Cafe Orient in Oxford

This is SUCH a good place, my favourite of all the Asian places on the Cowley Road. It’s super tasty, fresh ingredients. I really recommend the aubergine pot (mouthwatering), the dry green beans oh my god, any the handmade noodles are like nothing else, they are so so so good. If you just order those things you will have an amazing meal, plenty for two big eaters or three smaller eaters.

Every aspect of this restaurant is phenomenal, right down to the little things that raise it above the majority of restaurants here in the U.K (I'm looking at you, Umbrella basket by the door!) The food itself is sublime and you can get a good taste of oriental- namely Chinese- cuisine, with possibly the broadest selection of dishes I've actually seen in an eatery. I saw a good selection of dishes strewn across for the various diners we passed on the way in (and out) indicating that yes- anything on that menu is likely available. The vegetable dishes were especially good with excellent portion sizes- unlike most places that'll give you a few leaves and call it a portion. The drinks, too, are fantastic. If you order tea you'll get real tea- not a bag of oxidised leaves branded by Twinings. If you order a Boba, you'll get tapioca pearls- not alginate-coated lumps of potato starch. In terms of service, the waiters are attentive. They'll notice if you need extra tissues, and they don't force themselves on you to question whether you're having a good time, or whether the food is good (even if a waiter did that, would you complain? Likely not, and the type of person who would would not need the waiter to ask first.) Overall, very professional. This last comment is for anyone with urological issues: the bathrooms are spotless and regularly cleaned, you won't have to worry about using the seat here- and there's real soap, too, not that foamy froth that passes as soap.

Super experience here they accommodated our small group with a large appetite last minute and served some delicious Chinese food. The price point is really good value for authentic and tasty cuisine you just can’t cook at home. We ordered about 8 dishes and the bill came to around £70. I recommend this place to anyone looking to try some more authentic food! Get the aubergines and the roast duck! Wow 🤩 thank you will definitely be coming back soon

In around 4:30pm, quiet business hours, food came out very fast, as Dongbei origin, I reckon the beans with pork ribs was just cooked to homecraft taste. Highly recommend as one person eat alone, order a bowl of soup to complete the treatment. Guaranteed a wholeful DongBei culinary experience.

I very pleasantly surprised by this unassuming restaurant that my friend took me to this weekend. I love places like this. So many different, authentic dishes on the menu, and each dish was a total delight. They were very accommodating of our fairly large group and the service was friendly. I have already recommended this little spot to several friends, and i will definitely be returning the next time I'm in Oxford!

Having dined here on numerous occasions, I can confidently say that the consistency in the quality of their food is unmatched. Not only are the dishes delectable, but the pricing is also incredibly reasonable compared to other Chinese eateries. A special shoutout to their Kou Shui Chicken – a tantalising blend of flavours with a kick of spice that has become our go-to dish. Highly recommended for anyone seeking authentic Chinese flavors without breaking the bank!

Gotten takeout from here before but this was my first time eating in and it was yummmm. Big menu but I did miss the saucy eggplant dish I usually get (maybe I just missed it?) when I go for Chinese. Went out of my comfort zone with some spicy szechuan dishes (steamed chicken and jellyfish salad) but they weren’t as spicy as I thought they’d be. Had gro bao roa at a diff place the other day and this was better 🤫

I went here with a group of friends, most of us were vegetarian. The food was amazing, I've never tasted anything like this in my life, one of the best meals I ever had for sure! And so affordable! The people were also very nice and kind, and the service was really fast.

The worst food I have ever eaten. We ordered dileroo , it turned up 90 minutes late and cold. We were so hungry by the time it arrived. We struggle some of the food the rest ended up in the bin.The driver was told that the food wasn’t ready ready so he left to do deliveries and came back for our food which had been sitting for who knows how long .

