Cafe Grumpys in Chichester

Although they’ve faced a few days of closure it doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the food they serve, food was done beautifully and the burgers cooked very well. Generous portion sizes and very very thick and tasty milkshakes I will definitely be returning. Also to note the tables and kitchen are kept quite clean and there was wasn’t much mess on the floor round the crowded tables which is a good sign the place is being looked after well.

Mrs M and I fancied a Diner experience for breakfast so we googled and found Penny's in Selsey. Fairly basic menu but it seemed to press the right buttons for our American Diner yearning. Arrived around 10:15 and it was a little busy. School holidays and a special offer of free children's breakfast seemed to have brought in some extra customers. No problem though as there were plenty of tables, all with the authentic red vinyl diner style seats. The decor is all-American too with the typical road signs, Coke adverts and juke box motifs. Torn between pancakes or a regular cooked breakfast we decided to opt for the latter today and try the pancakes next time. As we are both vegetarian, the vegan breakfast was the obvious choice and we both opted for some eggs on top (mine fried, Mrs M's scrambled) No problem with ordering from the helpful and polite staff. Filter coffee promptly arrived (they also have the usual range of espresso based coffees, but as we were going for the diner experience, we figured filter was more authentic) and it was very good. Despite the full house of customers, the food didn't take long and boy was it a generous portion! No room on the plate for delicious sourdough toast which had to be delivered on its own side plate. Hot and tasty, we almost managed to eat it all, but Mrs M was defeated by the last sausage and I didn't have room for it either! Finally, to crown the Diner experience, the waitress came and refilled our coffee - and at that moment I knew this cafe would become our regular breakfast treat. Vegan breakfast with eggs was £10. Definitely not Grumpy!

Came in for a coffee and quick bite to eat, don't ask for much but when the staff admit that the doughnuts we had ordered were being microwaved as they had come in frozen it was pretty laughable especially as the next day when in the local supermarket we found the exact same doughnuts we had ordered on the shelf. I would think twice about stopping here again even for a coffee.

Used to be good when it was grumpys cafe but after visiting today for breakfast we won’t be going back, the prices have been ramped up and the food was not as good, you couldn’t even cut the bacon, the Mushrooms tasted like they were tinned, the beans were only just warm and the eggs were a bit under cooked, the music was over the top, we don’t mind background music but it was too loud at breakfast time and was awful. Such a shame it has changed the menu was so limited only one English breakfast to choose from. Feel robbed £22.40 later!!

We visited this lovely cafe for breakfast while staying I'm chichester Excellent service and a very extensive menu. The have a garden at the back so ideal for families. Just off the High Street down Penny Lane Well done to the staff. Well worth the visit if you are in the area

excellent value, large portions, friendly service and most important these days a secluded and large back garden for outdoors eating! Surely must be the best place for breakfast in Selsey?

Having walked much further than we had planned, we were ravenous when we made our first visit to this unassuming cafe. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful. We had fantastic sandwiches: one stuffed with sausages for my husband and mine a melt in the mouth, generous serving of freshly cooked roast beef. They were fantastic and the most amazing value for money with chips and salad, too. Everything was served with enthusiasm and masses of smiles!

Our menu called this place 'Kitchen Grumpy's' but I think it's the same place! We had a light lunch and a breakfast here during our stay in Selsey. The granary bread is lovely (as sandwiches and toast). Cheese sandwiches came with a salad garnish and chips - the staff obligingly swapped the chips for more salad for us. It was fairly simple but fresh although a tidge heavy on the red onion. Breakfast was a bit confusing in that I ordered one round of granary toast with mushrooms but it came with an additional round of toast and grilled tomatoes, for the same price as the original order! Very generous but strange :-) There's a nice clean toilet and the virus spacing/test and trace details and hand gel were reassuring. There's outside seating and an area for children to play. A smashing place if you like stomach-lining generously portioned English breakfasts. Nigel, the owner, has done some sterling work raising money to help NHS workers with food supplies - what a good thing to do!

Visited this place several times, very welcoming and customer friendly. Good track and trace protocols in place, food excellent, very flexible if you want something special. Comfortable inside and nice garden at rear. Well worth a visit.

Sadly I have to say this was a major let down, food was awful, chicken ceasar, no parmesan cheese or Anchovies, swimming in some sauce, far to much, then there was the flies and wasps not to mention the sea gulls, this has the potential to be so much better and I hope it does improve but at the moment I can't recommend.

