The Restaurant itself is beautiful: great location, tucked away on Thistle Street with intimate interiors that are unabashedly styled after a French Brasserie. Brilliant! Service: Before we came to the restaurant we called up to ask if we could move our booking from 7:45 to 6:30. The restaurant said they could and we rearranged our plans accordingly. They then called a couple of hours later and said they could only give us the original time. Normally this would be fine, but we ended up having to choose between going here/a bar down the road we had changed our booking for, so it wasn’t great on the service front, especially given that they charge for no-shows. Once in the restaurant the staff were lovely and friendly, but at points service was slow with some minor things missed. For example, we asked for more bread which never arrived and they didn’t have any of the wine we ordered. Food: Two of us shared a bottle of wine, and had a starter, main and shared desert. The wine menu is great! Lots of choice and great variety, albeit reasonably expensive for what’s on offer (the lowest priced bottles of red start at around £40). The starters were nice: we had Smoked Mackerel and Ham Hock Terrine. The Mackerel was well smoked and came with a salad to garnish it. The Ham Hock was yum, with crusty bread to seal the deal. A solid start in classic brasserie style. For our mains we had the Duck Breast and the Lambs Leg. The duck was perfectly cooked and simply delicious. The Lambs Leg, however, was lacklustre: it sat in lentils which were a bit clumpy and the Lamb seemed slightly overcooked without any great depth of flavour. Mixed reviews on the mains. For desert we shared the cheese board. There were three cheeses and some oat cakes. The goats cheese was lovely, the hard cheese was relatively basic and the soft cheese was not good. It seemed to had hardened and had a plasticky texture/taste to it. A bit disappointing for an Artisan Cheese Board, especially for a French restaurant! The Price: Total: £170 Wine: £42 Starters: £29 Mains: £69 Desert: £15 Service: £15.50 Altogether, we had a positive experience. The restaurants vibe is amazing, but there is room for improvement in the service and in the food. In the way of price, we thought it was a bit over-priced given a couple of the issues noted above. I probably wouldn’t go again, but am happy to have tried it out.

Service and atmosphere was good. The dessert was great! The starter was okay but the main course was so disappointed. I ordered the beef in their menu. The beef was overcooked that I couldn't cut it or even chew it. You can see in the picture how overcooked it is. This dish was 32 pounds, also the taste of the meat was flat, the potatoes tasted like leftovers. I put 3 stars because the dessert was very nice.

The food here is always fantastic. Locally sourced produce, great wines, and a welcoming atmosphere. A special place as each section of the restaurant feels small and quiet - you can chat and feel like you are in a semi-private dining room. We go often for special occasions as the menu changes daily and with the seasons. Our favourite spot for dinner in Edinburgh.

We visited for a birthday/anniversary dinner and we really enjoyed ourselves. Service was good, efficient and friendly, and the food was excellent. The menu is a little limited, but I think that is understandable these days, and the fact that it is changed daily suggests that the chef is making best use of seasonal ingredients. My starter of Cullen skink was not a very French dish, but it did have French cheese added, and it was delicious, so we'll allow that! For my main, I had the duck breast, which was beautifully cooked and came with a delicious buttery sauce. My dessert - pear and almond frangipane tart - was a generous portion, and delicious. As well as the main menu, there is a "prix fixe" "Cafe Classics" option, although there is only one dish option for each course. There is a great selection of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and a good wine list with a number available by the glass. The restaurant is small and very cosy, with a real French bistro feel. We have been occasional visitors here for many years - we couldn't remember how long, but certainly over 20! - and it has never disappointed.

Small, intimate, lovely small spaces over two floors - really enjoy the overall atmosphere of this restaurant and have been lucky enough to enjoy what they have to offer over a good number of years. Always consistently good. Cullen Skink, think and delicious, game terrine really tasty and very generous portion. Sunday roast was chicken which was really moist, would have liked a few more roast potatoes as the ones I had were really tasty. Service excellent

I had a delightful meal here like a 2-3 months ago. The fish was perfectly cooked that had crispy on the outside and tender inside, paired beautifully with fresh greens and a buttery sauce that added just the right richness. The ambiance was classic and cozy, with a charming bistro feel. Bread was served warm to be appetizing. adding a nice touch to the experience. Highly recommended for a relaxed yet refined dining experience! Ps. The food is okay, nothing exceptional and definitely not worth the silly prices they’re charging, but tasty enough. The staff are lovely and very friendly but my word is service sloooooow. It was 50 mins from we sat down before we got our food, and there were only 4 other people in the place at that time so there really is no excuse for that. Nothing about any of our meals was particularly exciting and because of that, the snails pace service and the silly high prices, I wouldn’t hurry back.

