Caffe 1901 in Newcastle upon Tyne

Arrived as they opened at 9a.m. The coffee was good but the bacon butty was awful . Bacon was totally dried out and clearly hadn’t been cooked that morning, disappointed, as we often call in.

The food is always a wonderful buy the service patchy. They are often very busy and we had an unpleasant experience when attempting to sit at a table and were yelled at by the waitress from the bar then asked to wait outside (it’s literally -3 degrees and there is more than enough room to wait by the entrance). Rude service ruined the £85 pound meal!

Cute coffee place in a cathedral that provides a unique atmosphere. We've been here for breakfast with our dog who was more than welcome with water bowls and treats hanging around for her. I had the vegan breakfast as I was keen to try the avocado on toast and added an egg which was poached to perfection. Not sure about the vegan sausages but I am not vegan so I am probably not the right person to review them but everything on my plate was thoroughly enjoyed with the mushrooms being my highlight. My partner got the eggs royal and he liked them too. The fruit scone was lovely and freshly prepared so make sure to try that too.

Great food and lovely coffee. Enjoyed the burger and Tikka Flatbread, plus a couple of flat whites. Staff are polite and helpful. Is dog friendly as well.

Friendly staff and lovely food and coffee. It’s a busy cafe, which isn’t surprising given my experience here. I arrived at 11:30 on a Friday and got seated straight away. A queue started to form soon after but it seemed to go down quickly. The breakfast was tasty and filling and the flat white was the best I’ve had in ages. I will definitely visit again when I’m in the area.

On one of my regular visits to Jesmond and thought I’d try this venue. Expectation was 5* but delivered 2.5 star. Food lacked so much flavour (Shakshouka but “poached”eggs were like bullets and rest was sloppy (tin of tomatoes) and lacked any depth of flavour but hit with loads of paprika so that it was overpowering and not enough sourdough to soak up the runny and sloppy dish) and coffee (white Americano) below average. Wait time from order to the table was 30 minutes with no heads up that it would be that long. Cooked from fresh doesn’t mean to start from scratch…..the tomato base with onions, peppers and garlic should be waiting ready but lacked so much depth of flavour. Expensive for what it is…..and that kicked a bit given the cramped table to eat at, slow service and below average coffee. Won’t be visiting again…..over £20 per person for an average brunch…..Dick Turpin got hanged for daylight robbery whilst these guys lure you to a church!!? The quirky, boho vibe they’re trying to peddle doesn’t disguise what you end up with…..slow service, average overpriced food and beverages…..🤔Disappointing

He visitado varias veces, todas las cuales la comida ha sido deliciosa! Esta vez disfruté de los buñuelos de maíz con huevos escalfados, que estaba muy bueno. Mi amigo disfrutó del Shakshouka con vino con una gran porción de pan fresco. El gabinete de pasteles siempre está bien lleno de un montón de pasteles impresionantes y bandejas de horneado. Esta vez no nos dieron algo dulce, pero disfrutamos de un indulgente chocolate caliente de galletas. Hay muchos asientos, se permiten perros y solo se puede caminar.

A pocos pasos del metro y sin duda vale la pena. Ambiente bullicioso y bastante ocupado, pero nos sirvieron rápidamente y la comida era deliciosa. Recomendaría la salchicha a tope ya que recibe un montón de salchicha!

Hermosas bandejas grandes, enormes y muy deliciosas, que me encajonaron y me llevé a casa. Hermosa arquitectura y ambiente en esta antigua iglesia. El personal era muy acogedor y amable. Sin duda volveremos a sentarnos y probar el menú de desayuno todo el día.

Find it hysterical that you refused to serve two people soup at 15.35 despite sitting them down before 15.30 and not telling them the kitchen closes at 15.30. Won’t bothering using your cafes anymore. Shocking.

Horrible experience. I waited 40 minutes for my food, during which I had to drink my entire cup of coffee just to keep it from getting cold. When the food finally arrived, it was the wrong order, and the staff simply said it would take a while - was this going to be an extra 40 min? They just stared at me. We ended up sharing the one plate that was right and asked for a refund. The waitstaff seemed completely unqualified— offering no solution or compensation. They could at least mentioned that they would prioritise my plate. The dish we shared was also tasteless. I absolutely do not recommend this place!