Popped into here on a sunny Sunday morning, mainly for my intake of coffee so of course the kids requested their intake of sweet things (yes, we are on holiday)!! Social distancing and adherence to the Covid instructions were strictly followed here – handwash on arrival, details handed over before we even entered the place – well done on that! We chose to sit outside as it was lovely out so didn’t want to miss out, also, as there was a bouncy castle in the garden, little one was straight in there, shoes and socks off – bye bye! Service was prompt and with a flourish, coffee was superb, kids ones even better, as the photographs will show! A very pleasant way to spend an half hour or so – after dragging little one off the bouncy castle!

Went for brunch on the Saturday after Christmas. American pancakes were lovely. I had the fruit version and my husband had the bacon version. Great value for money too.

We called today to find out if there was a menu that could be emailed to us and a price list as we are coming to selsy soon and my wife is disabled.we first got told call.back in 10mins as busy.the second time we got told were not a resturant and the man was very rude.my husband said there was no.need to be rude and got the phone slammed down.on.him.what a way to treat new customers.well heres 4 that wont be coming..

We visited this cafe and weren't dissapointed. Lovely meals good portion size. We ordered an oap meal and were amazed the size. The only thing I was dissapointed with was finding it closed on a Tuesday at 1.30pm. Lovely establishment will.visit again.

Superb breakfast cooked to order. Quality was not compromised by quantity! The cafe was spotlessly clean, offered an outdoor area if you have dogs or children who need to run around. The staff were very cheery and efficient. Can’t wait to visit again.

The service was quick but I wouldn’t go back. The bacon was hard where it was over cooked and the sausages were very crunchy too. The mushrooms looked like they still had soil on them and not washed before being cooked. The eggs were good though. We asked for tap water and they served it in a bottle which looked nice at first glance but the bottle was grubby and there were bits floating in it. We sent the bottle back and asked for another which again was dirty. We then didn’t bother with water and paid for a drink instead.

Popped in for the first time this morning - very clean and tidy Breakfast was good husband had a full English I had eggs benedict - although good arrived with a salad on the side which was a bit odd as it was breakfast Seemed a lot of staff not doing a lot even though it was busy And toilet door was behind us that kept getting left open whist we were eating which was bit off putting ( needs a door closer on it ) if we had been at s different table we would have been looking into toilet

Came in for breakfast before we headed back home. Had the ‘grumpy’s breakfast’. Don’t know how they did for that price. Well cook, one of the best breakfasts we’d all had. Would highly recommend. If you have s small appetite go for the ‘All day breakfast’.

My partner and I came here with my mother for a breakfast. She wanted a small breakfast we wanted a full English. We were very disappointed despite a price difference to see that was the only significant difference. We were recommended to visit here but sadly I'll be returning to another nearby cafe who offer much better value and quality for money.

Had breakfast from the cafe this morning and it was absolutely vile! Small portions and very expensive, undercooked toast eggs weren't cooked properly, rubber like scrabbled eggs. Just all round horrible.

While staying at Bunn leisure we had the hood fortune to eat at Grumpys, and what an amazing place this is.

Pie was bad and stodg, cheap big garden pees. Gravy was ok. I used to love eating here. I could not see any leek or bacon all chicken. Really disappointed. See attached photo.

Although it is a bit hidden away, it was busy when we arrived on Sunday morning about 10.30. Three of us ordered the special summer breakfast, the other had a hangover and just wanted toast! Breakfasts were quickly bought to the table, food was really nice, good cup of tea and service was polite and friendly. We have been here before for lunch and that was good too - portions are really generous and well priced.

I hate giving a bad review I really do. It's a functional cafe. It's clean. The staff are relatively friendly. I've just never had a meal I enjoyed here. We mainly come back because the boys like playing in the little play area out back.

Been most days here while on holiday. Food was fresh and tasty enjoyed by all of us. Great value and spotless clean. Would highly recommend to all.

I had the most awfull Macaroni Cheese ever, They made it without the cheese and it tasted awfull. Then they tried to overcharge me and could not add up correctly. Avoid if possible.

Menu was disappointing but stayed anyway. Took ages to order and waitress was unable to communicate properly. Eventually ordered but all plates came out wrong. Prices on menu appeared to be different from what I was charged. Once sorted the food was good and other staff were helpful. Will go back even after these hiccups

Have just been in for breakfast I ordered beans on toast with a portion of mushrooms, was informed I had to have something else as well, didn’t really understand why but said ok I will have a egg, it came out plated as a breakfast so not even enough beans to cover the toast , the mushrooms were inedible as were a swimming pool of grease needless to say won’t be going back ,

If you want a great breakfast, lunch, or just a snack you cant go wrong here. The food is varied and well prepared and reasonably priced. I would recommend the breakfast menu for good value

Not been here for a while so though we might go in here for a change. Breakfast was good, nice sausage and not many places can claim that as many just give you a very cheap version that taste awful. I have only given 3 stars this time as I was alarmed to see one of the Waitress drop the knives and forks on the floor right by the door where people walk in, and then put them on the table for other unsuspecting customers to use. There are plenty of germs around this time of the year and could not believe she did not wash them. That needs to be sorted out, basic hygiene.

