Best place to start a night out in wakey. Great food and pleasant staff

No fish. No Pinot Grigio. No vinegar. Chicken burger dry and had to ask for the pot of burger sauce. Macaroni cheese tasteless and stringy. Place looked dirty, especially the carpets. Arms were sticking to the tables, so dirty. Avoid this place at all costs. Would give no stars if possible.

I called in for a bite to eat and the menu has improved since my last visit. Some really good stuff on it. Definitely worth a visit. The food arrived fast too.and reasonably priced.

Went on a Tuesday afternoon and there was me and 4 other people in there. Friendly bar staff and reasonably priced drinks. Can't rate food because it wasn't being served and there was no atmosphere which isn't surprising given the time of day.

They shut part of the seating area down at dinner times.. understandable but it means a lot of couples sitting at tables meant for 6 or more. They do a lovely kebab meat and chips which was new on the menu and means I will go in even more now.

Me and my family love this place we always have such a wonderful time. The staff are friendly and helpful. Great food .we will return again and again

Just a city centre Wakefield pub with ding food and not interested staff serving

Visit twice today either side of an event in Wakefield. Food was great. The venue itself is spacious and tidy. Nice atmosphere. Gray value. Very dog friendly. Everything a pub should be really.

To be honest, we went in for food on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, so I wouldn't expect it to be rocking atmosphere wise but we really enjoyed our food and the staff were lovely.

Just an all-around great pub. Foods good, standard pub food. Good service. I love that they look after one of their locals by reserving him his table near the bar and pass his drinks over, shows they do look after you. Good place to meet your friends. Drag shows are ace too

Called in had drinks & a sandwich to eat this is a decent size pub with lots of seating areas the bar had a great choice of drinks & the sandwich was well presented, I would recommend a visit it’s worth it,

Just an average expensive pub!!

The food has become way too expensive and so has beer cider etc. £4.90 for one Guinness is pure greed. The cowboy burger used to come with onion rings in it, the burger used to be a lot bigger. Marstons sort yourself out, im not paying almost £10 for less of a burger

First time, and it won't be the last. Popped in on a Saturday midday, and it was busy. We needed to wait for a table. Then waited a hour for food! But it was a very busy weekend. The rhubarb festival weekend so everywhere was busy. Overall it was good.

Nice pub shame about the staff, very slow as evidenced by the long wait to be served, miserable faces, and seem to have the attitude that they're doing the customer a favour by serving them. Surprised as it's a Craft Union pub. Sorry its a franchised Marstons.

Good grief, went in about 4pm with a woman leaving the pub showing somebody her bottom and screaming (laughing) when we got in there was a group of woman screaming and laughing. I'm not against people having a laugh but when you have have a screach, shrill laught maybe calm it down. The tables were being cleared slowly but no one came out to wipe any of them down while I was there. Ours was filthy which is the reason we didn't eat there. I assumed this was because the 3 chimneys was closed. I realise the pub has no control of who is in and leaving the pub but the cleanliness needs looking at. Bit disappointed as we were looking forward our visit.

Ordered food, which took over 45 minutes to arrive the place wasn’t that busy or serving much food and I had a child with me waiting that long. When the food came out I had around 5 pieces of chicken in my curry and naan was soggy, my little girls sausage was burnt and too hard, my mums burger meat was dry and a few strand of lettuce. As one of the staff members approached to ask if everything was ok we asked if more salad such as tomatoes etc could be added to the burger as it stated came with salad the waiter shrugged his shoulders and walked away. As my mum was getting served for drinks she asked for an Americano with room to put milk in as she was told coffee always comes with frothy milk which she doesn’t like, to then be told by the server with a smerk ‘you know you aren’t meant to drink it like that’ my mum explained again I don’t like frothy coffee and I was told you don’t make it any other way. The server then put the Americano on the bar and said next time order a coffee. Unfortunately as we visited here quite alot we will not be visiting anymore and really disappointed in the service

It's lovely. Pleasant staff, reasonable priced food, drinks on the average to expensive side, but ok, especiallyif there's offers on what you are drinking. It's the kind of place you could lose a few hours in.

Staff are lovely, and my customer loves it here after being at work all day.

My friends and I (all pensioners) came for Xmas lunch, table set nice with crackers and festive napkins and oh my goodness the food was outstanding from starters to succulent turkey and dessert, the sticky toffee pudding that I had was the lightest, tastiest pudding I've ever eaten and all this for £16.99 per head! But not only that, the pub was very very busy, with other people having food from the main menu, but service was still impeccable, the staff ran around making sure everyone was taken care of. I'd also like to say, I don't know how the chef coped, but they did, so thank you for a fantastic afternoon.

The food was nice, but the chips weren't to my test, but that is a personal dislike.

Despite pub being very busy I got served and the food order arrived quickly. Used to use wetherspoons in Wakefield but the Calder and Hops is much better. Also they let dogs in.

Monday afters ,a few people in service was good but food was poor ( think weatherspoons) or farmfoods ! Wouldn't eat there again but ok for a drink

Greeted by Harry, food order placed had one minute to decide, quick for me lol, as they was just closing for food orders, had a lovely meal served perfect and most importantly all hot, top marks, thankyou 😋.

