We went here recently after a long time and felt that the food has improved since a decline in quality after a new management take over. The ambience however is somewhat lacking , maybe due to the almost total lack of service( in terms of waiter/ waitress). You have menus on the tables and there seems to be a large water tank placed unceremoniously on a bunch of tables in the middle of the room surrounded by stainless steel plates covered in upside down stainless steel tumblers( many of which I had to look through to find a clean looking one). The general feeling u get in the restaurant is a lack of care towards the customer(there is a sign saying 'place ur order at the till', so after a quick look through, we went to order, after which we set eyes upon the water dispenser( which we guessed was for us to help ourself to water ), giving the air of some kind of hostel canteen. I have no problems with self service but , saying this in the nicest way possible, even some of the smallest roadside restaurants in India running out of a shack will have someone take your order, you will generally have glasses on the table or be able to order a drink or water that will be brought to the table. Here it feels like they definitely want to cut out that middleman to help the customer feel comfortable. Even though the food is brought to the table from the kitchen, the person who does this soon disappears and leaves u looking around for someone to ask for a bit of service. On asking to pack some left over food to go, we were brought a take away container and it was left on the table! This is the first time I have ever seen this in any kind of restaurant. Surely the minute or so, it would take for the employee to put the food into the take away container would cost him nothing. Then again, one wonders if the owner has given him strict instructions to let the customers help themselves while he focuses on doling out food to customers . It's a shame, because, the food was genuinely tasty, and if they just sorted out a few things like the water at the tables , employed at least one waiter or waitress( surely on the weekends this is important), go that extra mile towards trying to feel the customers feel welcome, they would probably have a much better business, which customers would rush back for/ recommend. The owner lady / manager on the till seemed friendly but other than taking the order at the till/ accepting payment at the till, she provided no other service. and on a last note, she did not provide an itemised bill, which is surely a very basic requirement when visiting a restaurant. Impressed? Not yet, there is still some work to be done

Vadas were refried and upon questioning the server admitted that those were prepared on previous day. When I asked him why do you serve stale food to customers? Dhai Vadas, Chilly Idli, masala Dosa, channa bhatura, vada curry, veg biryani and paani puris were brilliant. A convenient choice given its across the street from a temple, but my recent experience was distinctly bad, the food didn't seem fresh and lacked taste. In the past year we had lunch here on weekends a few times. The quality and taste of the food has consistently declined in the past months. It seems the operating management changed a couple of times. seems likely to be the reason the restaurant is failing to provide tasty south indian food any more.

I have eaten here on many occasions in this café. The place is clean and what it lacks in atmosphere is made up by the quality of the food. It offers dishes that are not typical of Indian restaurants in the UK and are greasy or excessively salty. I think that the food is more like home cooked rather than restaurant food. Highly recommended.

A cafe more than a restaurant, with many vegetarian dishes on the menu. Clean and friendly and cheap and delicious. Warning: "spicy" can mean "very hot", even for people like me, who are quite used to eating chillis. My daughter chose korma, since that is traditionally (at least in this country) not very hot, but nevertheless found it rather spicy. So be careful (unless you like vindaloo) - but anyway we all had a delicious meal, and I highly recommend this cafe.

Ever since I moved to Reading three years ago, local friends have been telling me to try Cafe Madras. We tried to go several times, but circumstances always got in the way; now that I have left Reading, one of my biggest regrets is that I only went here once just before moving out. They advertise themselves as South Indian cuisine, though they do serve a small selection of northern and Anglo dishes as well. They are also half restaurant and half cafe, in having water tanks available for refill and making you order your food up at the bar for it to be brought to you - much in a similar way to Bhel Puri House, but only more efficient and fresh.I found it incredibly difficult to choose something to order, purely because it all just looked so good! On top of that, the menu is incredibly inexpensive. I settled on the Idli with chilli for a starter, and my old favourite of Chicken Chettinad for a main course, mainly to see if here they would serve it any differently to Pappadam's down on King's Street. On ordering, I also attempted to order the curried rice; I was told by the manager that the two dishes clash in terms of flavour and that I should order something else. That, on top of the numerous descriptions dotted around the dining area with an explanation into the origins of most of the dishes, seems to display that indeed Cafe Madras do know what they are talking about regarding their food and that they posess a great amount of knowledge. I changed my decision to the Egg Fried Rice instead, and waited eagerly. The Idli came after a reasonable amount of time, and wow. I had never tasted anything like them before, and would happily eat them again. The chili sauce they came with seemed to contain the best parts of a curry, a Thai sweet chili, and a Chinese kung po, all blended together expertly. Then came the Chicken Chettinad main, and it too was superb. The sauce rich and full of flavour, with a perfect amount of capsaicin that soaked well into the delicious egg fried rice. The only complaint I would have with the place is that the portions are too large! Despite sharing the rice with my partner, I could not even finish the whole portion and left feeling absolutely stuffed. My partner fared less well than that even; having ordered the chicken pancake and received a delicious roll that threatened to encompass the entire table! I am still a big fan of Pappadam's for my South Indian curry fix, but for something a little different at a much better price I can only recommend Cafe Madras with the highest level of commendation.

