Cafe Babbs in Torbay

Quirky little cafe, lots of Queen Elizabeth II paraphanalia. Serves typical greasy spoon style food and Thai food. Has a little Queen display in the back.

Great restaurant run by a Thai family. We only discovered this cafe a few days before we were due to come home, but managed two breakfasts. Reasonably priced, and cooked to perfection (crispy bacon really was crispy!). Sitting outside in St Marychurch Fore Street was delightful, and good to see so many locals enjoying morning coffee, and a chat. Scheduled to try their authentic Thai food on our next visit. Can't wait.

We live locally and pop in on a regular basis, always a warm welcome. Nothing is too much trouble for Lulu and the team. I personally love the Thai red curry and the traditional breakfasts. Everything is great in a home from home atmosphere.

Wonderful place to eat. Really friendly service. Varied menu good home cooking. Thai food looks good will try next time I'm in the area. Very reasonable prices.

Quiet greeting and sat on a table of choice and quickly looked at menu while server stood by us waiting for us to be ready. Took order and the drinks came out quickly and food not long after. Was expecting a little more of the mushrooms and beans but it was still warm and tasty! Cheap as well not too bad prices so all around okay. Music could’ve been a bit better but alright otherwise

Had a wander around St Mary church a lovely part of Torquay noticed The Queen Elizabeth was still open at 4.30 teatime so ordered two fishcakes, chips and mushy peas never saw the Thai menu I picked up the other menu with pancakes, cottage pie, fish and chips anyway the fishcakes chips and mushy peas came out a good meal large golden fishcakes enjoyed it but couldn't leave the cafe without trying a Thai green curry so ordered one there made fresh when it arrived it was spectacular the best one I've had hands down the chicken was lovely and tender with a cracking coconut sauce fantastic value 100% I would go back again

Great food , dog friendly , lattes are amazing very welcoming , nothing is a problem , my teenage austisic daughter feels comfortable here and always ask can we go lu lu’s , best cafe in st Mary church , definitely going to be regulars here , plenty of space inside and out , made lots of new friends here , I would recommend 100%

Very friendly owners and waiting staff. Offer very good reasonably priced breakfasts including vegetarian options. They go out of their way to accommodate. Situated in the beautiful old fashioned St Marychurch precinct near Bygones Museum and definitely worth a visit.

Cafe babbs Aka now the Queen Elizabeth is Probably one of the best Cafes in Babbacombe, love the Mocha Coffee every time I go in the staff are helpful and brilliant The All day breakfasts are also to die for !

I recently visited Babbs for the first time since the new owners took over and renamed it, and was pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly, courteous and attentive. I decided to depart from my usual full English and sample some Thai dishes. I chose the Pork Dumplings and veggie spring rolls. The portions were generous, and both dishes were delicious and reasonably priced. My only disappointment was learning that they close at 4.30 pm every day. I'd really like to order a takeaway some nights.

By chance we came to this cafe today, as we were in St Marychurch. The Thai food was absolutely fabulous, stir fry, Thai Green Curry, spring Rolls and Thai Crackers, we will most definitely be back, the staff were so attentive,

After a long morning sight seeing we just wanted something quick to eat. I.e. Sandwich, Panini, Soup etc. The place was admittedly busy but 45mins for soup and sandwiches is ridiculous. The order taker seemed vacant and the two Thai lady owners very aggressive and rude and finished every sentence with "Darlin!". I asked for a spoon for the soup and the answer was shouted " I GET IT DARLIN!!! YOU WAIT!!!" with a shake of the head to follow. Whilst we were there we saw a number of people ask where their food was. In conclusion COMPLETE AGGRESSIVE CHAOS DARLIN!!!

I would have be very lonely this Christmas if cafe Babb's had not open for local people to have a great lunch for only 19.95 each the food was outstanding and the staff made you feel like you was part of a family .

Very good value for money. Only £19.95 per head for three course traditional British turkey lunch. Nearly all ingredients sourced locally so top marks for that. Roasted vegetable soup was excellent, main course was plenty full and as advertised, Pudding choice of Pan’s homemade cheesecake...

Another 5 out of 5 for a lovely place run my amazing staff! We don’t even know the owner but she gave us and our children Christmas presents. Delicious food and highly recommend.

This cafe remains open despite it being a national lockdown. They don’t socially distance and they don’t appear to adhere to Covid safe premises stipulations.

I would not recommend a visit to this cafe, as they are not running a COVID 19 safe premises. One member of staff who took our order at the table did not wear a face covering or shield. She did not social distance from anyone...

We had an amazing lunch here. Everyone was very friendly. Food was amazing and cannot fault the place. The systems in place to safeguard everyone against covid19 is absolutely top. Well done to the team. Definitely a gem worth visiting.

