I bought my daughter here for her birthday. It was absolutely amazing, the food was the best I have had in years! I cannot recommend it enough, we had a variety of mains and each one was cooked to perfection! And really good value for money! The chef has undeniable skills and I cannot thank Sapphire enough for her amazing service from start to finish! The pub is cozy, while we were there the quiz night was happing and it was completely booked out, they were setting up the food for the customers playing the quiz, something we are going to come back and take part in!

Great if standard Sunday lunch. All well cooked, large portions and as we were a large group the very nice selection of veg came in dishes with gravy in jugs (as requested). The veggie option was good so it all represented great value for money. The service was lovely too. I hear that the tired environment is going to be updated soon

Great pub lunch. The food is as good as the website!! Really was one of the best Sunday roasts I've ever been served. It would be advisable to book ahead as it was very busy the day I attended and not everyone dropping in could be catered for. 5 Star*****

After a rocky few months "The Butchers Arms" Fringford re-opened on Friday under New Management. They are closed on Mondays and plan to have Youngs London Original (3.7%) and Youngs London Special (4.5%) on tap from Tuesday 27th February. At the moment food is not available but is planned for the near future. Similarly the Coffee Shop is expected to re-open. The web-site is not up to date but there are plans for that too. At the moment if you are travelling from further afield I recommend you contact the pub directly to check on their hours and services. As a Fringford villager I am delighted that the pub has re-opened as it is an important and popular meeting place etc. Having a pint in your own village with a roaring fire takes a lot of beating!

A table was booked online for 1pm on a Tuesday with no problem. On arrival, the whole place was shut. I see from other reviews that this is not an uncommon occurrence. Very, very disappointing and very unprofessional. We had to then hunt around for an alternative place to eat. If you are going to be closed on a Tuesday then please update your opening hours and DON’T accept bookings. Needless to say we won’t be visiting again.

We were staying at the campsite about 1 mile away so took a stroll here mid afternoon for a couple of pints having first checked that they would be open (supposedly from 4.00). Disappointed therefore to arrive and for there to be no sign of life at all. There was another couple also there who were hoping to get in but at least they hadn't walked. We had tried earlier to call the number on their web site but it was unobtainable which should have maybe set alarm bells ringing. The pub looks nice but with a bit of a run down air to it. Shame.

The Butchers Arms has been a popular village pub for many years with customers travelling miles to sample Pat and Terry's hospitality. It is currently temporarily closed whilst the new tenants complete a refurbishment inside and out. They plan to open by mid October and earlier if at all possible. On offer will be a selection of real ales and food for which the pub has become well known. Social activities are planned and more information will be available in due course through their social media outlets.Needed - socially distanced customers once it re-opens!

A countryside treasure, with helpful friendly staff, a good selection of drinks, and a menu spread over several blackboards covering the walls of the bar area. We had the Ham, Double Egg and Chips, and though simple, it was the finest lunch you could imagine. Even though there was a large party in the back room, service was not at all delayed. Portions were heroic - I was struggling, and my wife had to ask for a doggybag, as she could not get through the mountain of ham. Top quality nosh in unprepossessing surroundings - you can't ask for more.

After a long walk we arrived at our booking and Despite calling ahead letting the restaurant know we were going to be late, the kitchen was inexplicably closed early so we had nothing to eat. And the staff were brusque and cold with us. We were stranded in the pub with no food being served to us despite tables nearby being served. It was the most unfriendly and negative restaurant experience I have ever had.

My wife and I went here recently for dinner, on the strength of recommendations from friends. We had a pie and a lasagna respectively, which were both quite pleasant, and two fairly standard puddings. While I wouldn't say there was anything wrong with it, I would have to say that it was not outstanding. It was good, standard pub fare, with no apparent pretensions to gastropubbery. The landlady makes a point of chatting to customers, which creates a friendly atmosphere, and perhaps that's why people come back.

Selected this pub from the CAMRA good beer guide and they are correct, the beer was excellent. We booked for Sunday lunch and at £16.95 it seemed a little dear but the main course was extensive and it did include a dessert. The staff were friendly and helpful but my only criticism is that there was too much meat. Cut back on the meat and drop the price.

Yet again an excellent meal at this delightful pub. The flowers outside are gorgeous and made a lovely entrance. We were there with a party of 10 or so. They made us welcome and unlike some other places, had not asked for menu choices beforehand. Other places take note. I notice from my last review that I needed to get away from the pies, but with steak and ale suet pudding on offer, this was not going to happen. Not exactly slimming, but who cares with such deliciousness on offer. As always the staff were amazing. This place is an absolute gem, with (in my opinion) some of the best home made and cooked food around. The prices are good too.

