When we went in we were not sure whether we had to wait or not, staff walked past us and didn't greet us or asked if we needed help. After we found a table, we got menus, and we ordered baked potatoes with tuna. We were not kept waiting that long, I would say about 5 minutes. When the food arrived it looked good, and a good portion size but when we started to eat we had a problem. The tuna tasted like it needed drained, and had pepper in l, the baked potato tasted like it was a frozen pre baked one, and the skin was tough like leather. Toilets are clean, however they are down stairs. But there are accessible toilets on the cafe level floor.

Overpriced, £4 for a cappucino is a rip off. Coffee was good but spoiled by far too much milk. And it took so long to prepare I didn’t have time to finish it, despite the cafe being quiet.

DEFINITELY AVOID. We ordered some vegetarian tarts (broccoli and potato) and they were chewy, dry and tasteless, and definitely nowhere near an appropriate portion size for an adult lunch (and £8.40, so jolly well should be!). The pastry in particular was awful, and weird not to have at least a few leaves on the side when eating in. When we raised this with the staff they said it was nothing to do with them (I guess they buy them in) and when asking for a manager we were told they work in a different building. No understanding of basic consumer rights or even basic customer service, and as other commenters have said it seems like they have had very little training at all. The staff that are there should not be left to run it alone, it's not their fault and the management should do something about this. So many bad reviews you'd think they'd take some notice.

Absolutely outrages customer care. We were in there today for a coffee at 12.35pm ish on 31/08/2024. 2 members of staff & we were the only customers. We made our order & paid for it. We were told to take a seat & our coffees would be taken to us. After listening to the 2 young members of staff talking about nights out & future holidays for 10 minutes I walked up & asked if they'd forgotten about us. To our shock & their shock they had forgotten. Inexcusable when we were the only 2 customers on the shop. Perhaps your staff are the reason the establishment is empty at lunchtime on a Saturday afternoon. Your staff today had no interest in work or customer service & I suggest you maybe keep an experienced supervisor on the premises at all times?

Busy town cafe. Food was nice, leek and potato soup with bread and butter and jacket potatoes with cheese and beans, (though we were told we’d have to wait 40 minutes, we weren’t in a rush so said ok) cups of tea. Overpriced like lots of places in Edinburgh now. But….staff look bored and uninterested in their jobs (the tips pot looked quite full though) they had no urgency to serve as everyone was doing everything, no structure or order? The tables were not cleared or clean. I went to the bathroom and it was messy and no toilet tissue in the dispenser. I told the staff, not a lot of response from them? Shame.

I went with pretty low expectations because of the reviews I saw, but it's really nice. I didn't find it excessively expensive compared to the same cafes in the area where I live. I have come here a few times and it was lovely, I usually just get an iced americano. However, I decided to try a new latte they had, the biscoff latte. When I received it, it was quite literally white with no coffee flavor. I went and asked whether this drink had coffee in it (because I had been to one other place before that sold flavoured lattes with no coffee--if they said no I would have accepted fault and that's it), but I was assured it did. I said that in that case I thought there was a mistake because it was literally white and tasted like a glass of milk. They said they would add an espresso shot, but then they wanted to charge me for it after they gave me the drink. I told them they did not inform me they were just charging me extra rather than remedying the mistake before they did it. They gave the impression they recognized the mistake and would fix it. I said I would not pay it nor drink it. So they decided to throw away a 4.50 drink in the trash, make a new one without the espresso shot and give it to me. They spent around 5 pounds on this issue because I did not want to pay .50 to remedy their mistake. This was definitely a wise managerial decision. The math adds up. Good job. I watched them remake it because I genuinely thought they had forgotten after 20 minutes, so I went back to the front. I watched how the full shot of espresso is not actually put into the drink because they over estimate the amount of milk into the glass and then there is not enough room to actually fully pour in the espresso and biscoff mixture. They add about 1/2 a shot of espresso into the latte--which I presume was more than what they had put in the first time. If you want to pay 4.50 for a glass of milk and half a shot, this is the place to be. That's why it tastes like a glass of double cream with barely any sweetness and no coffee flavor. Maybe the watchful eye made a difference because the second version at least had some coffee flavor the first two sips. So there is that.

Staff didn’t really seem to be present or very perceptive, on of the waiters hovered over my friends infant son with boiling hot water very shakily and kept putting things down right in front of the infant including the boiling hot metal teapot. One of the staff asked if I would like my cakes in the same bag when I was leaving I said not separately please and he just put them in the same bag anyway. Came here after a lovely visit to the surgeons hall and paid extortionate prices for a snack and a “coffee” that essentially tasted like bitter brown water - don’t bother no matter how tired you are after wondering around. Fairly unpleasant service didn’t help either.

Went in for a breakfast roll and a coffee. Asked for a fried egg roll to be told they had none left in a couldnt care attitude! Wont be back

The cafe by the gate of the Surgeons’ Hall is really dreadful. My husband had watery, bland mint and pea soup with a piece of pre-cut tasteless bread out of a Tupperware box. We both had a sausage roll that had the most cardboard-like ‘puff’ pastry you can imagine and really pappy and solid sausage meat that did not taste of pork at all. I asked for a glass of water and it came warm. Our waitress was surly and would not apply the discount we had been promised when we bought our Surgeons’ Hall tickets because we were “too late”.

I had a fast lunch here- good selection of soups and sandwiches and prices slightly more reasonable than other museum-affiliated places. Nice place to stop for a meal break in between scrutinizing pathological specimens in the Surgeons Museum! Beer and wine are available.

Visited today for a sandwich and drinks, mid visit to the surgeons museum, sandwiches made to order with choice of ingredients, tea and coffee both good. Quite busy while we were there and in a good spot for a break from visiting the museum.

They struggled to make a cheese abd pickle roll. It was served with no butter and almost no pickle, on a dry roll for the inflated price of £3.50.

Popped in for a coffee with my wife. The service and atmosphere was amazing. The two girls serving were a delight and their names are Julia and Stella. Plus the coffee was excellent.

Steht nirgends. Also am Tresen bestellt. Es dauerte 50 Minuten für "fast food". Alles etwas klebrig, keiner hat gefragt, ob man noch etwas trinken möchte. Fish u Chips waren naja, Burger war ok. Insgesamt so gar nicht unser Ding.
