Popped in for the first time since the New Owners have taken over for a spot of lunch and being in the City good advantage if we fancy taking the bus instead of the car and then we might be able to try one of their cocktails! Not to over done with the decor and a lovely cosy atmosphere. The menu might be small, as mentioned in other posts but for me this was ideal as with other American diners I have often sent the server off so I can study the menu for longer but the choice is still good and my server did say they would try and accommodate a change if possible. Food is mostly locally sourced and fresh so don't expect frozen cooked curly things. Nice to see that the plate was not overloaded which I find quite off putting has it puts me off my meal and i don't like waste but I do like value for money. I left full and slightly sad that I had not room for Dessert. Will definitely go again! Most interesting to see the original menus on display!

Been coming here for years but sadly on this occasion for me it was disappointing. Service excellent but made you feel rushed. The booths have been removed which has lost its vibe somewhat of an American diner. No other customers, floor underneath our table had squashed food remains. Staff sitting at the bar. Maccy cheese was dry with no sauce, milkshakes great, very small portions. Definitely a noticeable change which is such a shame. I will be giving them another go as the rest of my party enjoyed their burgers as it may have been the time of day. Just ok for me on this occasion 😊

Six adults, one child (9 years old) and one toddler visited for dinner. We each had a burger and fries, a drink, shared some sides, and a dessert. The food was tasty, warm and filling. One member didn't like the beer, this was replaced. The staff were friendly and attentive. Would recommend. Only giving four stars instead of five because the £8 children's mac 'n' cheese was the same size as the £4 side mac 'n' cheese, except it came with a very small piece of garlic bread, a larger portion would have been appreciated.

While the menu is the same the new owner has improved the quality 100%. The majority of food is now prepared and cooked fresh using locally sourced ingredients, and you can really taste and see the difference! Captain America's had been a firm favourite of ours for over eight years, but after a few meals of cheap frozen food we were put off for quite sometime. I'm really pleased my son talked me into going back, we were not disappointed and can't wait to return!

To be honest, it's supposed to be a burger place and we didn't have burgers. Their beef hotdog is fairly decent, but their chicken platter was really sad. 3 dry wings, onions wings with no onion taste, a sad flat chicken breast smirred in mediocre sauce. On the plus side, Their Mac and cheese was good.

Having been going to Captain Americas for the last 50 years I went there yesterday for lunch. On entering the building I immediately noticed the lack of old seating, gone and new stand alone tables in their place! As for the menu, it seems to have shrunk since I was last in there!!! The chips looked and tasted different also the condiments were gone! There was no queues to get in…. Just a sad experience. The staff were lovely though.

Norwich….where are yooooouuuuu???!! Tonight was our second visit in a short space of time, after a long, long time since eating here. New management has brought this institution back to its former glory. The burgers are fantastic. Good, honest burgers - not hipster, messy burgers - but something that has a feel of how things used to be…..not messed about with but super tasty. Onions rings are great, homemade (not frozen muck) the same with the great homemade coleslaw. I have seen some moans about the portions being small - they are perfectly adequate for burger and chips - I fear we’re all becoming greedy guts’ with ridiculous expectations of the amount of food served. Who needs a gigantic mountain of fries?! The service was equally great - friendly, efficient, all you could ask for. Also, they serve Brooklyn lager on tap - I’m not sure where else in Norwich you get that nowadays but it’s worth the visit alone in my book. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s a great (reasonably priced) cocktail list!. I just don’t get why more people aren’t visiting. Get your bum down there.

Great place to eat. Really good food and if you are in the window, a nice people watching place to watch the world go by. Be aware of the steps to get up to the restaurant, its an old building with quite steep steps, I just took my time with them! My club sandwich was delicious and my husband enjoyed his burger. Very reasonably priced for today's current market, so worth a visit without breaking the bank, even with an alcoholic drink each. Just one star knocked off as the tables were super sticky, I think it's where the varnish gets tacky after cleaning. Otherwise it was a nice experience and I would visit again.

Came back here for a 30th birthday treat for my son. Not been since pre covid and wanted to give him the true American diner experiences. Was disappointed to see the decor had changed, menu choice seemed smaller, kids baby shark only came with 1 fish finger which was disappointing for the senior person with us, and the Frank furter was extremely salty. Having said that the place was clean, service was OK and food was hot. Just disappointing overall, as this was always our go to place when in Norwich

Came in for a meal by myself whilst killing some time, had walked past many many times, but had never been in before. Staff were welcoming and friendly and it was clearly a small business because of the intimate layout. Food was hot, well priced, and the Thor burger I ordered tasty and didn't fall apart in my hands. It was also a proper burger unlike Zak's that gets served open with the bottom bun soaked in sauce. All in all a nice meal, and will when the next opportunity arises go back to try the other items on the menu.

