Poor offering of food. Went for lunch and only food on offer was cakes or crisps. Had a coffee on the terrace overlooking the river then went looking for somewhere offering proper food for lunch

Wanted somewhere peaceful for coffee and cake couldn't have chosen better. The cafe was fairly quiet but we chose to sit outside. The two ladies serving were friendly and helpful. My daughter loved the cake she chose which apparently is locally made, I chose a tea cake and was astonished to get plenty of butter with it without needing to ask for me ( I usually find when choosing a teacake cafes are extremely stingy with the butter) . Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here and was reasonably priced.

The theatre was easy to reach, parking was a problem, but the theatre was well laid out, and the staff were pleasant. The food offering was a bit lame, just coffee and wrapped cakes being the only offering here. The concert was good, although there was supposed to be a meet and greet afterward but big-time Arthur didn’t put in an appearance at all, so we left before the cleaners came in.

Visited sat afternoon with my grandson before a show. Cafe was quiet when I ordered my burger and fries but got busier as time passed..and more time passed. After 20 mins+ I asked (politely) a member of staff how much longer my order might be. After telling me how busy they were and there were people before me she then asked if I would rather it served before it was cooked!!! She then commented to a colleague about a woman complaining about the wait. As I returned to my table my meal majically turned up. Whoever is the manager, you need to get your staff some customer service training.

We had chai tea lattes here when we came to the centre to see a Bonsai tree exhibition. The person who served us hadn't made a chai tea latte before and was clearly very nervous about it, but she was polite and friendly. There is a nice view over the river, so somewhere I'd recommend if you don't fancy the chain restaurants in Friar's Walk.

Went to singalong Calamity Jane yesterday. Booked afternoon tea for myself and my cousin. Cost £15 each for 4 cheese finger sandwiches & 4 ham. I scone. Clotted cream & Jam two tiny Quiches & 2 or 3 tiny cakes. A tiny pot of tea per person which was eventually served at the very end, after we had eaten! Service was extremely disorganised although the staff were very nice! Very disappointed!

Ten of us (7 adults, 3 little children) visited on New Year's Eve for the matinee performance of Aladdin (which was excellent - this is a review of the cafe, which wasn't). We were among the first there, just after 12 noon. We placed our orders shortly thereafter or rather tried to - the staff seemingly didn't know what they had in and kept on having to check whether they had stock of whatever menu selection we wanted. I ended up having to go for my fifth choice - which would have been frustrating if we were there at the end of the day but we were the at the very start. My third or fourth choice was the burger (I didn't mind whether it was the beef or the chicken burger) - I was told they were off the menu as they didn't have any burger rolls! The staff also seemed to be put out every time I asked for a different substitute menu choice and then didn't seem to know where to find it on the till. My brother in law was told that they didn't have a child's dish of cheese and broccoli, despite it being one of the children's menu options. (They didn't have menus at the till so we had to go and get menus to show them). To make matters far worse, they'd lost his order - so their food wasn't delivered to the table until after 1pm! Even then it was only because he'd had to ask/chase a number of times. Next time we'll choose a restaurant in town- where the staff are pleasant, polite, knowledgeable and cheerful and where they have enough food in the kitchen to enable customers to enjoy their preferred choice of meal. Sadly the restaurant at the Riverfront was an utter shambles, with dour, unapologetic and seemingly clueless staff and management.

Popped into The Riverfront to grab something quick to eat and drink whilst waiting for a coach. Only one person serving with a large order to fulfill, so had to wait a while, another member of staff came out from the kitchen serving food saw me waiting and toddled back into the kitchen. There was no acknowledgement to say I'll be with you shortly or sorry about the delay. When the lady serving had finished with the order she then proceeded to do some paperwork. Another customer came in and the staff member from the kitchen came out and asked who was next please, even though she had seen me waiting previously, so not only did I have this other customer push in, I was also blatantly ignored by the staff. Needless to say I was so annoyed and disgusted by the lack of service that I walked out and I will not be returning.

Visited here as part of the Kew sponsored community garden that meet in Tuesday's. A really welcoming group that I would recommend supporting having gone along with my sister and newphews. A clean seating area and views of the river it is a peaceful cafe serving the usual cafe products with a bonus of herbs and vegetables bein used from the community garden when in season. Cheaper than the chain's and just as lovely this is a little gem opposite the new bus station and perfect for anyone using the natonal express stops which are just outside. There is a lovely little galery on display and lots of shows at the theatre which I hadn't realised. In my opinon, this is a cheap eat not mid range as detailed. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Amazed more locals don't use this to support local business. Will always return when visiting family in the area

A lovely setting for morning coffee where the service is good and you are not rushed to move on. Beautiful setting and enhanced by the art exhibition that was on.

