips - good portions and freshly cooked so hot and tasty. We were eating outside - plenty of tables and good shade from the parasols. Definitely worth a visit.

I’d have been very nice about the food here anyway - currently looking at clean chip trays from the whole family - but on top of that, they were kind enough to replace my sister in law’s order when a seagull managed to poop directly into it even before she managed to pick up a fork. Excellent views of the sea. Would recommend a table with an umbrella in future.

The fish and chips at Captain’s were great! The chips were large chip shop chips, freshly cooked and seasoned nicely with salt. The large cod fish was beautifully cooked, moist and coated in a lovely light batter. Definitely a good value for money meal, tummy filling and would highly recommend. It reminded me of Friday night fish and chips when I was a child. Lovely memories.🥹

Excellent food and service. Vegan ice cream was good . Veggie burger with fresh chips we had. Seating was nice and sun was nice.

Visited after checking out the reviews on here, expected great things but was disappointed. Fish was OK but not the freshest, coming from a fishing port, its something of a matter of importance for me. Non brewed condiment instead of malt vinegar and sachet sauces cheapen the experience. Decor was tired, service was hit and miss, prices on the high side for whats on offer. Could be a great place with a bit more attention to detail.

Went for a meal and came here based on recommendations, it didn’t disappoint. The food was amazing, all the staff were extremely friendly including the Billy and the barman Chris. I will definitely be back here again if in Brighton, I recommend this place strongly.

Terrible place Sat inside because of the seagulls. Inside is runtdown. Service is terrible. Cod is fresh, chips is soft. Green pea stewing is tasting like bad water. Tartar sauce is Heinz. We paid a fortune for a fishy meal.

Leider war die Empfehlung keine gute. Fish&Chips waren extrem fettig. Auf dem Nachbartisch saßen 8 Tauben, welche den Rest der Gäste aßen. Appetitlich ist anders. Der Fish war so fettig, daß man die Panade abmachen mußte. Meiner Meinung nach absolut nicht zu empfehlen!

We got a warm welcome on a wet bank holiday evening - and good value food too. Tasty fish and chips (with refills of the chips) and a good range of reasonably priced drinks. This is a convenient spot, right by the pier and I would expect it will be busier in warmer summer weather.

Gone out for a stroll with the wife along the prom, fancied some chips and a cold drink. We tried somewhere else 1st but we're told needed qr code no service at till, we'll my camera doesn't work. Walked a little further to captains, the customer service was totally different, felt wanted and welcomed..and the food was cheaper and really yummy Thank you

Reviews lived up to expectations and had a lovely meal here on Saturday 27th April. Service from all the staff was excellent but I would like to highlight Pam who was very nice and welcoming from the moment we walked in. Would highly recommend.

Was there with a group of 43 kids aged 13/14 . The staff were fabulous! Super well organized and very friendly. They really gave us teachers a welcome break 😁 the food was delicious and they were very accommodating for special requests.

We come to the coast for a birthday trip, so after looking at many fish and chip restaurants we decided to give Captains a go after reading all the good reviews. We definitely weren’t disappointed, the best fish and chips by far, highly recommend. We’ll be back!

We had such a great experience at Captains on a chilly February evening. Staff were friendly and attentive and the fish and chips were both delicious!

Fab visit this evening, really tasty cod and chips, nice light crispy batter, big flakes of perfectly cooked fish. Chips were nice and we were offered more during the meal. Curry sauce was delicious. The service was excellent, friendly staff who were chatty with us adults and the children too. They couldn’t do enough to make sure you were happy and well fed. Would definitely return. Thank you.

Chips were an 8/10 however the ‘Large fish’ was rather on the small side. Lots of batter but not much fish. The batter soggy too. For one of the more expensive fish and chip shops on the promenade, I don’t quite belive our experience lived up to the reviews here on trip advisor.

We visited at 16:00, staff met us at the door and welcomed us in. Staff were very attentive throughout and fish and chips came relatively quickly. On the menu they say that they pride themselves in their triple filtered oil, it clearly makes a difference the chips were brilliant and not greasy at all. To top things off, the chips came with free refills!

CLOSED! Got a booking confirmation but arrived and it was all shuttered down and closed! No warning given…very weird and disappointing!

We visited with our 21month old son today and we were very impressed! The food was beautiful and by far the best fish and chips in brighton!! The owner was such a lovely woman and she makes sure everyone in there is looked after which is lovely! She saw I was sharing my food with my son and came over with extra chips for us so I could eat properly too! 100% will come back again when we are in Brighton! Also they make a banging long island iced tea ❤️
