Walked there from Salcombe which took about 30 mins from where the ferry drops you off uphill. The views are amazing and had a drink outside first. We all had the beef roast which was perfect, starters of pork croquettes which were also amazing and shared a dessert of the magnum ice cream - mind blowing. The service from the delightful Dylan was spot on. This is our second visit and although much quieter inside than when we went in Feb 23 it was a wonderful experience.

After our beautiful walk to Gara beach with our dogs we decided to have lunch at the hotel. The terrace was full and buzzing but straight away they got us a table with the most stunning views. Pizzas were delicious, ask for the “picante” if you like a bit of spice. Also try the elderflower spritz, gorgeous. The service was amazing, all so friendly and attentive. Can’t recommend Gara enough!

Ate in the “Kitchen” restaurant, it was a fantastic experience. We had a kind of tapas mix or dishes all at once and my boys, 9 and 12 loved it. Helped that the sun was shining through the conservatory windows. Excellent staff and service. We will be back!

the view is amazing, they refused to serve food on the terrace, we had a table inside, and they refused to box up the food we ordered so i could eat it outside on the amazing terrace. i then ordered cocktails on the terrace and they refused to make a pinocolada as it wasn't on the till. so i waited 20 minutes watching an absolute shambles, it took 3 people to process each order. Shambles!

My wife and I upgraded to the tasting menu, it was absolutely superb! All 8 dishes were individual and delicious, we’ve eaten in numerous restaurants and hotels in Devon over the years and I have to say this was right up there with the best, if not THE best! The freshly baked bread, baba ghanoush, scallops, lobster, sirloin steak and tea and chocolate dessert, all fantastic. Naomi was our waitress, everything was great.

We booked to have lunch in the Kitchen restaurant after a walk from the Salcombe ferry. It is out the back without a view and seemed a bit dead and stuffy so went to the balcony. You can only have pizza on the balcony, not any of the Kitchen restaurant menu. Not sure why this is like this as it wasn't too busy. Waited for quite some time at the bar window to order, bar person missed 1/3 pizzas but got there in the end. Pizza took ages to arrive and then was missing 1/3, waitress didn't give any explanation as to why and it arrived 15min later - suspect it was forgotten despite having been paid for. All pizzas extremely cheesey. Overall, nice view, average to a bit above food with poor service. Prob should have just taken a packed lunch.....

We stopped at Gara mid walk for morning coffee. Seating was only available outside. We ordered two flat whites, a diet Coke, a lime soda, and two chocolate brownies. The latter were pretty mediocre, sweet tasting but not much else. What was not mediocre was the bill, £31 for such a very modest order, the coffee alone was £4.50 a cup! It's shame Gara Rock, we are local and have enjoyed your hospitality many times in past but, with prices like these, we won't be coming back . . .

All we wanted was an ice cream. Picture the situation… it was mid afternoon in early November, we popped in while on a walk. Perhaps 2 tables occupied. 2 people on reception told us to go to the restaurant. Man there (manager?) said yes, we do tubs, ‘take a seat’, so we did. Just as we turned away to go and sit down, another couple approached the manager, and he started chatting to them. And chatted. And chatted… at least 2 waitresses walked past him to come towards the tables, but he made no attempt to ask them to serve us, and no attempt to serve us. After 10 minutes we left. No reaction from the reception staff who knew what we wanted and in whose sight line we’d been throughout. All we wanted was a tub of ice cream each. What was it about that manager that meant he wouldn’t/couldn’t take our order? All it needed at the first encounter was one further question - ‘what flavour?’. But no. He chose to speak / chat / laugh with the other couple. We were left waiting and wondering what made us less worthy of his time and attention and custom. The more I think about it the worse it gets. I was left with a fraction of the feelings people must get when suffering humiliation due to the colour of their skin or their sexuality or the way they dress… Over reacting? Yes, probably. It was only an ice cream. Avoid is my suggestion.