This place on the Cowley Road is great for eating in and takeaways. I had lunch there today - great food, friendly service, good vibe, and very reasonably priced. The sweet and sour pork with honey is absolutely delicious - thin slices of pork in a brittle deep fried batter, with a gorgeous honey sauce and little strings of ginger, carrot and maybe spring onions. The king prawns with celery and a creamy sauce was fabulous too - succulent battered king prawns, with slivers of celery, carrot and cucumber (?) in a creamy sauce. Both these dishes are very unusual to see on a Chinese restaurant menu, and both are really special. Ingredients are fresh fresh, and the cooking is spot on. Lovely egg fried rice to accompany. A very good experience. Paid with a credit card no problem, and no Covid restrictions now.

香辣虾仁 Spicy King Prawns Special with Peanuts Chili We paid for this dish but instead got this dish below. We think this is chicken, but certainly NOT King Prawn. It looked so uninviting. My husband refused to touch it as he does not know what it is. 3. 蒜蓉菠菜 Chinese Spinach in Garlic Sauce This dish was just tasteless, grainy and had no Garlic sauce at all. 酸辣粉 Szechuan Hot & Sour Vermicelli Soup Special with Tofu Sheets, Spinach, Bean Sprouts & Peanuts When I asked where was the soup my husband had ordered, I was told that he did not order any soup. You can see from the menu that it says soup and he ordered this dish. There was no soup at all. And, it was not even tasty. There were no bean sprouts nor spinach. A few strands of Tofu sheets and peanuts. Terribly unimpressive dish! 炒牛河 Beef Fried Ho Fun with bean sprouts & onion Special There are no pictures for this dish in the website That is what we received. Tasteless and unimpressive. 香辣猪手 Spicy Pork Trotters Special with onion & Peanuts Burnt, very hard to eat and so uninviting and tasteless. We did call immediately, but the guy we spoke to, did not speak nor understand English. He told us that it was prawn that we have and you can see that it is not and that we did order soup as per their menu and our order. So, very disappointing as we drove all the way from Reading to get this take away to celebrate Chinese New Year. It is a pity as it is our second time visiting this restaurant. The first time, the food was just excellent. But, being Chinese New Year, we wanted something typically Chinese and decided to drive all the way to Oxford. How disappointing as two of the dishes were not what we ordered and secondly, none of them were tasty, The ones that I did not complain about, were just okay. So very disappointing.

Hands down best Chinese / Szechuan food in Oxford. Lots of veggie options, and our favourite is the stewed aubergine. And lovely staff! I accidentally left a sweater here after our amazing meal and when I came to pick it up the next day, the staff had carefully wrapped it up.

Second visit here and we weren’t disappointed. Lots of choice and food was really good. Staff friendly. Reasonable prices. Portion sizes were really generous. Not many decent Chinese restaurants in the area but this is a real gem. Overall excellent experience - we will be back.

Nearly all the recent reviews were very positive and so we decided to give it a try. Glad that we booked as it was a very busy Saturday evening and people were being turned away. The service was excellent and the food very good. The only slightly negative thing was the fish in the fish tank. The tank was quite small and the fish seemed unhappy.

On the spur of the moment my wife and I popped in for lunch. It was a Monday around 1pm - and only a couple of tables were occupied (4 or 5 were free). We thought we had over-ordered - but everything was so delicious we realised we had not. Service excellent and food very good and tasty. We were served quickly too.

We had vegetarian gluten free tofu and some potato aubergine sauce main with rice. Tasty and spicy. Will visit again. Must go if your are coeliac and need gluten-free food.

Be aware that when it says it spicy it is spicy not a joke but still very delicious! Service was also very professional and friendly. They only accept cash.

I have eaten here now, in the restaurant and with takeaways, maybe six times. And this is the real deal. Better than I have found elsewhere in the country, for serious, Sichuan cooking (and other regions too, but not with an overly huge menu). Served by a team of hard-working, dedicated women, with smiles - if you give them one. Taste, freshness, deliciousness. Highly recommended.

