Not been to La Cage for about 5 years. Read the recent reviews and wondered if we should go elsewhere, but the memories of the past drew us in. So glad we went..it was almost as good as we remembered! The food was certainly perfectly acceptable-the frogs legs were a tiny bit undercooked, but the duck breast was excellent, and the crème brûlée was perfect. Only one rose on offer, but it was fine. The tea was served alongside a pretty little pink milk jug which was ‘A Present from Bradford’! Service was friendly, and acceptable, a bit slow at times, but the staff responded quickly to the merest signal. As always, excellent value for a Hampstead restaurant!

We spent a delightful evening with friends in this charming intimate restaurant. It is a long time since we last visited and I am pleased to say that the experience was just as enjoyable. The staff were really friendly and the food was excellent. The fish was fresh and beautifully cooked. It`s rare these days to go to a restaurant and sit down to freshly pressed white tablecloths which added to the sense of occasion. Ignore any of the negative reviews you might see on this site. I don`t believe them !

Soon after the end of Covid lockdown, we booked for lunch. The website needs to be updated. The top reviews listed as "NEW" were dated 2015. When we clicked on "book a table", nothing happened. Still, we phoned and got a table (so perhaps that worked in our favour, as everywhere was quite booked up!). It's in a lovely, typical Hampstead, location with an old fashioned bow window, where we were seated so enjoyed a good view of the street and passers-by. The service was fine, the food pleasant enough except... every dish on the set menu came liberally topped with grated cheese, something like gruyere, very pleasant in itself, but not on top of prawns, chicken, etc. We would have liked some dishes cheese-free, especially the vegan among us. Then the 2 desserts offered were equally rich and creamy - though admittedly delicious - a choice of chocolate mousse or creme brulee. Some of us wanted a piece of fruit after the rich mains, but although fruit salad was an option on the a la carte menu, we were not allowed to have it on the set menu, not even at a lower supplement. They let us stay as long as we liked, everything else was fine, but that set menu should have offered more variety and more fresh fruit and veg.

Lovely restaurant tucked away in Hampstead’s quaint cobbled streets. Location is idyllic and staff were friendly and attentive. Bread served on arrival was a nice touch. Table cloths and napkins were lovely. We had saint emilion wine which was a very good price and very tasty! Food was delicious- can’t go wrong with french onion soup! Duck and beef were perfect. Definitely recommend.

This is NOT a French restaurant. The owners don't know anything about French food, and you will be served a small roast chicken (not fresh but probably from either a jar or some other sort of pre-made food) with some red wine gravy advertised as (and for the price of) Coq au vin. The food is really bad and the service is appalling. Also, when we asked for the bill, they added both a service charge and a a cover fee. Because we were very disappointed with the quality of the food (canteen food quality), we asked to remove the service charge as well as the cover charge (the service wasn't good either) and the owner started having a go at us for being bad people for not paying the 2 charges they added on top of the food. Since she was making a big fuss about us being bad customers I did tell her about the quality of the food and the fact that she was trying to pass this as French food, she then started yelling at me, that she was Italian and therefore she knew about French food. I told her that I am French and that I know what French food is and that what she served us wasn't either French or fresh, and she started yelling at me even more. We still had to pay a large amount of money for canteen food, which we found was a total rip off. We are still both shocked at the way we were treated and we will make a complaint.

I’ve been to this restaurant many times and the food is always good or very good. The waiting staff now are not well trained although they mean well. For example a Bloody Mary was a bit of a mystery to one waiter. But as I say they meant well and were smiley and that actually makes a change from some restaurants. Because the restaurant is small any table that has a group that have no awareness that other people are in the room, shout and speak (deliberately) in loud voices. The restaurant senior staff could manage that but they don’t. Also while it’s not uncommon for shorts and t shirts in even the smartest of places, Cage allows anything and sitting near so done who looks and smells unpleasant is not congenial towards and enjoyable lunch. Finally while of course space is limited, toilets so close to food preparation is these days a worry.

The service wasn’t great - our waiter was struggling to understand what we were saying - but the poor part was that at 8.15pm on a Saturday night with a pre-booked table, they had already run out of duck breast, the butternut squash that came with the duck confit and even still water! The menu is limited so the few choices should be available on the busiest night of the week. We had to ask for our coats after getting up after finishing our meal, and despite some patrons being shown to the door we were barely acknowledged. Definitely not how we remembered this cute little restaurant.

