We stopped here in a cycle ride. The young man at the bar was welcoming but was obviously trying to juggle a lot on his own. Most of us had ciabatta's which were quite honestly under filled. Such a shame as the pub is in a really good spot

Popped in here today for a quick drink before cycling along the canal to Bath. A warm & friendly greeting from the young lady and was kind enough to let me use a socket to charge up my battery whilst having a drink & packet of crisps. Unfortunately there was no food being served but she was very helpful by telling others of options nearby. Would definitely return here if in the area

Good beer selection, but nightmarish service: almost an hour for a simple ciabatta. They said food preparation would take 45 minutes: it was only a ciabatta sandwich!!! I could have made at least 20 of them in 45 minutes !!!!

Reviews must be out of date as four of us went in for a pint on Friday 22nd March. Guess what ? NO DRAFT BEER !! Noone about to serve at the bar, all six pump clips turn inwards. Had a go searching for one reluctant, disinterested member of staff ‘on duty’. So why is the pub open ? Presumably it’s on its last legs … RIP .

Disappointing visit to the Canal Tavern, used to eat there a lot but won’t be in a rush to go back. The two staff working front of house looked miserable, not a smile between them the whole time we were there. One didn’t know much about the drinks available and the other when we asked for a couple of kids menu just passed a wet / stained menu that was hardly legible and rather than apologising for its state or looking for another one, just said “that’s all we’ve got” before walking immediately away from the table. After ordering food they had to come back to the table to tell us some of what we ordered wasn’t available, this happened not just once, or twice but three times. Of our party of 8 only 2 people managed to have the meal they originally ordered. Having finished eating we were left for ages with plates on the table. Had to go and ask if the kids could have the ice creams that came as part of their meal, which then took well over 10mins to arrive, would have been fine if the pub was busy but by this point there were hardly any customers left. We were not offered a dessert menu and to be honest at this point I think we just wanted to leave anyway. On the way home my husband mentioned it was just as well he was driving as there was very little lager available. Seems incredible that a pub could be so low on food and drink, especially on what could be a very busy Saturday. Friendly staff wouldn’t go a miss, perhaps they were fed up of telling people things weren’t available.

Hi I’ve tried to post this to the email address online but both of which don’t work so am resorting to leaving a review on here! Having been to this pub before we were happy to go back and booked a table for 10 mid week. On arrival we were told there was very little food available and were given a list of our options. They then ran out of wine, and had very little lager available. The food wasn’t too bad and is what I’d expect from a local pub, however I found it very odd, how they had also run out of ketchup! Running out of ketchup and having very little alcohol is somewhat odd for a pub. The pub itself is in a great location and isn’t too badly decorated altho abit tired in places! Unfortunately the issues we found will mean we are unlikely to come as a group again and will instead book elsewhere. The bar staff tried their best, but I felt sorry for them having to tell us there was very little of anything available. Hopefully this improves moving forward as it has soo much potential

As a local to the area, I have been going to the Canal Tavern for years and I am sorry to say that just recently things have not been great. Very often we have gone in and they have been out of wine, beer and even orange juice the other day. They were out of any draft lager last Friday night - what kind of pub is out of lager on a Friday!

An ok visit let down by literally inedible cheesey chips! They arrived very quickly - much too quickly to be freshly cooked and we suspected they had been sprinkled with cheese and microwaved. It was like eating cardboard.

I was pleasantly surprised to have such a lovely meal after reading some of the reviews on here. After a soggy day on the canal we wanted a hot meal & a sit down. The canal tavern was the closet open pub serving food. The menu wasn’t huge but there was something on there for all of us & when the girl brought it over we were all pleased with our choices. It was freshly cooked & really tasty. Couldn’t fault it. The girl who was multitasking as a barmaid & waitress was run off her feet but did it all with a smile on face. She was a credit to the establishment. I was almost put off going by some of the previous reviews on here but am so glad we did.

