On the rare occasion I venture into what has become a very depressing city centre, I will meet a friend for a catch up. We use Cafe Nero as we get an offer from our phone provider with any coffee for £1 although I would usually use an independent shop rather than a chain if paying full price. However, even £1 is too much for the awful coffee that is being served. It doesn’t matter which ‘type’ you have, it is bitter. We invariably take it back to the counter and the baristas will offer to change it - they offer an alternative roast - but it is nearly always the same: bitter and undrinkable. The baristas themselves tend to be pleasant and helpful although there appears to be a lack of professional presentation - most look unkempt and as previous reviewers have mentioned, stressed. I have never understood the ridiculous system they use of the barista taking and producing the order, creating a long wait, when it is more efficient to have someone taking the orders and at least one person making them. The cafe itself looks a bit scruffy and the tables are always full of cups and plates, which is annoying. There are some lovely independent shops which offer better coffee and a better atmosphere and regardless of getting a cheap deal in Nero, the independents will be getting my custom in future.

One of the worst Cafe Nero coffee shops I have the (mis) fortune to visit. Seems very understaffed and always massive queues, slow service and bad attitudes. Very dirty and tables never cleaned. I think one of the two staff was having a nervous breakdown when we visited!!!

I used to go to this place often, but recently I have been increasingly put off. The only motivating factor is it stays open to 6 which is a bit later than most other coffee establishments in Sunderland city centre. The coffee products are pricier than almost everywhere else and whilst the quality is fine, I don't see it being any better than coffee elsewhere to warrant the higher price. The staff used to be accommodating and welcoming which is something I expect in a place customers should feel relaxed (hardly an unreasonable expectation) but recently their customer service skills have been lax. Today the trainee barista bluntly told me the till wasn't working, well before closing time. No explanation, no 'sorry for the inconvenience' - just a curt 'it's not working' - she may as well have told me to go away. It is not good enough and reflects badly on whatever training they are given. I don't expect special treatment, just basic manners. Furthermore, tables are often full of the previous customers cups and plates. I appreciate staff can't do everything at once as I have been a waiter myself but really, customers shouldn't always be left to clean up themselves. Unless I really have nowhere else to go, I will consider this establishment a last resort until they go back to their original standards and it starts with treating customers with more respect.

Never the cleanest Sunderland Cafe Nero today was shocking. Two customers feeding their dogs biscuits, and leaving/spreading mess all over the floor. At the same time they opened and ate their own snacks from GREGGS feeding cake to the dogs while drinking Cafe Nero coffee When one of them saw me watching he did pick up all the evidence and put it in the bin but failed to clear up the broken dog biscuits as he trampled the crumbs on the floor. Additionally while the staff cleared tables mess from previous customers was left on the table not cleaned.

This was my first and last visit to this coffee shop. It was totally disorganised with 1 trainee and 1 other member of staff working. The same person took your order, made the sandwiches, took the money and made your drinks. The queue was long and slow and it took about 20 minutes in the queue, which is unacceptable for people on lunch breaks. The actual baguette sandwich was nice but by the time they finished serving and made hot drinks it was cold by the time I got to my table. This was a very poor and disappointing experience and I won't be returning.

Always been my favourite coffee shop to relax in on my own. Total new team as manageress left and now it’s not the same. Miserable male members of staff have no communication skills. Tables rarely cleared… sad to see as was always a lovely friendly place

Rude and discriminatory service in a filthy building. Direct opposite of all other Nero's l have visited. Staff need retraining badly. Awful experience but will not put me off other Nero's which are generally excellent.

5/5 Visit! This store is honestly everything you expect from a Caffè Nero. Me and my partner went in for some nice iced drinks to cool us down on this lovely summers day and we were both NOT disappointed! The lady who served was the manager and honestly her whole conversation was pleasant and it was not awkward when waiting for a drink! Entered the store and she was honest saying she will be a couple of minutes, she is just sanitising the store areas which was great! Will definitely be visiting this store again in the very near future!

Decided to stop off here for a hot chocolate, as we both had 02 perks. The staff are always pleasant. Nice cafe, It was not that busy when we were in, however many tables had not been cleared. We both got hot chocolates, and these are delicious, topped with cream, very tasty. There is outside seating in the summer.

Visited here a few times, as an o2 customer there are usually weekly offers for Café Nero which are a great perk. This entitles you to a free large hot drink. Nice clean café, comfy seats and friendly staff. Drinks are always nice and hot chocolate's are always lovely. Great perk to have and handy for pit stops, handy café in the centre of time.

Caffe Nero can be found at the entrance to the Bridges, just a short walk from the Metro Station, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The coffee was piping hot and the croissants were perfectly brown and crispy.

Drink was as expected. Came in a takeaway cup despite us sitting in, which was unfortunate due to me paying the extra price for sitting in. There were hardly any seats left and we were sat by the door which had a large draught. It also seemed quite cramped meaning it felt like we were sat with other people who were visiting.

Been visiting this shop on and off for about 2 years. I find the staff hit and miss, with the male barista's being more friendly than the female ones. The shop inside is kept very clean and cups are collected very promptly. The coffee is always hot (if requested) with the cups keeping it hot for a good ten minutes. I find customer favouritism a problem in all coffee shops I go into (this one included) the males give more conversation. I find one female barista a little cheeky although she is very efficient. The toilet facilities are very basic with one shared toilet, which always has water on the floor and can sometimes be blocked up. The hand dryer is a little weird and goes and and off at will. The panoramic windows give a really good open vibe and welcoming feel.

Have been a customer for 3 years now. All the stuff is great, very friendly. Food is also nice. They have soups, sandwiches, cakes, hot and cold drinks. The location is really nice. You can sit inside or outside. What i like and appreciate the most is that they offer hot drinks and food from time to time to people whobentertain public outside the shop. Such stuff should really be rewarded for the good deeds! So, if you ever come to Sunderland and The Bridges Msll, head straight to Nero!

This offers Nero's usual range of lovely coffee. Be advised that if you are on your own, you could lose your table as it can get really busy. Visit in the quieter periods of a relaxing drink. The soup is lovely and comes with warmed bread. Nice on a cold day.

Food was good service only passable. Couldn't belive that the Fire Escape Route was a blocked by tables arranged by the Manager/ess. When challenged she just told us to F off which we did. Shame that a good pub was ruined by arrogant owner/manager. Hope she doesn't other premises to ruin!!!

The whipped large ice creams in plain cones were tasteless & in my opinion overpriced due to this. I’d not recommend it for a whipped ice cream. Save your money. There are better quality ice creams in and around for £2.50.
