Wow was this pub popular. Food and staff excellent. Arrived 5.45pm and place was heaving! Had visited hospital nearby and previously spotted this old london pub. Great decor. Unfortunately had not booked but walked in on the off chance having been told over phone fully booked. Nicholas the bar staff member was fantastic. He looked around and spoke with his manager who agreed to put us on a table for a time limited time as reserved for later. Suited us as concert later. Ordered fish pies but so popular sold out. Nicholas said fish and chips was amazing so we both opted for this. Boy was it good!! Light batter, hot, huge piece of fish, chips tasted freshly deep fried, wonderfully presented with veg etc. We will definitely go back. Service impeccable and we'll attentive 4 such a busy place! Well done team, especially Nicky!!

On a day trip to London with my wife and daughter, we happened across the Butcher's Hook and Cleaver whilst walking around Smithfields. On entering, we we're warmly greeted by the smiling Marcello and Smith who, when we were seated, assisted us with their recommendations from the Tapas menu. There was a mixture of corporate and social diners who were all enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and with a great selection of real ales, I knew we'd made the right decision to dine here. Many thanks to Marcello and Smith for their professionalism and for going that extra mile in making our afternoon in the BHC an enjoyable experience. Many thanks from John, Susan and Sophie.

Terrible pie and mash, pie was dry and really tough pasty with over peppered meat. Mash is mash and gravy’s is gravy but for £19 it really wasn’t good for what you pay. When I explained this to the staff, they offered me a free coffee when it is currently the height of summer. Staff were perfectly nice but I wouldn’t come here again for food. Edited 19.09.24 - mr.manager I spoke to the server on this, she offered me a free coffee to say sorry when it’s 25’c+ outside… The survey said she doesn’t eat there as she doesn’t like the food. I’ve accidentally deleted the photo of all 5 meters of staff standing around chatting when this lone server was taking care of the dining room.

This Fuller's pub is large and occupies two floors. It is bright with lots of natural light. It is situated opposite Smithfield market and is a short walk from Barts hospital. They had four cask beers, I opted for a London Pride at £6.45. I noticed a nice collection of around 20 whiskies. They do serve food and the service was good. The very clean toilets are in the basement although the stairs are wide and not too steep. In summary a nice pub that I enjoyed.

14/06/2024: Popped in for a bite to eat lunchtime as this Fuller's pub Butcher's Hook & Cleaver was convenient before we took a jaunt round Clerkenwell and Little Italy and had one last lingering look at Smithfields Market before it goes! We love this part of London and have many happy memories here. We returned for an early dinner and ordered a chicken breast burger and fries and a Caesar salad with chicken for an extra £4 and a side of chips. Let's say the chicken was wanting to say the least. The extra chips was only ordered because my husband had originally wanted another dish that came without so we thought we'd order a side between us. But they didn't have what he wanted and we forgot, and were not reminded, about the extra chips! Hey ho. Along with a bottle of white Pino Grigio the bill came to £70.45. Fine except they tried to charge a 12.5% service charge...for a pub! ...for a bogstandard meal in the bar area! ...where you had to get up and go to the other end of the bar to fetch glasses of water yourself!! Outrageous. We asked for it to be removed. According to the revised bill it shouldn't have been charged in any case for a party of 2. See photo.

Popped in with hubby for a spot of lunch whilst in the area for a medical appointment. The menu had a good range and staff were very attentive and polite. My hubby had a burger which he said was the tastiest burger he has had for a very long time and i had a Cesar salad with addition chicken which was delicious too . Spiked with anchovy and good parmesan cheese it was also the best salad I have had in a long time. Funny enough I have an another appointment tomorrow and in January next year so we will see if this was a one off or if the standard is maintained. A must visit if in the area. Basic food and the service not that great. I swear all the employees looked like UNI students which is not a discriminatory observation but they lacked pub/bar manner or service skills. The young man who was clearing tables of empties would come and swipe up glasses and bottles without asking if we were finished with drink. ‘Yes’ they had drink in them. My friend had to be a little firm in asking for her drink back. Added to this, even though our organiser hired the venue till 11pm, we were almost chucked out by 10pm as we were told they are closing at 10pm. Kitchen was closed just after 7pm which could have been easily explained that they were short on cooks and/or kitchen staff. (Jus’ sayin’) but given the fine folks who were at the event, we all made it an enjoyable evening nonetheless.

