Had fish and chips here while on day trip to exmouth. Was lovely. All freshly cooked and chips were awesome. Batter on fish was light and not greasy. Very polite guys behind counter and place was clean. Well done great food and value for money.

We had cod & chips here on Sunday, and they really were delicious. Unfortunately, due to the staff not being friendly or welcoming, I have only given this fish & chip shop 3 stars. We ate our cod & chips in the cafe, but we felt quite uncomfortable due to the staff. However, like I've previously said, our cod & chips were delicious. Would we return? Possibly not.

Plaice chips and mushy peas. Plenty of it and good quality. Service was quick and efficient. Restaurant was very clean.

Ordered 2 large portions of cod and chips as a takeaway last night. Excellent chips, batter was not greasy and light. Hot and tasty. Have to say better than other well known local fish and chip shops . Definitely recommend.

This restaurant used to be very good. My late mother actually knew Vi Capel a previous owner many years ago, and I have always used Capels whenever I have visited Exmouth but sadly not again. I ordered medium Fish and Chips and a mug of tea to eat in, at a total cost of £13.80. Well although the fish was edible ( I have tasted far better from there in past visits), the chips definitely were not. These seemed to me to be warmed up left overs from lunch. They were hard and tasteless with a lot of very small bits and some of the larger ones were so hard as to be uneatable without damaging your teeth. It is such a shame as Capels was always a good place to eat in the past. I don't know whether there are new owners who have inherited capels name but the standards have really declined since I last ate there and I shan't be eating there the next time I visit Exmouth.

Nice fish and chips. Better than expected! We sat in. Generous portion size. Nice light batter on the fish. Lady serving could have been a little more friendly.

We ordered on line then picked up our order which was almost ready when we arrived. The staff were pleasant and friendly. We had cod, chips and mushy peas and an oap portion of the same. The food was delicious and the portions were extremely generous. A friend recommended Capels and we were definitely not disappointed. This is a must do when in Exmouth!

The woman who works in here is quite simply one of the rudest people I have ever met. She has absolutely no customer service at all and makes every customer seem like an inconvenience to her life. Lessons need to be learnt. The food is average here and that combined with the rudeness I would recommend going elsewhere. There are plenty of other options locally.

Fantastic, eat in, early evening meal, after watching the Exmouth Town FC football match. The two ladies, working ‘front of house’ were delightfully friendly and fastidious. Very pleasant and affable. Scampi and large chips were lovely !!!!

I ordered & paid for 2 x haddock, chips and peas, 1 tea + 1 coffee, 1 bread roll @ £28.85 - ouch. Haddock was good but had skin on it - ugh, chips were good & plentiful. Peas? we had pea soup? no evidence of peas. We got 2 teas? No coffee was received, though paid for! No bread roll either, also paid for @ £1.00. I have no intention of ever returning to this establishment. It's a pity, since this was a favourite of ours previously, never again though!

We bought a takeaway of cod, chips and mushy peas along with cheese and onion fryits as a snack for me before running the Exmouth 5 mile race. Both of us really enjoyed our food and I thought the cheese and onion was very tasty and a generous size. Fuelled me well for the run. Served quickly and very happy. Sadly a long way from home living in Merseyside so unlikely to be a repeat visit. Never say never though 🙂

Me and boyfriend popped in recently for cod & chips - it was bloody lovely! i’m not a big fan of fish and normally opt for a sausage (oi oi) but i pinched half of my boyfriends and though it was amazing!!! would definitely reccomend

I pop to Exmouth on my bike from Exeter to earn my bag of chips from Capels. The chippies have that traditional flavour , good texture and alway hot . The fish is always very good too. There's another chippy further up the estuary nearer Exeter that I think doesn't capture the traditional fish and chip 'thing' and is considerably more expensive...a lot more. So I'm peddling the extra 7 miles from now on . We'll worth it .

Absolutely divine batter on extremely fresh fish. It was light, nongreasy and beat many top-class restaurants where I have had fish & chips. The chips were also excellent and much too plentiful for me, but I took what was left and did them up next day in the air fryer! I shall definitely be going back.

Great for a well priced, no fuss fish and chips. The food was lovely, basic eat in area but clean and tidy. Suitable for an early, quick bite to eat. Second time we have been.

Not been here on holiday for many years, but the food is still fantastic. Decent portion, lovely quality fish and so fresh and clean oil. The man serving the food is absolutely fantastic though - what a credit! An old lady came in with a cough, offered to buy her a cup of tea, and shut one of the doors. Two little kids came in with their parents and he gave them a drink to go with their meals, the boys didn't like it, so he played and joked with them until he could give them what they wanted. Every customer was greeted cheerily and the team worked hard, together and quickly. We passed a few times over next few days and could see the same service being delivered.