This restaurant has a similar set up to many pub restaurants - get a table, note the number, choose food from menu - then order at the till and pay as you order. Cuts their staffing costs and yet the customer still gets their meal brought to them. Food is distinctly South Indian in style with a number of dishes that we did not recognise as 'typically Indian'. The lady at the till was very happy to answer questions about the food and help with appropriate choices. The food was delicious when it came - we were not too adventurous and stuck with familiar meals but even they were slightly different to our expectation. The pakoras were excellent, the Korma very smooth and tasty, the pilau rice plentiful and tasty and the naan bread was freshly cooked and absolutely delicious. You can have free fresh water with your meal or soft and alcoholic drinks from the till point. There were a number of Indian people from the local population eating in the restaurant which made us feel that the food must be of good standard and quality - we were not disappointed. It was a very pleasant and enjoyable meal. Worth a visit.

When the food eventually arrived it was still frozen in the middle. One dish didn't arrive at all. We have been going here for about two years from time to time with the expectation that things would improve. Sadly, it's got worse. Totally chaotic and it was less than 2/3 full. I have never reviewed on trip advisor before but have done so in the hope that the arrogant female running this establishment and the owner sees this. The lady is not the owner and keeps purporting to be to my friends and others. The owner needs to wake up and realise that not only us the south indian food the worst representation of the cuisine I have ever seen but the north indian food is terrible too. Given the new owners are north indian... surely you can get something like lamb tikka right? It has no flavour whatsoever, either the maranade had not been left long enough and the meat had a very strong lamb smell. When mentioning this to the owner she arrogantly starts shaking her head and smiling and telling me how good it is. She then tells me she doesnt eat lamb. What an awful response.Furthermore the mango lassi simply had no flavour, there was not enough mango and a very low fat yoghurt used to make the drink. Any indian restaurant knows the standard for lassi, I asked the waiter to add more mango to my lassi. He took my glass and just didnt return, I found out after waiting for ten minutes that the owner had told him not to return the drink and she did not inform us. I approached him and asked him what happened to it. She rudely stared at me and said that's we serve lassi, people complain its too sweet. I just asked her to try it and tell me that is good lassi. She has not tried the food in the restaurant and has told me she used to be an accountant so has no idea how to run a restaurant. The service staff are abismal and have no customer training. The place is cold and draughty. They are cutting costs at every corner and it is showing in the dining experience and food. Our other dishes (mutar paneer and Dosa) were sub par and they clearly show that this is not south indian food. The owners must be mad to raise the prices when the quality is this bad. Avoid this restaurant like the plague unless you like moody managers who pretend to be owners, unauthentic tasteless 'south indian' food and even worse north indian food. Run by a amateurs. Wake up.

I was a regular at this place before it was sold and absolutely enjoyed the food. Since it has gone under new ownership it feels like the food standards have gone out of the door too. The food tastes completely different to what it used to despite assurances by the owner that the chef is the same. We ordered their trademark ghee podi dosa which is meant to be crispy and have a spicy layer of chutney inside with lots of ghee. However, it turned out to be soggy, bland and with barely any chutney and ghee. The place wasn't busy at all and we were the only ones there at that time so there was no excuse for soggy dosas. The medu vadas had so many peppercorns inside that it became impossible to eat with biting into peppercorns. The chilli paneer was disgusting and rubbery, went straight in the bin. Will not return. The place has been ruined forever!

We went to cafe Madras after a long time with kids looking forward to the same friendly inexpensive south Indian food joint that we had come to love over 4 years in Reading. We realised that decor had changed as we went in not sure how much of it had changed. We were greeted with signs of pay at till and only cash payment below £20. Pretty unusual for a full service restaurant. We waited for someone to give us the menu cards but none came. I waited to ask someone who appeared like a waiter for menu who just handed me one after waiting for 5 minutes. He gestured me to pay at the till. We were 4 and only one menu was not a logical choice so I had to ask for one more. One look at the menu and we realised that the prices had shot up significantly. Wow, no service and higher prices- definite put off for the next visit . So we quickly decided and walked up to the till and ordered. The bill came to £17.25. I was pretty sure my total was £15.25 when I left the table. On asking, the lady said we charge £2 as service charge. Wow no service and service charge . I told her this is a definite put off but I am staying only because my daughters were really looking forward to it. food arrived in a couple of minutes. We were willing to put it all behind and enjoy the meal when my daughter observed a piece of plastic in her food. That was the last straw for me. We left the place. The lady behind the counter was unapologetic but courteous enough to refund the money. I took the money, picked up my crying 4 year old and got out of the place vowing to myself never to return even by mistake. Not recommended anymore

Just around the corner from Hillingdon prince doesn't look much but offers great food for a budget price. Atmosphere was pleasant I would use again.