How disappointed were we when we turned up for a family Christmas meal that we pre booked months a go and paid a deposited for only to find that grumpy was locked up and no notice to say why 6 grown ups and two small children dressed in Christmas jumps looking forward to a family meal with no meal and no reason why. Where were you. We have been coming to you for years for our family Christmas meal why oh why have you let us down. No sure we can trust you again, how would you have felt if it had been you. If you had a good reason you could have posted a notice on the door and we would have understood but you were not the one to tell the children why they were not getting there meal. If you are thinking of going to grumpy for a special meal such as Christmas I urge you to think again as you to could be left standing there with no meal no reason as to why and no where else to go. So so disappointed.

Sausage and mash is amazing I am loving it . It’s in the kids section but it’s loads 😍😍😍😍 next time you can’t eat a big lunch go for this

This busy little cafe is great for breakfasts. Staff are always friendly and happy. Service is great, slightly longer wait in busy times but worth it. Always clean and inviting. Disabled toilet has always been clean and stocked!

Caesar salad not the best lettuce was soft and watery cheap dressing had French fries came in a big dish no need to have so many French bread served with the salad didn't eat it ....

I've eaten in this cafe for years , oh dear what has gone wrong ? It's ok if you want Fry up , burger and chips , that sort of meal but I've had the cottage pie ,where was the veg it has always been served with ? It was hot but tasteless, it hadn't got a nice crisp top and the mince was grey and rubbery !

We enjoyed lunch at Cafe Grumpy's today, which offered a good selection of breakfast dishes, light fare, and more substantial entrees. My jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise, was very tasty. Family enjoyed cod & chips, fish fingers sandwich (large serving!), and hunter's chicken (chicken breast covered with cheese and BBQ sauce). The remodeled space was bright, clean, and comfortable. Outdoor seating was popular and also offered a large children's play area.

Café Grumpys is always very good. Its clean and well organised and the food is amazing with plenty of it. You will not leave this place hungry.The menu is very varied covering all tastes.The garden is beautiful with kids play area and Bouncy Castle

In a recent visit to Selsey on holiday with family we decided to dine at what looked like a pleasant small cafe, however despite the polite staff and friendly atmosphere I discovered a shocking issue, located in the bathroom the toilet seat had been snapped and masked with a mere piece of what looks like brown parcel tape, I found this shocking and disappointing as a good service was ruined when I nearly caught my leg on this hazard! Luckily my family members and I were not harmed but this could easily pose a danger to others especially young children!

Lovely friendly cafe. Food is tasty and well worth the money. Good selection. Very reasonable prices. They do a fab Sunday dinner too. Highly recommended

Menu maybe too big for a small venue, however quick service and very well presented. Child portion would have been enough for adult. Varied selection with the option to sit outside. Very pleasant staff, particularly Lisa and Nicole, friendly and eager to please. Chef does seem under pressure but coped. Definitely worth a visit.

Visited Grumpys last week. Good food,good menu all at fair prices. Could open longer as we called back at about 4pm ish to be told they where closed. Think they are missing out as it is now holiday season and it was school holidays

Visited here on Mother's Day with my partner and my 2 small children. Decided to sit outside as was a warm day. Got two high chairs but the straps didn't work on either but hey ho, not a major issue just meant we had to keep a closer eye on the children rather than totally relax.Ordered just 2 breakfasts after 45 minutes breakfast still hadn't arrived, explained this to the waiter who handed 2 plates of toast and said eat this whilst you wait. Waited another 10/15 mins still no food, however final straw was when 2 large tables (6+) and (8+) got served all there food despite turning up a good 25/30 mins after us. Spoke to waiter again who said they will re-cook ours. No apologises, decided wasn't going to wait another 45 minutes and kids where baking hot so got refund. Only good thing was he waitress who served us our tea very pleasant.

This was a lunch stop on our first visit to Selsey and turned out to be the towns saving grace! We were lucky to find it. Clean, bright and inviting with seats outside to enjoy the sunshine. We only had a coffee and cake but there was also a lunchtime menu which looked quite inviting.

Best Café in Selsey. Great food and huge portions. Staff always very friendly and service excellent. Great value for money too. Certainly recommend it for families for just pop in for an excellent breakfast - vegetarian option brilliant too

Full breakfast or lighter snacks are available, plenty of choice and all meals looked tasty. There were 25 of us in the group and although service took a while we were able to sit in the garden and the children play on the bouncy castle.

