Best kept secret in Chester. Lovely filter coffee and cake. Amazing space. I also had a tuna melt panini which was lovely and very friendly service.

Basic, but brilliant, lunch. The soup is always delicious and the sandwiches & paninis decent. They also do a really good cup of tea/coffee. Latest visit was on a particularly busy weekday lunchtime - church team were friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Everyone seemed to enjoy a good chat and a chuckle while queuing to use the one church toilet!

Nice experience and tasty food. Would be better if you could pick your own table. I had a panini and iced latte which came fairly fast seeing as it was busy.

Situated in St Peter's Church in the centre of Chester, the Cafe at the Cross is a good place to call into for a drink when you're walking round Chester. We dropped in late on a Thursday afternoon and, though they were about to close, we were welcomed as though we were the first customers of the day. Run as a non-profit venture and staffed by volunteers, the prices are cheap, especially considering the historic building in which you are sitting. Covid measures are observed.

To begin with, a previous reviewer mentioned that this was a "dark and dismal" place - well all I can say is nonsense. The church is a well lit for "A CHURCH", plenty light coming through the amazing stain glass windows. As for the notices about Jesus - it's "A CHURCH"! We were made most welcome and the cuppa was amazing! Plenty of seating and very spacious. Many thanks to the staff / volunteers.

This is an interesting building - a church built on the foundations of the Roman headquarters. This provides good ambiance, but the prices do not exploit! It was £1.20 for a good sized cup of tea.

Very limited menu - teas, coffees, soft drinks, sandwichs, home-cooked cakes... served within the body of a church by volunteers in this "Not-for-profit" cafe. Tea costs about a pound per cup, which is embarassingly cheap. And it's an excellent cause, with the church ideally situated

Well worth a visit coming to St Peters Church, they always do their utmost to welcome newcomers to Chester. The cakes are home-made from DIAL House, which provides services to those with special needs and disabilities. The cafe is very spacious and if you are lucky you can see some of the local people producing artwork, which I have bought several pieces!

Popped in with the family whilst on a day trip to Chester. The church is beautiful, especially the stained glass. Our party of four had a light lunch, which included very tasty homemade soup and great cakes, all at a very reasonable price. The two ladies serving were charming and helpful. A little slice of Chester history, with a cafe that offers something totally different from the standard high-street chains.

What a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre, and enjoy a peaceful cup of tea and a cake, for about half the price that you would pay in one of the plastic chain coffee shops, that Chester is full of.

On a recent visit to Chester my wife and I were ready for some refreshment after wandering around the city centre. We decided to go into the church where there was a cafe. A pot of tea and some home made cake was most welcome at very reasonable prices. We would definitely pay a return visit.

Right in the centre of Chester where Northgate St meets Eastgate St is the Church of St Peter. In the day it’s used as a cafe. £1.20 for a filter coffee, sandwiches and cakes and plenty of seats including a few leather sofas. God bless you.

St Peter’s Church is right in the centre of Chester at the Cross where the four main streets of Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge Street meet. From the outside it is a rather characterless brick box with a small square tower. If it wasn’t for its size it is easy to miss. It does however have a very good cafe and where else in Chester could you get a cup of coffee and slice of homemade cake for £2.20... The cafe is non profit making and run by volunteers. I had gone in mainly to look at the church, but was completely hooked by the choice of cakes as well as the price. Inside it is a big box divided into four equal size aisles by stone columns. Don’t miss the old wall painting depicting the Nativity and Crucifixion on the wall pillar just inside the door. There is a wooden gallery on two sides, which has the organ. The nave is filled with small tables with green and white checked tablecloths with the small servery at the side. Even at midday on a summer Saturday it wasn’t too busy and I easily found a table. It was mainly oldies, who know a good thing when they find it. I debated the choice of scone and jam, Victoria sponge, iced sponge with cherries or coffee cake. They also have a selection of gluten free cakes at 70p, or individual packets of biscuits for 40-60p. For those wanting something a bit more substantial, there was a selection of sandwiches for £2.50. They serve tea, coffee as well as a selection of cans, squash or milk. The coffee cake won. It was a generous size portion which you would be paying £3 upwards elsewhere. The sponge was light and moist and really did taste of coffee. It was iced with coffee icing with half a walnut. Ignore the trendy and expensive eateries in the centre of Chester and head for here for the cakes.

I was sitting outside listening to a violin playing busker. When I noticed a stream of people going into this church. So I followed them and there it was a cafe, serving the cheapest cuppa in town. It was dark and dismal inside but I didn't mind that. The staff were lovely. They have a sign on the wall which made me laugh, it read. 'All you need is a little coffee and a lot of Jesus'. They just can't help themselves can they. I don't know how much Jesus cost but a pot of tea is 1 pound 20 pence. LOL

Teas and coffees along with sandwiches , cakes and goodies are served by very obliging volunteers. There is a quiet room for contemplation after you have enjoyed your refreshments. Give it a visit when you are in Chester.

Coffee bar in church certainly drew in visitors. You could drink your coffee and view the church, in peace, at the same time. Important history and monuments illustrate its importance.

Attended Saturday night quiz. Arrived at 7:00pm. Started with a glass of red wine and Mediterranean platter followed by a to die for cheesecake( all food freshly cooked by Jason ( chef ) and the team. Wolfed the cheese cake down and realised I hadn't took a picture. Had a few more vino's during the quiz along with some banter with Jason and the regular customers. All tables were booked and nice to see a full house. Made a change to the average Saturday night and will certainly do it again. Would recommend to call in prior for some brekky or lunch to book quiz any day before or on Saturday. Quiz moved on quicker than your normal pub quiz which was great with the light banter and no typical interruptions from pub scene. Didn't win the quiz but enjoyed trying.

Stumbled on this wonderful cafe as we were on our way home from a camping trip. The staff are incredibly friendly and were so welcoming and kind to my 5yo daughter. The food was amazing, we both had the breakfast and my daughter had a lunch box which she loved and I thought it was great value, when we went inside to pay we couldn't not buy one (or two) of the amazing cakes. So delicious. Thank you :)

Our favourite place to come for brunch after football. The team, as always, went above and beyond with the orders for our family (all with different dietary requirements). The boys had the classic big breakfast with local products at a great price. I tried the weekend special eggs Benedict and it was amazing. The boys filled their boots. The girls enjoyed new things. The doorstop toast alone is worth the visit. Sadly, no room for my favourite one the menu - parsnip cake, but the cake-away option meant I could enjoy it later. We brought a friend for their first visit and she was blown away.