This is a fabuluos place, and I wish that it was closer to us in Harrogate! Example of great service: we were in the area to take our elderly aunt for a lunch. Even though I understand that they do not take reservations, they did so in this instance so that our aunt was not likely to stand around waiting. When we arrived, the reservation had not been communicated to the person with whom we spoke so there was a bit of confusion but, within two minutes we were comfortably sat down and completely happy. Two minutes later the manager was with us apologising for the inconvenience (there really was none) and offering us a drink to say sorry. So, in addition to outstanding food (incredibly fresh bread and fillings) and lovely decor and ambiance, the focus on keeping customers happy was really exceptional, and very much appreciated. Will definitely return next time that we are up!

A solid 5-star experience! A beautiful location with excellent service and delicious food, all in fair prices. The biggest bonus: dogs are welcome, water bowls are abundant! Visited on my own and had my dog with me, he felt really comfortable and fell asleep on the floor. Don’t miss out, can’t wait to go back again.

Friendly staff, quirky, not cheap. Food was nice and I'd go back if in area again. Edit: we did come back couple of years later. Still good. Dog friendly too.

I visited on my own with my dog and got seated after lunch no problem. I ordered the breakfast burger again as it was so nice last time and comes with lovely little hash brown bites. Their cake cabinet always looks impressive as well as the cakes and tray bakes being tasty and good portion sizes. There are treats available for dogs. There are also water stations to help yourself too.

Don't know what was up with this place today but the service was terrible. Food kept going to the wrong tables and took a long time to turn up.

The food was good but unfortunately the tables and cutlery's hygiene is poor. My child's high chair was not clean at all, we had to wipe it ourselves.

Breakfast here for the 1st time and will be returning staff were very polite and friendly and the food was amazing 👏

Brilliant bacon roll and coffee. Menu looks very interesting. The place was mobbed when I was there. People queueing outside when I left, always a good sign!

They asked me not to use my laptop they have a policy about not using laptops and stay in for a long period of time ! Which I found rude and not considered lots of ppl like to work while being out in a cafe enjoying the atmosphere and being productive at the same time .

Very busy for a reason! I love it here, i do prefer their other menu in the other 1901 by manors station but this place is great too. A lot of variety in the menu and service is good. Can be quite busy though so would bare this in mind if going.

Stopped by with my daughter for a bite to eat, she ordered a sandwich type order off the menu and I ordered a brunch being the full English breakfast... The food was late in coming taking 35 minutes which is not normal having eaten here many times before. In fact we finished our drinks before the food arrived. My daughter's food was on a plate far too small and not very well presented. I had to ask for a side plate to put the toasted bread and butter on for my breakfast order. My daughter's order was bland and the coleslaw type side felt a little old . The breakfasts have historically been good here however on this occasion particular bad. The tinned mushrooms were dried, shriveled and hard clearly being left out for a long time. The two pieces of bacon were old shrivelled and dry and the frozen hash browns were tasteless. I also wasn't asked at the start when ordering how I wanted my eggs which luckily were poached and acceptable. Overall we both felt unsatisfied and basically ripped off as you have to pay when ordering your food beforehand. I did mention the breakfast being poor and in particular the dry stone like mushrooms to the waitress who wasn't particularly interested and it didn't go any further. The breakfast and menu prices have gone up in the last 18 months but the quality has gone down. At those prices I would expect fresher ingredients being used and cooked well. Overall a disappointing experience and I don't think we want to go back anytime soon.

My friend and I visit 1901 nearly every Sunday morning at 9am. We have our weekly breakfast and catch up. It's dog friendly and customer friendly. The staff are excellent, the food is superb and the relaxed quirky atmosphere is just perfect.

I visited Caffe 1901 Bistro after recently moving to the area. I was immediately impressed. The Bistro has a great vibe and even better coffee. The staff were all attentive and the place was clean. I recommend the millionaire shortbread- substantial portion that was incredibly tasty. Clearly a popular place as there was a consistent stream of people coming through the doors with some needing a short wait to be seated. Now I know why! I will definitely be visiting again.

What a find! Beautiful restored building with lots of space and many different tables and types of seating and a few tables outside. Received a warm welcome when we got there and was offered a few different tables to sit even though clearly very popular. Plenty mouth-watering vegan options and all of the food being served from the kitchen looked beautiful. All of the floor staff were polite and professional. The menu is good, lots of choices of drinks too with options for kids portions within the normal menu. The photo is of a vegan breakfast and bahn-mi. Street parking through the day seems pretty easy to find. Lastly, have to mention the staff again. Obviously you pay for good food and drink but it's the staff that have to run the whole floor. I felt really comfortable and noticed their attention to detail. Looking forward toy next visit.