As very regulars diners all over the `UK this restaurant pub was exceptional. It is remarkably good value for money but is like an "old fashioned family restaurant - cooking for the family by a family" The staff are "really nice", the ethos of service, the friendliness is quite remarkable these days. Food is freshly cooked, not reheated roast potatoes... and the portions large with an option for seconds. I don't remember a restaurant offering that except by paying extra. This is proper food at a very fair price with really nice people. Five stars in very way.

This was our third visit to this delightful pub and it did not fail to impress. Particularly the desire to be helpful. The waitress is wonderful and could not do enough for us. For instance, the fries arrived a little pale. Asked if Chef could give them an extra couple of minutes in the fryer. They came back golden brown and some how increased in quantity. Another member of my party had the prawns (sublime). She asked if there was any chilli oil. Chilli oil arrived and was pronounced excellent. It transpired that it was prepared from scratch specially. If I could give 6 stars for service I would.

Due to meet friends for lunch; heard v good things so keen to visit for Sunday lunch. Multiple attempts to phone unsuccessful so booked via website submission with a very curt response. Asked to eat in bar due to dog being present which was no worries for us but on sitting the table was poorly laid (ie no cutlery or napkins). The waitress made our vegetarian guest feel like it was a big deal asking for a veggie option saying we should have informed them - what pub doesn't offer a vegetarian choice as standard? They then informed us the veg meal would be ready later than the others; about 20 minutes after the other dishes arrived we we're informed the oven broke whilst cooking the veg bake and so there was only some very sad and greasy 'nut cutlets' available. We had to ask for napkins, sauces and cutlery. They had no options for our daughter who was dairy free so I asked for some bread; 2 dry slices of bought sliced bread came on a plate. They had run out of chicken and my pork roast had hard parsnips and no potatoes. The meat was very nice and my husband was pleased they were able to give him a little bit of each meat but it was very average. We had to ask for our plates to be cleared over an hour after we sat down and then ask for pudding. Pudding was clearly from a packet heated in the microwave but not terrible. The mango sorbet was nice. During the meal we were not offered another drink or asked at any point if everything was ok. It then became clear the female toilets were out of order and we were told "just go in the men's", resulting in my friend walking in on a man at the urinals.

We were so impressed that we stopped off for Sunday lunch on our way back a couple of days later. The Waitress came and took our food order but didn’t take drinks so my Husband and Father set off for the bar and whilst they were gone she popped back go tell us they were out of cod. The food was nice if a little overpriced (£13 per main - sausage and mash, scampi and eggs and ham, egg and chips) and when I got home I realised they had charged me £9.90 for jam roly poly (no prices on the dessert menu) - I think it should have been £9.90 for two)

I have heard about the roast dinners at The Butchers Arms from many of my friends over the years and so I was excited to go there and finally experience it for myself. There was a large group of us but we were all seated at different tables, albeit in the same area. The first thing I noticed was the table setting, ours had 10 people at it but only 4 wine glasses and napkins. The orders were taken on a table by table basis reasonably quickly although there was no room for manoeuvre in the event one of the party wanted something a little different from the norm. The food came out after a little while, however there was confusion on the part of the waiting staff over who had ordered what and one member of our table did not receive their meal until the rest of us had almost finished.Yes the portions are big but the roast potatoes were so hard I almost had a pretty woman moment, and the selection of veg was inconsistent. When it came to deserts, we were given a scrap of paper with a handwritten list of options. Having ordered, we were then told that one of the choices was no longer available. The desert were brought out very slowly and can only be described as 'school dinner' style. Certainly not freshly made and by the time were given cutlery to eat them with, the ones that were were hot had become cold.At £16.95 for main and desert, by the way you pay the same whether you have desert or not, this is not what I would call value. A big plate of food does not make it a good plate of food, the service further reduces the value of the visit and the microwaved deserts finishes off what is at best a disappointing visit and not one I will be looking to repeat anytime soon.