Para empezar, también tuvimos un plato de judías verdes con carne de cerdo picada y un poco de carne de cerdo frita. Ambos fueron excelentes, un poco picantes, ¡pero ciertamente no demasiado! Absolutamente golpear.El servicio fue rápido, amable, y noté que muchos clientes eran chinos u orientales, lo que era un buen augurio para la calidad y autenticidad del establecimiento. ¡Visité este café con grandes amigos "foody" que vinieron a Oxford la noche antes de un viaje a Milán! De regreso el domingo por la noche y lo visité nuevamente antes de dirigirnos al Norte, ¡fue tan bueno! Chisporrotear berenjena y cerdo especial fue sorprendentemente bueno. El servicio y la hospitalidad fueron excelentes y muy amables. Realmente debería mantener este lugar en secreto para que siempre podamos conseguir una mesa, pero merecen ser reconocidos. This is a buzzing place serving a wide variety of dishes to suit most folk and even those averse to spice.....go but not so often that I can’t get a table

Been here loads of times. So much excellent food on the menu. Bit more expensive and a bit more authentic (pigs ears anyone?) than other Chinese restaurants on Cowley Rd, but certainly the best. Go nuts. No discount on takeaway, which is a shame.

Have only ever been once, but the traditional homemade noodles (in Szechuan sauce) were some of the best I have tried. Portion size could have been bigger, but ultimately the dish is good value for the quality alone. Will be returning!

No parece mucho desde el exterior, pero ¡este lugar es un hallazgo! ! Amplio menú con grandes porciones a precios muy razonables. Mi madre tenía un plato especial de chef que era increíble y tienes que probar los fideos caseros! Entré en camino a la academia O 2 para comer algo con un par de personas más. Extraña distribución de un edificio, pero han aprovechado al máximo el espacio disponible para incluir tantas cubiertas como sea posible sin que se vea abarrotado. La comida nos sorprendió a todos, probablemente el mejor chino que he tenido. El servicio fue rápido y eficiente y la comida abundante, no grasa y bien presentada. El precio es un poco más de lo que normalmente pagaría por similar, pero la calidad y la cantidad compensada por esto. Volvería sin dudarlo.

I had fantastic hand-made sichuan noodles - spicy and delicious - and wonderful fried green beans, which were addictive. Am definitely going to go back! Would recommend highly!!

Dined here with my daughter and we found the food to be excellent. It isn't much to look at from the outside but never "judge a book by the cover!" We read the reviews and decided to give it a go. We had spare ribs and dumplings as starters. For mains we had shredded pork in spicy sauce and shredded pork in soy bean sauce with tofu sheets and vegetables. Everything we ate was excellent, really tasty and flavoursome. The cost for two two course lunches and a couple of beers was under £40. The waitress was nice and friendly. All in all, a really nice meal and excellent value. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The rest of the menu looked and sounded really good. I would definitely go back and try something else.

Un fantástico pequeño lugar apartado con maravillosa comida china en Cowley Road. Parece pequeño cuando entras y pensé que era bastante pequeña la primera vez que cené aquí con mi familia, pero cada vez que vengo, descubro que el lugar es bastante grande con muchas habitaciones en la parte de atrás.

Cafe Orient is a Chinese restaurant specialising mostly in Sichuan food. They have basically all the classic Sichuan dishes there. Flavours are super strong and authentic and incredibly delicious. It's also an unbelievably good price for how good the food is. I've eaten at quite a few of the Chinese restaurants in Oxford over the years and this is way better than the other options for Sichuan food, including My Sichuan at Gloucester Green. The service is also pretty good for a Chinese restaurant, the place is clean, the front room has clearly been recently decorated and the menus refurbished (and some attempt has been made to provide English descriptions). The back rooms do look a bit like someone's house that has been turned into a makeshift restaurant, but does it really matter when the food is good and the prices are low?