We booked a week ahead , not like us to be so organised, for a Friday bbq lunch as this was the only option available . But having said that we were looking forward to the bbq and to enjoy the amazing views . We had confirmation of our booking and a reminder but when we turned up no bbq , it had been cancelled and we hadn’t been informed. Very disappointed. We were offered a table inside but the menu wasn’t what we hoped for . We decided on the lunch nibbles /tapas style . Very overpriced for what we got . Small plate of Iberico ham 19.00. We should have left but our bottle of Prosecco had arrived . Katie was very helpful and took the bottle of Prosecco off the bill but it was still around 100 for nibbles . Very disappointed , happy to pay for a lovley meal don’t like being ripped off. We certainly won’t be back .

The food is amazing and the views from restaurant are stunning. Only spoilt by staff pointedly returning to the table to collect single items after having previously removed finished plates at the end of meal. Felt that we were been rushed out yet had not finished drinks. Not what one would expect and felt this rude behaviour warranted the 4 stars rather than the 5 that the chef should have deserved.

We'd booked a table for my birthday lunch but we arrived a few minutes early as the walk from the ferry had taken us less time than anticipated. The welcome we received was luke warm to say the least, we were made to feel like we were a nuisance. We then waited approx 15 minutes (10 minutes after our booked time) in the foyer area and during that time none of the staff suggested we could order a drink. When we got to our table the view was amazing as always and the waitress was very friendly. The food was very good but the draught cider was not available (this happened on our previous visit too) so we were served room temperature cider from bottles.

I had another wonderful weekend in the charming coastal town of Salcombe, enjoying its diverse range of outdoor activities. One of the highlights being a delightful walk along the coastline, where the breathtaking views from the cliff tops and the crashing waves of the sea were simply spectacular. Along the way, we planned to stop at Gara Rock, which is not only a great spot for a drink or lunch but also doubles as a hotel. However, upon reaching Gara Rock and eagerly anticipating a drink indoors, we encountered some resistance. They seemed hesitant about allowing us to have a drink inside and instead directed us to their food truck outside. While it would have been a pleasant experience on a sunny day, I was less than impressed as it was raining and there were no apparent sheltered areas. Perhaps the addition of table umbrellas would be a welcome improvement. I found it peculiar that they seemed to selectively decide who could stay inside and who had to be outdoors unless one opted for a fine dining lunch. This approach struck me as odd, especially considering it is a well-known stop along the coastal walk. While I understand they may have a particular style they wish to maintain, it seems unusual in a time when every customer matters. Fortunately, the saving grace of this experience was Martinez (if I recall the name/spell correctly). Despite the chilly weather outside, Martinez went above and beyond to provide outstanding hospitality services. He was accommodating and delivered excellent service, truly representing the establishment in the best possible way, a true credit!

My partner and I went here today for lunch to celebrate an anniversary. We have been before. It is not cheap but is good. I looked at the sample menu online before going. On arrival we noticed a homemade Orange gin on the specials board which we tried to order, only to be told they didn’t have it. Why was it left on a tear off specials board? It’s just sloppy management and doesn’t inspire you with confidence. After being given the menu we were told that on Saturday only a ‘sharing’ grill menu was available. Nowhere on Gara’s website does it say that this is the only menu available on a Saturday. My partner does not eat meat, and I am not a big fan of fish, so how do we share? To compromise we ordered the fish stew. Admittedly this contained a small piece of lobster each, monkfish tail, prawns and plenty of mussels. It was enough for two with something else. The price? £125! One hundred and twenty five pounds! I appreciate prices have increased but this is just taking the mickey. We were advised to order some sourdough bread ‘to soak up the juices’. You would assume that at £125 a basket of bread would be included but no, £6 for 3 small (including an end) pieces of bread for 2 people! You couldn’t have soaked up a small spillage on the table with that. We asked for some more and a further 3 slices were brought to the table. You would assume that this would have been included but no, a further £6 on the bill. £6 for a portion of fries too. At the end we were asked if we wanted a dessert or coffee. We declined as it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. £184 for a fish stew, bread and a drink each. We have eaten at several Michelin restaurants and this place is just a rip off. The week before we had a set lunch at the Mason’s Arms (Michelin) and drinks for far less. Unfortunately we’ll not return. Charging those prices just pushes people away. Don’t bother!