Fabulous food We had half a chicken and chips, large haddock and chips, mushy peas and gravy. Everything cooked while you wait and cooked to perfection. Could stand my chips up in the gravy - perfect Would totally recommend the food here

We popped in here for lunch with our 5 year old and 5 month old. Although the restaurant area only seated a few there was space for the pushchair, and it was very welcoming. We all had fish and chips, our daughter having a kids meal, which included a drink. The fish was really first class, well cooked and tasted excellent. We also enjoyed lovely chips and mushy peas. The service was excellent and it had a lovely atmosphere. Breastfeeding was welcome and I felt completely comfortable, which I add because I know other places where I've not been so welcomed. We all enjoyed our lunch, it was good value for money. Would love to see the restaurant expand to accommodate more people but that isn't by any means a criticism, more a wish for the future. We Will most definitely visit again.

We used Deliveroo to order a meal of fish, chips and mushy peas. The food arrived 15 mins ahead of their anticipated time and it was absolutely faultless. So tasty.

So pleased that we chose to eat in Capels this evening.Very clean,bright Covid safe premises with 5 tables spaced apart.The haddock was so white and fresh tasting in a light and flaky golden batter.Large plate of hot,chunky chips not oily but still crisp outside soft inside.Best we've had for years.Nice side portion of mushy peas with Heinz tomato sauce and vinegar .Nice bunch of staff too.If I lived here I would be a regular customer.Still I could see by the number of people queuing during our visit it's already got a great reputation.

We walked from Topsham and needed sustenance. We saw a queue outside Capels and decided to wait in line. After five minutes we were able to make our orders. The shop is very clean and bright and covid safe. We all agreed after eating our lunch that Capels was a place we would unhesitatingly visit when next in Exmouth. You will need a good appetite as the portions are certainly generous.

Had a really good meal again. Large haddock and chips really is a winner. Very disappointed for Capels to see poor previous reviews, not in our experience.

Absolutely disgusting. Not a single part of this meal was anything better than terrible.Everything was tasteless. The fish was slimy and greasy with thick, undercooked batter. All I can taste now 5 minutes later is oil. Chips were undercooked and tasted of nothing. How can they be this bad? Have you never tasted them before? Disgusting. Terrible.The mushy peas were absolutely revolting. Baby food would be nicer. The curry sauce defied physics when turning the pot upside down. Awful, awful awful.Look at the photo. We paid £4 for a "large chip butty". That's some undercooked chips in a seeded burger bun. Absolute piss take. Easily the worst fish and chips I've ever tasted and I think the worst meal I've ever eaten in my life. I wouldn't give this food to my worst enemy. Comically bad.

Sad to say the fish and chips we had from this outlet were the worst we have had in a very long time. Dripping in grease I couldn’t eat the batter or the chips that were swimming in it. The cardboard box they came in was so soaked in grease from the food so unable to eat on our laps overlooking the sea as intended. The fish had bones and the total family bill was very expensive.

I cannot believe that Capels used to be considered the best fish and chips in Exmouth...this is most definitely not the case any longer. I can honestly say that tonight I have just had the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten. The fish was far from fresh and the chips were freezing cold and overdone. The service was atrocious despite us being the only people in the shop at the time and the ‘paid for condiments’ were the cheapest/nastiest brand I have ever encountered. Do yourself a favour and go to Crispies, I would most certainly not recommend Capels!

Have just had the worst experience ever at a fish and chip shop. We used to think Capels was the best fish and chips in town by a mile but not now. Tonight was horrendous. I queued for my order and in front a lady was being served. She obviously knew the restaurant staff well and, strangely, when a piece of fish was handed across from the kitchen the server rejected it and said no I need another piece. They chatted on and she was gone. I then waited for the rest of my order and was served but I was a bit suspicious I had been served the rejected fish. Stupidly I should have confronted the server there and then. We went to eat the fish and chips but the fish was unsurprisingly disgusting - I actually had to spit it out. Now a piece of fish can be dodgy very occasionally. Most good restaurants check and never serve it. But here she did know and still served it. It had been rejected for her friend and then served to me. I will never go back to Capels. Terrible, terrible customer service.

Used to come here often but has gone down hill, awful overcooked fish dripping in fat & undercooked very fat chips ! Unsure if it’s had a change of ownership or not but I was shocked at how bad the food was as it used to be a lovely traditional fish & chip shop. On the plus side The staff were lovely & service was good despite the big queues due to covid but sadly the awful food will not be enticing me back.