Amzing spot bybthe canal ,I have been 3 or 4 times since it reopened ,each time its pretty much the same , uninterested staff if any staff at all, poor service ,average food . Watched 2 families leave and go to lock inn as we waited . Surely it can't be this hard to run a small pub. Must try harder guys ,it should be 1 star but I want them to get better.

This pub is in a great spot, but just seems to limp from one manager to the next. No wine list, so asked for large white wine assuming a house wine- 250ml 12.90?? So £38.70 a bottle Queried this with the man at the bar and yes it's correct and wasn't particularly nice. Apparently I should have been offered a choice when I asked for a wine list. We won't return. Sounds like the stags and hens love it though 😂 You might have the beautiful canal but Dick and Jane brought people to this area, you can't ride off them anymore because they're old place has been ruined too within 2 years

We had a lovely lunch here as a party of four. Despite also trying to juggle the demands of a hen party, staff were really attentive, friendly and quick. The barman (Isaac?) was really lovely when taking the food order for my friend, who for various health reasons can’t eat this or that. We felt well looked after and really enjoyed our lunch here. We would certainly come again.

Came here as part of a bank holiday pubcrawl with a group of mates. Was really busy with staff obviously rushed off their feet, but despite us having probably been a bit of a handful as a group (we‘d had a few by then!!), the guy who served us was really funny and never lost his sense of humour with us (even though a few of our lot didn’t know what they wanted, then changed their minds etc). We had a really good time here. More down to earth than some places in Bradford on Avon.

This place is fantastically placed adjacent the canal, it has so much opportunity to be fantastic. Unfortunately the staff are so disinterested that the setting is wasted. There was one barman who I believe was called Isaac, dear god that guy could not care less about customer service. His attitude was shocking, not just to me but the next 3 people in the queue. They stopped taking food orders at 1pm because the kitchen was overwhelmed. When the customer asked “can’t I just be given a waiting time?” Isaac responded “if you want to wait hours then yeah” with a stupid grin on his face. Another customer asked what Lager they had. Isaac said Amstel or Madri, when the customer asked what Madri is he responded “just a lager” Wow Thankfully when the food came out it was ok, not good, but ok. Perhaps our expectations were lowered so much that we were happy to at least get what we ordered. There is some serious customer service training required.

As regular patrons of the Canal Tavern in the past, until it shut suddenly last year, we were delighted to see that it was open again when we drove past it on our way into Bradford-on-Avon recently, so after finishing our business in town we went there for lunch. What a disappointment! The 'service' was so laid-back and lasse-faire as to be almost non-existent. The barman seemed to be in a permanent daze and incapable of any sort of interaction with his customers. The food was put on the table by someone who barely said a word and then walked away, leaving us to realise after a while that they were NOT coming back with any cutlery or condiments, so I had to go to the bar and w-a-i-t for the barman to serve me in order to get any. The food was OK-ish, but nothing to write home about. Then we discovered that they do NOT do any proper desserts - all that was on offer was a very unappetising looking cake. Seriously - is that the best the 'new management' can do? So we paid up, left unfulfilled, and walked along to The Barge Inn to finish our lunch there! It's going to have to improve a lot to tempt us back, but no wonder it seemed so quiet at what used to be a busy time.

This place is under new management so not a great start. We spent 15 minutes trying to get served while the barman had a ciggie in full view of the bar he then collected all the glasses outside. He actually avoided looking at the bar and assumed we had left when we swapped sides it is only when he turned collecting glasses he decided to do anything. Two other people came and left while we waited. I can see why there weren't many people in.

What a pleasant relief to find somewhere that serves 'proper food', as opposed to chips with everything! I had steak and ale pie, topped with mash and cheese, served with vegetables. The pie was filled with chunks of succulent steak and rich gravy. The vegetables were carrots, spring cabbage and broccoli, all cooked to perfection. If you like traditional 'pub grub', you will enjoy this, home cooked food, at its best. Well worth the short walk from the town centre, if you like traditional food.

