I’m an Edinburgh resident and also a Friend of the National Galleries, and, for the last sixteen years or so, this has been a favourite spot of mine for lunch or coffee. However, I am so disappointed by recent visits and am reluctant to visit again. After attending an exhibition today, I bought an iced coffee for my son. The woman who served us was rude - she was also very unhelpful to a Spanish family before us in the queue - and, although we paid extra for syrup to be added to the iced coffee, hardly any actually was. Prices are really expensive now, portions smaller, the choice more limited and friendly service is sadly lacking, so what is there left to love?

If you're visiting the art gallery, this is a good option for lunch. As with many art galleries, it's pricey - a sandwich and a cup of tea is £8.50. Cafe gets busy at lunch time, so to get a table, it's best to be there early.

Lovely food but way too expensive. Three drinks, 2 sandwiches, 1 soup. 1 slice of bread. 1 brownie. It came to just over £34. There was hardly anything to select. The queue was long. The girl serving looked really unhappy. The food tastes great but I won't visit again.

The lunch menu was varied with a considerable range of choice. We opted for soup and a cheese scone, and a plate of delicious fresh salads. The flavour was lovely and the portions generous. Other options included freshly made sandwiches with tempting fillings and some hot items .Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options we're available . We succumbed to returning to order cakes, coffee and a cuppa, all of which we would highly recommend. The ambiance is pleasant and relaxed. Today the sun shone through the windows and we enjoyed the view over the terrace as we ate our meal. A lovely way to spend a Sunday lunchtime. Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient .

I used to love coming here but since my visit today I won’t be returning. I visited with my partner and ten year old son for lunch before going to see the Hepworth exhibition. What a disappointment! Very few options for children so I just asked for a ham roll. What I received was half a simple white roll with no butter for £2 (see image). I asked where the other half was if it is was possible to have it and was told that I would be charged an additional £2 to have that too!!! I explained that I thought it was incredibly miserly and certainly not enough for my son's lunch. They replied that was the portion they gave kids and I couldn't have the other half of the roll. There was no attempt to make amends at my complaint and I was left feeling completely ripped off. My own lunch consisted of two salad portions for £7. Previously I would have found this a good option for lunch but it was served on a side plate and was also a measly amount. I don't know what has happened to this once good cafe, it's sad.

Wow. Visited many times and spent almost as long in the cafe garden as the gallery but cafe really needs to step back up. Busy Sunday afternoon, poor selection of cakes desert and ridiculously priced. I understand it probably cannot continue at the previous level with glorious cakes and cookies in abundance but it’s a long way from where it was.

Really disappointing return to what used to be a favourite place to eat. service by one person doing everything so a huge queue built up, even for a coffee. Prices have also increased - the main meal cost £11! and a basic hot chocolate (made with water) cost £3.60 and 60p extra for cream which is just excessive

This gallery is just fantastic but the café, which used to be absolutely great, is awful at the moment. The two girls serving were so slow and lifeless and the food range was so small. We came at 12.30 and most of the rolls were gone and the bacon and avocado and chilli Mayo one I had was stale and I couldn’t detect any chilli Mayo - it felt like it was yesterday’s stock. Very little choice and the quality was so poor. We’re living in hard times at the moment but this wonderful museum must need the income from the restaurant and I can’t see how it can generate that with such a change in standards in what used to be a quality cafe.

We visited the cafe after a lovely afternoon at the gallery and were very disappointed with the poor service. We took a table which was piled high with dirty dishes, as wre all the other available tables. We had to wait over 20 minutes to catch the attention of one of the staff members, who really seemed to be studiously ignoring the state of the tables. She acted as though we were asking for something beyond the pale and still ignored all the other tables covered in used cups and plates. Our order took a further twenty minutes to arrive and we had to go back to the counter to ask where it was. We complained to the same member of staff, given we only ordered two hot drinks and a soft drink, and the cafe wasn’t busy at all, but she just looked at us incredulously. I noticed other customers being served their orders before us, even though they came in long after we did and other customers also sitting and waiting for long periods while the staff ignored them. I felt like the staff didn’t have a clue what they were doing and they were deliberately ignoring both the customers and the state of the cafe in general

Very disappointing. Despite advance booking, staff weren't expecting us and there was a great deal of confusion. We waitied 25 minutes before our "savoury course" was served (sandwiches take that long??), by which time I'd finished my cup of coffee and wasn't offered more....I eventually had to ask! The scones were acceptable although a little dry and I was unimpressed by the cakes. My daughter didn't like any of the sandwich fillings. Not what we've come to expect in Edinburgh for afternoon tea! Nowhere near worth the £30 for afternoon tea for two and we won't be returning. A number of places are offering far better quality and value.