A grand, stately drinking hall. Grandiose mixed modernity of a heritage property in a vintage location. This massive pub in Smithfields is loud & proud. Big entry to the vast pub Palace, well modernised. Beautiful ceiling coving & roses drop modern chandeliers all over a clean, well kept, professional pub. A modern mezzanine is sympathetically edged in heritagesque railings & decorative paper. There's window perimeter high stools & sills to compliment a large number of dining tables & chairs. There's a buzz of professional groups' bordering on too loud but there's significant street overspill drinking to observe the glorious Smithfields. Loads of modern art pictures sit alongside heritage pillars, some vintage echoes of cut glass panels, door architraves & beautiful modern wood panelling in heritage style. An excellent selection of draught beer served from a large, long central U bar. Excellent service, offering my pint at half price because it was semi pulled within seconds before (observed); a great touch & happy to buy a second for that. An example of how to modernise a vintage property with nods & reflections of the history, not going too far.

🚇 Barbican 🍺 £7.35 Asahi ❤️ A Stunning Smithfield Public House. Located just a stones throw away from Smithfield Market is The Butchers Hook & Cleaver. The nearest Tube is Barbican which is a few minutes walk away. Formerly a branch of The Midland Bank and a wholesale meat supply shop, this @fullers pub opened its doors in 1999. This area is an historic part of London’s history, opposite the pub is where William Wallace who was hung, drawn, and quartered in 1305. The decor here is simply stunning, I would even go as far to say it’s grand. There is a spiral staircase leading up to a large dining area which provides a lovely view of St Bartholomew's hospital. On the ground floor, diners are catered for on the left hand-side and drinkers to the right. At the core of the main bar area is a beautiful granite topped servery. Everywhere you look there is elegance, the woodwork, etched glass, murals, chandeliers, this is a beautiful pub. The beer selection was good and included cask ales. I opted for an Asahi, my pint was excellent and a tad expensive. I was feeling a bit peckish on this Friday lunchtime and ordered a club sandwich, I really enjoyed my sarnie, it really hit the spot. There is a main food menu available full of pub-grub classics, Fish & Chips costs £18.95. The atmosphere here was convivial on this Friday lunchtime, there was a steady stream of local workers and visitors to the area streaming in. The service here was first class, the chap who served us was welcoming and pleasant, my food came out in no time at all. The calibre of pubs in and around Smithfield Market is outstanding, the @butchershookandcleaver is no exception, this is a top tier boozer. I would encourage anyone to have a crawl around here, you won’t be disappointed. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 07.07.23

A traditional looking and substantial street corner pub located just across the road from Smithfield Market, the signage outside describes it as a Fuller’s Ale & Pie House so presumably there is some emphasis on the food, although on my sunny Tuesday evening visit there were probably more people stood drinking on the pavement outside than there were inside. It’s quite elegant internally and is certainly a pleasant spot to sit and have a bite to eat. Despite being described as a pie house, there was only one pie option on the menu as far as I could see, with other choices including a burger, fish & chips, chicken Kiev, scampi and so on, with most of the main courses being somewhere around £15 - £20. My broccoli, squash and sun-blushed tomato linguine tossed with cashew nuts, chilli flakes, basil & lemon cream sauce was a decent enough dish, although did seem a little expensive at £14.95 given the portion size and the lack of any meat or fish. It would also have been useful to have a spoon for twirling the pasta, rather than a knife and fork. Overall though, pretty good, and I’d happily call in again if in the area.
