Cafe Taj in Gravesham

Quite simply, the best Indian in Gravesend. Me and my mate have been regulars to the Taj for a good 15 years now the food is magnificent, service is always friendly and welcoming with Rob and Jay espiecally always having time for a chat or a helpful tip on whats hot and whats not! Cannot recommend this place enough, looking forward to seeing you guys again soon :)

Roop chanda bole, fresh water fish curry, been eating it here for 20 years, the only curry house I know that does it perfectly.. love it

Ordering for ages and the food is good. However - they state they are halal and I’ve checked before every order to be told it’s a fully halal menu. Yet some of their dishes have red wine. On calling in I was told the meat is halal that doesn’t mean the dishes are!!! Also the duck is not halal and neither are the lamb chops.

I was in Rome and craving an Indian from my man Abdul, i called him up and asked if he could deliver. 2 hours later I saw an old Iraqi fighter jet and thought it was the end of a very lawless life I've had, saw a small drop and it opened a mini parachute, turns out it was my food and Abdul had hooked me up like a legend. 100/10 service.

Been eating here for many many years, always had specials occasion meals here, children and friends had always had there special meals here. BUT NEVER AGAIN! Supported this establishment when the food rating went down to 1 and it did get awful. However slowly improved. One member of staff was so so rude that I actually through my menu down and we all walked out. They have changed their buffet menu but yet nothing updated in the menu's? Waiter kept changing different options throughout the ordering process? Then got really rude. Tried to ask for the owner ROB, who always comes out for a chat but refused on many request. Well sorry Rob, I will never come to your establishment again. You have slowly killed your business off and employing such rude staff will be the icing on the cake!!!

Lovely and atmosphere staff brilliant

Decent enough meal, similar price and taste to other Indian restaurants in Gravesend. The only thing that's disappointing and why only three stars is the Facebook page to me is quite misleading. It advertises a buffet and puts pictures up of a large help yourself style buffet, however in reality it's more of a set menu with a starter, main and rice. There is no help yourself style buffet like the picture would have you believe. Nothing wrong with the food but if you see the picture on Facebook and expect to see a self serve buffet you may be disappointed. I have attached the picture that they use on their page for reference which to me shouldn't be on there. Don't show pictures of a self serve buffet if that's not what you do as it may be what people expect when they arrive.

Really enjoy their style of buffet , it's freshly made and less waste.We defo come back. Hopefully, 2 weeks time.

Came for a works night out, was lovely at the time, wasn't so great the day after. Everyone in our party ended up with diarrhoea! When colleague rang and complained they asked for proof which is laughable. Avoid.

Extremely upset having been a customer for years . Went last night there were 11 of us we all had upset tummys last night and today I could understand if a few of us re rich food and being a curry but 11 of us. I call and spoke to Rob the manager and chef who asked me for proof seriously I asked do you really want us to bring you in a sample .... customer service 0 he just kept saying that nobody else has complained and thst the food is cooked from fresh not doubting that but all 11 of us his answers was bring in the proof and next time he could look at the bill .....umm not good unfortunately so all 11 of will leave a review to warn people . I hate to leave these kind of reviews but I think in light of 11 of us and the response I have shame as previously I have always recomeded this restaurant clearly something was wrong.

One of the best curry houses I have been to! I have been eating here for years. The staff are all amazing, very pleasant and Jay himself gives amazing service. Rob the owner cooks the most amazing food, you can’t go wrong. 100% recommend anyone who loves a curry to come here.

Amazing food! We ordered from the buffet menu, so had chicken chat & prawn puri starters, lamb passander and chicken madras main, sag aloo and mushroo bhaji & mushroom rice for sides and keema naan & roti. I honestly cannot fault anything we have eaten! Every dish was well presented and the portion sizes are so generous. The lamb passander had a wonderful thick and creamy sauce with coconut over the top, and the lamb was cooked to prefection. The chicken madras was flavoursome and had a fabulous kick to it, spicy not overpowering. The staff were so friendly and really attentive. Will we go again..... absolutely!!! and we definitely recommend it. Thank you to all the staff at Cafe Taj 🙂

The staf are very helpful and polite thefood is outstanding I have never had a bad meal . Great atmosphere, all staff are trained to a high standard. I would recommend this restaurant highly for its authey in Indian cuisine.