Called in when on the way back to our short break accommodation after a short stroll, the very welcoming & inexpensive Barge Inn, because I fancied a pint of Wadworth's 6X (not one of the beers on tap at The Barge). Both me & my wife decided upon having the same, my wife just a half, and clutching a £10 I said to the barman "take on for yourself", expecting him to do what bar staff do around where we live & take just 20p to put in the tips jar behind the bar. I was more than somewhat surprised to find that the cost of a pint & a half of Wadworth's 6X plus tip came to 14p over £10. Avoid this place & find somewhere less expensive in Bradford on Avon.

Having been to the Tavern on a few occasions and enjoyed the food, I was very disappointed on my last visit, in fact it was nothing short of dreadful. Myself and my partner went in around 630pm for dinner there were one two other couples maximum and no one else eating. My partner ordered the Chicken Kiev and I had the home made curry. When both meals arrived my partner started to eat her chicken kiev after a few mouthfuls she said it didn't taste right. On cutting through the middle of it the chicken was completely Raw inside I asked the young man there to take a look, he took it away to the kitchen and we were asked to pick a different meal. I was expected to eat mine. So we both had dinner at separate times On paying the bill they discounted my partners meal. However a few drinks and eating at separate times the bill was over £40.00. We wrote an email of complaint to the management about the whole experience a week later we received a reply saying they were sorry we didn't enjoy our meal..... That was it. I'm no chef but to put out a nearly raw chicken and the hazards to health that brings up is nothing short of disgraceful.

We weren't particularly impressed with one of your male bartenders on Sunday. After travelling, we decided to stop off in Bradford upon Avon for Sunday lunch. The pub was busy but there were several tables free, and the male bartender said that we could come back in 30-45mins and a table would be ready. I asked him whether he needed to take our name, and he said no. Prior to being served, another couple had asked the same question and he asked for their name and wrote it down.We returned just before 45mins later and were told by the same bartender that were still no tables available and he had no idea when a table would be ready. He did a shrug and had a bit of attitude, and he wasn't apologetic either. We felt disappointed as there were tables free and saw the couple that had their name taken before us sitting at a table.Never mind though - the pub round the corner called The Barge Inn accommodated us and we had a wonderful meal with super-friendly staff, so we were glad that we didn't eat at the Canal Tavern after all.

Visited at lunch time on New Year's eve. Ordered steak and ale pie + steak and stilton pie. Taking the pastry lid off, both pies contained what looked to be a ladle of sloppy beef stew, comprising mainly gravy and carrot with very little steak, the only difference between the two being a small lump of stilton melted into the "steak and stilton" pie. The accompanying mash and peas were equally unappetizing.Very small meal, very high price, very low standard. Won't be going back.

I often visit this pub for a drink after dog walking along the canal or lunch/supper with family and friends. The outside garden space has a pretty covered area which is great in summer and winter. The food is exceptionally good for an unassuming local. The menu is traditional pub food but everything is cooked perfectly. They must have an conscientious chef who deserves to be congratulated. My favourite is the cheese soufflé which has a cult following in Bradford on Avon! We tried the burger and Sunday roast today and were not disappointed. Great chips and perfect vegetables. The staff need a special mention as they are just so lovely. Try the Tilia Argentina Malbec £22. It’s a chocolatey rich red wine that’s perfect on a chilly day. I just wish they’d lower bright light levels to make the place a little cosier!

We visited today at lunchtime as my wife had heard tremendous comments on the cheese souffle prepared by Mark the chef. She was not disappointed it was very light and melt in the mouth delecious it was accompanied by a beetroot and walnut rocket salad freshly made and excellent. I chose the bacon brie and cranberry panini with fries and salad. Thoroughly enjoyed and both meals we would really recommend. The waiter and bar staff were friendly and polite as always. Look forward to our next visit.

Firstly, a very warm welcome from the two guys behind the bar (sorry I didn't get your names). A cosy atmosphere, warm, comfy seats etc. Table service in the bar area where the dogs were allowed was attentive without being intrusive. We had steaks (rump and sirloin) and both were truly excellent. They were cooked as requested and just fell apart. We came away just thinking that we had had a nice meal and evening out. Perhaps a little more expensive than other nearby hostelries (which we also tried) but as far as we were concerned - we got what we paid for so I'm not deducting a star for that!