A somewhat mediocre cooked breakfast for the price - egg was overcooked, mushroom was soggy & the bacon was very salty & greasy.Service was ok & the cafe itself was nicely appointed with granite tables & pleasant neutral decor but would probably eat elsewhere if visiting the area again in the future.

Want a cafe that's perfect for kids anytime of the day, this is it. Superb breakfast, family friendly wholesome lunches ,clean and modern decor, Grumpys has it all. Friendly efficient staff, a nice guarden and play area at the back, you would have to look far to beat this cafe.

Found Grumpys whilst on holiday and feel in love straight away. Fab food, massive portions, reasonably priced, great service and my 5 year old loved the milkshakes so much that we went back 3 days on a trot. The only downside is Grumpys being 100 miles from home.

We had just travelled from London down to Selsea and wanted a quick lunch. This ticked all the boxes, great coffee, good menu, excellent food, friendly service and good value. Perfect

Visited here on last day of our holiday for breakfast. 2 adults 5 kids. We got to sit outside in the garden which was nice as the kids were entertained on the bouncy castle and play house.The food was well priced and good quality.the portions were very good. It not often you find somewhere that offers bubble n squeak and Fried bread. So I was happy. Would certainly recommend anybody visiting the area give it a go.

Came here for lunch with my 1 year old to meet friends (all whom have children too). We sat in the garden area and we're pleased with the variety of things for gild ten to play with! (Bouncy castle, Wendy House, etc). The food was quick and fresh however I got wayyyy to much bread with my sandwich and not enough to fill it! I'd have rather had half the bread and the same amount of filling! Other than that it was great!

Very busy place but service always good. Nice garden to sit in. We had breakfast twice here and both times were lovely and food was great. Baguettes looked massive and very fresh. Prices were very reasonable. Picture is of the American milk butter pancakes with fruit and maple syrup.

Read the paper, eat the breakfast with a cuppa; if you've got the cash they have got the breakfast! Big breakfast and you can eat outside in the sun too!

We dropped into Cafe Grumpys for lunch, and were pleasantly surprised. The garden set behind the cafe is a lovely peaceful place ideal for young families and also wheelchair friendly. There is a bouncy castle and playhouse to keep kids entertained. We weren't there with children, and far from finding other people's families noisy or invasive, it was very calm. The lunch we ordered was delicious and great value for money. There is a lovely range of sandwiches with a wide selection of breads. The coronation chicken was excellent. My companion chose the veggie breakfast and it was spot on, well cooked and flavoursome. The service from all of the staff was pleasant and friendly, people seemed to genuinely want to assist and make sure we were completely happy. The inside of the cafe too is spacious and smart, prefect for those odd rainy days. I very much look forward to a return visit to Cafe Grumpy very soon. Brilliant spot for lunch if you have your family on holiday.

Having tried all the local cafes in Selsey we now use Grumpy's for breakfast at every opportunity. The ingredients are well presented, of good quality and cooked well. The all important sausage is great tasting and meaty, not the usual mush filled item served at most cafes. Also occasionally sampled various other options on the menu for lunch. Would definitely recommend trying Grumpy's if you're in the area.

Found grump's by total chance , not much to look at but don't be fooled great food ,great coffee ,great staff.one word of caution go with a good appetite.my wife and I could have shared one dinner between two and still had not finished it all. Great value for money will be back

Have not been here for a while, but glad to report that the food is still great. This now is my favourite place to have breakfast. The sausage (so important) is a very good tatste, and the black pudding so yummy. If you have not eaten here before, get your self down here.

First class - heard lots of people talking about it and decided to call in whilst we were shopping with daughter and baby grand son.Brilliant choice and large plates of food - well worth the visit - we'll be back

Best veggi breakfast I've had in a long time. Nice tasty food in general. The kids love grumpys we usually sit outside if the weathers nice as they have a bouncy castle to keep the kids amused while we wait. Nice helpful staff, reasonably priced and lots to chose from. Only thing is I'm not sure why it's called grumpys as its the opposite!

Ive been coming to cafe grumpy for a year now. The food is good, hot and plenty of it. The only negative thing I can say is that the staff....particular the young student types seem to constantly bicker with each other. Is this why its called cafe grumpy? I dont mind usually, but its becoming a normal routine!

Well worth seeking out Grumpys. We had brunch there, and could not have been more pleased with the service and food. Simply lovely.

Great cafe. Lovely home made food and smaller portions available. If you have small children, there is usually a bouncy castle in the garden at the back so great on sunny days. Really love the Chicken Caesar Salad and the home made scones are really excellent.