The food was amazing very flavourful, the service was excellent APART from one member of staff who was incredibly rude to us !!!!!! His attitude was negative from the start. We had booked fir 6 but had a potential 7th coming( the restaurant only had two more tables in use we came in very early) they sat us with two tables together , we ordered our drinks and had been there for 20 mins or so just about to order when this waiter came over and told us in a very negative manner that we would have to move ! It made no sense he wanted to move us from 2 tables in a corner out of the way to 2 tables in the middle of the restaurant?? His manner was awful 😞 It was my parents birthdays and their wedding anniversary so after a discussion where it was obvious that he could not see the sensible reasoning behind staying we moved !!!! A couple ( mother and daughter) left not long after and commented to us that he was rude to them apparently( and I did not hear this myself) told them “ we only speak English in here” !!! Oh if I had heard that comment I would not of left that go !!! Such a shame because as I said the food was delicious and the rest of the service was fantastic

Can't speak highly enough of this restaurant. We have been going here for years and they never disappoint. The staff are very friendly, hospitable and accommodating. The owner is also the chef and the food is the best Indian food in Kent, possibly the best in all of the South East! Highly recommended!

Went to the restaurant with a group of friends, the starters was excellent and fresh as i ordered chicken tikka starter, it was juicy and you can tell it was freshly done, not like other restaurants, the main course I ordered chicken jalfrezi this was perfect on the spicy and the flavour was superb, the service was also excellent and very comforting as well, we all enjoyed it, definitely will be coming back soon

Not too much to say. Pretty good food, reasonably priced and good service. Not sure what more you'd want other than a bit more ambience. Chicken Pathia was outstanding though, so if thats your usual from your local takeaway, be sure to order as a comparison as I thought it was absolutely bang on. If im being critical, onion bhaji a little dry, but compared to some of the greasy versions I've had in the past, will let them off as overall, they got it right. Good night and felt looked after.

Out with family for the evening. Had a lovely meal at Cafe Taj. We hadn't booked but were able to be seated. Warm friendly and attentive staff. Food was delicious. Looking forward to our next visit.

WE have eaten at this restaurant for many years now and always had excellent service and food, making an enjoyable night out. However, there seems to be a change of staff and this resulted in a bad experience. Our food was delivered and the waiter said "enjoy your meal" which indicates all of your food is there. We were missing the Chicken Tikka. So we politely said "is the Chicken Tikka coming". To which he replied that it is on its way and as he walked off he said quite loudly "patience"- how rude!! Especially as he was in the wrong. In addition, there general persona did not display a friendly positive attitude. Bring back the previous staff please, who were brilliant. We don't go out for meals to be dealt with by rude people. Our normal generous tip was downgraded substantially and we will be eating in a different Indian restaurant in future. The waiter in question knows who he is as do his colleagues who heard him - for the sake of the restaurant, changes are needed!

Do not order the Dal Makhani as you will receive Tarka Dal and when questioned the restaurant will tell you they use yellow lentils in their Makhani???? There is a £3 price difference but no difference in ingredients

A very friendly restaurant that always make us feel welcome. The food is excellent and freshly prepared. It was the first place I wanted to eat as we came out of lockdown.

I enjoy a curry and was delighted with a well cooked and tasty meal with some accompanied dishes. The side dishes of rice/nan bread and chutney were well made. Service was professional and took attention to my level of taste.

Gravesend is full of curry houses but Rob Abduls Cafe Taj is one of the best. The food is always amazing and even the hottest curries have flavour as well as heat. Waiters here are always well presented and pleasant.

We always eat here as a family on special occasions. The food is excellent, as is the service. A warm welcome awaits and all of the waiters are attentive to your needs. A great place to eat.

I went with my investment banking colleagues 9pm, 7 of us which was unplanned. The restaurant was busy Butt the staff made us feel welcomed and made a table. The art work on the wall, the relaxing traditional music with a modern twist felt great. The menu had traditional but also modern Indian cuisines to suit all my colleagues taste buds. Which was great that the chief can make any dish personalised for our personal preferences. Food was sizzling while it came to our table, the smell was incredible and the taste was the best taste I have had in along time from an Indian restaurant. The boss even said hello to us just to see if everything was ok.