Staff very welcoming, food was excellent, decor was really unusual and lovely, dogs allowed here. Gluten free options available. Very popular. It is in the student area of Jesmond. Tables are a collection of different things, like and old school desk, or sewing machine stand. A very enjoyable experience.

Usually love the food & atmosphere here, have found the service can be quite slow at times, bur understand that there may be waits during peak times. However, on this visit the customer service was unwelcoming and rude. We came in at 3:50pm to the cafe, to all the cakes and traybakes being removed from the counter and wrapped up. I asked the waitress behind the counter are they closing, are we not able to have a cake. To which she responded they were just wrapping and boxing them up ready to be put away. I myself found this quite hard and off putting to choose a cake when there's nothing to see in the counter & the remaining cakes are being taken away in front of me. I said to the waitress it's not very welcoming walking into a cafe and all the bakes are being boxed up, over an hour before closing time. To which she responded the names are written on the counter, it's not hard to decide- no apology whatsoever. It's was far from the friendly service expected at a popular independent cafe in Jesmond. Making quite a hostile and cold visit overall.

Visited here for the first time last week after a recommendation. Lovely place! Lovely staff! Great decor and vibe. Fantastic menu that also caters very well for vegans, we had the breakfast butties (one meat one vegan) they were superb. Also dog friendly 😊

Was visiting a friend for the weekend in Newcastle who lives in Heaton and we decided to come here for brunch after seeing the reviews and good rating. It's a rainy day and we got there just before 11am and already there was a queue. We waited around 15 mins before being seated which wasn't too bad at all. But a tip to always come before 11 otherwise you are looking at waiting time for at least half an hour. The queue never disappeared while we were there for 1.5 hours and it's a cold day too so just factor that into your planning. You order at the counter after being given menus from the staff and we went with the salted caramel banoffee french toast and the beef Benedict. I also ordered an americano and my friend went with an oat latte. Coffee wasn't bad, no sour aftertaste which is my preference and it's a big mug of coffee so good value for money. Food wise gotta say it's quite average. My french toast was rather dry after the first couple bites and they also didn't add enough sauce to make it easier to chew and swallow. Liked the hazelnut crunch and Nutella toppings but would have appreciated a lot more of them. The slow-cooked beef Benedict was also disappointing. It was rather bland and dry although the portion of meat was very generous. The dish just didn't have much flavour on the whole which was rather a shame. We did like the interior design of the place and it's extremely spacious. It's a nice place for friends and family to catch up over some food and drinks but if you are looking for food quality this is probably not the best café out there.

They do an extensive range of really nice breakfast and lunch dishes. This includes the standard issue eggs Benedict. Which looks lovely. There's some stuff with avocado. Yuk! It does get busy. Arrive early to not have to queue. The queue does get long. You've been warned. All on one level including the toilets, so very wheelchair friendly. They also have a disabled toilet. The service is good. But they do look sick of their lives. They do take out and have an awesome selection of cakes.

Visited following a recommendation while in Newcastle and I can wholeheartedly say that the food is outstanding. Pricing initially looks a little on the expensive side but once you're served your meal and dig in it's worth every penny. The full English Hash was the best breakfast I've ever had. A must visit for anyone serious about good food.

There’s a few of the Caffe 1901’s around but this is the one for brunch. Good if you want a nice quality safe and traditional brunch option. The menu choices are standard. Didn’t have any problems with the full english. I added halloumi which was great. The breakfast brioche was tasty. There can be a bit of a queue on the weekend but it’s cosy inside so the queue moves quite quickly.

Have searched for a nice breakfast place in Newcastle for a while now which offers a great atmosphere mixed with amazing breakfast and this place is IT , 10/10 across the board. From music, food to staff all excel in 1901 Jesmond.

Best vegetarian breakfast I’ve ever had! My boyfriend also found the standard Full English equally impressive. Such fantastic ingredients paired with generous portions. I am a visitor to the area and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a delicious breakfast in such a cosy place.

A nice vibrant busy place that serves up good quality food

We visited for Breakfast after 9.30 and had to wait for a table. A wait that was well worth it. Fantastic food from a varied menu, presentation, quality and price were all very good. Very nice and friendly staff.