Gave this place a second chance as our first visit was poor. Shouldn’t have bothered. There’s a sign in the window saying they do gluten free chips. Good start. We rang to try and pre-order but were told due to social distancing we had to just turn up. That was strange! I did turn up and queued for 10 minutes. I ordered gluten free chips. The sever turned behind him and said to the fryer “all the chips are gluten free aren’t they?” The reply was that it was a one-off and they couldn’t just separate the chips!! What was the point of it all?? We won’t be giving them a third chance.

Chips were undercooked (white,transparent.) The burger was fine and the jumbo saus was gross. The dark hair waitress was rude, wouldn't hurt to learn some manners and customer skills.

Considering that Exmouth has a fishing fleet I could not believe the poor quality of this fish and chips. The batter was dripping grease and the fish was overcooked to the extent that it was inedible.The chips were stuck together in a greasy pile, the only thing at all appetising were the free mushy peas.If you have any functioning taste buds I would suggest that you avoid this place altogether.

Popped in here the other day for a quick bite to eat after getting off the train. Ordered the double sausage & chips with a soft drink for about £7. Staff were friendly enough but food was very average based on my experience.I do quite a lot of travelling and like checking out local chippies to see how they all compare and this place was definitely not up to scratch compared to a lot of other chip shops I'm afraid.When next in area I'd definitely go elsewhere.

Paid a visit here as the queue at Krispies was nightmarishly long. Should have just waited in the queue.The chips were just horrible and we threw most of them away. They were undercooked, limp and greasy and lacked any colour. Having now read other reviews it seems this is a regular issue. Capels has gone right down hill. My wife and I just popped in for a bag of chips each. All the surfaces were sticky and the place just felt unclean. We took our chips down to the duck pond to eat them, but couldn’t. They were under cooked soggy and greasy. We threw them in the bin by the rugby club. We will not be going back to Capels ever again. If we had known it was going to be so bad, we would have walked around the corner to “The Proper Chip shop” or “Krispies”. After eating a small amount of the chips, I felt sick. The staff are miserable, maybe they get free dinner there. That would make me miserable too.

Picked Capels for lunch. Only good thing was the senior's price and the tea/coffee. The fish and chips were horrid and greasy and the bread butter not too good either. Won't be going back there.

I never write bad reviews but this time I had to absolutely vile is all I can say soggy uncooked chips that I just threw away as they where inedible thin piece of Cod which hadn't been filleted properly also to top it off they didn't even put it in our order we had to go back to be told to check my receipt ermmmm check your orders before you send them out... Please people save yourselfs and save your money just don't bother

Visited Capels today expecting the usual high standads but were left feeling very disappointed. The large cod we ordered resembled a childs portion, the chips were bottom of the bag scrag ends a d it was all greasy and not enjoyable at all. We have used Capels a lot over the past twenty years but shall never go there again, ever.

I have not been to Capels for a while and now I remember why, having made the mistake of visiting there this evening. The cod was wet and greasy, the batter was stuck to the paper when it was removed, the mushy peas were a strange colour and even stranger taste, the chips, if you could call then that, were flat and tasteless and greasy, absolutely disgusting. How could a fish and chip shop get fish and chips SO wrong? Don't waste your money, there are others nearby who are far better and especially know how to do chips.

Greasy flat cod greasy flat chips. Take away from capels and make sure you have enough room in your waste food bin. You are going to need it. Cheap rubbish. I should have gone to krispies or anywhere else. This place is best avoided

Popped in here whilst visiting Exmouth. We thought our local fish and chip shop in Derbyshire was good but these surpassed ours. Although the restaurant was quite small and the chairs were not that comfortable it was well worth the visit. The two young ladies who were serving were very pleasant and helpful. We had the seafood platter whilst the rest of the family had traditional fish and chips. All were made to order with sustainable caught fish and local produce. The quality of the food was superb. Would definitely go back if in the area.

After reading the poor reviews, was a bit wary of going here.In Exmouth on holiday, going back to camp site from pub and we decided we fancied some chips. The best tasting chips I've had in a long time! So good we went and had fish & chips. Had the senior meal which was cod & chips, bread & butter and a cup of tea. Cost was £12.20 fot the two of us. I don't know how they make the batter, bit it was definitely the best I've ever had. The two girls lovely and friendly.

A revisit to Capel’s fish restaurant in Exmouth was most disappointing. Apparently friendly service, but according to the menu not a lot is locally caught, no lemon for the fish and when requested, access to the toilet was refused. You won’t be seeing me again.

We were running late on a Friday night so thought we would pick up fish and chips to take home, there was a parking space right outside so stopped here.

Slow service, miserable staff and soggy fish and chips with no flavour. Chips had hard lumps in . Plenty of good chip shops in exmouth - don’t bother with this one - expensive too .

There was more grease and fat than fish on the plate. I think the waitress was aware of how poor the food was by the fat there was no "was everything ok with your meal?".