Booked a 12:00 childen's cinema performance and needed a quick lunch. Clean, spacious and airy area with great views of the river. Varied menu of breakfast and lunch choices including a good child's menu. I had a panini which comes with a salad while my 5 yr old grandson quickly polished off his cheese and beans on toast ..followed by delicious lemon icing sponge cake. My only question would have been whether the coffee could have been slightly hotter. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. I would go back again. One helpful comment to the management is that there is no indication of the Riverfront building if you are coming from the direction of Kingsway parking so it is tricky to find for the first time. There should be large letters on that side of the building and also a safe area to cross the road.

Although I am loathed to report anything negative about the riverfront .. I am really disappointed at the café there , because we use the theatre on a regular basis .. but I suppose it much be said in the hope that it will be improved .. it is wonderful sat by the river in the lead up to a show , or sat inside taking a coffee , wine or beer .. but it would be even more so , if , a menu of affordable tasty meals were offered to the customer to set the evening off with a bang .. and even more so , with many eateries , in the newly opened friars walk .. the food offered is , at present very expensive , and dare I say it , boring .. we ate there just once , and using the riverfront all year round I think that is so sad .. as I initially said , the café is being wasted the way it is because the ambience , and staffs friendliness , is second to none .. the food needs a butt kicking .. BUT , it could be much better .. sorry riverfront but it had to be said

Why do I always fancy a coffee but don't feel hungry enough to eat cake! I love cake. I bake special refined sugar-free goodies at home but am always tempted by the gorgeous gateaux, rich chocolate brownies and sticky flapjacks in the cafe showcases. So I'll be back to the Riverfront, not only to watch a performance but to check out its cafe further. And hopefully eat cake.

I went to the Riverfront recently and the panini was far too expensive and bland. To add to the insult, I had to pay an extra £1 for a spoonfl od coleslaw (bringing the total of a mug of tea and a tuna melt panini with a side of coleslaw to £7.50). Just not impressed. The tinned tuna was very dry, the coleslaw looked nice but lacked flavour. The service is never ever friendly and warm, it's quite cold. I think that they need to improve on their customer service and add seasoning to their food. It might be a sandwich but the serious lack of flavour doesn't warrant such a high price! I really don't begruge paying alot if the food was outstanding. Also lack of imagination with fillings! I almost fell asleep during my lunch!

The best location for a coffee in Newport, however the atmosphere is rather cold and school canteen like but the view of the river makes up for it. Coffee is good but the cafe could do with some cosier seating areas to make it more intimate.

I was only customer there when I visited on a Sunny Monday afternoon and settled for their pasta salad and a coke which was fine by any standard.Nice view across the river on a hot sunny day but it seems a shame the staff were having not much to do with a lack of customers, Maybe its different on weekends.

Had a beautiful spinach and butternut squash pastry thingy with excellent salad. Very reasonably priced. Good friendly service. Interesting view of the river. There were some lovely looking home made cakes too, but we resisted them today. Would definitely recommend as a good place for a lunch.

Nice place more for a chat and to absorb an unusual atmosphere sitting above the river but it gave a different perspective. Found it a good place to chill out and do some reflecting. Food was a bit overpriced and for me probably a bit too healthy. Good if you want or are on a diet lol! Not somewhere I would choose to spend my money for a meal but more for a working lunch.

Very useful just before a show as it opens at 6pm. The food is OK, sometimes with a 'special board'. The Cafe area is in the main entrance hall and is more of an open cafe bar than restuarant, but perfectly adequate. The Cafe is only open when there is a performance.

Expensive place for pre-comedy/theatre drinks which is unfortunate as everyone does like abit of a tipple. And the whole room is a white open space yes there is views of the river but its let down by the whole room being so bright u cannot see past the reflection

We enjoyed a very pleasant meal with friendly service. The wine was also good. There are good veggie options as well as some delicious cakes for dessert. Although the surroundings were a little too minimalist for my taste it was great to be able to enjoy some good food before watching a film.

Ambience is as important as customer service, Asda needs to spend some money on a refit it will pay off. Service and food were good.

I was going to be treated to a birthday lunch. I ordered the fish and chips, my dining companion ordered the hunters chicken. When it came my fish had more batter than fish, and the fish itself was dry. The chips were hard. The hunters chicken was also dry, it needed a sauce but none was visible. The whole experience tells me to avoid the place in future.

The shop floor staff are great, they just need more of them, two weeks before Christmas and there is one person trying to run the deli counter and the hot food counter, no wonder she was stressed