Great value but a big HOWEVERThe food in this place was great value and very tasty, we had the lasagne with chips and salad.There are a lot of covid safety measures in place which would suggest that they are doing all they can, they make sure they get you to gel your hands before entering , they have screens up separating you from passing customers , they also have protective screens up over the till.HOWEVER this is all thrown out of the window by one staff member (overweight), who basically needs a hygiene class, walks around swapping a cleaning cloth to her left hand from her right, then carrying a plate out to be served to a customer with the right hand without washing , I saw her wiping her face , wiping on her skirt, reaching under and adjusting her bra strap and then again picking up a plate and serving to a customer. Absolutely clueless. Only upside was she was eating her dinner when we got served ours, else there would of been a whole different conversation taking place.This is the reason for my 2 star score , the other 3 members of staff , one of which was the owner I believe were very conscious and their cleanliness and attitude was apparent. The food was nice as said before, but in today’s climate there’s no excuse for this type of careless lack of hygiene.

We have been here for a veggie bfast, vegan bfast and meat bfast. We have also been for lunch. Absolutely beautiful food, very clean and the team are so lovely and helpful. We will be back and 100% recommend.

Our visit was four adults and a 3 year old and we were seated straight away, menus were brought. We then had to catch a member of staff to place our order.We didn't order anything complicated or full meals yet after waiting for half an hour we went to enquire if it was on its way as we had timed tickets for a local attraction. Our 3 year old had been getting impatient for some time and asking loudly where his milkshake was but there was no effort to bring this ahead of the rest of the order.When we did enquire, the food appeared instantly. This, along with the fact that the toasted sandwiches were not very hot, males us think our food had been prepared but we had been forgotten.The food itself was fine but no better than average.

We popped here for a breakfast myself and my partner.They were very welcoming and super friendly with our dog.I had the small veggie breakfast and my partner had the English.It was very yummy.Nice Quorn sausage/mushrooms/Hash brown/egg/Toast/beans and just £3-85.Great value.

On the pedestrianised street at St Marychurch, close to Babbacombe and the Model Village, this cafe does its job perfectly well. Friendly staff, good coffee and a huge (too big!) piece of cake.

This is a very good traditional and lincenced café in St Marychurch. There is a Thai team here and they are a delight. Apart from the usual café fare they have a small Thai menu which is also available for takeaway, a facility that was until now sadly lacking in St Marychurch. As I anticipated it was excellent. Lulu mentioned some customers said it was too hot so warn her to tone it down if you so wish. I asked for Thai hot and, wow, was it good! This is our new go to place for Asian takeaway. As a café they do close at 5PM so order for collection and ping it when you're ready later after a pint!Curiously the menu is not displayed in the window which is somewhat shortsighted don't you think so I have encouraged them to do so. If there is something not on the menu you want, give them 24 hours notice and they will oblige!Wonderful.

I read some of the other reviews that are speaking in glowing terms. I didn't feel particularly welcome, the food was only average and although it is not far away, I can't say I want to go again. Perhaps I was having a bad day!

What a lovely little find! We had a walk around st Marychurch for a day out. We came across cafe babbs as the cafe looked clean and spacious we thought we would try it. We only had a coffee as we’d had lunch already. I’m going to return to try some of the Thai lunch specials they do! Lovely friendly staff.

I'd walked past Babbs on a number of occasions and one day decided to pop in for breakfast and what a GREAT decision that was.!!I ordered a pot of tea and the all day english breakfast (bacon,egg, sausage,beans,mushrooms,hashbrowns and toast) and it arrived quickly and piping hot..Didnt last very long as it was so fresh and tasty..If you want a decent sized freshly cooked, hot fried breakfast then look no further.. With a friendly,local style atmosphere and great prices Babbs won't be beaten..

If you only want a cup of tea/coffee, or a full meal, the cafe is a good place to go. Fresh, home cooked food and great staff. Not expensive and beer/wine etc available. Excellent place for meeting friends. Wheelchair accessible.

Been in Babs cafe had vegetarian breakfast it was really nice and well cooked be back in soon cafe is clean and well looked after

Stopped here after visiting Bygones. Asked for a breakfast bap which I was told wasn’t available after 11:30 so asked if I could have a bap which contained the same things to be told they only do baps with individual ingredients for example a bacon bap, a sausage bap or an egg bap but not all three together? So forgot that idea. Drinks were then served but there was no sugar etc at the table so had to go and get it off another table myself. The lady who served us had no idea about customer service.

This cafe is how all cafes should be - good food at reasonable prices in nice clean surroundings and with friendly efficient staff.We enjoyed our vegetarian breakfasts so much we came back for lunch later in the week and the food was just as good - I recommend the omlettes and the home made chips!

A group of us called into Cafe Babbs for a lunchtime snack waitress service we had sandwiches generous fillings with good portion of salad. The sandwiches were freshly made on lovely fresh brown bread I had a peppermint tea very good excellent food and very friendly service. Well worth a vist.

Food was delicious as usual! Unfriendly waitress who never smiles. Also heard two waitresses talking (not nicely!) about customers! Very unprofessional. Let my whole experience down. What a shame as everything else was lovely.

It was quite busy, but the waitress came to take our order right away. We both ordered the brunch bacon,sausage,egg beans and chips. It was hot tasty and lovely to get homemade chips. It's a lovely cheap and cheerful place to eat with tasty quality food and if the weather nice there are a few tables outside.