Beautiful space, and tasty food but for an average of £ 35 for a main course you are expecting some sort of service. We asked to change our table because we were seated infront of the bar even though the store was empty but the waiter (barely having any customer service skills) refused cause apparently all the tables were booked and selected by their customers. The whole place was empty and as we were leaving a couple walked in,they didnt like their table and the lovely female waitress accommodated them.It took a while for our starters to arrive and overall the service was really bad.I have a feeling that if the female waitress was at the store when we arrived we would have a completely difference experience.

The food was lovely and delicious for my husband. I asked if some of the choices on the menu were ok for pregnant ladies and after going to check with the chef, the waiter was quite vague and not entirely clear about what was safe to eat. I found the game terrine quite dry unfortunately and while the fish was well cooked, the delicious sauce was not well spread around. It took a while to be tended to after the main but the other waiters we had were very pleasant. I had looked forward to dining at Café St Honoré for a while and though my husband was entirely satisfied with the food, I was not always convinced about the full experience.

The starters were good. I think since we were one of the first tables served the terrine was just out of the fridge, and that took away from it a bit. The mains were fantastic. We had the lamb and the beef, both very very good. The desserts were also quite good. The service wasn't bad, but it wasn't exceptionally good either. It felt a little rushed, and there were a lot of little things like not saying what cheeses were on cheese board etc. Being a little harsh on the service because there was a £20 service charge, which I see as a little cheeky. Overall a good meal but maybe not worth the price.

Had a delicious lunch with a girlfriend. The staff were attentive and kind but not obtrusive and the food was, as usual, wonderful. The tenderstem broccoli with whipped crowdie was a lovely starter but the star of the show was the borders roe deer with black pudding. The venison was perfectly cooked and so tender. The buttery mash and gravy/jus were bursting with flavour. Could not recommend Cafe St Honore more highly. Neil and his team never disappoint. Thank you.

It came highly recommended !! It looks French Right down to the neighbours wheels bins overflowing with food waste and rubbish onto the street in front of the restaurant !! The menu reads well but actually the delivery is frankly a rip off Few slices of beef and bits on a plate as starter followed by Pork Belly in a Cassoulet where the dried our tiny pork slice ( not belly ) was at best a reheat and so small and totally chewy and tasteless And the cod was over cooked and dry !! If this is what reviews are raving about then I am glad we cook and eat at home as £250 for three was a total waste of time and money Be warned - this is not a worthwhile visit when better places exist The previous day The Buttery in Glasgow cost less for three and excelled in every way possible Don’t bother with Cafe do St Honore !! We have been going to Cafe St Honore for years, and have always highly recommended this wee gem, but our last two visits, there has been a couple of issues overcooked, and freshness of dishes. These being a very dry over cooked chicken breast, and a piece of Cod, skin like rubber, no pearlescent like, flakey meat, but watery grey colour. This is certainly not the standards of St Honore we remember over the past nearly 20 years, when you used to get a basket of freshly baked bread rolls, not two thin slices. We will be returning, hoping that attention to detail has been reinstated, we don’t want this icon of food paradise to fall in with the now plethora of so called fine dining we now have in Edinburgh, which at most is average.

Booked for a midweek business lunch. I had a £34 pork stew which was reminiscent of a very poor school dinner, although school dinner stews were usually overly seasoned - the chef here seems to have a allergy to basic seasoning. If we weren't hosting business partners we would have certainly complained during the meal. If you're going to charge £34 for a pork stew, it needs to be exceptional, this was beyond poor - pork was dry, veg was 'fine', gravy gloopy and the whole dish was badly seasoned. Terrible food, would never recommend.

An interesting French-inspired but true to local roots menu. Stepping in we were greeted very kindly, exceptional relaxed service, our waiter had stellar recommendations for wine pairing and was accommodating at every step. The food was delicious, it’s our second time at this restaurant and both times we left impressed. The crème brûlée was a standout as they add flambéed apples to the dish, significantly elevating the flavour of the crème which can be frankly heavy at times. The mains were also outstanding; interesting combination of ingredients and creative preparation. Well recommended.

