Met family for a Sunday lunch drink, plan was to visit pub with view to holding a family biryhday lunch there in few weeks time. Customer service at bar, dreadfull. You could not hear with the blaring music. Ordered drinks and a coffee. This was put on the bar and had to ask for saucer, milk and sugar, let alone a tray. Disappointed , when meant to be the pub to go to

We went to The Half Moon with friends for an evening meal. We selected off the a la carte menu, which is short (about five choices per course) but interesting. The wine list is decent and not prohibitively expensive. The food was very high quality and beautifully presented. Portions are quite small, but bigger eaters can bulk things up with side dishes. We had sides of fries and hispi cabbage, and both were reasonably substantial. Service was efficient and friendly. This was the first time in a few years that we had tried The Half Moon, and they delivered the best quality meal that we have had locally outside of Michelin starred establishments. We will certainly be going back soon.

3 of us had the tasting menu. A lovely pub atmosphere and the staff were great. The food was really excellent and beautifully cooked. However the portions were so small after 6 courses we were still hungry and we all had to make cheese on toast when we got home. Not great after spending £270 on dinner.

What a fabulous experience. Wonderful food in the most pleasant environment. Smart yet casual. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Portions are smallish but so perfect as you can really enjoy each course and delight in the flavours. It is exactly what we love. Quality over quantity. Really talented chef and team combining local produce where possible. They have created something special. Excellent value for very fine food.

If you want fine dining, and all that goes with it, this is the place for you. The food was flavoursome and nicely presented, but the portions were small. Rich sauces dominated. The staff were pleasant but a little uptight, and the hospitality didn’t feel genuine at times, especially when it was “too late” to have a desert. That was resolved but only after an embarrassing exchange which left a sour taste. The wine was excellent but I would have preferred to have the bottle left on the table. It irritated having to wait for a top up. The espresso martini was lovely, even though the coffee beans were absent from the presentation. Details matter when you charge top dollar and when your hosts feel so strongly about the poor service they don’t want to pay the service charge it tells the story. It almost feels like you should be grateful…

I don’t often write reviews on here but felt compelled to take the time to recommend The Half Moon after the absolutely excellent lunch we had this weekend. From the outset, the service was welcoming, charming and friendly. The lead front of house manager in particular was superb, explaining for us full details on all aspects of the menu requested. Whilst the menu isn’t large, what is on offer is exceptional for pub food. Presentation and taste of the dishes was top notch and as as a couple who eat out a lot, the food is head and shoulders above most other gastro pubs we have eaten in. We ordered the chicken and steak for mains, and tiramisu and chocolate fondant for dessert and couldn’t fault a thing. The garden setting is lovely with a covered area, wine list great and the service overall was very impressive. It was clear that the pub had not overbooked themselves to maintain a high standard. We look forward to returning.

Nicely done interior. Good food. Rude Service.A bar staff member rudely responded to me on two occasions making my stay unpleasant. When I asked about my fries order after 20 minutes of waiting, I got a following response "did you pay for it...(yes)...you order is number 30 so you will have to wait a bit longer!". One minute later fries arrived at the table. When 23:00h was approaching, a bar staff member approached my table, gathered food I was still eating without asking and said "it is finished" . I was left trying to understand the situation so I approached the bar asking about their closing time. I was than informed that the pub was closing at 23:30. The rude bar staff could have politely inform me that they were closing along the lines of 'excuse me, it is just a gentle reminder that we are closing in 30 minutes' but instead I got rude " it is finished" regrettably, I will not be returning. there are many nicely done pubs around that provide much better experience and experience is what matters most when you are out for a pleasant time

So lovely typical British pub in a really nice village doing a great job with excellent food and service. We traveled around an hour to try this pub for Sunday lunch and were really pleased we made the effort.Firstly the front of house team were just brilliant and it wasn’t just one person but everyone. Great welcome, attentive friendly service throughout, nothing wasto much effort. This must come from recruiting good people but also whoever is running front of house but do a great job by leading by example. For me the service is as just about as important if not more important than the food. The food thankfully pretty much matched the service so big well done to the kitchen. We both had roasts as it was a Sunday - beef and pork, both were exceptionally good with great selection of vegetables, stunning roast potatoes, extra gravy. If I was to have one slight negative I thought the portion of meat was little on the small side but that said I wasn’t feeling hungry at the end of the meal.Desserts were really good and my wife had an espresso martini after dessert which was excellent.I really hope the team here continue to do well and have great success, they really deserve it.