Whilst visiting Newcastle for a weekend we popped in for breakfast. There was quite a Que outside but we managed to get a table after 15 minutes. When ordering we were told there was a 35 minute wait for food and when our food was not with us at 45 we asked how much longer our food would be. The food came out literally a minute later and the server went above and beyond to rectify the delay. Thank you!

Very busy on a Saturday morning, but got a seat easy enough. Breakfast arrived before the coffee (which I think they forgot about). Good standard breakfast, but the staff are not particularly personable, but certainly not rude….possibly down to how busy they were. Overall, decent breakfast, coffee below average and service a tad lacking. Good, but not great.

I used to love 1901 and I used to go all the time. The staff where friendly and the foods great. However the customer service has gotten worse and the staff have been unfriendly. So we've stopped going.

Excellent tasty food with lots of options. Well made hot latte. Something for everyone with extensive menu and fresh baking. Cosy comfortable atmosphere , friendly helpful staff. What more can you ask for? The best breakfast/brunch place we visited on our trip to the UK. So good we went back the next day again before we left town. Everything was made fresh and tasted great in a world awash with reheated food. The revive fresh juice was superb as was my 1901 breakfast brioche! What every breakfast/ brunch place aspires to be but very few ever achieve. Well done!

It's a really cute, quaint place right in the heart of Jesmond. Lots of students and tourists alike, which brought a lovely atmosphere. Whilst the food and drinks were of great quality and large size, the price of coffee (in particular iced) was some of the most expensive I've seen. Understand this is due to locally sourcing ingredients and the location of the café in Jesmond, but worthwhile keeping in mind if you're planning a visit.

This is a gem of a place, really nice food. I enjoyed it so much i had breakfast here 2 mornings in a row. So super handy for the university close by

Just visited today as we just moved here, I absolutely love the decor and cosy feel, went up to order and the lady on the till wasn’t friendly which was a shame, however the food was absolutely amazing,I struggled to finish it, so well done to the chefs. I’m vegetarian and there’s plenty of options for vegans and veggies. The only thing I would say is that it wasn’t explained to us that there was two menus so the first one we picked up I wasn’t keen on the options, but then we realised there must be breakfast stuff on as we saw some hash browns so my boyfriend went to the menu box and saw there was several, maybe this should be explained when asking for a table or they should be on the tables ready, just a tip! Overall was nice and would go again. :)

Nice cafe in an unusual setting in the heart of jesmond. Very popular and a bit of a students haunt. Whilst it wasn’t overly busy on my visit, I still had to wait a good few minutes to get served. Seemed to be too much interaction between staff and not enough emphasis on getting on with serving. Waited at least 15 minutes for my coffee. Unacceptable!

The food might be lovely but the service is sadly lacking. Took ages for anyone even to approach and ask if wanted a table. Then waited ages for one to be cleaned. Which would normally be fine but the waitress had a real attitude and quite clearly couldn’t be bothered. Overrated and won’t be back.

Friendly service and great breakfast . We had to wait for a table for 5 but that’s surely a good sign and we weren’t disappointed. Just a suggestion, you could upsell by offering waiting guests drinks whilst they wait. Lovely stuff

Service was very disappointing. A waitress came out to us whilst waiting and said "Table for 3?"then said "Not got a table, just asking". We were seated for 20 minutes until a waitress asked us if we were OK. We replied we were waiting for someone to take our order and only told then we had to order at the counter. This also happened on the next table. There was an issue with another table where the party walked straight to the table and the waitress was quite sarcastic across to the serving counter when she didnt receive a reply from her colleagues. At least 3 instances that we saw of customers, including us, given the wrong order. Perhaps some of the staff were inexperienced and issues can be resolved going forward for a better customer service. Sincerely hope this feedback is received in the spirit of acceptance of honesty.

Wow, wow and WOW! What an excellent breakfast, glorious, scrumptious and full of flavour. My wife and I avoided the norm and went for the artisan dishes and we’re definitely not disappointed.

Staff pleasant but tables packed so close together practically sitting on the lap of the person next to us. Very noisy so couldn't have a conversation. Dogs permitted which is fine but girl next to us had her's up on the table, surely a health...

Visiting our son in Jesmond he recommended this cafe. We had the full English breakfasts and they were superb. Nice quirky atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Lovely dog friendly cafe, my parents always suggest to come here when they visit with the dog. Great atmosphere and lovely staff! Even give out free pup treats.

Gluten free bread is available meaning that most of the breakfast menu is suitable for coeliacs so it's great to have so many options. I chose the hash bowl with halloumi which was very large and filling.