A hidden gem at St Marychurch precinct, always good food and various choices, always busy so that tells you its good all round

We visited here for lunch on a busy Saturday in October. The staff were very pleasant and the service was prompt. The lasagne and fish and chips were well cooked at a reasonable price. The café and toilets were spotless. A good place to eat!

It's spotlessly clean the staff are friendly lovely coffee and a cake for the adults and the kids had cheesy chips. All were excellent and the cheesy chips were propper chips and the cheese was a well flavoured mature. I can't recommend this place enough a lovely old lady said they were the best in town and on the evidence of today I would have to agree. Well done Babb's!

We was in the area and we wanted a snack we popped into the near by town had a look and came across Babbs cafe so we had 2 toasts a wrap a panini a small chips enough for 2 each and a drink each just thought it was expensive over £27 but the service was nice

Called at café Babbs Twice during our stay in Torquay. On both occasions had a really good choice of food . Excellent staff always smiling and courteous and nothing is to much trouble. the sandwiches are made fresh to order,tasted lovely. Pot of tea was missing a tea bag but had a laugh! cheese toasties, tasted lovely. Victoria Cake, tasted lovely. everyone go into café babbs you wont be disappointed. reasonably priced too.

We enjoyed a fine piece of battered cod with home made chips and mushy peas. Well-priced, served within 20 minutes and straight from the kitchen. There is outdoor seating but we chose a window table with a great view of the goings-on in this genteel Fore Street. St Marychurch, just near Babbacombe. Recommended.

Ate here with a work colleague to celebrate the last working day before Christmas. I would normally have had a breakfast but fancied a change so opted for a Ham and cheese omelette. So glad I did - it was as good an omelette as I've tasted in a very long time! The cheese was cooked right through it as opposed to just in one place or added afterwards. The chips were OK but I've had better and the baked beans complimented it well. Lovely banana milkshake too. All in all, a very enjoyable meal.

We had a very nice light breakfast at Cafe Babbs in St Marychurch, Torquay. We didn't have any complaints at all about the service, which we thought was friendly, polite and informal, just as we would expect from a cafe or coffee shop.

A nice privately run coffee shop with pleasant and jovial staff. They didn't know what English Breakfast Tea was, though.

It was a cold rainy day and we had decided to go to Babbs. There were several other cafes within a stones throw. The waitress whom served us was quite impolite towards us and the other customers she served.

I have used this cafe a few times and have to say the breakfasts are good. However, I recently thought I would try a different meal. I had liver and onions with mashed potatoes and peas. It was absolutely awful. Whoever cooks liver and onions in an Italian style tomato sauce? I couldn't eat it. It wasn't advertised as having a tomato sauce and I don't think it was wrong to assume it would have gravy if it had a sauce. The attitude of the staff is friendly enough when you order but it stops there. Nobody asked if the meal was ok, either during or when paying (despite the fact that they collected an uneaten meal). Neither did anyone thank us. Had someone asked it would have given me the opportunity to say that I was unhappy with the meal. I didn't want to complain, it was cooked ok, just an awful recipe. They have lost our custom.This is the second time I have been displeased with this cafe. They were unhelpful in adjusting their menu previous when I asked if they could do a smaller breakfast than advertised. They refused even though they had no customers and we didn't stay.

We were a party of 7 and were quickly served with our meals and drinks and it was all served quickly and promptly and very reasonably priced.

You could easily walk past babbs without knowing how lovely it is. Its nothing really new but its just a lovely, friendly café in the heart of st marychurch. The food is fresh and its good value for money.

Called here for lunch and really enjoyed it. I had ham egg and chips and it was really enjoyable and reasonable priced. As I don't eat big meals they let me have the children's meal at £3.75. Would definitely recommend this place.

This was a first for us as the lady serving made a point of bringing my 4 year old's meal out before the adult meal, something that could be done in a lot more restaurants to save parents a lot of stress! The food was clearly freshly cooked, tasted delicious and the server was very friendly and nothing seemed like it was too much trouble! Will definitely be going back again another day!

We have eaten in most of the cafes within st. Marychurch but never tried breakfast at Cafe Babbs, so today we decided to give it a try and very glad we did, breakfast was tasty and very reasonable priced, I was able to have a poached egg and plum tomatoes with no problems at all.Very friendly girls. Had our first breakfast here and will definitely be returning, the girls were very helpful and chatty. The food was tasty well cooked and reasonably priced. Don't normally write reviews but after my experience in "Cafe Babbs" today I felt I had to. I came in with my little brother this morning as we were "killing time" and he really wanted a hot drink. Immediately we were welcomed warmly by the fantastic staff they have there. We had two very generous and tasty hot chocolates for a very good price. The staff at Cafe Babbs provided some of the best customer service I've experienced in Torbay and it was completely to our surprise! I urge you to check this place out, you won't be disappointing. And in it's fantastic location you don't have to go far. Thanks :)