Enjoy trips out to different Sussex pubs for lunch with my wife. Not busy today but quite slow service. I ordered the local scotch egg for starters followed by fish pie and salmon for my wife. I was surprised when my main meal arrived before my starter. When I queried this, the guy serving just commented “I’ve only got 2 hands”. Not the response I expected !!Then the scotch egg appeared. I did feel very uncomfortable with this mans attitude. My wife said send it back and was very annoyed with his attitude but I didn’t send it back. Food was very tasty but not much veg with the salmon. Fish pie was good. Then finally we were overcharged for the salmon when the bill came. Apologies and the service charge removed by the manager but not a great experience today. Looking forward to this visit but finished being rather disappointed. Will we return. Probably not.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Had this place in my radar for over two years before an opportunity presented itself to actually experience it, being almost half way between London and the south coast where my friend and I were respectively travelling from for a lunch catch-up. The booking in advance online was easy. We were the first customers for the lunchtime period and was given the choice of either going straight to our table or having a drink in the bar first. We chose the latter and after choosing from a great selection of drinks we were invited to take a seat as the drinks would be brought over to us. Once seated we were joined by the two house dogs; the little one first who brought its bed to our table and then got comfy therein and then the black Labrador. The member of staff who was looking after us realised this had happened as she brought our drinks to us and apologised, offering to move them away but we found it funny, cute and felt privileged they had both decided to join us (it was as though the dogs felt they had a duty to be hosts to the venue’s guests) so we said there was no need to move them as they were just content with sitting near us. We viewed the menu whilst having a drink in the bar and our order was taken from this point with us being invited to take our table in the restaurant just ahead of our first course being brought to the table. All courses were excellent as was the service. Price wise it may be viewed as a little on the high side but despite this being a pub the presentation and quality of food, together with the level of service is more ‘fine dining’ than ‘pub grub’ so this is understandable. The environment is welcoming and comfortable; not only were we the first customers to arrive but also the last to leave and didn’t feel rushed to do so. The location is an idyllic country village and we were there on a dry autumn day; could’ve easily stayed longer and most certainly intend to return.

Called twice to confirm vegan and children options, was told not a problem, however when we arrived a limited menu was on offer only, no children or vegan options. After over an hour of waiting (kids eating their arms off) in which several tables were served and had finished before us, the vegan meal of grapes, parsnips on some curly kale was served and although they tried to accommodate the children with eggs and bacon, pork belly and a fried whole egg didn't really cut the mustard. Talking of mustard when Dijon was asked for, English was given instead. When we tried to have a discussion the bill was reduced automatically and a statement of 'we are two rosettes you know' with no apology given. I'm sorry to give a negative review but if you can't say sorry for a mistake and remain arrogant whilst getting the simple things wrong I am compelled to write a negative review even though I am loathed to do so.

This is a difficult one really. It was Saturday lunch with friends. We all wanted it to be great and it’s certainly a pleasant location and building but when we arrived in the bar we were ignored by bar staff for several minutes - hey ho, I’m sure they were doing important stuff. We went through to the dining room and so far so good. The starters were ok-ish but not special. One of the main courses (Cod) was disappointing and another (guinea fowl) was not very pleasant (texture and taste). The shepherd’s pie was better. The suites arrived in stages; crumble for one first and after about 10 minutes the sundae (very disappointing) and two ginger parkins (inedible). The latter were taken off the bill. Portion size was very small throughout.

The desserts were also tasty but the deconstructed lemon cheesecake with caramac (reminded me of my youth) was rather odd with not enough lemon. One of our party was excited at the thought of a knickerbocker glory (he is 75, so remembered it from years ago) but his face was a picture of disappointment when it arrived. A small bowl with sorbet, popcorn and not much else! However, the waitress was delightful and the pub is pretty.