Vimos el cartel de "fideos caseros" y decidimos intentarlo. Todo lo que pedimos estaba muy sabroso (pero sería mejor un poco más picante). Tiendo a juzgar los lugares de Sichuan en su mapo doufu, y este era delicioso. Los fideos planos hechos a mano fueron fantásticos! Volveremos por más! Aunque las porciones son pequeñas, todavía estábamos un poco hambrientos después pero afortunadamente hay un gran helado al otro lado de la calle.

Love their food a lot, taste good, cheap and the quality maintains well. Been there a few times and it is always good. Love their chicken and fish dishes a lot. Definitely worth going, they do some nice spicy dishes too! 🙂🙂

Second visit and this time we phoned ahead and ordered the crayfish (crawfish). Wonderful experience, very messy, we were given thin plastic gloves. Fun to get the meat out and well worthwhile. Very tasty mainly chili sauce. Service was great. Will be back again. Thanks

Los auténticos platos del norte de China, son casi un 99% a los que puedes conseguir en China, con una gran variedad de fideos hechos a mano (trigo o fécula de patata, etc. Se recomienda). Fuimos a cenar como uno de nuestros amigos sugirieron que el restaurante tiene la comida china más auténtica y bebidas. La comida llegó bastante rápido (antes de bebidas) y todos fueron tan sabrosa, especialmente la de cerdo al vapor con ajo y me encantó el té del vientre leche! Ten cuidado si no eres bueno para comer la comida picante, como la mayoría de las cosas aquí son picantes. Pide a la camarera para ajustar la condimentos y todo irá bien. También puede pedir arroz, va bien con la comida y te llena. Muy buen precio como pedimos 7 platos con arroz y bebidas y pagamos £11. 00 cada uno. Sin duda volveremos x

When you see a Chinese restaurant in the UK that serves tripe and hand made noodles, you know you’ve got an authentic place which caters for more than just the standard UK palate. Delicious salt and chilli tofu with a crispy outside, excellent prawn toast and some of the tastiest proper noodle soups I’ve had. An excellent little no nonsense place with an informal dining layout, free Wi-fi and USB power sockets. Helpful pictographic menu that genuinely reflects the dishes available. You’ll definitely want to come back here. Just don’t forget your cash!

Picked this place because i wanted to go somewhere i didn't go before, because new year is close.

Visited Cafe Orient with 3 friends and had really nice time. Decor is a little cheap, but the service was good and friendly. We ordered a mixture of dishes all of which were really tasty. I especially enjoyed the deep fried squid, green beans with minced pork, and chicken with black beans in noodles. There was plenty of food for all four of us, and including 4 large beers came to less than £70 (not including tip). Great value!

Finally managed to find a meal time. Almost empty (early afternoon, mid-week). Very friendly waitress, full of helpful advice on Szechuan menu. The dried chilli prawns was excellent : full of flavour (and yes, spice). I look forward to returning to try lamb, and to meet more of the staff. All tasty and very promising. The prawns, egg fried rice, jasmine tea was £13, very good value.

We went immediately before a theatre trip, basically choosing it because it looked okay from the outside. We were quickly shown to a table. Service thereafter seemed to be a case of catching the waiters eye, even in terms of asking for some water.

The food was nice. Nothing amazing but nothing disappointing either. The glasses were really greasy-looking though. I had to tell my self ' it's not dirty it's just old' to be able to have it. I wonder how they managed to get the number 5 rating on their hygiene. They don't accept card payments either. Luckily there are cashpoints opposite the road.