Popped in for tea and cakes when we had been wandering around the gallery and made use of the outdoor seating in a wonderful setting.Cakes were out of this world, between us we tried scones, ginger topped shortcake, chocolate caramel slices and could have stayed forever.I eat a lot of cakes and these were simply some of the best ever - marvellous to whoever made them.Proper tea in a pot with leaves - job done!!!

I have not been to this cafe in a while as I thought it had gone down hill but decided today to give it another chance, I am so glad I did as the difference was amazing the beautiful display of home baking as you went in was georgous and made it very difficult to choose what to have we decided on the salted caramel brownie and the empire biscuit which was topped with raspberry and pistachio a bit different to the normal empire which made it very special both were to die for.The salads and main courses looked very appealing and fresh will come back a the next time for lunch to try.All in all a lovely visit and glad I decided to go back highly recommend

This is the third afternoon tea I have booked. They have all been very enjoyable. The staff accommodate awkward requests with grace. If you choose not to have the afternoon tea, the soup and choice of cakes are very satisfying. The craft shop is also very good.

The cafe downstairs in the Modern Art One gallery is one of Edinburgh’s best kept secrets. Always excellent for a morning coffee, some lunch or afternoon tea, it really comes into its own on a summer day when you can sit at one of the tables setup in the courtyard garden outside. Being south facing it really catches the sun in the afternoon. The cafe also serves wine and bottled beers so could well be the smartest beer garden in Scotland!Whatever you fancy, it is the perfect place to finish up after a tour of the world class modern art exhibitions held in the gallery.

I just wanted something sweet after looking at the exhibits. The bakers had prepared a salted caramel butter cream icing cake and Oh boy was it delicious. That slice of cake was all I ate the whole day because I just wanted to savor it. Very nice service there as well.

This restaurant is situated in the Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. It is the usual pleasant, but overpriced cafe of this type. We had soup, coffee and a cake for 3 people and we paid around £40! The food was nice but nothing amazing for that price. The bread was homemade and extremely yummy. The food serving area was cramped and the queue was very long even on a relatively quiet day.

Service was dreadful waited very long time for food when it did appear not correct sandwiches as requested and bread beginning to dry out. Last Sunday was a Bank Holiday and Mt enough staff had turned up would go again but definitely avoid a Bank Holiday Sunday as would definitely be a better experience.

Excellent afternoon tea in a gorgeous venue. We used an ITISON voucher and so it was outstanding value. A couple of small hiccups - I said I was a fish eating vegetarian in my online booking but was still served a ham sandwich which I gave to my husband. The little glass of pea soup was a lovely surprise but not very hot and it would have been nice to have a choice of teas. I would go again as it was very enjoyable nevertheless and the amount of food meant that I didn't miss the ham sandwich at all. I mention this as I thought any requests or additional bits of information would be acted on otherwise why put that section on the online booking form? A lovely afternoon.

Food ok, baked potatoes, salad etc. Spent over £15 but they would not give us the cake offer as we did not spend it in one transaction. (Within 30 minutes did not qualify!) However they had the cake offer poster covered over with another one at the till so the customer would not know that an offer was on. The posters for offer were only being displayed on the back of the doors in the loos. Weird. Won't be back and the Managers haughty attitude was appalling. I will be reporting them to Trading Standards however.....

Fantastic traditional Edinburgh pub with good beer, whisky and great pizza. The pub retains its original (and odd) Romanesque style decor on a beautiful polished wood interior. You can often catch some good music here as well

Had a great time at the Royal Mile Tavern! We stopped in for a drink and loved the lively, welcoming atmosphere. The pub has a great vibe—perfect for relaxing and enjoying a drink with friends. The staff was friendly, and the overall experience was fantastic. Definitely a spot I’d recommend for anyone looking for good drinks and a fun, laid-back atmosphere!

Our hotel staff recommended this restaurant for dinner. The first floor is a pub with a restaurant on the second floor. The overall ambiance was cozy, authentic and comfortable. The staff were all friendly and attentive. I had the fish and chips - fried beautifully and crispy and a huge piece of fish! My husband had the special - Cumberland sausage with mash and red onion gravy - decadently rich and delicious! The chocolate coconut cheesecake was a light and delicious dessert. We enjoyed our experience so much that we came back again the next night! We highly recommend!!
