Bennets Bar in Edinburgh, City of

This is a strange pub in that, it has two entrances. There is a small bar which can be entered from Valleyfield Street, which also has outdoor seating. The main entrance is on Lothian Road. This is a 19th Century establishment. The original art and fittings are still here. Whilst at the bar, I noticed a small hatch and asked about it. This is a small 6 person private area. What a wonderful pub.

Took colleagues from all over the world to experience Scottish hospitality but they left shocked at the behaviour of the barmaid.

Fabulous interiors. Decent cask. Not the largest range of cask beer.

Like the bar and selection of drinks but it's always really cold ❄ no matter spring summer or winter

I have wanted to visit this pub for a long time due to the private little room with its own hatch to the bar. The service was top notch and the food was beautiful, we ordered pizzas, (homemade) garlic bread and chips.

An old, cozy pub. There are delicious little things to eat and beer and whiskey... The atmosphere is great, the service is friendly. Everything is great. Unless you go there when the 6 Nations Cup (Rugby) final between Ireland and Scotland is being broadcast live... then you can drink as much as you want, you just can't fall over... 😀😃 🙂

Very busy for an early Saturday afternoon. Friendly staff and regulars mostly of the older type. Nice spot though.

Proper boozer just off Lothian Road. Really friendly service and a good range of craft beers, wines, cocktails and spirits. Good atmosphere with a varied age range. Food menu looked good and reasonably priced compared to some others in this area. Good to see this type of pub still exists

A must visit if you’re interested in late-Victorian Edinburgh pub architecture. We must be thankful that many of its original features have been retained.

Bar looking worse for wear. Please put on some heating. The place was frozen and customers were commenting about it. Even the bar staff were wearing hats and scarves. Not a pleasant place to sit and have a beer.

Great pub, good beer and good service. Not been refurbished so still has a used old feel to it with mirrors and wood. Sadly that includes the toilets which are in need of an upgrade. Gets busy and can be noisy.

Looks old school, completely different to any pub in Australia.. service was quick and beer, well, it poured like a Guinness and was delicious. I saw food there which liked fine but it was the beer we were after..

Nice bar, very old but quaint, toilets had seen better days

Bar looks inviting from the outside- staff are young and enthusiastic- the place has experienced a renaissance since Covid. Unfortunately despite the money the owners must be raking in the women’s toilets are rank, smelly, out of order and dark and the bar is freezing!! No fire in December- the many bodies there aren’t sufficient to heat it up…Disappointing

What a beautiful pub, I hear it hasn't changed since 1906 and I can see why! Can't beat it if you're looking for a traditional Scottish pub with a great range of drinks, and that bartender James really knows his stuff

This place is great! The atmosphere is very nice with a good mix of people. The drinks were reasonably priced and the food was really good. I’d recommend this place to anyone and will surely come back here!

Fortunately I read the guest book in the Air bnb I stayed in just 100 yards from Bennetts Bar. Spent three consecutive days in what I can confidently say is one of my favourite pubs I have ever had the pleasure to visit. Excellent choice of beer and a selection of malt whiskey that I am now planning to work my way through, one by one when I next get a chance to visit. Had food on the first afternoon which was mostly beige but none the less very tasty. It soaked up the alcohol so we could both power through the evening. Second visit I was clearing the little table we were about to sit on and inadvertently gave my whiskey to the barman. Five minutes later I realised and proceeded back to the bar only to find he had kept it aside and handed it back. The service everyday we visited was excellent, the knowledge of 150 whiskeys more than sufficient to help me choose wisely. Brilliant atmosphere and friendly locals . Great history going back almost 200 years. Cannot wait to return.

Best pub in Edinburgh, excellent beer selection however that could be improved with the addition of one or two more non-alcoholic options.

Excellent neighborhood boozer. Historic Public House tastefully decorated with original features & interior. The draught beers are well kept. I tried the Wee Jock,a good entry level Scotch Ale & was fresh & tasty. Good ambiental music too with relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Lively pub atmosphere, always busy when I've been in and there was an Open Mic night on the Sunday when I recently went. Convenient location with decent transport links and prices are quite standard for what you see across the city.