Where do I start really. Very greasy food I've ordered shechuan chicken while my friend got some curry dish when food come out it was drenched in fat I've tried and I just couldn't make myself eat when I questioned the waitress was very blunt, rude and not helpful what so ever I eventually persuaded her to take food back but it just looked as if they just try to drain the fat off when she returned I just wanted to leave couldn't stand being there for any longer, we paid for our dishes full price which I think it was a joke there was no compassion what so ever I will really avoid this place unless you fancy drinking pints of oil

The food we had ordered was disappointing, it was the handmade noodles which was nice but then covered with chicken bones ! I mean I can see neck bones in it. It ruined the whole meal. The portion is very small so came out still starving! been there twice now and definitely NOT COMING BACK +

Ask the chef (who is also the owner),Mr Zhang, to point out dishes, in the menu, from his hometown in the North Eastern Region of China. You will not be disappointed, especially if you are daring to try something new. We had the crab, it was fresh, and the taste can only come from a very hot fired up wok - most delicious and not over priced. The chef/owner gives his best effort; a small wonderful, no frills eatry that cares about good food. However ,make sure you ask for less chilli if you cannot take spicy food. The resturant deserves a visit !

After a long, rainy day I ducked into Cafe Orient to get a cheap hot meal to takeaway. I was not disappointed! I got the black pepper beef with rice for £6 and within literal minutes, I was already on my way home with food in hand. It tasted just like home. Will be returning!

We visit Cafe Orient regularly as it offers such a refreshing alternative to many Anglo-Chinese restaurants. I recently had lunch here and was rather challenged by the hotpot I chose - huge, delicious, but extremely spicy (which I regretted afterwards). On other occasions the beef with aubergines was a particular highlight. More familiar dishes are available, so this place caters for the adventurous and cautious alike.

Forget that diluted western take on an incredible food culture this place serves up the real deal. The salt squid was delightful and the roast duck was the best Chinese duck I have ever eaten. I had one piece and when I went for another my wife had eaten it all. Guess we will have to return. Great service too and atmosphere.

Love this place. You must try the spicy and fragrant pork and the sweet potato starchy noodles. Service is fast, portions large and there are so many exciting new things to try on the menu I keep returning, and have not been disappointed.

My friends and I used to go here quite often for Asian food in Cowley Rd. Certainly the best one in Cowley, in my opinion.I feel that even though the options aren't necessarily as extensive as, say, Zheng or Opium Den, it is more diverse. And the price list I must say is quite reasonable. Service consistently good, and portion is of very good value.Honestly the only reason I gave 4/5 is just because they only accept cash (at least the last time I went there it was like that), whereas I mostly, if not exclusively pay by card. At least there's a cash machine just across the road, so that's taken care of. But for the same reason, because I can be too lazy to carry cash unless it's to tip hotel/restaurant staff, I rarely have Cafe Orient on my priority list now.

This restaurant's food is amazing! The pork is so delicious! It's the best Chinese food I ever tried! The restaurant food colour and lustre is gorgeous, moderate taste!Very suitable for all kinds of people！They have a rich and colorful cooking, also have a taste of cold dishes, their food is very fresh, healthy, nutritious! The price of the restaurant is also very cheap, is really a very cost-effective!And I saw the restaurant and hot pot!This is really a did not think of! I hope my friends can go to the restaurant to taste!You will not be disappointed! This is the most authentic Chinese restaurant I tried in Oxford!

This place is not a patch on the Opium Den as some other reviews have suggested, and I didn't find it particularly cheap either. The food was ok, I'd eat there again but wouldn't be in a rush to go.

I came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. This place serves a wide range of authentic, non-westernised Chinese food, and the prices are very competitive.I tried hot and sour soup to start, which was a very generous portion at £2.50, and with plenty of chicken and prawns. It was not hugely to my taste but I guess when you try new things there will always be some things you like and some you don't.For main I had pork intestines with spicy aromatic sauce. I have never had pork intestine before (aside from in sausages no doubt...) so I wasn't sure what to expect - turns out they were good! Texture rather like squid but with a nice, meaty taste and the sauce was a good accompaniment.Prices are very, very competitive especially considering the quality of the food. The menus rather let the place down with lots of handwritten corrections and hand written prices - perhaps it is time to order some new ones? Just for info - they accept cash payment only.