Both tasty! I had a strawberry shake which was amazing, so much that I ordered another almost straight away. Improvements? (Easy wins in my mind) Chips - were floppy, didn’t feel like they were cooked long.. certainly not “fries” Music - modern rap didn’t fit well with the 1950’s theme and wasn’t very family welcoming.. suggest revisiting the playlist Drinks menu! Add those famous shakes to a Menu somewhere.. I didn’t spot the drinks menu and was only presented with coke/sprite etc as options until I asked about shakes! Not what it was a decade ago, and a disappointing experience. It took 45 minutes for 5 burgers to come out, all with soggy, luke warm fries. I ordered the Caesar salad, which was £10 plus £3 for chicken. What came out was lettuce (amounting to the size of a side salad), about 60g of chicken, and 8 stale croutons. Obviously you should never order a salad here, but still...it was shocking. Sadly, I'll never go back.

Haven't been here for years. Was in the area, and saw that it was open, as I thought that it had ceased trading. Climbed the familiar helical staircase and entered the premises. There is now a bar area, which there never used to be, but the dining area seemed quite small. Not much of a wait to bring menus, and ordered food and drinks from friendly, chatty staff. Food arrived without too much of a wait. They used to have decent sized portions. Unfortunately the sign which read come in hungry go away happy, failed to fulfill its promise despite ordering extra onion rings and coleslaw. The burger although nice was not particularly hot either. Would have liked to have given a better review for old times sake, but was sadly a bit disappointed.

Food was decent but honestly the worst dining experience I’ve had. We were ignored by the waiting staff for 30 mins only for them to forget our order after 2 hours with an excuse that the till wasn’t working. Absolute lie (we used the till when paying). Other tables had to go up and ask to be served whilst staff sat on snapchat sending voice notes! No apology from the staff before complaining at the end. Got one free drink for our table of 4 as a result…we arrived at 6 and left at 8 just for a burger. AWFUL!

Came here for dinner with my partner and it was exactly what we needed after a long day of shopping and site seeing. Our server Sophia was lovely and couldn't ask for a better host. Super friendly and knew the menu inside and out when I had questions. For starters I had the BBQ wings and my partner had the blooming onion, both were done perfectly. For mains I had the Captain America cheeseburger and my partner had the dirty rooster chicken burger with cheese. Both were amazing and really put you in a good place, full but not bloated. The quality was excellent and you could tell that everything was made fresh - the fries were especially good in my opinion. All of this was reasonably priced considering we had the above and two drinks each and a side as well. Would highly recommend visiting and whilst a lot of other reviews on here complain about it "not being what it used to be" etc. I think with a few more memorabilia items on the walls and the music a little louder it's a great place to spend the evening. We will definitely be coming back to visit in the future.

Sorry Brits, but you are being ripped off at this place. Visited September 7th @ 4:00PM. Table of seven and we were the only table, so service was great! Food was not good. Monkey Fingers "chicken strips" were over cooked. Cesar salad wasn't even worth £1 made only with the Ice burg white core lettuce, and the hamburger patties are cooked from frozen, not fresh. Place should be hip but comes across more as a dive. Came here on a local recommendation and decided to see what they thought was soooo great. This place misses the mark.

The service was really great, very helpful and attentive. However, the food was low quality and I don't necessarily think down to the ingredients. I think the quality of the preparation and the cooking was the issue. The meat based burgers were really greasy, it was dripping into a pool on the basket they were served in. The chips were somehow soft and greasy from the oil they were cooked in, I suspect due to the oil being on too low a temperature. I also think maybe the same issue with my son's chicken burger, he struggled to eat it. It was too dry and the coating was falling off. Again, possibly due to the wrong oil temperature. Lastly, the table we sat at was sticky and needed cleaning down. If it was half the cost, I think it would still be a little too much but at least I wouldn't have felt as strongly as I do, but for that price, I can't not comment on it. I really wanted to enjoy this, I thought it had improved after falling short for so many years and now changing hands, but sadly no. I think if improvements aren't made, business will drop, and that's a shame.

A fond favourite of mine for many years...but sadly this was my last visit to Captain A's. Half the delight of eating here was the Americana - number plates on the walls and the fantastic booth seating has all been removed to make it look just like any other industrial restaurant. The play on Captain America has slipped into the menu, with most items now based on Marvel characters, leaving the American aspect behind. My Thor burger was tasty and the fries were piled high, but my partners enemic hotdog was rather lack-lustre. Sadly the thick shakes were dissapointing too and gone within a few sucks of the straw, rather than the challenge of getting it through your straw of old. Whilst the staff were friendly and accommodating, this long held favourite eatery has lost its warmth, chararacter and charm. Good bye old friend

We took the kids here for lunch and had a nice time. The food was good in the main, however there were a few faults. My partner's diet coke tasted odd, when we looked at the bottle it expired in 2020! This was promptly replaced and many apologies offered. The buns on all the burgers were a little dense from being stale, one was so bad it had to go back, but again this was swiftly replaced and wasn't charged for. The only other issue was that the chips were a bit too salty, albeit we ate them! We very much wanted to love this place, it had clearly been recently redecorated and looked sharp. The service was very friendly and faultless (they also offered a 10% discount for a subsequent visit). I think any one or two of these faults could be forgiven, but it is hard to do so for all of them. I wouldn't not go back, however the competition is stiff and there are many other places worth a try.