Popped in on way home at around 8pm. Ordered couple of fish and chips and sausage and chips. Told we would have to wait for it to be cooked. Got them home which is only couple of minutes away and only the fish was hot. The chips were almost cold and soggy and the sausage looked and tasted like it had been cooked a long time ago. nothing like this place was a few years ago. It really has gone downhill. Girl serving was friendly and pleasant but will not bother going back again.

This used to be an excellent restaurant. The other day, as our fav was closed we bought cod & chips for 2 from here, (takeaway). The fish tasted too fishy to be fresh, The oily batter slid off & the small chips ( normally we get small chips as that is a large enough portion) were miniscule. Sadly disappointed. I will try them again next year & hopefully leave a positve review then. For now they need to regroup & get their act back together.

Spent the best part of £50 on fish and chips, can't fault the fish, everyone (9 people) enjoyed the fish, the chips though were a different story. No one enjoyed the chips, they appeared to be a bit old and everyone had to pick around to find edible ones. Very disappointed, and very unlikely to return.

Large chips purchased Saturday afternoon, these were chips that had been fried a long time ago, they should have been thrown out, very dry, I will not return.

Been here previously and all was well. This time however, the pies which are stated as ‘Pukka Pies’ on the menu are definitely not that brand. They weren’t very tasty and because of this I’ll try a different chip shop next time.

We had medium sized fish. Lord knows how much bigger the large portion would have been!!!! Extremely tasty ,oh and of corse the chips portion was big and of the best I have ever tasted!

Ordered our meal which included tea and bread and butter in the price, the meal arrived with the tea and we assumed the bread and butter would follow, we had almost eaten our meal and still no bread and butter so I went to the counter and asked them for it but the ignorant staff member just chuckled and said we can have it to take away if we wanted! I asked for a reduction in the price but he said "no chance" . I paid the bill and left, never will we eat there again,

Decided to have chips for lunch, saw this place and as you can sit in, decided we would sit in. I ordered scampi and chips my husband ordered the pasty and chips. My scampi was nice but I didn't particularly enjoy the chips. My husband pasty looked like it had been hanging around a bit and was looking over done. The service was pleasant enough but I don't think I would eat here again unless I just want scampi.p

I was not impressed at all sat in the restaurant. There was a lady who was over the top annoying staff and customer with her attitude. The fish and chips arrived and were running in fat. Tip the plate and it made a pool of oil. It made us feel physically ill. It’s put us off eating fish and chips and visiting this place. We were told it was the best in town but obviously standards have slipped.

Went to this café thinking that we'd get good fish and chips as it's relatively near the sea front. The food was very poor...we should have been suspicious when we got in there and were the only customers on a warm evening. The service was slow and the food was vile, the chips were cold and stuck together...there was a lot of oil and the fish was virtually welded onto the batter and was very poor quality. I had a vegetable burger which tasted as if it was made out of slugs. The meal came to over £15.00 and spoiled our holiday, stay away from this place.

been here 5 times in the past 2 months and Every time it's been terrible service. One girl and a young boy don't know what service is! chewing gum behind the counter and wearing jewellery when preparing food. Attitude from the girl from Essex was disgusting and she had no ability to handle an unhappy customer in fact she came from the behind the bar and feontedbupnto myy girlfriend which was quite intimidating . they couldn't tell me what was in the boxes and tbh the large fish looked the same as the children's portions plus they bagged it all up without offering salt and vinegar and then huffed when I asked for it!. £34 for 5 fish and chips isn't cheap so they need to make it feel like better value with much better service. we will not be buying from there again even if the food is actually quite nice......sort it quick owners cos your staff are destroying the reputation of this once very good fish and chip shop.

we called in for a take away to take to the Exmouth Festival. We were 2 couples. My mates order was wrong and he had to get a partial refund as he had been overcharged. When we came to eat the meal my battered sausage looked like it had been dipped in water as the batter was so wet, the chips were very bland and I could not detect any of the salt and vinegar that had been offered. My mates wife’s battered cod was also dripping wet and soggy. Overall, very disappointing and I wilnn not return.

Ordered the Senior Citizens Special at £5.90, Cod, Haddock and Hake were the choices, we opted for Haddock. When it arrived the batter on the fish was superb and the size of the fish was impressive probably the best fish and chips we've had since living in Devon. It was accompanied by chips, bread and butter and the choice of tea or coffee. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Nice friendly atmosphere, will certainly visit here again when next we come to Exmouth.

Tea was ok. Curry sauce was a bit gloupy. Service was v polite and efficient. The star of the show was a wonderful large piece of cod in a crispy batter. If i was going to be really fussy then ever so slightly too oily.

Probably visited Caples 7 or 8 times over the last couple of years. When we first went it was brilliant I would even say faultless!