The food is great and they serve "proper" portions. Perhaps most importantly the food comes on plates. No "steak on a piece of slate" here or "your chips served in a tiny mock frying pan". It is such a pleasure to return to this pub for a Sunday Roast. In 10 years have never been disappointed in the quality of the food, the exceptional customer service and just an overall amazing atmosphere. I read a negative review which must have occurred around the same time as my visit. I cannot imagine how one person's experience can differ so dramatically from another's. What I can say is that I have been visiting this pub for 10 years (from Canada), along with numerous members of my family...I build my itinerary around ensuring that I visit this pub. I think that speaks for itself. Pat Terry and the staff have never deviated from their level of service and fabulous food. Booked a table on a Friday night and expected it to be very busy but we were the only ones there. I should have taken this as a sign of what was to come. We had arrived and were told by the surly barman that we had order our drinks at the bar and the food was detailed on a couple of blackboards. The choice was limited and nothing like the menu on their website. We ordered drinks and saw ourselves to our seats. We had Ham, Egg and Chips, Vegetarian Bolognaise, Meat Bolognaise and Chicken Bites and Chips. The ham was non existent, you would be okay if you liked fat. The chips on both meals were awful it was as if they were refried as if they were leftovers from earlier. The bolognaise was dire it didn't come with spaghetti as advertised but with overcooked tagliatelle which was so hot I think it was again previously cooked and then reheated in a microwave. The bolognaise was just warm. The chicken was hard and the attempt at a salad garnish included a tomato that was so old it probably had bus pass. The waitress was cheerful and said that the chef had known that the ham was fatty so had added more ham! Given that response it seemed pointless to complain anymore. If I had been the chef I would wonder why the meals were coming back hardly touched. I would avoid this place at all costs.

Had Sunday lunch here during our first visit. The roast beef was perfect and obviously carved from a joint. So tender and juicy with a mouth watering taste. The only downside is that there is, for me and my wife, far too much food on the plate. We will definitely visit again and again, but if it's for Sunday lunch we'll go for the smaller 'children's' portion, then we can have room for their 'spotted dick' with custard!

We made a detour off the A40 to have lunch here and were delighted we did. There was not a large beer selection, but there were real ales and the service was charming. The lunch was beautifully fresh and home cooked from scratch - and incredibly plentiful. We could not finish the plates!

Visited for a drink on a Friday evening, was busy with locals. We were served promptly. Decor is a bit old fashioned, but overall a nice place to go for a drink. Did have dessert which was good, but not main course so can't comment on that.

We have visited this pub a number of times and the service is spot on, always with a smile.Good selection of lagers and ales, which are always pulled well.As for the food, there is a great selection of different foods including sandwiches, baguettes and salads as well as full meals.Portion sizes are always very good, and of good quality - I will continue to visit with family and friends

Lovely warm welcome and feel to this popular local in 'quaint' village location. We turned up on 'steak night' and had two 10oz rib eyes for under £20. Couldn't fault it, great food, great price & great portion. Why wouldn't you recommend, well worth a visit.

We returned to this cosy village pub after quite a long absence. It was great to see the landlady Pat fit and well. The place is as welcoming as ever and the Sunday lunch just a good as ever. You need to be hungry though as the portion size is big. However it consists of freshly prepared tasty meat and vegetables and a lovely pudding. You need to book but definitely a top recommendation.

We had never visited the butchers arms before, and after leaving our mothers day booking till the last minute struggled to find somewhere available for 7 of us. The lovely landlady squeezed us in in the bar area. All the staff especially Landlady and Landlord were very welcoming and warm and interacted with their customers well. The landlady was especially accommodating It was normally Roasts only on a Sunday, I hadn't realised this and have two fussy children who don't like roast! No trouble at all and the landlady sparked up the fryers and prepared sausages and fishfingers, proper butchers giant sausages too much to my sons delight. the children's portions were big enough for myself let alone for them! Then came the fantastic roast Dinner! There was a choice of all the Traditional meats 5!! Of which you could have a selection of all of them or choice of a few or just one. The plate was piled high with meat, roast potatoes veg, stuffing and Yorkshire Pudding with lashings of gravy! All piping hot too juts how I like my food to be served. I challenge you to finish the portion it was huge! At least half the plate was piled high with meat. There was a fantastic choice of puddings too and nothing was too much trouble, even seconds of a bowl of custard for my son!All in all a fab Mothering Sunday lunch, friendly staff and owners. :)

Warm and welcoming. Lovely food with lots of choice and fabulous service. There were five of us and we all ordered a different dish. Everything arrived at the same time. Nice and hot. We were encouraged to ask for anything that we wanted and if it was possible they would accommodate it. Very friendly helpful staff. Will definitely be going back.