Lovely big plate of the traditional English breakfast favourites. This little smart cafe at the end of the arcade in Selsey is like The Tardis.. Plenty of room to sit down but can get busy at peak lunch time.

Always make a point of coming here when we're in the area. Very clean and the food is always good. The pancakes and bacon are amazing! Definitely recommend.

Lovely little cafe which was open on bank holiday Monday though it was quite cold inside the cafe. Menu offers a large range of options: breakfasts (the vegetarian has a glamorgan sausage - always a positive) omelettes, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, bagettes, full meals (roast dinner, macaroni cheese, burger and pizza to name a few!) We ordered at the counter and food was reletively well priced in line with pub food though not a cafe.. Though it's worth baring in mind the cafe only takes cash. When the drinks were brought to our table they were placed down in a random order with no attempt to find who had ordered what so we had to move them around. The two soft drinks were served in warm glasses without ice. A ham sandwich was one item ordered and although being asked what bread was wanted and saying brown it came on white (which was a bit stale). The portions of chips and cheesy chips were lovely and hot and huge - really pleased we ordered these to share. The food was brought out in a random sporadic order and not all together, we were waiting nealy 10 minutes between the first and last dish brought. The cafe was OK but we defiantly think the name of it suits the attitude of the young staff.

This place serves great full English breakfasts. It is a clean and cheerful café serving great value food cooked and served by great staff.On my 3 visits, I've only ever had the full English, but would definitely go back again, as soon as I have done some press-ups and a bit of jogging to get rid of the last one.

Great value and service, good menu choice helpful staff grumpys breakfast is a must, but all food is fresh and well cooked.

My Wife and I went to Grumpys over the weekend as we fancied an all english breakfast. I went for a Grumpys special and my Wife went for a small breakfast and they were both very tasty, nice and hot and plenty of it. It is 2016 now so I think Grumpys need to invest in a PDQ as not many people carry money around, and surely you must be loosing trade by not having one. All that said, lovely food and great service. Many thanks to the Chefs and Staff.

Nipped into Cafe Grumpys for a breakfast treat before we went shopping. Really nicely decorated, I understand it's just been refurbished. Very good choice on the menu, reasonably priced. I had Grumpys small breakfast & my husband had Grumpys large. Really good quality food. Set us up for the day.Will be returning to try some of the other meals on the menu. Staff were nice and friendly, & the cafe was impeccably clean.Looking forward to our next visit to cafe Grumpys

Grumpys is a fantastic cafe. The menu is extensive but the value for money is amazing. The food is of a good quality and comes in big portions. The setting is lovely and the staff are friendly. Not sure where the name comes from but it's certainly not a grumpy place. The only downside is that it is cash only but there is a cash point almost opposite.

This cafe is a must when you visit or live in Selsey, we have been loads of times on our own or with friends and family and they never disappoint! Food is good quality and cooked to perfection. The staff are so friendly and the chefs are great, you will often hear them singing in the background.The place is beautifully clean and accessible to all.I cannot express how much trouble they go to to give you amazing value for money, great service and an overall totally great experience! ❤️Thank you all, so appreciate all your hard work. Have been meaning to try this place out for a while. I have eaten in most of the cafes in Selsey and thought I would give Cafe Grumpys a go. We were not disappointed either. I can honestly say it was the best I have had in Selsey. Nice decor, nice staff and great food. Good bacon, good beans(not the cheep stuff either) and what a joy to get a decent sausage, so many places will let you down and use those horrid cheap sausages, the sort you mostly get at car boots and markets, but not at Cafe Grumpys. So if you have not eaten here for breakfast, you must give it a go. WE will go back and try a lunch and I will tell you about that as well when We do.

Excellent food and service. Had the Grumpy Burger & could not fault it (It's so large)! Very good value for money. Service is also excellent and with a smile, so rare these days. Been here three times this week and food and service is aways spot on. I can highly recommend this Cafe.

Just moved to Selsey went out with some friends and had fabulous food (great portion size :) ) at very reasonable prices will be going back.

I've done some work in Selsey and each time I'm there I go to Grumpys for lunch. Freshly made food from sandwiches to a full meal or even an all day breakfast.Always very yummy.

In my view the best cafe in Selsey. I am a local. Would not eat breakfast with pals anywhere else in Selsey.However took my family & friends who were staying with us (party of 8) there...... ordered the food (over £50) only to find out they did not take debit cards? Had to go over the road to cash point with a queue behind me... its fine to go to CP but you would think a card machine would be a useful addition in this day and age? Friendly staff :-)