Staff were friendly and the place was clean but there was very little space to move once sat down as tables are very close together. The food was passable but sadly nothing to write home about. Captain America's was OK but I will not be visiting again especially with so many restaurants offering the same fare in norwich.

I want to say so many good things, but it's evident that a new team who are clearly learning as they go along have a long way to go. Staff like Livvie are a breath of fresh air and incredibly attentive. Keep doing what you do! Dealing with big parties is a skill this team have yet to master. I can accept failure, however I can't accept not trying. Food was good, despite an absolute farce when trying to pay the bill.

Have been going here since the 70s. It has changed hands a couple of times and has recently had a refurb but still great burgers and cocktails

First time visiting this restaurant. Entrance opposite Jarrolds. Steep stairs only to the first floor. Could be problematic for people less abled. Cosy setting. We had reserved a table which is probably recommended. The choice of starters is limited to three dishes. The main menu had a variety of dishes mainly named after comic book characters so I had a rack of ribs!! The food was plentiful and cooked perfectly. The staff were friendly and attentive. So much so that, as we were wearing Norwich City FC clothing, were asked whether we were season ticket holders. We were and were told we were entitled to 10% off our bill. Result!! I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys an American menu!!

Five of us dined, five of us have diarrhea and sickness, it has been reported to the food standards agency, i'd written most of the review before the symptoms showed up.I've been to Captain America's about a dozen times over a 40 year period, it has been somewhere i went as a teen, young adult and a dad, however, it's going to be dropped off the list.I don't want to sound repetitive, but, it's another restaurant trading off a former reputation. We had the "Dare Devil", a chicken and ribs combo with fries and coleslaw and ate it all. The ribs were very similar to those you buy vac packed at any supermarket, the chicken wings were exactly like supermarket breaded wings, even down to that funny taste all mass processed breaded chicken has and the chicken steak/breast was very small and underwhelming.I'd equate the food to that of an industrial estate cafe i visit. The ribs, chicken wings and chicken steak are available on different days, but, the quality and flavor is the same as Cap Ams. i like the estate cafe and will give it a good review when i have time, but, i'm not paying Captain America's prices! The service at CA was good and the food was very well presented, but, at over £20 a head for one course and a coke i expected something better than you could shake and bake at home or get at a good greasy spoon.I'm disappointed that another of my old favorites has slashed it's quality while maintaining or increasing prices, especially as it also made us ill!!The reply i received from CA"dear customer ,we feel very concerned that you put a post on trip advisor after vising us and the rude remarks you made about our manageress and then ringing her for your money back, as for our food we now make everything on the premises and cook fresh and all our meat comes from a good quality butcher not a supermarket and on your visit to us all other customers said how much the food had improved and what good value it was .if anybody has a problem when in our diner we would rather you approach us for it to be corrected but after your comments you made about my staff member I'm not surprised."My response.1.Please read the review, the only comment i made about any staff is that the service was good! I even left a small tip as i felt the food quality was not the waitress fault. 2.I did not phone for a refund, i don't ask for food refunds, i just don't use them any more. If a refund is what i wanted i wouldn't have completed the review prior to contacting CA's. The reason i phoned was to warn CA's that they could kill someone. All of us that ate were fit and healthy, however, we were all really ill, some of us still 4 days later, anyone with underlying health issues might not be so lucky. The waitress was extremely apologetic on the phone and offered a refund, i certainly didn't ask for one! She also said she would have the owner/boss call me, which they didn't. Why would she offer a refund, apologize and offer to ring me straight back if i'd been so rude? 3.All poorly run business's immediately blame the complainant instead of looking at their own procedures. Attempting to discredit reviews instead of responding to the actual issue. A well run establishment would be horrified that we might have become ill on their food and even if their was only a small chance of it being them would attempt to reassure customers that they have checked their due diligence and reinforced food safety protocols in response.4.Only people with real complaints put this much effort into a review and i'm sure you'll find that all your response has done is to strengthen the conviction of those reading it that CA's is currently a bad place to dine.

Deliciously juicy burger. I opted for a cheese and bacon as toppings. It was lush! The burgers are made in-house with locally sourced meat. Friendly service. Nice atmosphere. Tasty desserts. Would highly recommend to others and will return again!

Popped in for a quick drink & sit down. Proper old locals pub, friendly staff. Just what we needed. Not much choice of casks ales but bottle of speckled hen did the job.

It was okay. I think it suited our needs whilst being out in town shopping and needing some lunch. Wasn't too keen on the blue cheese coleslaw or onion rings. My friend liked his double cheeseburger, but it only had one slice of cheese in it, I had a chicken burger, and it was okay.

Used my vouchers for two 6” meals for £6.99 and a 6” sub for £2.49 on a visit with my 5 year old twins. It was their first subway visit and it was a success for them. My daughter had the meat one with all the meat balls, and hams etc, my son had cheese and ham. I wasn’t as pleased as I got sweet corn which I’d been clear was the only salad item I didn’t want. The whole place needed a good clean and tidy and staff could be smilier.