We went for dinner on NYE. There was a 2 or 3 course menu that we went for. It was very reasonably priced, almost cheap for a NYE occasion, but this now makes sense. The place looks like a quite little fancyish bistro from outside. The inside looks nice overall, but there are many let downs. They try to make the restaurant look fancy but the waiters are dressed in very casual and scruffy looking clothes. No one is very friendly or efficient, we almost felt rushed. Food wise, also a major let down. French onion soup was horrible, goats cheese salad was decent, both main courses (skate wing and coq au vin) were not very tasty either, and the chicken definitely not authentically french. The whole experience is not what you would imagine when you see the look of the place from outside and it’s location, Hampstead. I wouldn’t suggest anyone tries to place. However, I will give them 3 stars because the place does have a lot of potential.

A speculative booking, for a place I'd long seen and wondered about dining at. Old friends from Watford had asked about somewhere French, not too central, and early evening on New Years Eve. And La Cage Imaginaire just suited the need! And with the Flask almost next door for a quiet pint as I was early. Perfect! And we were royally treated, even with a fourth added to the party at less than a couple of hours notice. Service was relaxed, and allowed plenty of time to talk and enjoy. The food was excellent - particularly experimenting with frogs legs for the first time in around forty years; and the rack of lamb was just right, rosey and juicy. The others didn't want dessert, but were more than happy to share nibbling at the cheese selection. The Muscadet we had was full of fruit with that sufficient dryness and acidity to balance the richness of the meal. Definitely coming again!

It was a pleasant lunch with nice food. I had 2 issues however: First, when we arrived at 12 midday, half an hour after the restaurant says that it is open, there were people coming and going fetching and carrying laundry from the back of the restaurant out through the front door. That was bad enough but the door was required to be open for this, on a cold day, and we felt the cold from our table (in fact looking round the restaurant I could not see a single table that would not be affected by this, or we would have asked to be moved). This was not the only time that goods were transported through the restaurant, as there was another delivery that arrived half way through our meal. We felt we were in a passage rather than a restaurant. I imagine there is no back door to the restaurant through which all this transporting of goods could take place, but that is not our problem - we want to come to a restaurant with a nice ambiance. Maybe with this problem, the items could be delivered at another time - a bit of thought might resolve the problem. The other issue was that our puddings were served to us at different times. There was a gap of about 10 minutes between the first 2 and the last 2 puddings coming to our table of 4. Mine, as one of the first, was a hot pudding which exacerbated the situation as I was anxious it would cool down. Neither of these issues are what I would expect from a restaurant of this class.

As a place to try once, with a charming setting in the heart of Hampstead, La Cage Imaginaire is worth a visit. The restaurant is cramped in its every corner, which clearly makes it a nightmare at busy periods for the waiting staff, and the kitchen struggles at busier times. Being served at the end of a long Saturday evening meant that, for us, our mains and desserts were of variable quality and freshness -- the fresher dishes suggesting that the restaurant at its best is very good indeed. It simply does not have the space it needs to cater for the numbers it aspires to serve. The menu is varied -- possibly too much so, given the cramped quarters in the kitchen -- and the wine list is impressive. I would imagine that the restaurant is at its best when it is half-full on a rainy lunchtime -- but that may not be a sustainable business model for the owners, who seem to be trying their best in a restaurant that is simply too small to deliver on its ambitions.

Had a half bottle of wine at £17.50 which was well over the top, but we didn’t want a full bottle. The coffee was well over priced at £3.50 for an Americano which was only just over 1/2 a cup. Would avoid that next time. The House wine was £17.50 a bottle, so it was naughty to only offer very few 1/2 bottles all well overpriced. There was also a 12 1/2 percent service charge, which seems to be becoming normal, so overall the cost was about £78 for a set 3 course with water and coffee, + 1/2 bottle of wine.

My previous review was for our visit which was a New Year's Eve set piece. We've just managed to return for a more leisurely meal and were even more impressed. We both had the fig, goat cheese and beetroot salad with pomegranate to start followed by Coq Au Vin. The latter was unbelievably good - tender meat falling off the bone into the succulent juices and vegetables which accompanied it. The salad managed to avoid being too heavy - often a goat's cheese salad can get too enthusiastic with the cheese with the result that your appetite for the main course is dulled. We shared desserts - a dark chocolate mousse and a prune and apple tatin - both were perfect. My only gripe is that glasses of wine come in one size - large (250 ml) - I would have preferred to see a 175 ml option but we resolved this with a half bottle (2 x 187 ml) of very drinkable St. Emilion. The pricing is currently based on two courses for £22-95 or three courses for £25-95. Our total bill including service (we didn'ty have coffee) was £80 which, in 2019, seems to me outstanding value for a high quality French dinner in Hampstead. Thank you!