AS a chef in the area I had high hopes.......alas I was disappointed. Upon arrival we had our drinks order taken quickly but had a long wait for our food order and a really long wait for some bread and olives which when they did arrive my husband devoured so fast as he was really hungry at this point. I had courgette flower to start with which was ok, quite bland and at nearly £10 for two flowers overpriced but it was the main course of £22 lamb fillet that really annoyed me. Four of the tiniest thinnest slices off a fillet you could give with an extremely salty thick jus which tasted of reduced soy sauce......literally three mouthfuls and that course was over. The vegetables were nice that we ordered as a side dish ( thank goodness we did as otherwise we would have left even hungrier) upon arrival at home ( we didn’t want to attempt dessert as we had been at restaurant for two hours by the time we finished our main) i promptly made myself a snack as I was still really hungry.

We were looking forward to our visit booked for a celebration. Beautiful building and village setting. We were welcomed pleasantly and came for a Sunday lunch. But, there needs to be a roasting about the food. We had read some good reviews but frankly the meals we were served were very poor for the cost indeed. We all thought the same. The roast beef; the presentation of bringing the meal with the meat on top of everything else was peculiar. The meat was tough and not even cooked to our order in terms of medium rare/ well done etc. It was chewy, fatty and lacked flavour. We had a fabulous Sunday lunch at Indigo Worthing that would put it to shame. There was one small bit of over cooked green vegetable hiding in the gravy. The roast potatoes were not crisp and not much of them. I’m known as the best roast potato chef in the world and boy does someone need a lesson! There was an acceptable Yorkshire and the gravy was ok.

Beef starter went down very well and the soup was good. Fish pie ok too. Our wine was left on the other side of the dining room and with no one around to top up glasses, it was a bit annoying. So, place great, food ok, staff...need to do better.

Now under new management, the pub serves excellent food. The ales are still good. It gives a warm country auberge experience. It is not cheap but it is worth what you pay. One of the better gastro pubs in the area. We'll be back.

This grade II building is just lovely in a great setting. We had Sunday lunch on Easter Sunday and was not disappointed. The weather was lovely so we dined in the garden which had such a lovely atmosphere and very relaxing. My husband and I had the roast which was very good the beef was cooked to perfection and the roast potatos where fresh and crispy which makes a change to the usual frozen ones you normally get in a lot of restaurants. The staff were excellent, very attentive, friendly and always had a welcoming smile. We would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We decided to visit the pub on Easter Monday as the sun was shining and we had heard mixed reviews about the pub and decided to try it for ourselves. We sat in the back garden which is pretty but needs a little bit of attention to make it truly outstanding. There was a speaker for music which we found to be a bit too loud so moved to the front garden.

This pub gets better and better. 4 of us came for the curry night last week and I think this was the best curry any of us have eaten for a long time. Butter chicken and the fish curry were outstanding. Great staff, the front of house girl was charming and knowledgeable the barman gorgeous according to our friends wife.

Really loved the atmosphere and deco in this beautiful pub! We were given some lovely homemade bread to start with and then all had a main course. My mum and I both chose the macaroni cheese and it was absolutely delicious - so nice that we have kept mentioning it for a few days since! The creamy sauce and mushrooms with the pasta were fab. We will definitely visit again.

First visit with friends and immediately on arrival, the friendliness from Emily was apparent. The restaurant has a very nice ambience - very nicely appointed but not too over the top. Drinks were ordered and quickly arrived followed by taking our food orders. The food arrived in good time, the starters were all lovely although the portion size for the crayfish starter and ricotta ravioli mains were a bit small. The steaks were of an excellent size and cooked exactly as requested. Emily was attentive throughout and happy to give suggestions as to local wine tours and events. On the whole, an excellent choice for a good lunch.