It is cozy & quiet so you can easily carry on conversation & we weren't distracted by any one elses. The staff were very professional and personable. The menu is small with a larger wine list. Our food was well prepared & delicious. We each had the special langostine appetizer, my husband had the steak special and I had the risotto. We had lemon powder with rhubarb and creme brulee for dessert. A pleasant and delicious meal.

Lovely quiet atmosphere intimate without being stuffy and very very efficient and professional staff who are knowledgeable and can advise on choosing and wines etc. It is actually a refreshing change to be able to enjoy all the sensory pleasures and tastes of a 3 course meal and feel nicely fed but not overfed. It was also a pleasant change to find excellent vegetarian options which were not the token afterthought but tasty well thought out dishes which would appeal to non-vegetarians. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. We had the new year set menu (at ca £100 a head) and it was probably on the slightly disappointing side of acceptable: smoked trout wasn’t what half of my party wanted but was probably better than they expected. Parsnip soup, we agreed, was too sweet and a little bland. The beef was OK but lacked depth of flavour or contrast (half my party left half the meat). The dessert was nice but those of us having the tart agreed that the (gluten-free option) melting pot looked nicer. £150/head all-in was just about acceptable because it was new year but I’ve often eaten much better food in Edinburgh for a lot less. Maybe, if I’m charitable, it was the set menu that let it down.

Thoroughly excellent food on our repeat visit. Pricey, yes, but absolutely worth it. I had the terrine to start and then roast turkey. Main course was absolutely fantastic, pretty much a perfect roast. Turkey was so tender, and they gave me a jug of extra gravy to drown myself in. Terrine was good, but lost a couple of points for me. First, I found buckshot in it (at least you know it's real wild game!) which was honestly fine, but slightly better QC would be advised. Aside from that, overall the dish felt a little heavy. There wasn't quite enough of the fig running through it to counterpoint the meat, and the pickled red cabbage wasn't quite doing it for me. Wife had the pumpkin soup, which was lovely and creamy. For mains, she had slow cooked beef shin on mash with kale. It was also very tasty, can't say too much as I was only allowed one bite ;) Waiting staff were fantastically on point as well, and they always offer to call a taxi at the end of the meal which is a nice touch.

Lived in Edinburgh for 15 years, but strangely only visited here a few times. My fault not theirs as this is undoubtedly one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh. As the name suggest a French style, but effortless it in how it goes about it I.e it doesn’t need to try hard to get it right!. Think that little brasserie you discover in a Paris side street which is homely, with excellent food and you while a way the hours just having a really great time. This is the same experience. While the menu is small it always changes and is excellent. The service is professional but not over bearing and always very friendly. When we were visiting Edinburgh in 2022 we visited Cafe St Honoré and we were so delighted with the restaurant that we went back two days later, with friends, so we actually visited twice in three days… so when we knew we were visiting Edinburgh again this year, for my wife’s birthday, we immediately booked a table at Cafe St Honoré. There was little choice from the main menu that appealed so we went for the set ‘classic’ menu. We were very hungry and it seemed a very very long time to order. Bread arrived, two small-ish pieces, plus some gluten free bread. Due to having to wait quite a while to order our food we asked if there was more bread available please… and such then appeared on the bill as an extra cost!! The soup was nice. The fish main was nice but not memorable. I had emailed the restaurant several times and also telephoned the restaurant in advance to organise a pudding as it was my wife’s birthday and covertly spoke to the waitress on the evening itself. Obviously I’d fully expect this to be chargeable. I also obviously steered my wife away from ordering a pudding as I knew the restaurant was going to present a surprise one to her, with birthday wishes………what she got was one scoop of sorbet with a candle coming out of it. We weren’t charged for this but my expectation was that it would be more (and chargeable). Hummmm, not exactly what was pre-discussed and almost certainly a disappointment. The above is the complete opposite of another well known restaurant in Edinburgh I have experience of, even without any particular prior communication. Like other recent reviews, this restaurant seems to have lost its way and is not what it once was, very very sadly.

The four of us were excited to eat here - the external and internal decor is great and sets the stage for the enjoyment of some great French Bistro food. The menu was so small we struggled to pick something and frankly we expected to see a broader range of dishes on offer. Nothing wrong with small menus but I think this was simply too small an offering from an establishment offering food at this price point. The food was well cooked but the portions were very small . The service was ok, though adding on a 10 percent service charge without any customer interaction is I think unreasonable. Unfortunately nothing compelling us to return - we left disappointed.