Went there on a Sundayand whilst the food was OK the service was a bit disorganized, there was a large party already there and it was obvious there was not teally enough staff to cater for the different request by customers, staff were very pleasant, but had a feeling they were not regular waiters. Didn’t really want to go here as last time wasn’t great but friends had booked, they still managed to disappoint again. Service was very slow. Got drinks ordered wrong. Then food took an hour to arrive (even though they were not that busy) most of the food was cold, hot plates were cold, plates were cold, food was cold and not very tasty, naan bread was literally dough where not cooked. Expensive for a very poor meal, felt totally ripped off. Will not make the same mistake again!

I have never been to any Indian restaraunts in Gravesend. So I was apprehensive as we were a big group of over 30, we had the buffet meal . The food was really lovely and freshly made ,the paswari nan was gorgeous enjoyed myself thoroughly.Service was excellent couldn’t fault it .

I've heard many rumours, lately, that the Taj had gone down hill!

We were visiting Gravesend to meet my grandsons who fancied an Indian meal. We booked, but needn’t have bothered. We were the ONLY customers that evening. I took advice and ordered what was meant to be one of the tastiest lamb curries, which was frankly well below average. Infact, we were all seriously unimpressed. We expected much, much more from a restaurant in a town that has a mostly discerning Indian population, but we were seriously disappointed. The bill for three youngish teens and two adults was £97.30 before a tip and what a waste of money. No wine or drinks. Fish & Chips or a takeaway Kebab would’ve been more enjoyable.

Whilst eating our curry a rat across the restaurant. Lucky my husband did not tell me as I would have caused a scene. He just told me let’s leave and pay which we did they told me after. The food was good until that point.

This is the best curry house in town superb food and great staffs. The food cost that little bit more because nice food does not come cheap.

We've eaten at this restaurant before, the food is very good and staff are great. The problem is there's been a hike in prices unfortunately. It's Gravesend not central London! A basic chicken dish starts at £8.50, biryani £11.50, boiled rice £3.50, and starters from around £6. Always thought it was great value but the portions have shrunk substantially too. A few pieces of meat and not much sauce. Very disappointed but hey ho it's not like Gravesend has a shortage of Indian restaurants!

The food was outstanding. (And I am often not a big fan of Indian food -- my husband is, though, so we went). We got pappadoms to start. Then Tandoori Duck (which I'd never heard of -- quite different from Tandoori Chicken), Chicken Biryani, Saag Paneer and (my favorite) Peshwari Nan. All were great.

We got a takeaway of two starters (king prawn purée x2) and then shared a chicken madras and pilau rice. On the menu we have, the price of the takeaway was just short of £20; we were charged £24.95!

The food is good but seriously over priced for a take away this is more than you would pay in most restaurants. Prepare to wait quite a while also for delivery

We ordered a take away from them last evening, at last we have found the best curry place since we relocated 6 years ago.

In the true Indian tradition you are welcomed by friendly staff and have the chance to experience the amazing flavours of the food. Those new to Indian cooking will also get great recommendations.

Haven’t visited for a while, but felt the need to add praise to a great curry, nice atmosphere and as ever spot on service. Slight increase in prices , but to be fair the large bottle of kingfisher cheaper than elsewhere. Swings and roundabouts! Happy days .

Both the owner and the staff here are really friendly and efficient. I havent been here for 5 years or so , but Rob, the owner recignised me , that epitomises what this business is like !The food is second to none. On this visit my crazy partner wanted to try a phaal, which isn't on the menu, all I had to do was ask and it was prepared just for her. The waiter was diligent in advising her where the fire extinguishers were (If you know curries you will get the joke) . Both our meals were amazing and the phaal mind blowing . Despite the heat you could still pick out individual flavours . Top top curry ! Thanks Rob and your team !

My friend has recently bought a new house in Gravesend and as part of the house warming we ordered a takeaway. We obviously had hundreds of choices but upon good recommendations we chose Cafe Taj.

I'm quite a curry fanatic, whereas my boyfriend hasn't eaten curry much, he's now a convert after our meal here! We enjoyed everything we had to eat, it was all very tasty and served quickly.