The food was excellent. However there were dead flowers on the table in stagnant green water. We asked for them to be removed. Tea pot had chipped lid, and ladies toilet Basin was dirty. Have been going there for many years, and it certainly looked tired.

I would highly recommend not going to this restaurant! I sent my fillet steak back as it had a large piece of white cartilage running through the steak. I didn’t ask for a replacement just for the cost of it to be removed from my bill. 30 minutes later a new steak turned up. I told them I didn’t want it as the rest of my party had finished and we wished to leave. The manager came over and started to have a go at me in front of my party and the whole restaurant. I got up to leave and the manager was swearing and shouting at me. Calling me so many disgusting names. I have never had such a bad experience at a restaurant in my life or ever had a manager speak so disgustingly to me.

I haven't had the chance to go to this restaurant for a couple of years. Occasional place to meet up with my sister on an afternoon out. I just like everything about it and it doesn't seem to have changed much at all (in a good way.) Lunch for 2 from the lunch menu - starters, main course, glass of wine each, coffees (tap water with ice) for £60 is pretty good. My starter of aubergine etc topped with cheese was piping hot and delicious. We both had a salmon main course and it was nicely cooked. Pleasant and attentive young waiter, nice friendly female chef. No rush or pressure so a very relaxing 2 hours.

Lovely, local restaurant, hidden at the end of Flask Walk. Really idyllic atmosphere - you could be transported abroad. Food was tasty and great value for money. We have walked past many times and always said "we must give it a try". I am so pleased we did. We will be back.

Have eaten there many times, but quality of meat was not up to standard,The tables were very close together meaning that you could not stretch out your legs under the table as the pedestal to make more room for as many tables as possible was right in front of you under table. We will not return

Service was very slow. The meat on the lamb rack was tough. Also it was individual chops cooked separately and not a rack. Will not be in a rush to go back.

We always enjoy our evenings at La Cage and have been coming for many years. The service is excellent, as is the food and we are always made to feel very welcome. Equally appreciated, there is no music and the ambiance is quiet and relaxed. The only reason for a slightly lower star rating this time for the food was that my husband’s duck was too rare for his taste and had to be sent back for further cooking. We hope to continue enjoying our meals at La Cage for many more years to come!

This is good bistro food with very healthy portions in a prestige location in Hampstead. Maybe not the best food in the world, but very enjoyable. The room is also a step up from many bistros so would suit date night. Deserts are huge and very good - loved the Tarte Tatin.

This cozy French restaurant offers a set menu with fairly limited food and wine options. However, the quality is exquisite. Your taste buds are in for a delight. We tried the duck, the sea-bass and the aubergine. All three were great. For starter we had the onion soup and the linguine. And for pudding we had chocolate mousse and cream brûlée. All were perfect. I specially like the linguini.

the special lamb dish of the day was not available so they had lamb chops instead. They were not tender and the meat tough. The Salmon was ok but a bit overcooked. Service very nice and the atmosphere is lovely, would go back but maybe not go with the price fix lunch menu.

Terrible experience. The first course of Aubergine was stone cold. The manager? was dressed in workout gear and the service was all over the place. Can't say enough how disappointed we where and no idea how they seem to get such good reviews on this site. It was total amature hour for the whole lunch. We will not be back and I'm taking reviews on thi site with a large grain of salt from now on.

Outstanding classic bistro. Really enjoyed ourselves on a weekend away. Summer afternoon, nice place, great food and service. The menu was lovely - classic French fixed price menu so tasty and great value. As someone who eats out once or twice a week with business meals and travel it was the best meal I’ve eaten out in some months. I’ll go back as soon as anywhere near.

I have been very disappointed by our dinner for 9 people (1 birthday + 2 father's day). Wine is probably stored in very poor conditions (had to change twice the bottle to get the 3rd one more or less ok). The waitress openly shown us we were painful and even told us we do not know anything about wines! For French people from which a sommelier, it is quite an insult! They do not make cakes themselves so they buy it for you and serve it. That was all right but they bought the mille-feuille too early in advance so the biscuit was too wet indeed (not crispy anymore). On top i asked them to cut it and they came back with 2 little portions per person so we were not having enough for all guests at the end, which was really embarrassing!!!! I do not recommend you at all this place, go away.