Poor service, ok quality food and quite expensive compared to other south indian restaurant Chennai Dosa. Visited last night and wasn't happy at all. Dining tables in pathetic conditions, chairs pad all torn apart. But food prices are quite high, close to a fine dining restaurant but here zero service and no ambiance. Won't be visiting again.

I ate at Cafe Madras and thoroughly enjoyed the food and felt like home away from home. The staff were very helpful with the selection and advised me about the food and the prices clearly it was worth the money i spent. Very reasonable place to eat.A bit too reasonable i must say.

Went for lunch this afternoon with my son. We both had a Masala dosa and brought home Idlis. The bill should've come up to £12.80, but was charged £15.80. I was told that the prices had gone up, but the menus were still displaying the old prices! Trading standards take note!Secondly, we were told that they did not accept credit cards and again there was no mention anywhere that they only accepted cash! Will not be visiting again!

We ate at a lovely restaurant which had the wonderful smell of indian spices. The lady that worked there was a lovely friendly woman who made us feel welcome and made our stay a brilliant one. We felt like she was our friend; thats how nice someone is. My friend and I felt at home there. Anyway, the food was WONDERFUL. The madras tea smelt and tasted delicious. Those chicken pakora balls were delightful indeed. I enjoyed chicken korma which tasted heaps better with some rice. Wonderful visit that we gave them a tip. They deserved it. It was also well kept and clean and warm. I recommend you go there! In my opinion this was good value of money for dinner.

I have been here twice recently - the dosa are pretty top notch - the sambhar is delicious. They were helpful with our allergies and enjoyed the local craft beers. Good value - it is not high end cuisine but it is good value and tastier than Chennai Dosa in town IMHO. Friendly staff.

What can I say... I've been visiting here on and off for my dosa fix for the last 7 years.... it's been a bit hit and miss at time... however. .. the last few times the bar has most definitely been raised. small changes to the recipes have truly elevated this small place. The sambar with the dosa is spectacular and bursting with heady spicing... the tandoori chicken is one of the best I've had in this country. .. so nice to see a tandoori without the toxic red food colouring.... and the real hidden gem which is off menu at the moment is the chicken keema.Great effort guys... you've raised the bar and expectations for my next visit

I would like to give a better review since the Manager is a very friendly man but unfortunately the food just isn't great. I lived in South India for over 10 years so know what it should taste like and unfortunately the food here just isn't good. Good prices but not good value since it is not enjoyable, sorry.

A lovely restaurant with staff that really care about your enjoyment. We were very hungry and so ordered 2 dosas, including a house speciality with paneer, a curry, a veg dish and some rice. It was too much! But so difficult to stop eating because it was all so delicious. One thing we were particularly impressed by was the number of Indian diners were eating there. Surely a good sign!Very impressive meal and very cheap! Our food came to £20 in total.

Cafe Madras was a short walk from the hotel I was staying at nearby - they probably would have delivered, but I needed to get some fresh air so decided to go in. The decor was fresh and modern looking and the wait time was average. The food was OK. I tried a new dish for me - vegetable kutthu, but it wasn't to my liking and I couldn't finish it.

Because we are not very familiar with Indian food, we asked our waiter to recommend some dishes. His three choices were fabulous; all three selections were things we would not have ordered without his help. Gobi Manchurian, Chili Fish and Masala Dosa collectively made for a fantastic dinner for two. If you are unsure as to how to navigate the menu, ask for help and you won't be disappointed.

When eating here youve got to have the masala dosa, it's a large crispy pancake with a blob of spiced potato and some chutneys, utterly delicious utterly addictive. Then if you still got room you should try the lamb biriani it's,wonderful. This cafe has no airs and graces they are all about serving the customer very well cooked spicy and tasty food. A real gem.

I have limited experience with Indian food but have always enjoyed curry and other specialties. This is a storefront style restaurant, with plenty of tables. The menu was easy to read with photographs of some of the favorite dishes. It is a casual setting with authentic metal plates. The waiter was very friendly, took time to explain each dish and made suggestions for us. I was there with four other people, one was my friend's teenage son. Some of our selections: Dosa, Idli and the three chats available (Indian street food) Samosa, Channa and Aloo Papdi. We also ordered a chicken and lamb sizzler. We had plenty to eat and enjoyed everything.Despite being very busy, the waiter could see that I was trying to take a group selfie for Facebook. He stopped and took it for us.Prices were very reasonable and we were shocked at how low the final bill was.

We happened to order Lamb kothu and egg kothu. It was really horrible. Looked like they ran out of parathas and instead mixed in some all purpose flour. It was very sticky. I dont know if the kothu here is usually nice or if its a one off thing. But definitely this is not how kothu is.. All we could feel in our mouths was sticky dough ..

Chicken lollipop tasted off, like it was old Chicken, the dish was too sour, vinegar overload. Chicken fried rice was promised with breaded chicken, but it wasn't.