Nice restaurant albeit pricey, lovely views towards the sea. Food and service excellent, however on top of high prices we were slapped with an unexpected additional 12.5% service fee, normally only charged for large parties.

No booking so arrived around 12:30 to try and get in for lunch with 5 others. Outside seating was already full as it was such a beautiful sunny Sept day. However put our name down on the waiting list for a table and retired to the cliff top seating opposite for a relaxing drink from the Gara Van opposite the hotel entrance, they come and grab you once it’s ready. Food was excellent, we went for the BBQ meat sharing platter which more than enough for 2. Succulent ribs, Toulouse Sausage, Piri chicken and Beef Kebabs all served with a lovely portion of new pots and ratatouille. Service was great and a lovely chatty member of staff looked after us very well. Would recommend for the views alone.

Could not have been more disappointed!Very limited menu - 3 platters on offer to share one meat, one fish, one vegetarian- we asked to have half the vegetarian platter and half the meat as I am a vegetarian and my partner loves meat - we said we were willing to pay the full price of the meat platter. The poor waitress was really embarrassed when she came back to say the chefs wouldn’t do it. How difficult can it be when you are serving such a limited menu. This was a real case of a place that doesn’t understand they are there to serve the customer - an arrogant attitude that left a very sour taste. As we couldn’t share a platter we ordered a burger with extra fries, pepper, salad and hallumi- £5 for 2 pieces of rubbery cheese, no dressing no presentation just stuck on a plate. We had such high hopes - great view yes but that is as good as it gets.

Having planned a lovely coastal walk to be followed by a scrumptious cream tea at the Gara Rock hotel like I had last year- I was bitterly disappointed. All staff were extremely polite but being told I could only sit inside to eat off the lunch menu was a huge disappointment. I was told I could get a cream tea from the caravan outside. Knowing the famous Gara rock wasps could be around I reluctantly sat down - only to see a family inundated with wasps- a cream tea - well more like a take away - tea in a cardboard cup - no teapot- scones in a cardboard tray and a mini pot of cream a jar of jam. I watched the family struggle - and decided to leave- a cream tea is a ritual with proper cups and plates and real knives for spreading your jam. The inside of the hotel restaurant had loads of space - you lost my custom for want of a decent cup and to sit inside away from the wasps. Such a shame!

Amazing view and setting to look over the sea. We went for lunch after reading good reviews. It was a special lunch and a nice trip out. Interesting restaurant quite casual great views ask for window seat. Staff very friendly and efficient no sign of Covid restriction only a small bottle of hand sanitizer on reception but not very noticeable. No mask were worn by staff. Limited lunch menu we both had fish bbq £25 each so not cheap!! One tray arrived with a small sea bass a tinfoil bag of lovely mussels but with alot of onion and no sauce and not very warm also had few large prawns but cold (bbq?)and some plain squid pieces no flavour or sign of bbq but also cold, a very well dressed salad too much dressing on. I think the seafood was all supposed to be served hot from bbq but the warmest item was the water in the finger bowl. This was all served with a plate of luke warm ratatouille and oily deep fried boiled new potatoes. Have to say really not impressed would rather of spent £25 each on a good bowl of Mussels in a tasty sauce and chips or just the sea bass and a good salad. But enjoying our celebration day out we decided to have dessert. Brulee lovely, chocolate pudding with peanut butter and bacon was like it is batch made and kept in fridge until required had no flavour flair or skill. Nice looking hotel bar but hotel and restaurant toilets were obviously used by all visitors to beach the facilities were well used and not cleaned no sign of covid restriction not expected when you see how much it costs to stay in the hotel. Would try again if it was another menu maybe as lovely to sit and see the view. Make time to take a walk whilst there.

We stayed 3 nights, Fri Sat & Sun, very comfortable well furnished room, ensuite, with breakfast (diy) available in little kitchen down the hall. Wonderful old world inn, great bar, and bar food til 8.30 (lunchtime til 5 on Sunday, no evening meal). Very friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful location in the wilds of Dartmoor.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