Small portions and very pricey. Particularly egregious was the cheese selection, three tiny slices for £15. However, the little we did get was beautifully cooked and the service was friendly and attentive.

I ate at this beautiful restaurant in April. I was visiting on a trip with some family from Edmonton Canada. I’m a chef and baker back home and I just caught myself thinking about this meal yet again - dining done right.

Lovely French style bistro very authentic, atmosphere laid back. Brilliant service from the lovely girls, food delicious only a small menu not a lot of choice but I find that an advantage when the food is so well prepared, good wine list and not so overpriced. We will return.

We ordered each a £40 steak which was presented to us as their special of the day. The steak was tough and chewy, one of the worst we have eaten in a restaurant in years. Overpriced pub food to say the least. I would think twice before trusting online reviews in the future as this restaurant was highly recommended online.

I've been wanting to eat here for some time, but was disappointed by the experience. The food was OK but not great and its expensive when you take into account that they add a 10% service charge...I had the cafe classics very average and the fish I ordered was swimming in butter (but not in a good way) The restaurant is a bit tired, and the portion sizes lack generosity, the presentation uninspiring. There are other restaurants for a similar price that deliver a much better product. So will go there next time I'm afraid.

For £16 I would have hoped that the starter of scallops would have consisted of more than two rather small examples of the shellfish, and three stems of broccoli. Plus, the sauce completely disguised any taste of scallop. A main couse of Hake, at £30, was delicious, and we followed that by, what we thought was, an overpriced cheeseboard, considering what was served. £15 for a half carafe of house wine was, again, on the wrong side of good value. Can't see us hurrying back.

Delicious food. Excellent service. Great atmosphere. W will go back again soon. Loved it! Maybe a bit expensive but it’s a quality restaurant in Edinburgh in summer.

All beautifully set out with white tablecloths and starched napkins The food was reasonable but vastly overpriced for what we had so we were disappointed.

We were fortunate to hear of this restaurant and grabbed a reservation before we arrived in Edinburgh, The chef has created some wonderful starters and mains. Flavors were subtle yet matched, accompanied by outstanding rye and wheat breads. Our only complaint was the waiter having...

Lovely setting but hugely disappointing food and very poor value for money. Seems to be living on its reputation from when it was a 'proper' French restaurant. Three choices (plus a very expensive main special) for each course £15/30 for staters/ mains. Just very ordinary food and certainly not good enough at those prices.

Highly recommend! We used the private room to celebrate a birthday. Booking was easy, even from the States. Some of our party have food allergies, which were taken seriously enough that special menus were printed. Importantly, the food was spectacular. The service was the right level of helpful without being intrusive, and friendly even when some of our group wanted to have extended conversations about local politics 😕 The only downside was that, like everywhere in Scotland, the room was stuffy. No, I do not need A/C, but moving air would have been nice.

Delicious French food with fresh Scottish ingredients. Small menu, but something for everyone: for both starters and mains, there was a meat, fish and vegetarian choice. Service was friendly and inviting. Tucked away on a little street in New Town, away from the throngs. Enjoy!

Went for a quiet dinner our last night in Edinburgh. I had a ribeye and chips and the asparagus appetizer with a mushroom sauce. Sooo good! Lovely atmosphere, good wine list (served at the proper temperature!). I did feel a bit like I was in Paris! I would go back often if I was able.

To be honest, it just isn't worth the price. I imagine the menu changes from time to time, but when I went the options were not good. Furthermore, the food lacked salt.

Amazing place if you are in hurry or need a little brake on your adventure in Edinburgh. The people working here are super friendly and the prices are good. They have soup of the day if you need something warm and great selection of tasty pies (chicken and mushroom is my favorite). Totaly worth visit at least once!

Went as part of a work-event at Christmas. The hall was stunning, big fireplaces and stunning chandeliers. The food was very very good and a fair portion. Service was prompt and polite and extra considerate for our colleague who can't have peanuts, reassuring him that they checked his meal each time. Food was served at a lovely temperature. I'd love to visit this place as a typical patron. Also, it's a treat to be so far up the Royal Mile as late as we were. Even though it was Christmas time, the street was fairly quiet and Edinburgh old-town looks lovely (ignoring the road works!)