If you are looking for a bar right out of the 1930s in the UK you are in luck. Bennet's bar is really traditional decor, but a really modern attitude. They hosted a few queer events in the past and it's been really fun to spend time there. The food is great they have pizza at an affordable price, and everything is able to be made vegan just ask for a vegan pizza or vegan version of xyz. If you aren't sure then the staff are more than happy to help. There's also a wide range of alcoholic drinks and traditional ales, as well as beer and larger on draft. I love the atmosphere at Bennet's, it's just so nice, and if I want something cosy I can go through to Thier lounge bar too! Every time I have gone I ended up speaking French but I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

Proper ale house with a fantastic range if spirits.

Lovely old bar tucked away from the crowds. Like stepping back in time. A proper bar, with proper Scots ales, and a massive selection of spirits. The staff are really friendly and very understanding. Worth a wee visit if you're in the area and thirsty.

Very attentive and knowledged Bar staff, big variety of whiskys and beers.

This is my favourite place for Whisky cravings They got such an amazing collection I was astonished. Personally they had my all favourite whisky collection They got shinning knight on the cask ales. Yet not to forget it's pricy a bit. Because I wanted to have Rasmay it was £7 something for a shot.

On nous a conseillé des whisky et des cocktails qui étaient très bons. Les prix sont corrects. L'ambiance était super, surtout avec un chanteur. Si vous devez essayer un pub à Edimbourg, allez à celui ci !

I absolutely love this pub! The staff are lovely, the pub itself full of character and much like the Tardis is bigger on the inside than out. It's well known for its snug that you sometimes need to book in advance which I've not got yet. As for the drinks, they have an amazing whisky collection and recently opened up old, and very expensive ones to serve to use mere mortals. I've yet to try one, if any left. I'm a Guinness drinker, and it's exceptional there, but the prices are city prices so just be aware but don't let it put you off. It's an amazing pub that does a good selection of ales, etc and food too, as well as live music. You won't be disappointed...

Beautiful old bar with all the old fixtures etc. It's the oldest pub that's not been changed for year's. Beautiful pictures and alot more up on the walls and beams etc. Everyone should go and have a look and maybe a couple a drinks😁or maybe a few more, enjoy 💯

Nice local pub with locals not too much foreign visitor. Fine great Whisky selection. Been there serveral times during the week. Also visited with different fellows they had the same opinion so give it a try.

Coole Bar mit einigen Ales on Tap die offenbar wechseln. Malts of the Week gibts auch, finde ich eine gute Idee. Bedienung war freundlich und schnell. Ambiente ist unschlagbar

Probably the best pub in Edinburgh.

Love this bar and have done since I first went in there in the late 1970's. Original features, good beer and great vibe. One thing a reupholstering of the seating is needed though 😄

Excellent traditional city centre bar. An good selection of quality beers and spirits and the staff are helpful and friendly. The décor doesn’t look like it’s changed much over the years and it’s better for that. The tables with the maps are a nice touch. It was quiet when I arrived, but got busier later and either way the atmosphere is easy going and welcoming. You’ll enjoy it where you’re in a group of just grabbing a quick pint on your own

Six pounds ten p for a pint of Guinness. Daylight robbery while being served by an indifferent staff. I was their only customer!!! Plus (and this is really bad) no food available at all despite being well advertised.

1972 is alive and well in Bennett’s Bar. The outside is tatty and dirty, but open the doors and it’s another time. Welcoming, friendly, crowded, great atmosphere, great beer. Exactly the same as back in the day.

Liked the other room ...more space plus the lassie turned off the relentless music so we hear each other talk. Thank you.

Netter traditioneller Pub. Dieser ist aufgeteilt in einen essen und einen Bar Bereich. Essen war für ein Pub echt lecker. Die cheesy Fries bekommen eine klare Empfehlung. Personal ist auch super nett und hilfsbereit.

Strange place. 3 Cask ales(all good). Dreadful smell in the place, needed a good scrub down. Prices for single malts (25ml) shocking.

Went in here for a drink with two friends and was met by a young miserable female. Upon enquiring if she was happy then to inform her face. She grumpily retorted that we would not be served any more drinks. How pathetic and mature. You work in hospitality and smiling should be natural to greet customers especially in our Capitol City. Shame on you.