Don't go if your hungry portion were very small and after 1 hour wait saying they had groups in we were next they served another 5 tables who came in after us refused my blue light discount why I don't no absolute terrible food and experience definitely not going back there

Run out of baguettes, which I understand however, they must have dropped half the chicken on the way over to the table! It didn't even cover half the sandwich. Also run out of a few beers and got my drink order wrong.

For a Pub...the food was really good...it wasn't long from ordering to coming out ...hot!. Friendly and pleasant staff there.

Called in here for the first time in a while on 20/10/2023 mid afternoon for a drink. Had a pint of San Miguel that was excellent! Used to come in here years back when it was The Gate, can't speak for what it's like on an evening but nice relaxed atmosphere through the afternoon with a few people in as well.

I like it in Calder and hops, staff are friendly, price isn't too bad and a good atmosphere.

The music is awful. The Guinness is one of the worst pints I’ve ever had the misfortune of being served. And the food… well was ok, it wasn’t cold and there were decent portions. My partner had steak but didn’t get a steak knife. My burger was over cooked. But at least the food wasn’t cold.

Ordered spicy burger, cane well over cooked, bought sirloin steak medium rare, it came with a butter knife, onion rings greasy as hell, chips over cooked. The Guinness isn't the best, we've definitely had better in weatherspoons.

If you like the band busted , then this is ideal venue ! ....pretty sure I heard the same song of the band X3 in an hour 🤔 ...but great atsmpohere

We last visited in July and had a good experience (4out of 5*). This visit around 3pm on Fri 29th Sept was terrible. I fancied Southern Fried Hunter's Chicken but they had none left, so we both ordered Hunter's Chicken, which is usually very nice and good value. When it arrived we were a bit shocked. My wife said not to say anything but I had to call the member of staff across and ask if we had been given small portions by mistake or if the meals were the normal size. He said they are as ordered. I asked where our grilled tomato was, he went into the kitchen and returned to tell us they had run out of tomatoes. (Best take all the burgers off the menu then!) I asked why we had been given a few little strips of iceberg lettuce, when the menu states the meal is finished with rocket. He didn't have an answer. The chef didn't come out to apologise. Most places would have brought out a few onion rings, mushrooms or chips as a substitute for the grilled tomatoes and rocket, but not here, not today. There seemed to be a real lack of customer care and we won't be returning for food. Poor effort.

Halfway decent town centre boozer, not that there is much competition nowadays. But seriously it had a Christmas tree up on September the 25th. SEPTEMBER THE TWENTY-FIFTH!

Rude staff , they even took my daughters drink from her even though she is 19 , an absolute horrible place , will never go back again, and the steak was as tough as old boots .

In the last few months the pub has gone downhill, all good staff have left the pubs attracting not the best clientel. Can't get a well poured pint. Diabolical management and staff that are lazy and clearly untrained as they are desperate. Music is more like a festival than a quiet family pub.

This place is great for eating on a weekday. I would highly recommend the steak night on a Thursday, it is very tasty and also great value for money. It also has a great atmosphere on a weekend. The staff are great and the manager Michael has really turned the place around.

Nice place worth a visit we called in with friends had a couple of drinks, friendly staff, pub clean plenty of room inside to sit.

Great lunch. We each had Hunter's Chicken, which was lovely, followed by Jam Sponge pudding on a special offer. The sponge had plenty of strawberry jam and custard and was a real winner. The food arrived hot and service was good, with a friendly waitress who was considerate enough to ask if we wanted a few minutes between serving the main and the pudding. Next time I'll have to ask if the jam pudding comes in a larger portion if ordered as a separate dish.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch at the Calder and Hops. Would highly recommend. Staff are always very friendly and helpful. My favourite pub to catch up with friends. They have also accommodated our Xmas parties over the last few years catering for over 30 people and they were amazing. Thank you x

Quick, easy and fine for a quick pub lunch with friends this is really a 'Meh' review - I'd go back - but not for a special occasion. Prone to serving the wrong order (mid week lunchtime) which adds to the fun (& is sorted without fuss) but shouldn't really happen.

I come for lunch twice a week with my dad i travel from filey North Yorkshire and i am so happy with the food and the service everyone is so friendly. Sean is very helpful and has always answered my questions and helped me with my needs. Amazing place to eat and be comfortable. Thankyou all staff at swan and cygnet especially Sean.

Called in for some food, a nice place to sit and eat, music not too loud, but my tuna melt baguette was not very hot. Chips were great though.

Stood at bar waiting to be served. Bar staff ignored us and carried on dealing with friends. Was not prepared to be ignored for over 10 mins. First time ever we walked out of a bar without a drink.

Visited on bank holiday, close to food finishing time. Little quieter than it's usual busy atmosphere but made absolutely little difference to service and quality. Both myself and partner really enjoyed our food. Ordered 2 starters and 2 burgers that was customised to our liking. Kitchen note must of been arm's length when sent through!! Chef (Raz) didn't let us down and cooked it spot on. 100% The best and only Lgbt Friendly Food Venue in Wakefield. Well done to Michael and his team for maintaining a top knotch place to eat and drink the last couple of year's.