I would have liked to have given a review of the meal. I booked a meal for six people to celebrate my husbad's birthday some six weeks ago. My parents in law travelled from Wales to attend. I telephoned the Half Moon this morning to confirm the booking and they have no record of the booking. Very poor administration. I can't recommend this establishment at all. I am not likely to try to book again.

We are currently visiting the area and this pub was recommended to us by the people who own the place we are staying at. We brought our 2 year old daughter for an evening meal. The service we received was excellent and the waitress was very accommodating towards our daughter which was hugely appreciated. The children's meal was fantastic. She enjoyed the pulled pork and was refreshing to see a wholesome children's menu. Our meals were superb. I highly recommend the Duck whilst my husband raved about his beef cheek. We equally enjoyed our desserts. We used to live in Midhurst and have often commented on how we are spoilt with good restaurants in the area. We will now be adding this restaurant to our list of favourite places.

My husband and I were staying in the local area and booked a table for New Years Eve. We were greeted with a lovely warm welcome and were asked if we wanted a drink first before we sat down to our meal as we were a little early. Wood burner in the bar was glowing beautifully. When ready we entered into the restaurant area. The decor and feel was trendy with a modern country and cosy twist. We had a three course meal. All was cooked to perfection including the fillet. Very tasty indeed. We then went back into the bar for more drinks and went into the new year with fun, singing and laughter. Met the owners too which was lovely. Overall great visit and can't wait to return. Highly recommend to others.

This is my local and I’d definitely recommend it. The place has a really homely feel to it with nice log fires in winter. The atmosphere is always good and the staff are always chatty, friendly, attentive and polite. I hadn’t got round to eating here since the new owner took over but glad I finally did. We are here Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and both times the food was amazing!

This was our second visit with friends. Staff very friendly and efficient. Lovely atmosphere. However we were disappointed by the quantity (not quality) of the food from our previous visit. The menu was very limited and even more so for myself as I am gluten and lactose intolerant. On our previous visit the chef went out of his way to accomodate me. Also on our last visit we were given extra dishes of vegetables. My roast beef dinner had two small roast potatoes, three very small chunks of carrot and a teaspoon of red cabbage. We had all travelled long distances to meet at your restaurant and we all arrived home hungry.

A birthday dinner at one of my favourite restaurants was most disappointing. Whilst the service from the waiting staff was good the food was poor. There was a very limited choice of main courses with no red meat on the menu. Moreover our food arrived luke warm. The dishes were confused and our fish over cooked. The pork belly having thick layers of undercooked was unappetising.

We have visited here a few times & thought it would be a good place to celebrate my partner’s birthday with the family. However this proved to be a wrong decision. We entered the bar and had to wait while the bar man was filling water bottles and asked whether we had a table booked before he offered us a drink! Not a good start!

I had the pleasure to come with my husband for a nice relaxed bottle of rose yesterday. We have visited several times in the past but not for a while so I was amazed that we had been recognised and the maitre 'de remembered what wine we had.We did not eat on this occasion but have had items from the snack menu in past and have found them delicious and quite original from the usual bar snack you find.I cannot believe the 2 previous comments surely you cannot be upset when you have not had the courtesy to phone and add another person to the table as for being very influential in the restaurant business i would say you sound rather full of your own self importence having run a restaurant myself i would ask you not to return customers like you we can all do without!! We however will certainly be returning and give it a bit thumbs up

Beautiful sunny autumn day, arrived for an early lunch. First impressions were good, greeted warmly and professionally, offered the choice of going straight to our table or a drink in the bar. We chose the bar, a comfortable space with a good selection of places to take in the very pleasant surroundings.

Although they’ve faced a few days of closure it doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the food they serve, food was done beautifully and the burgers cooked very well. Generous portion sizes and very very thick and tasty milkshakes I will definitely be returning. Also to note the tables and kitchen are kept quite clean and there was wasn’t much mess on the floor round the crowded tables which is a good sign the place is being looked after well.

The home made food really is tasty and quite different so you should find it interesting. A nice cafe to supplement a visit to Westdean gardens next door. Nice big pot of tea thank you. You can enjoy the garden out the back if the weather lets you.