ie could have done better ! visited for the first time in years on Saturday evening with 5 friends for evening meal to celebrate a birthday.Positives first.........lovely old village pub, well looked after and nice and clean/tidy with good extensive bar.The female bar staff and waitresses were very friendly and deserve a special mention.Good fun, smiling, nothing too much trouble. We arrived at 8 and only 4 others eating in restaurant which is semi separated from main bar area.As i say, first impressions were very positive.Ordered starters and mains and sat.I must say,the 3 starters orders were good in quantity. But, the mains were a real let down and dissapointment.Although very generous portions,no flavour to the sauces served with the Beef and chicken dishes. It appeared to us that both dishes had the same creamy white sauce poured over them.No onion,no seasoning ,giving the impression it was "bought in "as a standard "throw over everything type sauce and nothing added. The chicken in the sauce was just a pale colour with no flavour and looked a bit like you get at a "Chinese".and then with the sweat and sour sauce thrown over it.2 Steaks ordered to be done med rare. One ok,the other med to well done. One lot of onion rings spot on, the other burnt as left too long in fryer.Only one meal without a complain /remark and that was the Gammon. So to recap, generous portions but lacking in flavour and finesse and especially for the cost.Have eaten better for less at other local pubs !! oh !! and the car park is so "shoe unfriendly" as if its wet, shoes get covered in white marks and i imagine if dry, white dust

We went with my son and daughter in law for lunch. A warm welcome and we were asked if we wanted to sit in the bar or restuarant. We had a table in the bar and had a drink while we decided what to eat. A varied menu and the beer/lager and wine ordered was received with approval. Very nice New Zealand SB. Meals were served on plates ( so much better than a slab of wood or slate tile !!) Good meals and for two people good puds. It was our first time at this pub ( unless you count over 40 years ago ) and we were not disappointed. We didn't feel as if we had wandered into someone elses living room and no one took any notice of the 'strangers; that had arrived. If you want a good meal in a good pub this could be for you. If we can go back again we will . Thank you for a great anniversay lunch.

Found the place extremely friendly and welcoming. Had no issues with the food at all in fact found the Friday Take-away fish and chips great value and excellent quality. A great idea for a village pub to keep things going. Dog friendly and comfortable.

Over the years, I, and members of my family, have made many trips to the UK from Canada. About 8 years ago, after asking a woman walking her dog where to have lunch, she suggested The Butcher's Arms. Since then, we have returned religiously for a meal that has never been less than perfection. We love it so much that we make a reservation a month in advance so that we are never disappointed. The lunch is absolutely amazing. The meats are gorgeous, sumptuous gravy, vegetables are always fresh and cooked to perfection and you always get Yorkshire pudding no matter what kind of meat you choose. Every time I visit, I wonder if it will be as good as I remember and it seems to be getting better - if that is possible. I actually book my trip around this lunch. I ensure that I arrive on a Saturday, secure a nearby a hotel and never eat breakfast. Travelling to the UK frequently, I eat in many restaurants and pubs and can truly say that this is a meal that never disappoints. The owners and all the staff are wonderful. In addition, I have many lovely memories of meals with my family as a bonus. Needless to say, I don't think that there is a finer Sunday Roast out there. Catherine K and Helen B (Canada)

My son and I visited this pub a couple of evenings ago and ordered fish and chips for me and Chicken Kiev for my son.Having eaten almost two thirds of one of two Kievs, my son was horrified to realise that the soft, moist, texture he thought had been the result of garlic butter softening the coating, was in fact due to the centre of the Kiev being totally raw chicken, (the other Kiev was cooked through)We bought this to the notice of the young lady serving at the bar and she apologised nicely and asked if we wanted her to get the chef. We said yes, as we thought we should highlight the raw food in case it may be served that way to anyone else. We were not rude or angry, just concerned. The young lady came back and rather embarrassedly told us “The chef says she is too busy to come out, she is sorry, but it’s difficult to tell if they are cooked”REALLY?For a start, it is her job to make sure the food she serves is cooked (fundamental for a chef, surely?) and as we were the only people in the entire pub apart from a couple sitting at the bar, I suspect the chef was not over busy but actually couldn’t be bothered to come and apologise in person. What an appalling attitude. My son was not charged for his meal and they took only for my, albeit very nice, fish and chips. However I don’t think we should have been charged at all under the circumstances. My hope is that perhaps with the money raised from the sale of my meal, the chef might invest in a food thermometer and perhaps research the serious side effects of contracting Campylobacter. Needless to say we won’t be going back.

There is no menu to look at, basically you have to go into the bar and look at the blackboard to decide what you want to eat. The staff don't seem to know what sort of food they are serving. To me its about the quality of the food not the quantity, in fact the food was horrible and I wont be going back!

Handy location for Oxford, staff friendly, however my room was dire, damp, mould, strong odour dirty bed linen and tepid hot water. The staff said they have just taken it over, but they should not have been letting the room they gave me, it was not fit for habitation. They couldn't offer me another room as they were fully booked, I hope the other guests had better rooms. I did strongly consider sleeping in my car instead, stuck it out though, got up very early and now recovering in Nero's with a strong coffee.