Came for lunch with my better half and honestly couldnt have told staff enough how amazing the customer service was and the food was to die for. As a chef i even brought the chef a pint which made his day. Would completely recommend this place for anyone. Also hats off to Marc and Will for the warm welcome and excellent service will definitely go back if in the area

Called in early on a Saturday afternoon, and were met by friendly staff who offered us a choice of tables, this is because during quieter periods the staff are able to offer customers table service meaning after being seated we had the opportunity to order drinks and review the comprehensive menu. (During busy periods customers order at the bar.)

This is my husband and I's second visit to this lovely pub for Sunday lunch. Both times we have had the mixed roast. Food was brought out really quickly and was well presented. The vegetables were great and I always love cauliflower cheese with a roast . The food was delicious and plenty of it. Highly recommended for a nice relaxed Sunday lunch inside and outside. Dog friendly as well.

Went here for dinner with three family members. The butchers block and ploughman’s were very overpriced for what you got. It was all tasty but just minimal and was worth about £7 rather than the £12 charged. The pudding was the most disappointing, the apple pie was a tiny slice for £6.25 and was all soggy pastry and covered in cinnamon (the menu didn’t state this). Clearly it had been microwaved and wasn’t fresh.

The food is averagely priced and of average quality. The drinks however are very overpriced. Take a 20 metre walk to the Lock inn and save £1.40 per pint.

Attentive service in nice atmosphere. My order of Wiltshire Ham egg and Chips was fine althougth I was not expecting the very thin slices of ham unlke other pub restaurants around B o A which do serve decently thick carved slices.

Visited the Canal Tavern with friends twice recently; once for a 'Sunday lunch' and on the other occasion for an 'everyday' lunch. On both occasions the food was very good and enjoyed by all. The staff members were all very friendly and efficient. Recommended.

Bradford-on-Avon is the prettiest of the towns in West Wiltshre. The Canal Tavern is situated in the most attractive area of the town, immediately adjacent to the canal with super walks and close to the Tithe Barn and The Granary, the beautiful parkland and the Arts & Crafts shops within the area.

Absolutely dreadful! Advertised a la carte menu replaced with a 'bar' menu. Took the waiter 15 minutes to bring a menu and ask if we'd like drinks 40 minutes for food to arrive which was not hot. The pork belly my colleague had was wrapped in gooey fat not crackling, the pumpkin sauce was a teaspoon of orange 'something' and the seasonal veg was mashed potato and some peas. The chicken burger was deep fried and tasted of old fryer fat as did the 'tepid' skin in chips. Presentation of the burger was non existent and the two tiny leaves of lettuce were brown. This was fed back to the waiter when he finally returned to our table his response was he'd mention it to the Chef. The after dinner treat of sticky toffee pudding was solid and rubbery, not moist. The tiniest bit of ice cream and a token gesture at the sauce all was tepid. The dining room was cold and drafty. The decor tired and wall paper peeling off the ceiling and walls. Utterly awful experience with nobody interested in the overall shoddiness of the service and food. Really disappointing, especially as this is the closest hotel to work. A real missed opportunity for this Hotel and Restaurant.

Have just experienced excellent service at the longs Arms. Greeted on arrival by Beth who is an engaging young woman made us feel welcome. The server George and Eloise were attentive and friendly. Great team and enjoyable experience.

Very good lunch, busy but were found a table quickly. Staff we dealt with were all excellent, special thanks to Amelia who recommended the BBQ chicken with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. Will be another addition to our favourite lunch spots..

Food was delicious and the manager made our evening! Kerrie (sorry if it’s spelt wrong) was brilliant. She was funny, hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. We will absolutely be back! 💖

Stopped off for a late lunch/early dinner. So much to choose from. Had the steak and ale pie with mash and the steak and kidney pudding with mash. Both delicious, hot and plentiful. Amazing value for money. Staff very attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Lovely place for families, dog friendly too. 5 star on all fronts.
